Someone recommended trying this place. I was in the area and got in line for walk ins. With the cold weather, I was 2nd in line 15 min before they opened. They opened 5-10 min late. They had everyone snake in so people were not standing in the cold. Every item was explained, but they were making more items in the back (pizzas, certain croissants, sandwiches). I got a few items and they were delicious. I had to wait an extra 15-20min for the Gochujang croissant and so happy that I waited. It was so good. Also, based on what others said, I knew there would be a lot of waiting so didn't mind. The staff is busy and moving fast. Inside is simple and clean. Items with tax came out to $10 each. I am picky with baked goods and will be happy to go back. Different flavor profiles and you can taste the quality. Will try for preorder at some point.
Let me start by saying I still adore this place, am so glad to have it in Garfield Park, and wish them continued success. No matter what you get here, it's going to be delicious. That said, there's ample opportunity for improvement on the customer experience side of things. Be prepared to wait! The days of a quick pop in for a pastry are few and far between. The store may open a few minutes late and preorders may or may not be on time. It doesn't bother me to wait a few minutes, but when I went to pick up my Thanksgiving preorder half an hour after my scheduled pickup time and there was a line out the door for *preorders*, I wasn't thrilled. Unfortunately this was repeated for the Christmas preorder as well. On a regular walk in day, no pastries are labeled, so the offerings have to be re-explained as new people join the line and/or get to the front. Just listing regular offerings (Matilda chocolate cake, chocolate chip toffee cookies, cruffins, cretzel, etc) with images on the website/instagram highlights for people to reference and know what they're looking at would be helpful. Cafe Babette has made it clear that this is just part of their vibe, and they're not planning on changing anytime soon. I wish them the best of luck and hope to be a frequent visitor again in the future.
This was my first time here. On Sundays at 7pm they open up their online ordering for the upcoming Saturday. The online ordering usually sells out within 10 minutes. I was finally able to online order. Yay! Today, Saturday, I picked up my order at the time I selected. When I saw the line outside I asked how it works. The line outside was waiting to purchase any pastries they have on hand. If you pre-ordered you go inside to find your box and then leave. The line to order was long so I'm glad I pre-ordered. Once inside it was packed. I wanted to get a picture of what was available to purchase but I couldn't get close enough. The inside was decorated nicely and it seemed the staff was working diligently to get everyone in and out in a timely manner. They also have apparel you can purchase. I opened my box when I got home and let out a WOW. I only ordered two pastries and each pastry could easily feed 2-3 people. . I ordered a coffee cream croissant and a cardamom + cinnamon croissant twist. I have tasted both and they're delicious. Now I understand why pre-order sells out so quickly and why there's a line waiting to get in. You gotta check this place out! They are located near Garfield Park.
CAFE BABETTE IN INDY HAS DELICIOUS PASTRIES ======================================== I am so glad my son and daughter-in-law placed an order for pick-up because this café is popular and there was a line. We just pulled up, my son ran in and picked up a big box of pastries and then we headed back to their home. I think I tried everything in the box and everything was amazing. I would definitely go there again.
If you have never been here then set an alarm and plan to go when they are open. It is an amazing local business that started in a house, then as a pop up and now as a regular occurring bakery of delicious tasty pastries! Every time I go the service is amazing, the flavors fabulous and the options beyond what my taste buds can handle almost. My favorite so far is the pretzel bread (if I have to pick). Soft and pillowy but yet also crispy with just the right amount of butter and flavor. Yum! This spot is a amazing and so perfect for the community, a bakery as if from heaven in our backyard!
I recently visited for the first time, on a Saturday, and all I can say is WOW! They're truly doing something special here. Service and product are equally amazing. I found street parking close by, and though the line and wait were long, it was worth it and I appreciate the efficiency while still taking time with each customer. It was so good, my husband went back the same week.
If you go on the weekend just know you WILL be waiting in a long line. Worth it? Yes. Could it move faster? Also yes. Here is the thing, people picking up orders can add to their order right there at the only cashier and that is what slows everything down. Great idea but Saturday needs a little work. So you are standing in this snake line, people are squeezing past you to grab their orders off the bench, someone is standing right next to you waiting for theirs and honestly at some point you just start making friends because what else are you going to do. There are not many people behind the counter so patience is key. Now the menu? Overwhelming in the best way. Do not be greedy like me because I ordered a whole bunch of things, took one bite of each and barely finished half a dessert. I have no regrets but my eyes were way too big for my stomach. It is a small spot but it is such a cool little place and yes standing in that line is absolutely worth it.
No words! It's insane to think of the flavor combinations and how well they work. The crab Rangoon puff pastry and the French onion soup with goat cheese danish, TO DIE FOR! The mango curd cheesecake danish was my favorite sweet, the mango curd is incredible. Love how creative this place is, it's definitely worth the wait and the fight to pre order. Would recommend 100%. Be prepared to make a line and keep an open mind, they run out of things quickly.
They are only open for a few hours and the line is huge. I was sure it wasnt going to be worth it...but it was. They just make incredible bakery items here. I got the breakfast sandwich on homemade bread and everything on the inside just emulsified into one solid-melt-in-your-mouth bite. Insane flavor on that. I also got some monkey bread which they dolloped with a ladel of caramel which was as thick as toothpaste. I ate that on the drive home and had sticky caramel all over my hands. The line should go much faster but it seems like every customer wants to play their little game of 20 questions with the staff. Come on, folks ! Just point at what you want and pay. You dont need the complete ingredient list and process that goes into every item. Sheesh ! Great place. I wish they were open longer.
Despite all the controversy they manage to sell out and attract a line of customers around the block every single day. I had to try it and I think their creativity is unmatched. Pastries are quite expensive but huge and unique so you're paying for that value. It's not an every day thing for me but I wanted to support them before they move to Spain and I enjoyed what I got! Coconut cake and cookies were my favorite.
Before Cafe Babette was located off Shelby Street, they made the pastries out of their house in Franklin. You could pick a time and pick them up there. My favorite pastry was a creme brûlée cronut. Fast forward a couple of years and they have a shop within walking distance of Garfield Park. They have pre orders and walk ins lines outside. I wish they had menus of what they had made for the day for people waiting in line to look at to maybe know what they would want before they get inside. We looked on the menu this morning and couldn't find any of the pastries. Maybe some little signs in front of the pastries once you get inside also. Maybe even a tv with a menu on it. They have such pretty pastries that are works of art. I've had the strawberry cream and coffee cream croissants and both were so light and delicious. The croissants are flaky. They have savory and sweet items to choose from. Ham and cheese croissants, Matilda cake, and great soft pretzels with a garlicky ranch dip. That did would be great with veggies and so much more. It's so good!! The browned butter sheet cake slice I got I think is my favorite. Very simple but has great flavor. The owners are very nice and they have a good following as they have a line out the door before it opens. It's hard to choose what to get because they have a lot and it all looks delicious.
As visitors from out of town, we didn't feel comfortable pre-ordering for pickup because we wanted to see the items to help influence our order. We don't regret that decision and rationale, but I'm not going to pretend that I enjoyed waiting in line for an hour on a Saturday morning. But that wait really speaks to the popularity of this weekly "pop-up" bakery, its endless options of sweet and savory baked creations, and of course how scrumptious everything tastes. The highest marks for me went to the savory items. Oversized croissants + heaping amounts of cheese + breakfast meats = heaven. Hard stop. We got two different varieties of croissants + a sausage roll and they were worth every minute of the wait. We got a few sweet treats, and I can't even remember what they were. They were good, but the savories were the winner of the day.
I've had Cafe Babette saved for a while, but saw a picture of the banoffee croissant and that was all the inspiration I needed to put in my pre-order for the upcoming Saturday. When I pulled up there was probably already 30 people in line before they opened. But, they came out and separated the lines into pre-orders and the regular line. For pre-orders, we just went inside right away to pick up the boxes. Since the line moved more quickly than I expected, I was actually there about 15 minutes before my pre-order time. I just told them my name and they put it together in the back real quick. You can tell they are used to having a line since they had it under control and everything moved efficiently. I am so glad I pre-ordered. I peeked at the pastries out for sale and they all looked so pretty. I already always have a hard time deciding what to order, I'd still be there trying to pick. The pastries are almost comically large. I actually laughed out loud when I opened the box. I ordered 5 of them so I could try a little bit of everything, but it was more pastry than I could handle. I went for the banoffee croissant and that was good, but my favorites were actually the carrot cake cupcake and the earl grey monkey bread. I read on Instagram that the carrot cake is soaked in a pineapple syrup and I think that's the secret. Unpopular opinion - I don't like pineapple in my carrot cake but it's almost always in there. This had the flavor of pineapple without the huge chunks and it was so good. Plus, I could just eat the brown butter frosting by itself.
These are the best pastries/desserts I've ever had in Indy. It can be a bit chaotic since they are still starting up but seriously these are incredible. I almost don't want other people knowing about this place because it's so good. Prices are a little bit high but the size and quality you're getting make it an occasional treat to look forward to. I hope to see them grow and soar and offer more items during the week! read more

So excited that this microbakery now has its own storefront. We have been doing the pre-orders and plan to continue doing so to avoid the long lines, although the pastries are worth the wait! Our pick ups this week... The Twice Baked Carrot Cake Croissant was my personal favorite. Their laminated pastries are incredible! This had a coconutty carrot cake filling and was topped with a tiny carrot. Absolutely beautiful! The Sourdough Focaccia Breakfast Slice had a lovely thick focaccia base. It was topped with a potato confit, eggs, mushroom and a sprinkle of veggie cheese. It was a hearty and a meal in itself. The Orange Thyme Olive Oil Cake Slice was melt in your mouth moist and flavorful. The Cardamom Sugared Morning Bun with Orange Mascarpone Custard was a flaky laminated pastry. It was described as filled with an orange mascarpone custard but it only had a dollop of custard on top and was not filled inside. A bit disappointing but still good. The Herby Cheddar Sourdough Scone was the perfect scone texture. All the pastries are very generous in size and perfect for sharing if you want to try a bit of everything. read more

Had a great time trying cafe Babette. Although it's extremely popular, I got through the line very quickly. The owners were so great and took the time to explain each pastry. The pastry with the Thai tea cream on top was soooo good!! read more
Having always found *the* bakery every time I've moved somewhere new, this was a daunting task for me, having moved to the area in the dead of winter. Where was I to find the best baked goods where I could treat others and bring out of towners to? Cafe Babette answered that question for me. As my previous favorite bakery had a wood fire oven, I was not convinced anywhere could recreate the flakiness I loved. But I was delighted to find that not only where all of Cafe Babette's goods delightfully flaky, it was crispy as well! (And if you bought too much, they crisp just as nicely the next day in the toaster over). I love that there is such experimentation with flavors and I especially enjoy the midwestern generosity in serving sizes. If you're ever lucky enough for a sandwich special, whatever it is, GET IT. I sadly stood in line just the other week and watched the last sandwich special waltz out the door. Fridays are their doughnut specials, so if you like your co-workers that much, it's a special treat for them. Soooo me and my coworker went to cafe Babette for lunch and the sandwiches did not disappoint my coworker had the pastrami sandwich and I had the vegan sandwich which was chefs kiss as I took my first bite all of the fresh ingredients and sauce compliment my tast buds so I had to buy two sandwiches and my coworker as she bit into her pastrami sandwich she could not resist on how the meat and all of the rest of the ingredients complimented her taste buds as well she also bought her two sandwiches as well I can't get enough of the sweet and savory pastry shop it keeps me coming every week so again I would say you will not miss with this shop at all just to come and see all of the different goodies you will not leave empty handed read more

I don't like to drive 30 minutes for anything, so I was pretty skeptical about driving such a long way for a pastry. I admit that I was wrong because WOW. That's pretty much the sum of my experience with Café Babette. I preordered and, for the first time ever, regretted not standing in line for the pastries. I picked up my preorder seamlessly while peeking over to the offerings they had on Saturday. Pro tip: Just go, and see what surprises await you! There are certain pastries not available for preorder that are available if you wait! Anyway, I got a cretzel, some quiche, a basque cheesecake danish and a cookie and every single thing was delicious! I would reorder the cretzel (the dip that came with it was so good!) and the basque cheesecake danish. The danish especially was my favorite! I'm not sure I have words, but I'm going to try. I started following them on insta and saw they do preorders. I decided this was the weekend. I had friends coming into town and felt it was the best way to try a lot of pastries. And by a lot, I mean 13. So I added all to my cart on Sunday night and laid and then we headed down on Saturday to pick them up. There was a line when we got there at 10:30 and he came out to to say they needed 10 more minutes. We headed to a coffee shop down the way because we didn't need to wait in line. Came back around 10:50 and I walked in and saw the preorders by the side and found my order and took it. No one stopped me, which was a little nerve wracking but glad people are honest! So glad I pre ordered because I saw people waited in line over an hour. Off we went with the two giant boxes and got home to unpack them. Wow. Just wow. Who knew a place like this even existed in Jndy? I felt so lucky!! We started cutting into them so we could all taste what we wanted to. Insanely delicious! My favorite is definitely the raspberry pistachio with raspberry ganache croissant. But, the early grey bun was so close. You can't go wrong with any of them truthfully. The butter. The lamination. The heart and soul. I would recommend everyone go, calories be damned because they are worth every single one. So much love to Cafe Babette. read more

Believe the hype! I've tried bakeries near and far, and Cafe Babette stands alone at the top of my list. The "cafe" isn't a place you go to sit and eat. You can either place your order for pick-up (highly recommend) or stand in (a very long) line to select whatever they have left over. They are expensive & inconvenient, but worth every cent and every moment you spend to get their amazing pastries, pizza, cakes, etc. read more

Second time coming and OMG. Cafe Babette does not disappoint at all!! I was shocked when I opened the cute pink box this time around. The pastries were huge, like actually massive. I got the raspberry chocolate croissant with peanut butter chocolate cremeux (same as last time) and I will say, don't try eating it in the car. This pastry actually has so much filling it's incredible but a little messy to eat so definitely wait until you get home. The other pastries I got this time were also ones I got last time (the chocolate morning bun and the twice baked raspberry pistachio croissant) and once again, they were incredible. I was able to go in and grab my box and leave which was different from last time I preordered as that took a little while, but I didn't mind waiting as I got to see all the pastries being set out. It seems like they've found their groove and I will say, these are worth the price. Go check them out! read more

One of the most unique and incredible bakeries in Indy. This is a must go for any sweet treat lover, but their savory options are just as delectable. They are known especially for their As Big As Your Head laminated pastries. From the outside it is unsuspecting. I'm not sure if they even have a sign up still! You go in and there are two tables filled with the most gorgeous pastries and desserts you've ever seen in your life. It is fun to go right at opening on a Saturday where they explain everything that they have out, because there are no labels or menus to read what everything is. Each offering has so many components to it and is so intricate that half the time I cannot remember the name of what I got or what all is in it! I recommend following their Instagram to see what they will have because it is always different and they give real time updates often about what they have out or if they have sold out early. They have different stuff depending on the day. Friday is donut day! I also recommend ordering ahead online so you can pick an exact pickup time and skip the line! You can add stuff when you go in too even if you preordered, which is nice because the preorder does not appear to include all of what they end up offering that day. I think they often decide last minute to add other stuff which is cool and I respect their creativity!Preorder is the only way for me to have any self control because I want one of everything! The staff is very friendly too. The operation is run by a husband and wife team and if you follow their Instagram, you see how much hard work and love goes into every single item. They also do whole cake orders that are gorgeous looking. If you do go on a Saturday and did not preorder, I recommend getting there a little before they open to get the best pick because a line does form before the 10:30 opening! Came here at the recommendation of a friend. Because I didn't pre-order I had to wait in line for 40 minutes. I like the local style of it and the owners/workers are very warm and personable. There were some children in front of me in line that were touching several pastries so I think that they would benefit from separation from the customers and the pastries just for sanitary purposes. The pastries they have are so unique and creative! They are also giant! I got the pistachio raspberry twice baked croissant that was super delicious. The chocolate filled cookie was also super rich and deliciously filled with chocolate. But my favorite was definitely the brown butter toffee chocolate chip cookie. It had such a depth of flavor I understand why it's their best seller! It would be super helpful if the pastries were also labeled because I had no idea what I was looking at and had to ask a lot of questions. The baked goods are amazing, you will love them. However, a word of caution: I'm particularly sensitive to time based on our toddler's sleep schedule and so placed a preorder on Sunday for Saturday pickup at 12p. Be warned it took 25 minutes beyond my pickup time for me to get my preorder despite showing up early. Perhaps their popularity has outstripped their operational support or I should have placed an earlier pickup time, not sure. read more

If you're in the Garfield Park area... PLEASE TAKE A CHANCE LIKE ME!!! I've rode by this dainty little spot several times just riding public transportation, and because I've always worked Saturday mornings, I haven't had a chance to stop. Well, this past Saturday, I had a chance, and I stopped. When I tell you, I'm so glad I did, IM GLAD!! Chile, these pastries were lined up by various different flavors and styles, lol. I got there long after they had been serving, so my pictures aren't like others when they first get there. Once I stepped inside, I thought I would be able to walk in and look... but to my surprise, the presentations drew me in. I stepped in and immediately got in line. I didn't even know a price or anything, but I knew whatever it was, It would be worth it. I mean, look at all the positive reviews with pictures. Wouldn't that draw you in and make you stay, lol?!?! Stop by today and get a special treat. Enjoy the creativeness that they have applied to each dessert! Oh, an don't be fooled. They also have SAVORY treats and sandwiches served on fresh baked bread!! Cafe Babette never disappoints! I have been a repeat customer since the summer of 2023. This was my first time partaking in the goods since they moved to their current location in Garfield Park. The quality of their pastries is unmatched. It's impossible to pick a favorite but the lemon gooey bun is unreal! There is a reason the preorder sells out in a flash.
