Discovered this gem around the corner from my chiropractor office. Came in for a cafe con leche... then came back to try breakfast the next time. Cute vibe, and the whole staff is nice and helpful. Out of towners who happened upon this spot on our way to the airport and could not be happier after stopping here! It was 10:30, and I couldn't decide if I was in the mood for breakfast or enchiladas, so "Cafe con Leche" - which advertised itself as a breakfast and lunch spot specializing in Latin faire - seemed like the obvious choice. It was! We started with 3 empanadas, one of each kind, with an especially perfect and punchy chimichurri dipping sauce. For mains, I caved for a before-noon enchilada (excellent choice), and my fiance opted for the breakfast torta with chorizo (equally excellent). Seriously we left so happy, and it was one of our best dining experiences of the entire trip - the happiest accident! This is a favorite spot in my neighborhood, with fast and friendly service, and delicious food. Most recently my friend and I went here for brunch on a weekday. It's exciting to see a local business so busy and energetic even on off hours! The place was busy but we were seated pretty quickly and both had egg based breakfasts (she had an omelet and I had one of the rice and beans and eggs options). The food was great, as was the iced coffee. One thing to note- it's a very small space so probably not ideal to bring strollers into, and may require some maneuvering during busy hours with wheelchairs. The pork was seasoned well and the bread was pressed so that the sandwich was easy to eat with a toasty taste! Bravo well done! I ordered the rice and beans instead of the fries because, hey it's a Cubano. The beans were seasoned well and even the white rice was Puerto Rican white rice. It was clean, I haven't seen a clean place like this in a long time. There is always someone tending to the cleanliness. Our server came and we ordered carne asada fajitas and a carne asada taco plate. We received our meals and OMG were they huge! The fajitas were piping hot and the tacos looked amazing. I couldn't wait to dig in. The fajita steaks were cut large and they came with guacamole. My dining guest didn't get the actual tortilla bread, rice and beans because of diet restrictions, and they were friendly to that. The fajita plate was loaded with meat and veggies and the flavor was phenomenal. The taco plate was just as tasty. It had cotija cheese, guacamole and a generous portion of steak. My guest was jealous of my plate, as I was jealous of his. The prices are great, it's not expensive, and I would pay way more than what I did. I visited Cafe con Leche during the time of COVID-19 on 7/24/2020. They were accepting dine-in and this was the service i enjoyed. Tables inside were spaced out and they have a few tables outside facing the sidewalk as well. The menus are contactless, they have a QR code on each side of the table for everyone to use the camera on their phone to pull up their menu. All you have to do is open your camera app and point it at the code (distance is finicky so go back and forth slowly until it catches it and something pops up at the top of the screen for you to tap on) They have the full menu available (not limited like many restaurants have switched to during COVID-19 operations) No silverware or glassware. It's Latin type of breakfast so make sure you are in the mood for different and not so basic breakfast. Came in here just before closing. I place my order for a Cubano sandwich to go. While I'm waiting for my order, I happen to glance towards the kitchen window. I notice a surly looking member of the kitchen staff glaring at me with what seems to be visible hostility. I think nothing of it and when my food is ready I leave and make the 20 minute drive home. I get home and open the bag. The Cubano sandwich has exactly *one* very thin slice of ham and almost no lechon whatsoever. Let's face it, Cafe Con Leche is going for a certain clientele. This past Saturday, I had the opportunity to swing by as a friend suggested we go for breakfast. I beat her there and knew we were gonna sit outside so they asked front or back. The woman controlling the seat situation told me they dont normally seat people that dont have their whole party there. Out of around 15-20 tables, only 3 were occupied so she figured it made sense to seat me at 9:30 am as it wouldnt have made any sense to have me standing around. Once seated and waiting for late ass, I decided to order a pineapple mimosa which was good. One she showed up, we ordered and I went for the breakfast burrito with chicken. I expected so much out of it and I just wasn't that good...lacked flavor. I assumed the refried beans and rice would be on the side, but it was in the burrito. Sauces didnt do much for it either. Just tried this place for the first time and it's probably one of my favorite brunch spots in Chicago. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and it was delicious. It was my first time having it with an over easy egg but not complaining at all. Above was slightly spicy salsa, below was a crispy tortilla, and on the side were rice, refried beans, and a stack of tortillas. It was bustling yet without a wait - exactly what I look for in a brunch place. Plus a solid reggaeton selection on the speakers. Our server was really friendly and very attentive, as was the rest of the staff. They're incredibly efficient; our food came out no more than 10 minutes after we ordered and our finished plates were cleaned up immediately. There are some high tables and seats at the bar but majority of the seating consists of long rows of empty tables against the walls where one side is a chair and the other is a booth. On the edges of the rows, however, there's a table where both sides are chairs. We were seated at one of those tables and asked if we could sit at the one next to us. Our hostess let us but did so begrudgingly, which slightly bothered me, but I understand that restaurants follow a seating order. The tables are pretty close to each other, which I've come to realize is a norm in Chicago given property prices. (which we didn't know of....so we went for the usual street :P) After some extreme flipping back and forth and asking the server about almost each traditional option I went for the Jibarito (hee- ba- ree- to) sandwich. Which in case you didn't know was originated here in Humboldt park in 1996. The sandwich was huge, it came with a compound butter and fries and could easily run two meals for me. The bread is switched with fried plantains for jibarito and I think its brilliant. The fries were twice fried I believe, because they had this amazing crunch. Delicious!
