While on a weekend getaway at a nearby lake resort, we decided to drive into Denison for a nice dinner. We were dressed casually, as people often are on vacation, but the staff made us feel completely welcome from the moment we arrived. We seated at a lovely window table overlooking downtown Denison. We started with a shrimp cocktail, big plump, juicy shrimp served with cocktail sauce and a generous swirl of fresh horseradish. It was a wonderful way to start the meal. My dining companion ordered the pot roast with heirloom carrots. Pot roast isn't usually my favorite dish, but let me tell you, this was no ordinary pot roast. The beef was fork-tender, covered in a rich decadent gravy that I won't forget. I had a hard time choosing an entrée because everything sounded so good, but I settled on the ribeye with twice baked potato, and we shared a side of mushrooms. My steak was absolutely incredible, perfectly cooked, bursting with flavor and so generously portioned that I took half home and happily enjoyed it for lunch the next day. What really made the evening special was the hospitality. The staff chatted with us about the history of the building, their favorite items, the town itself. They genuinely made us feel like welcome guests. After dinner, we wandered to the back lounge area, where there's a beautiful full-size bar, plenty of comfortable seating, and live music. We relaxed with after-dinner drinks before heading back to the resort. From the outstanding food to the great service and inviting atmosphere, every part of the evening was exceptional. We came in for an early dinner and started with the crab cake, and wow. It may honestly be the best I have ever had. Perfectly crisp on the outside, packed with real crab, not filler, and the texture was spot on. And the sauce? Incredible. It tied everything together in a way that made each bite better than the last. We also ordered the wagyu meatballs, and they did not disappoint. Rich, flavorful, and cooked just right, definitely not your average appetizer. And do not skip the house made bread. It is an absolute must. Soft and fluffy on the inside with the perfect crunch on the crust. Served with both cinnamon butter and regular butter, and honestly, both were so good it was hard to pick a favorite. For entrées, I had the pot roast, yum. It was served over garlic mashed potatoes with roasted carrots and was pure comfort food done right. My husband and daughter both ordered the ribeye, and they were flavorful and cooked to perfection. My son in law had the double bone pork chop, and every single one of us loved every bite of our meals. One thing to note, there is quite a bit of construction in the area right now. We had to circle the block once, and the designated parking behind the building was full, but we were able to grab a spot out front without too much trouble. And then came dessert. We shared several for the table, and every single one was a hit. The pecan praline cheesecake, do yourself a favor and add the caramel praline sauce, colossal carrot cake, crème brûlée, and bread pudding with a crème anglaise on top were absolutely delicious across the board. The service felt off from the start--we sat at our table for half an hour before anyone brought us bread, and we didn't even realize it was included until then. As for the main course, the dishes had way too many ingredients going on to actually enjoy, which made the steep price tag feel even less worth it. Last night the wife and I visited 34 Chop House and were pleasantly surprised how good it has become. We have been to this restaurant several times since this restaurant opened a few years ago, but last night was the best visit to date. We ate in the bar, which I recommend, and they had live music. The bar was full and the atmosphere was great. I ordered the Shrimp Tempura appetizer, split the wedge salad with the wife and then had the 16 oz ribeye medium rare. To help wash this down I ordered a couple dirty martinis with the blue cheese stuffed olives, which was chilled perfectly. Everything was fantastic and I would recommend. Then after this great dinner we topped the evening off with the carrot cake. All I can say is YES! On top of all of this, the service was great and very attentive, which was impressive because there were several large groups who kept them running. My husband and I ate at 34 Chop House on Saturday, 6/20/26, and were very disappointed in the food. He had the ribeye steak and I had a Cobb salad. The ribeye was super tough and the Cobb salad was probably the worst I've ever eaten. Soggy greens and pre-shredded cheese that had zero taste. We took the rest of our steak home and even the dog wouldn't eat it. For $60, we expected a good cut of meat. Maybe the meat should be sourced from Costco instead of Brookshires. However, I wanted to mention that we were disappointed by the casual atmosphere permitted in the dining room. Seeing other guests wearing baseball caps and shorts felt out of place for the experience we were anticipating, especially given the limited fine dining options in the area. I frequent Doc's part on a regular bases and love the place (The bar side Doc's). I believe its larger that the formal dining (34 Chop House aspect). I have to admit, I have yet to make it into the formal dining (34 Chop House) area in the front. No particular reason, maybe the live music! Either way, just outstanding décor, service and food, all the way around! Never received anything that wasn't exceptional, nor sent anything back for fine tuning. But just a few small things really bug me. #1 the live music is always too loud. Even for a bar. People like to converse and yelling is aggravating. The speakers are always set up in front of the performer, so they (I guess) don't have any idea. Last week, I actually went up in between songs, placed a $20 in his bucket and we conversed in a friendly manner. I ask if maybe he could dial it back just a bit. He said "sure, but when I set up the ~management told me it was just fine(?)" #2 The wonderful sour dough bread. It is more than aggravating that for some reason they don't cut it all the way through to where there are completely independent slices. You have to pick up the entire loaf (which is not polite) and grab the other half and try to "rip" a piece or two off, why slice it in the first place? We later ask for another loaf (it is outstanding) with the main course and same darn thing! This can't be intentional (?) #3 Please don't serve rock hard butter with the bread (or anything for that matter). Have you tried spreading it on a piece of bread ? BTW the cinnamon butter is almost a desert in itself. I know this might be picky to some, but hey, there's always room for improvement! I only wish I could afford to eat, drink and be merry at this place, every night! Go get you some! ;) read more

Beautiful restoration of the old Chase/Independent Bank on Main Street. Love the ambience and the decor, but the food leaves little to be desired. The Caesar dressing is so overpowered with vinegar that it was tough to eat towards the end; however, the shrimp was good. The crab dip felt a little watery, by the taste was there. Loved the froze! Wow! Really fantastic experience. So thankful to find such high quality dining in Denison. Our party of four all enjoyed our appetizers, meals, and desserts. I would recommend the lamb lollipops as an app, all the entrees were fantastic, loved the smoked bread pudding as dessert, but we also shared the carrot cake which may be one of the best I have ever had. Nice wine list too. After our dinner we went to the bar, a hidden gem tucked away in the back of the restaurant. Beautiful ambiance and fantastic service all around. We had the crab cake, caesar salad, and pot roast. The crab cake was a large southern style crab cake with remoulade. Plenty of crab and the remolade was perfect. The caesar was large with parmesan crisps instead of the usual parmesan shavings. Nice change. The pot roast was the star. Four lean chunks of perfectly braised meat in a bed of dense mashed potatoes. Accompanied by a good Chianti this was a perfect meal. Service was outstanding. 34 Slophouse. TL:DR If you want to spend this kind of money, there are plenty of places in DFW that will blow your socks off and be well worth the drive. If you can forego the pomp that this restaurant offers, you can spend half the money and have a better dining experience and more flavorful food here locally. This joint doesn't hold a candle to any decent steakhouse you've ever been to. I double dog dare you to get the $58 ribeye. I walked into this place without expectation, and figured I'd just let it play out. I'm no stranger to fine dining, so while I wasn't taken aback by the pricing on the menu, they've definitely attempted to shoe-horn themselves into very fine company. The apparently recent and marvelously done renovation that was of the "Pinterest, Take the Wheel" sort. It's everything that the fresh-from-out-of-state up-and-comers will love. One wall in the then empty dining area is filled with portraits of famous people that have never been to the restaurant or were all dead. The opposite wall has more interesting art that is markedly more "Western" but you know, hip and cool so as to intentionally remind you that you're in Downtown Denison. I was thankful for the empty tables, because the layout would have assuredly been quite loud had they accidentally managed to fill the place to 50%. Go to any big city, and you'll find a few restaurants with pricing inline with what you'll encounter here. I've dined at and enjoyed my experience at many of those restaurants. What you won't find here are all of the perks of traditional fine dining. Most of the time, when a restaurant has the gall to charge you $12 for a side dish, you'll find that the preparation is excellent, the flavors are delicious and that the portion is commensurate to the "a la carte" price. Here that is not the case, though you can get their famous soggy "Candied" Brussel Sprouts doused in vinegar, the firm and unremarkable "Garlic Whipped Potatoes". You will also find $6-9 beers, $11+ desserts, $13-$16 cocktails and so much more. Having read the room, I buckled myself in for the ride and decided to stick with a basic dish to avoid the disappointment of an unremarkable $60 steak. I chose $32 "Chicken Fried Chicken", which upon delivery to the table, appeared to be a wee cornish hen quarter, heavily brined (my guess) and awkwardly battered and dressed for presentation on a tiny bed of broccolini at the center of a mound of those aforementioned garlic whipped potatoes. This particular dish would have been a non-starter on the menu of much more budget-friendly restaurants (at half the price). My dining companion had set her sights on the $36 pot roast. This may come as a surprise based on the review so far, but the three pieces of "wagyu" stood out as a poor execution of pot roast, though a great way to get rid of the extra forty bucks you had kickin around. In all fairness, the pot roast has been well received by our dogs. At this point, I'll summarize: The building? Rad The seemingly recent makeover? Nice enough to impress the wine mom in your life. The Music? Actually good. Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, etc. Probably the highlight of their efforts. The Menu? They are very, very proud of themselves. The Food? Out of self-preservation, I opted not to get a steak. Of the dishes and sides that I did try, it is impossible to convey how let down I was by the dishes I received. Service was good. Denison deserves better, and that rad old building could be home to one of many great restaurants. Maybe when 34 Slophouse closes, I'll go check out the new restaurant that then makes use of the space. read more

Wanted a special place to celebrate my son's birthday away from Choctaw Casino. Found this intriguing steak house about 20 minutes away so away we went. We're so glad we went. My travels take me to some pretty awesome eating places. This one is right up there with the good ones. Food: shrimp cocktail 4 colossal butterflied crustaceans fresh with a tangy sauce alongside was a scoop of horseradish 5 stars Beverage: a solid old fashion, a crown and 7 , a bottle of Rose' ? 3 stars Entrees: wagyu pot roast , shrimp and grits, cedar plank salmon 4 stars Kids hamburger sliders 2 stars Dessert: 2 huge moist slices of chocolate cake 4 stars. Ambiance is upscale art deco with a slight touch of old style Las Vegas when it was Las Vegas if you get my drift. Music is very listenable classic standards all that's missing is a dance floor suitable for a foxtrot, rumba, maybe even a tango. It's that kinda cool place, you need to go. Whether you can dance or not you need to go ! Service is polished but order some bread when you order your drink, that was our only shortcoming. Now git! read more

With sincere apologies to our server, who was pleasant and accommodating, but decidedly a bit world weary, I was so hopeful after reading the reviews here. Our visit was honestly just bad. A brazen $30 for a laughable, single, tiny piece of "chicken fried chicken" over a mountain of semi-congealed mash and "Cajun tasso" gravy that mostly tasted like it had a disconcerting amount of cumin, of all seasonings, was a wild choice. The "wagyu" pot roast (all three pieces for $36) was somewhat better, but again, suffered from the same quasi-congealed mounds of mash and limp, barely seasoned carrots that longed for the purifying flame of a real roast. Was excited to try the Brussels sprouts, but they arrived lukewarm, vinegary, and decidedly limp instead of the promised crisp candied delights mentioned elsewhere in these reviews. Did we eat at the same restaurant, folks? They comped the sprouts, which was nice, and admitted they were "al dente." Good lord. Sprouts and "al dente" shouldn't exist in the same sentence. First world problems, truly. Wine was good. Nice to find Malbec. Credit where credit is due, right? Two stars, one for the wine, and one for our poor server acknowledging the truth of the matter that the sprouts were sad af, testifying to the reality that 34 Chophouse provides wildly overpriced, pretentious fare in a part of the world that prides itself on ag and the virtues of local-raised beef, so for me, that leaves little room for excuse. The materials for greatness are there, gentlemen. I can only conclude the cocktails must be extraordinary, because it's the only reason I can find the ratings to be so dang high. Spoonful of whiskey helps the sprouts go down, I guess. Yikes. Just suck it up and drive to Dallas if you want a fine-dining date night. read more

Wonderful experience! Our reservations were at 4:00, and there were just 2 of us- so service was stellar! (We've heard from a group of 12 that complained about service being horrible just two weeks prior- so please consider going during non-peak times if you are with a party larger than 4) My husband had the smoked salmon and I had the infamous pork chop and candied Brussels sprouts. We also had a side of the Mac n' cheese and an additional order of candies Brussels sprouts. The pork chop was said to rival Perry's in Dallas- personally thought mine was better than Perry's, I ordered mine medium cooked and it was so tender and juicy it could be cut with a fork. We ordered the Ahi Tuna Layer and Waygu Meatballs- both will be ordered again when we go back! For dessert, we couldn't decide on one, so We went with the creme brulee AND the smoked bread pudding and had ZERO regrets! I tried several glasses of wine, a couple were great pairings thanks to our server, Joel's, recommendations- much appreciated! Had reservations for 7pm. Was told they were running behind at 6:50 since we got there early and that's no problem! I've worked in the restaurant business so I know stuff always happens and I have no problem waiting. It comes to 7:20 and we ask how much longer is should be. They said "we can't give you an exact time but should be 20 minutes". I sighed and said okay so we waited more. We go in at 7:40 and ask how many people were ahead of us and they said 4. It wasn't till 8:15 that they told me the table was ready. Why can't anyone just tell the truth??? I would have just taken my name off the list when I got there if they said it would be more then an hour for my 7pm RESERVATION. Horrible management. read more

We've dined here three times. First experience was good. I find it odd, they called this a "chop house" with only two steaks to choose from. I went with the filet, since it is considered a steak house. It was cooked perfectly and was flavorful. Second visit, my steak was extremely salty and not edible. I ask for a side of vegetables, which they bought a potato that was hard and cold. The bar area seemed to have plenty of servers however, it took a while to get drink refills. Third visit, I went with the shrimp tacos. One piece of small shrimp in each taco and again, was very salty. The service was worse than the previous two visits. Drinks took too long for refills. Very expensive for poor service and food. If you are looking to grab a drink at the bar; designed beautifully,cozy and quaint.
