When I go to a Greek restaurant, I am not going for a gyro. I can get that at the cart on College when I am drunk. I go for actual Greek meals. We had the Combo platter (gyro and chicken), the Mousaka platter, and a appetizer sampler. There were 2 of us and a toddler, and we ended up taking home about half of the food, because there was so much. The appetizer sampler is enough for a meal for two people. And it is only $10. I can barely get enough hot wings for one person for that price! It really is a good deal and everything was good, the pita was soft and fresh, it really tasted great. The dolmathes filling was a little bland. The platters were the same story, ton of food, nice salad with tomato, onion, feta, olives. We tried the spinach rice and the orzo. The orzo was a little bleh, kind of overcooked I think, but the rice was wonderful with the right lemon flavor. The chicken on the combo platter was pretty dry, but the mousaka! This is like lasagna with eggplant instead of noodles and this awesome crazy layer of egg (quiche-like) on top. Top with a marinara sauce. Yum. Really shows the cultural exchange between the Mediterranean countries even in the last two centuries. Alas, I wax poetic for that dish... Service was great, fresh glasses of iced tea appearing when I didn't even notice the server taking away my empty glass, everything was fast, and the price was right. My server was very friendly and accommodating. However, paying for a "$10 salad"- there was hardly any lettuce! It was brought on a smaller size plate, not entree dice like the entree price. One of my favorite places to eat in Fort Collins. We have eaten here about 10 times and it is always excellent. Our favorite is the sampler platter which comes with a separate soup-cup-sized container of hummus with fresh and fried pita on its own plate, 2 cheese puffs, 2 spanakopita, a few falafels, tahini, Greek salad, a separate plate of Gyro meat, and 2 Dolmadakia, and of course olives. 3 plates of food...and too tasty to pass up! read more

This is a great spot for lunch - my husband and I were in and out in around 40 minutes. The service was really promt and friendly as well. Even though I don't usually like sugar in my coffee, I really enjoyed the Greek coffee. The avgolemono soup was a little 'meh' to me. It was more like extra lemony chicken soup, and also had short grain rice instead of orzo. The gyros were pretty solid though. I don't really think I would come here for dinner, but I will definitely be coming back for lunch! Cafe Athens offers a great option for Greek food that is missing in Fort Collins (unless you want to visit the Gyro guy at 2am in Old Town, or the place in the Mall). This was my first visit to this eatery specializing in Greek food. It certainly won't be my last! My girlfriend and I were looking for a quick bite to eat while we were out shopping. She had spent time abroad and was craving some of the local Greek food she had sampled. We split a classic lamb gyro. The meat was delicious, the tzaziki (I was never very good at spelling foreign things...) sauce was perfect and the veggies and pita were fresh. LOVE Cafe Athens! Have visited here multiple times and although everything coming out of the kitchen looks good, I can never stop from ordering the classic gyro with tzatziki sauce and feta...yummm! Great lively atmosphere, bright, good service and the fries - oh the fries are wonderful! For a table of two you could easily each order a gyro and then split a side of fries because the portions are quite generous. Having been here as well as Taverna I'll take Cafe Athens any day, hands down. Definitely better prices and maybe a better value... The food was nice tho the chicken a little dry and my server was fairly attentive. Greek salad was nice tho I have never had Greek salad served without lemon and oil. The main problem I have is with seating solo diners I felt unwelcome or suffering an infectious disease. In mostly empty restaurant I was taken all the way to the back and seated outside the restrooms I asked to be moved and was moved one booth. Plenty of seats in the front and COUPLE that came in 10 mins after me were seated at front. I dine in a restaurant alone as I want the service and ambience. Next time I won't. First I want to say I really like Cafe Athens. I would say this is the best greek food in the area. Their food is really consistent and you can expect to be served fast. The platter entree portions are really large. The only BAD: I have encountered one server who was extremely argumentative when he got my order wrong, accusing me of ordering something completely different (something I had never even heard of). It made me really angry that I had to defend myself and argue with this kid who clearly wasn't paying attention when I ordered. I get it - mistakes happen, I wasn't upset about that. I was upset when he started accusing me of ordering something completely different and i was forced to argue back. Not my idea of a relaxing dinner...but the food was still great! "I loves me some Greek food!" My wife and I had our first experience at Café Athens last night, and both of us walked away fairly impressed. We shared a gyro platter with spinach rice, a souvlaki beef platter with wedge potatoes, and a piece of baklava. I loved it. Their ziziki sauce was tasty and they put in on the side of the platter so you can put as much or as little as you want on your food. That's one of my biggest complains about past Greek experiences...some Ziziki sauce is a little too "tangy" for my taste, and some restaurants seem to pour it on like it's going out of style...but that's not the case at Café Athens. It was GOOD Ziziki sauce and you get to control the amount. The meats were amazing, the potato wedges were fantastic, and the spinach rice was very good (Albeit, a very odd flavor combination if you've never had it before. Once I let my brain accept it, was yummy.) Portion size was good for the price. Café Athens seems to be a kind of in-between restaurant...you can come sit for a full blown meal, you can stop in for a quick sandwich, stop in for drinks and/or dessert, or just pick up something to go...and they seemed to cater to all four options pretty well. Sandwiches seemed to be around $6-7 while full dinners were around $10. They also have some great Greek desserts, appetizers, beers, and wines. The staff was friendly and very efficient, and the décor is charming, with Greek music playing and a lot of homage paid to Greek art and architecture inside the restaurant. Oh, and Café Athens' back door leads to a gorgeous patio with a large fire pit...nice. I don't have a lot of experience with Greek food, but I know what I like and I liked this. And it's nice to have a little more cuisine "diversity" on this side of Fort Collins. read more

On my second visit here, it was quite disappointing. I came back since the food was so good the first time, but it didn't live up to my expectations tonight. The gyro and chicken were very greasy, as were the pita chips. If there was any flavor present it was disguised by grease. The taboulleh salad had no flavor and the hummus was hardly memorable. After telling the waitress about my dairy allergy, my meal was served with tzasiki (sp?) sauce spilled on part of my dinner. Restaurants really need to take food allergies seriously!! A nice little Greek addition to the culinary options in Fort Collins! The hubby and I have long been hurting for a Fort Collins replacement for Jerusalem's down in Denver (a definite favorite of ours!). And as of recently, we have been kind of disappointed with the middle eastern and Greek food that Fort Collins had to offer. So were were definitely excited when we saw that a new Greek restaurant had opened up. We finally gave Cafe Athens a try tonight and we were not disappointed! It was still no Jerusalem's, but that is a high bar to beat. The place was nice, clean, and had a relaxing atmosphere. The portions were large and the food was pretty good. We started off with the stuffed grape leaves which were perfect! Then I got the gyro platter and the husband got the chicken gyro sandwich with french fries, then we split a side of falafels. My gyro was great and the falafels were nice and crispy on the outside. The greek salad on the side as also delish along with the tzatziki dipping sauce. The husband was a little saddened that his chicken gyro was made with chicken BREAST meat and not gyro meat, thought it clearly said on the menu that it is made with chicken breast and he failed to heed my warnings (in his defense, though, Jerusalem's does have chicken gyro meat). It was still good though, but I think next time he will go for the tradition gyro meat instead. Regardless, the food was great and at a wonderful price! Appetizer, two meals, a side of falafel, and a drink for just $25! And looking at the menu, most meals are under $10 (even the large entrees). There did seems to be some staffing confusions when were got there and our waitress (who I think was actually the hostess) seemed a little young and new at the whole serving thing. But nothing so bad that we would hold it against them. To round it up: Nice, clean atmosphere with great food and good portions. After navigating through the maze of suburban hell, the stripmalls, SUVs, and pavement meandering in indistinguishable paths for miles, you might, finally, if you have a GPS, find Cafe Athens. In this setting how can you think anything other than anonymous chain? But they have surprisingly good ratings so lets give it a try: I get there at 8:30, their website says they are open till 10, but the truth is 9. The waitress steers me to a to-go order, this place is closing down. With my food nicely packaged in Styrofoam I head out to find a park in which to eat my dinner (another story of suburban hell which can be saved for another time). The coke is the same corn sweetened liquid that you'll find at all the other chains along this stretch of steamy black tar. The fries come from the same assembly plant that Arby's uses for their curly fries, they left out the curl but otherwise you get the idea. And the gyro? Well, the meat was tasty, the thing is huge, overall, it had the same effect as one you might get from the fair: tasty and full of grease. The overall verdict: if you are craving a fat filled fast food fix and can run the suburban gauntlet, you might find Cafe Athens fits the ticket, but for me the price is just too steep and the payoff not quite there. read more
