The pastry is melt in your mouth flaky and fillings generous and savory. The apricot shortbread bars are sinful. I've been there twice and now it's on my list for more regular visits.... They are set up during this time of extra caution for takeout with table barriers at the entrance and staff in PPE; call ahead, order over the internet or place an order in person. Pretty much stuffed to the gills with filling so you don't have any unfilled bites. This, for some reason is really uncommon! Think about it like how bags of chips are mostly air. I was searching for a quiet place to have a light lunch and I'm typically very particular about the empanadas I eat. Anyways, the service was nice. I believe I was rung up by the owner. She had a great sense of humor and helped me decide between the beignet trio and the chocolate alfajores. I went for the beignet trio and WOW she was not kidding when she told me she hasn't received any complaints. They were perfect small doughnuts each with a different filling. I'm not kidding when I say they literally melt in your mouth. You would think that powder sugar, donuts and filling would be too sweet but these were the perfect combination. I will definitely be returning for those! I also bought a chicken empanada and a beef empanada. They were delicious! Soft, flavorful, and warm! The empanadas are paired with a cilantro and red pepper sauce. I'm not usually a cilantro fan but this sauce was great. Nothing was overpowering and the flavors mixed very well together. I ate both empanadas with the sauce and was not disappointed with anything. It only took about 6 minutes to get my food too, so that was also a plus if you're on the go! Clean, friendly and plenty of selections. My first inpression when walking in is a nice, quaint, homely cafe like the ones in South America. The selection of empanadas is insane. I had the chirizo, chicken and spinach and feta. I love the attention to detail from the way they prepare your food to packing your food. The coffe was excellent I had the Americano Iced. The price is just right for a little hidden gem like this place, I would not mind paying starbucks prices. Stopped by to kill some time while my car was being serviced at Toyota and grabbed a coffee to nurse with indoor seating. It smelled lovely the minute I walked in, and I could pick out the mushroom empanada being warmed. It was enough to make me abandon my initial plan to just have coffee and I chose the beef partly because it doesn't have cheese. The empanada comes with a sauce that takes it up a notch! I've officially tried all the vegan empanadas here and my favorite by far is the spicy Italian sausage empanada. I'm not local but this empanada alone gives me a compelling reason to consider moving to California. All empanadas come with chimichurri (except the sweet ones), and you should absolutely eat your empanada with that sauce. 3 empanadas is a very filling lunch for me, 2 would be good for a breakfast. I also took a chance and tried a sweet empanada - the blueberry one. I didn't like the texture of it too much, so don't be bummed about the lack of vegan sweet empanadas. You've got the best empanada on the menu in your section as a vegan. My partner, who is vegetarian, says the mushroom empanada is his favorite from the savory bunch, and the apple from the sweet bunch. He says the peach, corn, and spinach empanadas are alright, but not as good as the mushroom. That said, I'm pretty sure this place raised our empanada standards about 1000 notches in general. The butternut squash and roasted eggplant vegan empanadas are solid too. The overall atmosphere is very cute and the service is kind and welcoming. They also have four different plant milk options - oat, soy, coconut, and almond - and the coffee is delicious. Next time I visit I'll make sure to stay nearby this place so I can keep easy access to these empanadas. This one is worth going out of your way a little bit for, especially if you have other things you'd like to do in the Berkeley area. read more

I had a sweet conversation with who I assume is the owner. Sure the empanadas are $1-2 above average, but I think it was worth it. They were so flavorful and I loved the sauce. Was in Berkeley for business and came in for a quick bite because I was short on time. I have had empanadas quickly prepared before so thought this would do. For instance, I live near a shop that sells good sized empanadas for $2-3. I came in around 8ish AM with only one customer present. They offer a variety of empanadas but none of them were labeled in the case where they were stored. I asked how much and the person helping me didn't know and pointed at the menu for pricing. I looked and ordered one of the vegan empanadas and the lady helping me was confused. She opened other boxes of empanadas looking for them and then another person who knew more came back with a box and pointed which one for her to microwave. The empanada I ordered was eggplant and tomato but it was more so chickpeas and tomato and I didn't really taste any eggplant. I also wondered how fresh the empanada was. Because of the small $5 empanada from a box in the back that was then microwaved and because of service from someone who wasn't knowledgeable and therefore slowed down my morning are cause for just one star. Food wasn't great, service wasn't great, and they sell alcohol but you can't drink on the premise. I see from the comments that this place is new, and my opinion is I'm not sure this place is actually ready to be open. And any feedback given here to the owner seems to elicit defensive responses instead of using them to improve their business. read more

I don't normally spend time writing reviews for places I've visited but we had such a pleasant experience, I find it necessary to share it with the world! I really wish I could give more stars than 5. My girlfriend and I moved to Ashby St. about a month ago. We stopped into this quaint cafe on the corner of Ashby and Shattuck and were welcomed with a smile and greeting. We're so used to the expressionless cashiers at Starbucks that Diana's welcome was a pleasant surprise. When we mentioned to the owner, Diana, that we had just moved to the neighborhood, she said that she wished she could've given us something as a welcome gift (we had already paid at this point). She reached into what I think might've been her own personal selection of chocolate mints and offered them to us. When we bit into our empanadas, it was as if we were biting into a pocket full of heaven. I found it a bit silly that the iced coffee drink I ordered had frothed milk, but maybe that's how they prepare iced coffee drinks in Argentina? I still finished it!
