One of my favorite places to eat in Fort Collins. We have eaten here about 10 times and it is always excellent. Our favorite is the sampler platter which comes with a separate soup-cup-sized container of hummus with fresh and fried pita on its own plate, 2 cheese puffs, 2 spanakopita, a few falafels, tahini, Greek salad, a separate plate of Gyro meat, and 2 Dolmadakia, and of course olives. 3 plates of food...and too tasty to pass up! read more

This is a great spot for lunch - my husband and I were in and out in around 40 minutes. The service was really promt and friendly as well. Even though I don't usually like sugar in my coffee, I really enjoyed the Greek coffee. The avgolemono soup was a little 'meh' to me. It was more like extra lemony chicken soup, and also had short grain rice instead of orzo. The gyros were pretty solid though. I don't really think I would come here for dinner, but I will definitely be coming back for lunch! The main problem I have is with seating solo diners I felt unwelcome or suffering an infectious disease. This was my first visit to this eatery specializing in Greek food. It certainly won't be my last! My girlfriend and I were looking for a quick bite to eat while we were out shopping. She had spent time abroad and was craving some of the local Greek food she had sampled. We split a classic lamb gyro. The meat was delicious, the tzaziki (I was never very good at spelling foreign things...) sauce was perfect and the veggies and pita were fresh. I could eat 4 million of these things and still be hungry for more We also tried the baklava. It was a little stale tasting and almost TOO sweet for my taste. LOVE Cafe Athens! Have visited here multiple times and although everything coming out of the kitchen looks good, I can never stop from ordering the classic gyro with tzatziki sauce and feta...yummm! Great lively atmosphere, bright, good service and the fries - oh the fries are wonderful! For a table of two you could easily each order a gyro and then split a side of fries because the portions are quite generous. Having been here as well as Taverna I'll take Cafe Athens any day, hands down. Definitely better prices and maybe a better value... First I want to say I really like Cafe Athens. I would say this is the best greek food in the area. Their food is really consistent and you can expect to be served fast. The platter entree portions are really large. The only BAD: I have encountered one server who was extremely argumentative when he got my order wrong, accusing me of ordering something completely different (something I had never even heard of). It made me really angry that I had to defend myself and argue with this kid who clearly wasn't paying attention when I ordered. I get it - mistakes happen, I wasn't upset about that. I was upset when he started accusing me of ordering something completely different and i was forced to argue back. Not my idea of a relaxing dinner...but the food was still great! I wish that I could give this a zero. I have cancer. During a time of my life after a bunch of hellish chemo, all that I could eat was their gyro platter-you know, pita bread, gyros, and tzatziki sauce-or else I would through up. When my mom went to go pick it up, she would ask for extra pita bread for me because I loved it so much. The platter was EXPENSIVE too, something that I didn't know at the time. So my mom goes to pick up my food because I couldn't really eat anything except what I was craving, otherwise I would throw up my stomach. My mom gets there, and she asks for extra pita bread per usual. The guy was like, "Sure, we can do that!" But as the poor guy was walking toward my mom, this snot-nosed guy named Jesse decided to tell him to THROW AWAY THE PITA BREAD rather than give it to us. My mom tried to explain that it was the only thing that I could eat. He didn't listen, and gave my mom a lecture. I mean, come on, pita bread isn't worth that much money, right?? We bought some at the grocery store for less than two dollars, and it was ten times the amount that they gave me. My mom offered to pay more for the already expensive meal, and he refused. We tried to call the manager, but Jesse picked up the phone, was rude to my poor mom AGAIN, and then when we finally DID get in touch with the manager, he was very unhelpful as his brother had diagnosed cancer and he was a wreck about it. I felt really bad for him, as I can understand his position, but we still wanted justice. We cooled down and then went back when some family members came to visit. Keep in mind-we're in this restaurant with four small children and three female adults. I have a smooth bald head. I was in a pretty snarky mood because I had just gotten back from the hospital and was feeling awful from the last round of chemo. We looked in the restaurant for Jesse to make sure that he wasn't there, and then went in to eat. I kid you not-right after we order our meal, he walked in. I was going to go chew him out, but I couldn't really walk and my family wouldn't let me. I know that he recognized us because of his smirky smile and his ugly gaze. What happened next was most likely him giving the waitresses a head's up about "bad customers". Our food comes out and except for the kid's meals, every single thing was cooked wrong and the meals looked horrible. My pizza was completely charred on the bottom, and the other meals had the wrong ingredients or was also burned. There were only three groups in the restaurant at the time. Given that one, I was mad, and two, if I ate burnt pizza I would throw up, I showed them my pizza and they offered to make me another one. I was happy, thinking that they were finally being polite, but then the next pizza came out, completely undercooked and so greasy that the dough could rip apart at the weight of a landing mosquito. The other two groups in the place had no problems at all. I mean, come on, we just wanted to eat. Except for my impulsive nature which was quashed by the fact that I could barely move without horrible pain and lack of brain cells, we didn't want to cause any problems. We just wanted to have a nice meal with some visiting family. Maybe they ruined the food on accident. I don't know. But we haven't been back. We have eight people in our family who were willing to pay, and they lost a good amount of money per meal that we give just to have a nice place to eat. I will not be back ever again. read more

"I loves me some Greek food!" My wife and I had our first experience at Café Athens last night, and both of us walked away fairly impressed. We shared a gyro platter with spinach rice, a souvlaki beef platter with wedge potatoes, and a piece of baklava. I loved it. Their ziziki sauce was tasty and they put in on the side of the platter so you can put as much or as little as you want on your food. That's one of my biggest complains about past Greek experiences...some Ziziki sauce is a little too "tangy" for my taste, and some restaurants seem to pour it on like it's going out of style...but that's not the case at Café Athens. It was GOOD Ziziki sauce and you get to control the amount. The meats were amazing, the potato wedges were fantastic, and the spinach rice was very good (Albeit, a very odd flavor combination if you've never had it before. Once I let my brain accept it, was yummy.) Portion size was good for the price. Café Athens seems to be a kind of in-between restaurant...you can come sit for a full blown meal, you can stop in for a quick sandwich, stop in for drinks and/or dessert, or just pick up something to go...and they seemed to cater to all four options pretty well. Sandwiches seemed to be around $6-7 while full dinners were around $10. They also have some great Greek desserts, appetizers, beers, and wines. The staff was friendly and very efficient, and the décor is charming, with Greek music playing and a lot of homage paid to Greek art and architecture inside the restaurant. Oh, and Café Athens' back door leads to a gorgeous patio with a large fire pit...nice. I don't have a lot of experience with Greek food, but I know what I like and I liked this. And it's nice to have a little more cuisine "diversity" on this side of Fort Collins. read more

On my second visit here, it was quite disappointing. I came back since the food was so good the first time, but it didn't live up to my expectations tonight. The gyro and chicken were very greasy, as were the pita chips. If there was any flavor present it was disguised by grease. The taboulleh salad had no flavor and the hummus was hardly memorable. After telling the waitress about my dairy allergy, my meal was served with tzasiki (sp?) sauce spilled on part of my dinner. Restaurants really need to take food allergies seriously!! A nice little Greek addition to the culinary options in Fort Collins! The hubby and I have long been hurting for a Fort Collins replacement for Jerusalem's down in Denver (a definite favorite of ours!). And as of recently, we have been kind of disappointed with the middle eastern and Greek food that Fort Collins had to offer. So were were definitely excited when we saw that a new Greek restaurant had opened up. We finally gave Cafe Athens a try tonight and we were not disappointed! It was still no Jerusalem's, but that is a high bar to beat. The place was nice, clean, and had a relaxing atmosphere. The portions were large and the food was pretty good. We started off with the stuffed grape leaves which were perfect! Then I got the gyro platter and the husband got the chicken gyro sandwich with french fries, then we split a side of falafels. My gyro was great and the falafels were nice and crispy on the outside. The greek salad on the side as also delish along with the tzatziki dipping sauce. The husband was a little saddened that his chicken gyro was made with chicken BREAST meat and not gyro meat, thought it clearly said on the menu that it is made with chicken breast and he failed to heed my warnings (in his defense, though, Jerusalem's does have chicken gyro meat). It was still good though, but I think next time he will go for the tradition gyro meat instead. Regardless, the food was great and at a wonderful price! Appetizer, two meals, a side of falafel, and a drink for just $25! And looking at the menu, most meals are under $10 (even the large entrees). There did seems to be some staffing confusions when were got there and our waitress (who I think was actually the hostess) seemed a little young and new at the whole serving thing. But nothing so bad that we would hold it against them. To round it up: Nice, clean atmosphere with great food and good portions. After navigating through the maze of suburban hell, the stripmalls, SUVs, and pavement meandering in indistinguishable paths for miles, you might, finally, if you have a GPS, find Cafe Athens. In this setting how can you think anything other than anonymous chain? But they have surprisingly good ratings so lets give it a try: I get there at 8:30, their website says they are open till 10, but the truth is 9. The waitress steers me to a to-go order, this place is closing down. With my food nicely packaged in Styrofoam I head out to find a park in which to eat my dinner (another story of suburban hell which can be saved for another time). The coke is the same corn sweetened liquid that you'll find at all the other chains along this stretch of steamy black tar. The fries come from the same assembly plant that Arby's uses for their curly fries, they left out the curl but otherwise you get the idea. And the gyro? Well, the meat was tasty, the thing is huge, overall, it had the same effect as one you might get from the fair: tasty and full of grease. The overall verdict: if you are craving a fat filled fast food fix and can run the suburban gauntlet, you might find Cafe Athens fits the ticket, but for me the price is just too steep and the payoff not quite there. read more

Horrible unless you like canned mushrooms, olives, bottled sauce etc. The waitress dropped an entire sampler plate in my friend's lap and NEVER apologized! This was at the Centerra Loveland location. No manager on site, when I asked who was in charge I was told the owner might be in tomorrow. The worst lunch in years and lack of service makes this a disaster. I really have no idea how this place is getting the reviews it is. The gyros themselves were good, but that is where stops. Saganaki was terrible both in taste and presentation. I have never heard of it taking 20 minutes, in fact I've never seen it take more than 5 minutes. P.S. it only takes 1 person to light cheese on fire, not 4. The avgolemono was a far cry from being respectable. I can see some of the veggies being tossed in there, but if your going to butcher the soup by putting them in there at least have the decency to cut them up to make them less noticable. The mixed vegetables as a side dish seemed like a complete after thought; oh no, somebody wants vegetables? Quick run to the store and pick up a bag of frozen Birds Eye veggies and no one will know.
