We were lucky to get the most fresh, warm, crisp chips and salsa! Their salsa was well blended and paired nicely with the fresh guac. Their salsa little blue pot was such a treat. The waitress helping our group took great care of us, service was prompt and expedient with the drinks and food ordered. I was told that the gospel fried chicken was good so that's what I tried. The fried chicken was fairly good but the gospel, well that's pushing it, they used white meat. i'm sure any gospel would not do that. Fried chicken should be dark meat, white meat should be regulated to other uses, god if I know what for but definitely not fried. Every time I come I swear I'm going to order Mexican. But.....I get the Gospel Fried Chicken. Seriously I have been ordering this plate for probably a decade now, whether it's on Sunday when I'm leaving VC or now on a Thursday night. This go to dish reminds me of the crispy crunchy fried chicken my mom would make, on all days, Sunday. Along with mashed potatoes and gravy. The plate comes with corn and cole slaw, but not a fan of slaw in general I opt for extra taters and gravy. Service is always great and friendly. Depending on your visit, if you come during an event in town, you should make reservations. Rio is that popular. But tonight, on a quiet Thursday night before the crowd arrives this weekend, two of us had no problems walking in and being seated immediately. Rio does offer some delicious looking tacos, enchiladas and burritos. As well as salads and some hot sandwiches. Rio also offers 12 different margaritas flavors to accompany your Mexican cuisine, as well as a full bar. They have their own parking lot. In VC that's gold. We made reservations with Cafe Del Rio weeks in advance for a group of four on Halloween night in Virginia City. We arrived ten minutes early, and while there was a table open, the group that walked in ahead of us got seated. We waited 35 minutes, and were eventually seated. It was a busy night, but reservations should have been honored. Next, we ordered cocktails. While pricey at $18, we got Margaritas with no salt on the rim. They came out with plenty salt on the rim. It got wiped away, and we continued on. Dinners were ordered, two with no onion. Those two came out with plenty of onions. It was a preference and not an allergy, so we picked them out. The 'Blue Pot' was a rather pricey cup of rice, beans, meat, and onions. It came with two small street-taco tortillas. My friend and I asked for more, and because it was so busy, it took about ten minutes. We were nearly done by the time they came out, split in half, no less. Ultimately, none of this ruined our night, but we had hoped for better than we received. The staff were all extremely busy with a full house, and did their best, but mistakes were made. We wanted a five-star visit, but Cafe Del Rio only earned two. Our third time here in as many years will likely be our last, unfortunately. read more

Not sure how this place has 4.5 stars. Taco Bell has more flavor than this place. Food is extremely bland and overpriced. Portions are small, the employees seemed to hate their existence and barely wanted to interact with anyone. It also takes about an hour or so to actually get your food. Don't waste your time or money here. You're better off driving to Reno or Carson and pulling into Taco Bell's drive thru. I tried to do my research beforehand my friend suggested a pizza place where a review stated there are no safety measures being taken . Upon researching online the website stated limited seating , reservations only, I thought it would be a safe bet. I called and place reservations a few days ahead. When my friend and I showed up "masked up". Aside from the waitresses and one other person we were the only masks in sight. There were two waitresses manning the entire place and it seemed every table had guests. The tables didn't appear to be 6 feet apart. The drink was good, it was made with a kick. I could taste the pomegranate. To try something different I ordered the blue pot, a side of flour tortillas and in the pot were carnitas rice and beans. The carnitas were chunks and the flavoring was a little dull but I tried to make the best of it. There were chips and salsa but some of the chips appeared to be stale. We had our bill placed on the table without being offered dessert. While seated I saw a monstrous brownie that I may have ordered to make up for my meal. Definitely an experience but maybe next time I'll stick with in town eating . read more

My family and I are visiting Virginia city from Los Angeles. With all the walking and site seeing we were starving and came to cafe del rio. The place looked cute and the menu displayed outside looked good. However when we walked in the host walked off after asking how many people were in our party. We waited for over 15 min to be seated and every time we asked for an update she was short and rude saying "your table is being set up" although we can clearly see the table is ready and no one is setting anything up. We really didn't feel welcomed and it seemed almost as if they were inconvenienced by our presence. Not once did someone smile or apologize for the wait. When we were finally seated the waitress took our order and our food took 25 min to be served. And it came to the table 2 entrees at a time so we did have to wait for everyone's meals to be served. I ordered a Chile Relleno and a Carnitas taco and I'll tell you I can do better at home. The Chile Relleno, beans and rice all lacking flavor.
