New to Yelp. First time post: Cafe Athens in Front Range Village. When this restaurant first opened, we eagerly flocked there. Good Greek food (which we love and dearly miss) is in short supply in FoCo. At that first visit, we felt food wasn't quite up to our standards and we didn't return. Today, I was out and about, searching for dinner to feed my familia and my husband suggested giving them another try. So many years had passed, I decided he might be right. I arrived, looked at a menu, and placed my order. It arrived fairly quickly. I was secretly impressed. I paid and left, only to arrive home to discover that I was missing an item. I called and asked for a partial refund since my order was incomplete. Had Cafe Athens acted in good faith and fulfilled my request, it would've amounted to a $17 refund and simultaneously restored my faith in them and cemented future patronage. (I must admit that the food had improved.) Instead, I was transferred to Tara (a Cafe Athens employee) who told me that she wasn't authorized give me a partial refund, but that she would instead credit my card for the missing item ($10) and refund an additional amount of $20 so that I could "feel better about myself." When I expressed discontent (astonishingly without profanity or insults), her snide response was that she was sorry ifelt that way. This faux apology is code for 'sorry, not sorry.' Her comments were designed to humiliate me and put me in my place. Cafe Athens management, I hope you read this and retrain your staff to treat customers with care and respect. I will be stopping by Friday to discuss this further since Tara pretended another call was coming in and promptly hung up on me without getting my card number or name. In the meantime, patrons beware. UPDATE: Received a full refund. Appreciated. read more

This place does not look like your regular Greek restaurant, but the food and portion sizes are awesome. I ordered the gyro platter which left no roof or anything else. Service was outstanding and quick. Will go again tonight read more

Called to attempt to place a to-go order. Was taking a rather long time, so I headed to the restaurant, still on hold juuuuust in case they picked up the phone (so that I could try to avoid some of the wait, as I assumed they must be slammed to have me on hold so long), and walked into the (*EMPTY!*) restaurant, where all three on-duty employees were standing around the bar area, basically twiddling their thumbs, *with me still on hold, on the phone.* I asked, somewhat loudly into my phone, if there was some *reason* I was still on hold. Oh boy, did I get some deer-in-the-headlighes triple-stares with that one. The guy rapidly picked up the phone and put it to his ear, and I said "uh huh" and hung up, before placing the to-go order in person. I sat and waited in the (totally dead) room near the bar for over 10m for my "giant" order, consisting of two whole gyros and a fry (which incidentally, they actually managed to forget some of) before one of the staff came over with my bag of food, who then, as an afterthought as she went to chivy me out, "so generously" offered me the drink that APPARENTLY COMES WITH THE MEAL I'D ALREADY PAID FOR... wait, what? Like, you couldn't have at least asked what drink I wanted at the beginning and let me sip on it while I waited for my (ultimately incomplete) order? I was so irritated by the end of the whole thing that I even walked out without my change, as I'd paid cash and they were trying to hurry me out with my food. Ugh. Now I have to go back. Edit: got my change. Sorry, no $13 tip for you. No, I didn't bother telling them they'd forgotten to put some of the order in, because I didn't feel like letting my temper loose, and I was far too close to losing my cool at that point. But hey, dear Athen's staff? Next time, offer the drink immediately and more importantly, DON'T forget and leave someone on hold (in your *ENTIRELY EMPTY, UTTERLY DEAD* establishment for the entire space of time it takes to first wait, and then give up on waiting and drive from Harmony and Taft all the way to Harmony and Zeigler during lunch-rush traffic. That's a long freaking time to be on hold, guys. Won't be going back any time soon. Total swing and a miss, which is unfortunate, because I've been a customer of Care Athens for a very, very long time. Very disappointing, and it didn't even taste very good - was missing half the toppings on what we DID get!!! read more

I had a very unsavory experience here. I'm Asian from Cali. I have only ever experienced positive racism there. Looks like people in Fort Collins see me differently. I walked in and nearly EVERYONE stared at. Staff looked at me horrified. This one man never stopped glaring at me, even as I glared back. The message I got was "YOU don't belong here". The many videos of Asian hate I've seen ran through my head as I stood there angrily and terrified of my safety. Other patrons stared at me too, in a very unwelcoming way. I have read about the bigotry in Fort Collins. I am surprised it's this bad I really hate to write a bad review as this isn't a review about the restaurant itself, it's a review about my experience at the restaurant. The food was good, but the "hated foreigner" experience I got was not worth it. I'm not even a foreigner. I'm here because America bombed my parents country and had to apologize by offering them citizenship. When I walked out, I walked past the man that refused to stop glaring at me. No complaints on my most recent visit. Just not "wowed" enough to award another star. It's on the pricier side. I ordered the Falafel platter for lunch. Forgot to take a pic. It came with a pita cut into 4 pieces, a side salad, and a 2nd side. I chose the steamed veggies. Which were healthy, but not exciting. Probably not their fault there! :) The noise level was loud. We were seated at a table near the soda fountain & kitchen entrance. So in addition to the noise of a full restaurant's conversations, we were bombarded regularly with clanging/banging dishes from the kitchen. For me, this is a detraction from my own conversation and the chaotic ambiance detracts from my experience. Our service we fine. Nothing stood out. I do like Cafe Athens, but I've had better Greek elsewhere. The price & other local dining options keep me from coming often. read more

I have been coming to Cafe Athens for many years now. In fact, when it was Renzio's I would go to the mall location. Their meat is always tasty, moist, and succulent. I have met the owners a few times and found them to be pleasant and kind. I moved away for a few years but when I came back to visit, I always came to eat here at least one time prior to leaving. To me, they have the best fries in town. Load up their french fries with their Greek seasoning and you are in for a real treat! My kids make fun of me as I really load on the spice, but I love it! The gyros are excellent. The platters are my favorite. The platter comes with your choice of gyro meat (chicken, beef, lamb) or falafel. A salad comes on the side as well as tiziki and pita bread. You also get a side. My go to side are the fries. The hummus is also great. I have never had to wait long for my order and the food is always fresh and delicious. I am not sure where they source their feta and tomatoes, but they are so good here. They have ample seating for small or large groups. There is a nice bar area where one can enjoy a nice glass of wine or a local brew. read more

It wasn't bad but it turns out that it's just a regular Renzio's except with a slightly expanded menu; my gyro even came in a Renzio wrapper. I was hoping for a bit more variety than what their menu contained. My food wasn't bad, but it was far from a memorable experience. I got the spicy gyro and I didn't hate it. Overall, a thoroughly mediocre experience. I don't think I'd seek it out again, but I wouldn't necessarily avoid it, either. read more

Food is fairly decent. Can't go wrong with the Gyro. Where you can go wrong is the service. We got a waitress named Sarah L and from the beginning she was rude. Our small group of 3 was seated and she hurried through taking our order. Once it was brought, she forgot 3 items. Upon requesting them, she huffed and stomped off to get them. Seconds later, she openly talked about our group and laughed and complained with kitchen staff just steps from our table. She maintained her fake attitude throughout the meal before whisking our plates away and rushing us out the door. I ordered the chicken gyro with a side salad, a side of fries and baklava. Let me tell you, I have never tasted food so awful- let me begin with the gyro. If you've ever been to a true authentic Greek restaurant you'll know that a chicken gyro will be souvlaki chicken not boiled shredded chicken. In this case the chicken was so awfully prepped. Literally tasteless, no flavor and clearly has been boiled and shredded into chunks. Tomatoes were literally cut in large chunks. Side salad was decent, including the taziki sauce. Now, what Greek joint does NOT know of Greek fries!! The fries are basic regular fries honestly. Now the baklava, there was nothing sweet about it. It's just nothing like I've enjoyed before. Safe to say that I'm extremely disappointed, and I won't be coming back. Not to mention, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for authentic quality Greek food. read more

Always fresh and fast! We have never had a bad meal from Cafe Athen's. I recommend their Gyros Platter.

This is a FoCo go to! Anytime we're in town, we always stop to at least get food togo for the drive home (Arvada). Gyro's are always on point! Prices are reasonable, staff is friendly, food is delish! read more

My wife and I came here as a late lunch/ early dinner. Seated quickly. Our waiter answered a couple questions, and we ordered. Gyro platter and chicken platters arrived fast. Food was delicious! We finished up by splitting a Galo pie for dessert. As described by our waiter, it was stupid good. Philo dough, stuffed with custard, then deep fried, topped with cinnamon sugar and whipped cream. Extremely satisfying without being overly sweet. Just Awesome! read more

This is the second time I've ordered from Cafe Athens and I only have the highest praise and yummm for their food! I've ordered the Sampler Platter and it is the perfect blend of- everything! It has just the right amount of food. My son loves the gyro meat and all of the vegetarian foods are very tasty! The special seasoning just makes the taste even better! read more

Unfortunately I didn't get a good experience. My chicken kebab and rice were very dry and bland. Hard to swallow.

the service was incredible and so was the food. my water glass was always full. our waitress was super attentive. after we placed our order, we got our food not even five minutes later. we got a (huge) side of fries to share and they were some of the best fries i've ever had. perfectly fried and excellent taste. the gyros we got were absolutely delicious; easily the best gyros we've ever had. 5/5 would recommend. read more

My wife and I lament the closing of Akropolis (and Taverna before it), because this is what Fort Collins is left with. It's a "fusion" of Greek and American styles that personally leaves me missing real Greek food. Food is average (is Renzio's a supplier? Why is the name everywhere?) and service is below average. Fighting with 5 Guys patrons for a parking space is a real Athens vs. Sparta matchup too. read more

Some feedback for Cafe Athens since you do not have any way to contact you on your website. We wanted to order dinner on a Friday night to pick up at the Council Tree site and went to your website using a phone. Both "order online" buttons took me only to doordash. I did not want delivery. I wanted to pick up. Second, I tried to call your number to place an order. After the phone ringing about 6 times, I got voice mail which mentioned only your number - not your name. Very poor communication. THEN the mailbox was FULL. At this point I made the decision to cross you off the list of restaurants we are trying to support during COVID. If you go out of business, I will certainly understand why. read more

I remember the summer sun shining brightly, causing the freckles across my nose to darken. I remember the green leaves on the trees dancing in the breeze and the sound of us laughing about the super heroes we created, like Water Woman and Leaf Lady. I remember the smell of Greek food traveling throughout my neighborhood as a kid, taunting us like the elementary school boys on the playground. That smell often caused me to save my allowance money and walk to the hole-in-the-wall Greek restaurant for gyros and fries with one of my childhood best friends. Whenever I eat gyros (or Greek cuisine for that matter), I will always think back to those days when buying our own savory edibles made us feel so grown up. Sadly, there isn't much in the way of Greek cuisine in Fort Collins, but the opening of Cafe Athens helped increase our options. Our dinner there was great and after I realized that they do take-out, I was thrilled because now I have a great option when my husband wants to pick up Five Guys (I'm bored with them right now). Our service was fast and friendly, our food was fresh and fantastic. We also had fun watching the guys from the kitchen bring out a birthday treat for another table and with a large burst of flame, they all exclaimed "OPA!" Cafe Athens is a very casual place that goes beyond the Greek cuisine Fort Collins has been used to. At first when I read a review on Cafe Athens I was more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. The woman that wrote into the newspaper accused Athens for not having white table cloths and was hung up on other minor details that gave her a bad rating for the restaurant. I attributed this to snobbishness and elitist attitude that south Fort Collins seems to have and I still have that opinion of that woman's review of this place. When I went to Cafe Athens and left too I too had presentation issues that came about but more in a safety kind a way than decor. During the meal I ate my salad and cracked my tooth on a olive that still had a pit inside of it . Usually at these places they put these kinds of olives on the side and don't hide them in your salad. A minor detail aside from this is that I did not think my gyro was as spicy as other Greek restaurants that I have been to. If you really want good Greek food go to Denver and eat at Pete's Greektown Cafe or Chef Zorbas. Pete also has lots of other Greek restaurants around Denver which are awesome but god forbid some of these places are NOT places that have white table cloths on their tables! (GASP!!!) Truly not Greek at all. I tried the Cafe Athens in the Centerra Shopping center in Loveland, Colorado. We ordered the Spanikopita as an appetizer to start. We received the appetizer and it looked fried. You can't fry Spanikopita, it should be baked. We took a bite and it tasted like frying pan oil. We did touch another bite. I ordered the Greek salad, thinking nothing could go wrong with that and my friend ordered the MOUSAKA PLATTER. I took a bite of the salad and the feta cheese had no flavor at all. It didn't taste anything like feta. It might have been old or stale. My friend took one bite of his Mousaka platter and had the same reaction as the Spanikopita. He said it tasted like fried greasy food. Maybe they did clean the pans they cooked in that night. Too top off the evening, our service was horrible and we had to ask multiple times to have our water refilled....we had to remind the one waitress working that we asked for a refill 20 minutes ago. Our dessert was the baklava, which had a hard crust and was cold. Not flaky and warm. Needless to say, we did not touch our food after the first bite. Poor service and bad food. My friend and I will never go back. I'm not understanding why so many people have rated it well. read more

The Togo server tricked me into a value meal but then didn't give me a drink. Cafe Athens is from the same owner as Renzio's, but is a nicer sit-down version, and the menu is much more expanded. I had the Gyro meat platter which is what I always order from Renzio's. Everything was what I expected, with the addition of a side dish. You can choose from mixed veggies, fries, etc. The mixed veggies were overcooked. They charge a few dollars more at Cafe Athens, but you do get the extra side dish. Is it worth going to over Renzio's? Only if you're way on the southeast side of town. But I'll have to try some of their extended offerings in the future. I forgot to mention the fries-- they are the BEST. They have that outer crumbly fried bits of goodness, and make sure you sprinkle their special herbs/spices over them. So tasty! (Same fries as Renzio's, of course.) read more

We got in at 7:15 and they close at 8pm. The crew started mopping the floor with a strong bleach after we sat down. We could not finish the dinner as it overtook the experience and enjoying the food. The bleach smell is as incredibly strong and disturbing. Will not go back. read more

The wife and I stopped in to grab an order to go after a shopping excursion at target. When we got home the first thing that we noticed was that they forgot her french fries that come with the gyro sandwich. Seems like a pretty basic thing since it was part of a combo and all... Anyway, most of the stuff was branded Renzio's, and if you're familiar with the food there you pretty much know what you're getting - the "Greek" equivalent of fast food. The spanikopita was fried and disappointing, the spinach rice was dried out like it had been sitting for a while, and the portions on my lamb souvlaki plate were small. Next time we're in the mood for this sort of food, we will take the extra time to drive to Yum Yum's. read more

This place has the best gyros in the business. The only meat I don't like there is the chicken simply because it doesn't have a whole lot of flavor, especially in comparison to the souvlaki (lamb), beef (with some lamb mixed in), or the falafel. And who would have guessed that a Greek restaurant would have awesome fries?! Seriously, I like them better than any restaurant I've been to, including the fast food ones that are famous for them. I've always received great service, and their prices are beyond reasonable, especially for the amount of food you get. They pack their gyros full. Bottom line: Fantastic food, great portions, and great prices make this a place you have to try. read more

I love Cafe Athens. It's definitely boasts the best gyros in town. I love the feta, it has a strong and creamy texture that is hard to find with domestic cheese. Our waiter was very friendly and made us feel welcomed. He also made a brilliant suggestion: the glao pie swirl or Bougatsa. This is a flakey pastry filled with delicious custard. So rich and so original. Get the gyro or chicken gyro with feta and tzatiki, and get a side of falafel! So bomb. read more

Delicious hot food, super fast service, awesome prices. This is my new favorite restaurant at Council Tree. I've been here a handful of times and they've been consistently on point every visit. So far, I've had the chicken, falafel, and souvlaki gyros and they've all been incredibly good for the price. My favorite thing though is the fries - double fried, nice and crispy, and perfectly salted. So good! Also good for the family and they have beer and wine. read more

I've eaten at this place a few times, and while the food is good, i'd think twice about placing a to-go order. My order was to be ready between 12;15-12:25, so I could make it back to work for a conference call. I showed up at 12:40...not ready. No excuse was given. I finally got my food at 12:53....almost 30 minutes later than when it was supposed to ready! Needless to say i was very late for my meeting, and again, I never got an apology or excuse. It's ridiculous for a to-go order to be 30 minutes late unless there are extenuating circumstances, and if that is the case, an apology would be helpful. Won't be going back there again. read more
