This is a very solid restaurant. I can only attest to the sushi since it's all I've had, but it's great every time. On top of that, the servers are some of the best people. Shawn and Gayle are absolutely wonderful and both bring that Hallowell hometown feel to the place. Again, I can only personally attest to the sushi, but I hear good things about the rest of the menu. Looking for sushi in the Mitt of Maine is hard work but I heard from a friend of a friend that this was the place. It's a big space - you walk in to a nice little sushi bar with the signature fish tank (plenty of Nemo's & Dori's in there!) and then a big dining area. It's set up a little like a family restaurant - the atmosphere is outdated and a little bright, but the money is where the food is - we (a group of 4 adults and one 4-yr-old), had lots of sushi and accoutrements. It's kind of 'our thing' when my Mom & brother come to visit that we go and eat the hell out of some sushi. And we did some damage here. 2 Boats plus a few big fancy rolls, sashimi, edamame, gyoza, shumai, seaweed salad, beers and hot saki. We can't help ourselves - and they were very accommodating. It wasn't very busy (1 or 2 other parties, 1 or 2 other couples) but there were times we were left for too long without drinks or ordering our many plates of goodies (perhaps they were being kind to the sushi chef and letting him breathe between courses) and they did run out of yellowtail, which was sad but not the end of the world. Yes, it's actually a Thai restaurant but we didn't partake this time - but our food was solidly good, the price tag was much better than Portland and our experience was nice so we'll be back. read more

The atmosphere was that of a low end, Thanksgiving themed American diner; uncomfortably disparate from the food being served. From the abysmally long menu, I ordered vegetarian pad Thai and my boyfriend ordered sushi. He said, "2 star restaurant with 4 star sushi." The entree was in a close tie with the worst thai food I've ever eaten. It was excessively oily, slightly rancid tasting and had too many vegetable stems. The sushi was great however, and our server friendly & attentive... Over all, I probably wouldn't eat here again. read more

The food here, at least what made it to our table during our 2 hour wait, was amazing. The service (and general competence of the wait staff) was amazingly bad. We waited at the front of the restaurant for about 10 minutes before anyone ever acknowledged our existence, despite being spotted and and passed by numerous waiters and the hostess. We were eventually shown to a table for three: the dining room has a fantastic view of the river and a stunning tropical fish tank. Our waitress showed up about ten minutes later and took our order: some sushi, pot stickers, crab rad prik, and some other noodle dish I can't recall. 20 minutes in, one of us finally had to get up and walk to the bar finally get our own water glasses never brought to us. The pot stickers came 40 minutes into our meal. They were truly awesome, but the plate was overloaded with stupidly frilly garnish that I wish the kitchen had just skipped: look fellas, it doesn't take half an hour to get out a plate of awesome pot stickers. Skip the stupidly fancy garnish, which MUST take time; slap the damn things on a plate; and let your food speak for itself--it truly is outstanding. 50 minutes in, the sushi arrived, which was the whole meal for one of us. So the other two sat and watched. Again, fantastic food, stupid plating and it took waaaaay to long to show up. Screw plating a perfect pile of pickled ginger and a perfectly rolled vertical tower of wasabi. Nobody gives a ray's ass if you can't get a simple, small sushi plate out of your kitchen in less than 50 freaking minutes. About this time, I became parched from thanking our waitress for assuring us every ten minutes that our food was still on the line. Kept asking for water, but everyone was too "busy" being confused about orders and generally playing the amateur game to tend to any of the tables in the restaurant, not just ours. Many other tables were still waiting--nearing 2 hours--when we got up and walked out a the 1 hour, 45 minute mark, without our entrees, unfilled water glasses and a solid determination to never return no matter how good the food. This place could be awesome if they could get organized, and to do that, someone is going to have to pull their head out of their "kitchen," if you get my drift. Stop with the OVERLY fancy presentation: it doesn't make it taste better or arrive at the table quicker. Fire the whole god-damned wait staff, except for the super-tall chick who actually knew what she was doing. Stop trying to be a five-star restaurant until you're at least capable of being a three-star restaurant. Try letting your awesome food speak for itself. Thanks for wasting our time tonight, we won't be wasting yours again anytime soon. read more

I have eaten here many times, all with excellent results. However, yesterday we took the family. My pad Thai was tasteless. Our son ordered a duck dish with a description of two peppers for spicy. We ordered it mild. It arrived very spicy. I will eat very spicy food but this was too spicy for me. Definitely not mild. Has the chef changed? read more

I have visited every Thai restaurant in the area and there is none better. The owner is friendly and goes out of his way to make sure the food is just as you want it. It is a lovely small family atmosphere and I truly enjoy going there. BJB read more

The wait staff was wonderful but waiting for over 80 minutes for our entree is a bit ridiculous. We finally gave up and left. We enjoyed the vegetable tempura that we had as an appetizer and the waitress comped our drinks. I think we will give it another try but never again on a Saturday night. read more

took my wife out to eat there she loves Thai food try the sushi good calamari very nice then came my food smell like a wet dog tasted it like a cooked wet dog i believe they call it beef pod Thai manager came over after the waitress took the food and billed us for the whole thing but he did say sorry on the way out screw you cafe de bangkok my wife could had been very sick she is 4 months pregnant lucky for us there was kennebeck pizza co loved it brick oven and the candy shop i would give the thai food place a zero star but its not an option hope noone is missing their dog in hallowell read more

Excellent sushi, a great local joint. Not the cheapest menu in the area, but this is thai food and not the McDollar menu. Good views overlooking the Kennebec and the huge saltwater aquarium makes the place unique to any of the other local restaurants. Service has always been good and the owners always greet us when they're in - highly recommended! read more

New ownership (which apparently took over sometime during the past year or so) has completely turned my family and me away from this restaurant, which during the previous decade had been one of our favorite places to eat - when it was operated by a previous Thai family. Yesterday, we stopped in for an early dinner: it was a little after 4 p.m. and there was only one other table of diners, who'd already been served their dinners. So we expected reasonably prompt delivery of our "combo-combo" appetizer, which I specifically asked to be delivered before our dinners. That didn't happen, though. After waiting what seemed like an unacceptably long period of time, two of our three dinners arrived...but not the appetizer! Both my Pad Thai and my daughter's chicken Pad Thai were about half the size of what we were accustomed to being served when the former owners operated the business! Several minutes later my wife's meal arrived, and shortly after that the waiter unapologetically dropped the combo-combo appetizer plate on our table. The appearance of this "group appetizer" plate shocked me even more than the diminutive Pad Thai servings, because it looked like it contained only about half of the volume of various appetizer items that used to be included...again referring to a time when the restaurant was run by the previous owners! Admittedly, about 10 minutes after the sparse combo-combo plate had been delivered, the waiter came back with another small plate containing five additional items that should have been part of the appetizer when it was first delivered. Just as he didn't offer an explanation for the belated delivery of the first half of the appetizer, likewise, he didn't apologize for serving the "missing portions" of the appetizer even more belatedly! Just dropped them on the table and said, "Here's the rest of the combo-combo"! I should add that even with the second portion being added, the combo-combo serving was still a couple skewered meat items short of what we'd previously been served by the previous owners. To be completely fair, however, the main courses were tasty. But the diminished portions, the lack of attention to timely and proper order of service, and the apparent indifference to the service oversights really was a shocking disappointment. The new owners apparently are still making improvements (including an expansion into the former abutting pizza place that shared the same building)...so maybe that's why the big, mesmerizing saltwater fish tank, which we always previously enjoyed looking at, was completely drained. The nice river view is still there, of course. But my daughter noticed that the table cloth on her side of the table was badly soiled with old food stains. Finally, in past years, we always appreciated the very warm welcoming comments and gestures from the previous owners when we arrived to be seated; the very polite and highly attentive service that their Asian waitresses provided us, and the gracious gestures of kindness that we received from the owners as we left. By sharp contrast, we received none of that quality service during yesterday's visit. We won't be going back again. (Oh! The same family that previously operated Café De Bangkok also operated a second Thai restaurant at the Augusta airport, and we found equally great service and food whenever we opted to watch planes take-off and land - rather than enjoy the river views in Hallowell. Unfortunately, though, that airport restaurant also closed last year!) read more
