Watami made me think I was finding a hidden gem that you wouldn't find unless you were looking for it. A gem of a place it is too, with very welcoming and attentive staff and great food. Maybe the lights were a little harshly bright, but otherwise a fine place to dine. We didn't get too many things, as we stopped in more for a finisher for the evening than full meal (we'd come from a party with small foods). We ordered a shoyu ramen and a dragon roll. Interesting note on the dragon roll, it has a sweet potato interior. This led to a distinct flavor from other rolls I've had in the past, and a smooshier texture, but a good roll nonetheless. The ramen was mostly a delight. Sumptuous broth, the egg was not too hard nor soft, and almost all the ingredients were perfect. Which I usually avoid that word because it's too subjective, but it seems to fit here. Major exception is the chashu pork. It was overcooked to the extreme. No other word for it, these dried out circles of meat were thick and chewy, and soaking them in the broth couldn't save them. Sad. Otherwise, some of the best ramen I've had since leaving Japan. The only other note I'd have is I just wanted some tea, and had to order a weird tea concoction to get it. Sometimes you'd just like an oolong tea, nothing fancy. It's too bad I have to write this. When I really need sushi/sashimi I know I can get very good fish at Watami. We've been going since they opened. We won't go anymore because unfortunately the place has gotten really dirty. My husband went to use the men's room and was shocked to find how filthy and smelly it was. Then there was the sticky table we were eating at. Once you notice a couple things you start to look around and yuk, it really needs a deep cleaning. Going up the back stairs is enough to make you sick, garbage drippings, grease, dirt. The food was very good but he also had bowel issues a few hours later which could be attributed to dirtiness. Won't be back when it's only 20 minutes further to great Portland sushi places that are CLEAN. read more

Food was excellent. Waitress had some trouble taking our order her tablet didn't seem to work. However there were a few things that bothered me; the menu was filthy, sticky. The drape between booths was dusty. The floor was dirty in spots but since it's a basement I can be understanding of that. The meals came out almost at the same time as the appetizers which gave us no time to eat them. And their was a fly dive bombing our meal through most of it. Then when the bill came a rather large Tim as already added in. Now I understand we were a large party of 9 however we split up our bills at the time of ordering into smaller groups. But the tip added in on my bill was quite hefty and it was just two Poke bowls and fried rice. I will say this the food was amazing and that's really what saved the evening. I may give them another try but for that money I expect a better overall experience. read more

have listed this restaurant as one of the best sushi restaurants in Maine. visited many times and have done take out a number of time. Yesterday i picked up a 70.00 take out order and had a draft beer while waiting. I noticed as i sat at the take out location that the young lady pouring the beer only took a little from the draft and then poured old beer from a pitcher to fill the glass. trying to save the old beer that came out as foam when keg was tapped. the boss , another young lady showed the girl how to swirl the beer in the pitcher to add life. Bad practice , needs to stop, makes for flat and bad tasing beer. not sure how long the beer from the pitcher was there before being added to my glass. This is our favorite go to spot! We always go at least every month, sometimes multiple if we can (we have a bit of a drive to get there but we'd go every day if we could). Food is always fresh and tasty, beautifully plated with lots of options. Probably the best ramen and sushi around that I've found! Service is always attentive and respectful, some of the best we've experienced going places. The ambiance is always perfect and never a bad experience. I always recommend friends and family here and would tell anyone you have to go! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. read more

Best boba ever? The tapioca here is sooooo good I used to drive all the way from Augusta just to get it. Sushi is super fresh- very soft and good. OK prices, expensive but what sushi isn't. The food is always excellent here. Although it's in a basement level it is warm, comfortable, and inviting. Five sushi rolls and a buckwheat shrimp noodle dish. Seaweed and house salad. I am here to comment on the very concerning and dangerous practice that this restaurant preforms I ordered 4 different sushi roll trays for 4 different people, we also ordered fried rice and beef one spicy and one regular The restaurant combined all different sushi in the same tray. when confronted with this concerning delivery the restaurant said "You did not specify that you did not want all your sushi in the same tray" as a consumer, I am shocked that I need to tell a business not to combine all the entrees in one plate. I asked which rice tray is spicy and which one is regular? she said "it is the one that is more red" I told her what if I was color blind? what effort on the business end would have cost the business to separate the sushi and label the rice. end result: to avoid allergic reactions and injury to my colleagues, I re-ordered and paid for the replacement order. The BEST boba shop in MidCoast. They use real tea & real fruit, not artificially-flavored crap. Get the cheese foam topping...it's essentially a light whipped cream that tastes like cheesecake. In the basement of Richard's, with the tiniest sign blocked by a flag. Not exactly the best informational set up. Almost like a speakeasy feeling, but with a Japanese clean wood ambiance. Miso soup came out almost cold; bit of a disappointment. Garden salad was very large, and the seaweed salad was tasty, however. This place was a must stop on my way through Brunswick! After browsing the menu online, I was excited to taste the food, and it definitely didn't disappoint. Was it the most insane sushi I've ever had? No, but it was still tasty and I would definitely go here again to try different items. I got both the lychee iced tea and the jasmine green milk tea to try. I can't say enough good things about the lychee tea!! What a delicious, refreshing drink! Online ordering has the option to tone down the sweetener by percentages, which I opted to do. It was 30% sweetened, and it was plenty sweet for me. The jasmine tea was delicious as well! For food, I ordered a Philly maki and the Watami poke bowl. For the sushi: the rice was consistently spread, the roll held together, and the salmon was fresh and delicious. The ratio of cream cheese to salmon was a little off, which was really the only flaw. I would've preferred more fish in a perfect world! The poke bowl: I was really excited about this! It was very good, but I've had more flavorful poke. The actual amount of fish was very small, and the chunks of fish were cut fairly large. The even spread of fish throughout the bowl was lacking. The seaweed salad didn't have a distinct flavor, which was disappointing. The spicy Kano salad was not spicy, and definitely overpowered the other flavors in the bowl. It was enjoyable, but it could've been improved in a drastic way! I ordered take out, but the restaurant was laid out nicely, was very clean, and the servers were friendly and helpful. Ordered takeout online on my way to Brunswick. Watami called me shortly after submitting the order to confirm I understood one of the items ordered was raw fish on rice and not sushi. My husband did know this but we were very appreciative for the call to confirm. Conveniently while on the phone, we asked for them to wait to prepare our order as we were still 25 minutes out. They agreed happily. Watami is located in the old Pedro O'Hara location which is down a set of stairs. There's a large free parking lot directly adjacent so no driving around trying to find a parking spot. We parked, ran in, paid and were back at the car in 5 minutes. The space and decor was nice. I'd definitely return for a dine in experience. The food was nicely presented in the takeout containers. The avocado salad was absolutely the star. This is one of the coolest hidden spots in Brunswick. Downstairs next to Richard's entrance is a super mod subterranean Japanese eatery with decent food, nice sake menu and friendly service. We can't say it's among the best sushi in Maine or the best noodles but it's definitely a great addition to this city. Our sushi was ok as were dumplings and noodles. The tofu app was totally bland. Presentation was tops. Brunswick needed a cooler sushi vibe. read more

At first I thought the back entrance was a bit sketch, but soon enough it gave way to a beautifully furnished basement with many Japanese accents throughout. It didn't take long for us to get seated (We went around 8 on Saturday night) nor did it take long for us to receive our food. My girlfriend and I shared a watami boat for two, which we almost didn't finish, due to the large portion size. Fish is definitely better than Little Tokyo's, but I still wouldn't say it's anything special.
