Several decades ago, Little Tokyo had plenty of decent eating spots, though a limited assortment (late-night Japanese cuisine, shabu shabu, sushi, a Mexican place), but with many more people moving into the area and the Arts District nearby, it's now kind of hopping with a number of ramen and boba shops catering to twentysomething tastes and Cafe Dulce, a bakery and coffee spot of the now with schnazzy looking vegan doughnuts. With no expectations, I ordered a caprese sandwich with French bread that was crisp like I had been transported across the Atlantic and cucumbers, pesto, mozzarella and tomatoes making for an unexpectedly inspired sandwich. The staff here are not so friendly and welcoming, and they're a little resistant in offering any recommendations or suggestions. I was a bit tentative in trying out some of their cream donuts as the fruit didn't look so fresh on them. Two things that I noticed as that the space is a bit awkward, as the cafe sits on a corner, with narrow spaces on opposite ends; and, the place was a bit dirty. Located in the middle of the Little Tokyo plaza, this is a pretty good place to get a good Matcha latte and yummy pastries. I recommend parking in the structure and getting your parking ticket validated here. Workers were not super friendly, but service was super fast for my drink because it was premade. The matcha drinks they already have premade in big jugs and they'll just pour it into your cup and give it to you. I got the matcha blueberry latte with oat milk, and I wish I just got the regular matcha. The blueberry matcha tasted very floral, and I do not like floral flavors. It was also super sweet-- a little too sweet for me. Price was pretty normal for a cafe. The cafe is really tiny, it's just a grab-and-go type of spot. I have many reasons to have a Japanese Village Plaza crush! The plaza has so many stores selling cute Hello Kitty merchandise (hint hint Sanrio store woohoo!) but now I have a PSL crush thanks to Cafe Dulce located right at Japanese Village Plaza. Blueberry Match Latte, Lavender Tea Latte...hmm i was so excited to try one and I had almost made my decision when I spotted their seasonal special.....drum roll please....Dulce PSL! Being the pumpkin fan that I am, I knew instantly I had to try it out. I patiently waited as the Cafe Dulce barista made my drink and soon I got a freshly made, beautiful pumpkin spice latte. There was even a little bit of latte art! (I am a sucker for latte art and was thrilled with this little detail). I was even more thrilled when at first sip. It had the perfect pumpkin taste and honestly one of the best that I've had. I'll admit, I am one of the ones who thinks Starbucks PSL is amazing and hard to surpass (yes, I know...admitting this may cause some backlash and some may frown at my chain PSL crush...but hey it's one of my favorite holiday drinks) but I was impressed that Cafe Dulce's was equal if not even more delicious in pumpkiness.. Cafe Dulce has the gold standard for matcha lattes! I've tried both the regular iced Matcha Latte and Blueberry Matcha Latte, both are amazing!! I like to alternate between the two drinks to spice up my order. I'd recommend the Blueberry Matcha slightly more, since it's a bit more unique and something that not all cafes sell. The blueberry flavor is subtle and the drink is perfectly sweetened! The drink is $5.25 for a regular size, so it's pretty standard for a coffee shop in DTLA. It's smooth and refreshing to sip on while walking around Little Tokyo on a warm afternoon :) I have yet to try the donuts and baked goodies but they looked really yummy and colorful in the display. This place is great, and the staff is really helpful! Because of covid we can't go inside, so the person helping me let me point to all the things I wanted in the window. And when we got to two items that I was trying to decide between, I had to mime the question of which she liked better. She didn't skip a beat, and helped me narrow it down. She also helped me decide what latte to get, as I was stuck between three.. The winner was the Cafe Dulce latte, which I highly recommend! I was warned that it was on the sweet side, but I honestly didn't think it was too sweet. I thought it was just perfect! Do yourself a favor and get the blueberry bun. Out of everything I got, I can say with confidence that it was my favorite thing from there. I would go back there specifically for it, and I intend to. I also got the maple macadamia donut, and the coffee crumble donut. While I wish that the doughnuts were a bit taller and fluffier, they are spot on in their flavors. I'm usually not a fan of coffee flavored doughnuts because the flavor is typically faint and half hearted. Not here, though! I also wish the macadamia doughnut had a bit of chopped macadamia sprinkled on top, but it's not a big deal. I would definitely order one again. If you find yourself in Little Tokyo looking for tea, coffee, donuts, or more, definitely give this place a try. The food will not disappoint. Parking in this area isn't the best, but on Sundays, a lot of the meters are turned off and street parking can be found a few blocks away. We got there late ~8pm so the donut may not be the freshest. They still had a good selection that late in the night. I even had a hard time deciding since everything looked good. For the hazelnut peanut crumble, I was surprised that there was a decent amount of peanut flavor. You could definitely taste both the hazelnut and peanut butter in the donut. I think the hazelnut cream was the highlight of my trip to Dulce. (It was better than the custard in the green tea donut.) My only complaint was that the crumble on top was not a crumble, it was soft and kinda stale. May have to do with the time I visited. I also got the green tea donut. The donut was a lot softer than the hazelnut one, but flavor-wise, the hazelnut cream was my favorite. Just not too big of a fan of the very-present-peanut flavor and their crumble. Nothing stood out too much about this for me. I was debating for a long time between the green tea roti and the green tea donut, but since the hazelnut peanut crumble was already a buttercream filling, I decided to get the green tea donut with a custard filling. The "melted buttercream" description on the green tea roti kinda put me on the fence. However I'd give the roti a shot next time seeing how I liked the hazelnut buttercream. An amazing donut shop that sometimes even has their sausage donuts. They're a full breakfast/lunch spot with sandwiches and salads and high quality tea and coffee. The coffees and teas are well made. Certainly better than the mass-market chain stuff. I usually just get a cold brew if I'm wanting a drink. They also have a bunch of baked goods despite seeming to use donuts as their main selling point. The fruit tart is pretty delicious with a buttery crust, a tasty custard, and many glazed fruits including blueberries, strawberries, and mango. Their best donut is the green tea one with red beans. Among other options are cereal, bacon, and candy bar donuts. Toasts, rotis (fruit filled and crust covered), and others can be found too. For reference, there exists a Snickers donut and blueberry roti (blueberry jam and top). Most famously, they release the sausage donut every so often: a hotdog wrapped in donut dough and panko with a choice of mustard or sweet chili. Originally this only came out twice a year but Cafe Dulce has been collaborating to release this more frequently. It comes with a sweet chili sauce and a mustard sauce. It's pretty much as described; nobody, health conscious or not, would call it good for you. Almost everyone would call it tasty and a worthy cheat, though. Consider Cafe Dulce one of the older high-end donut shops that dependably leans into Japanese-American tastes. read more

Green tea red bean roti should have more red bean for the price they charge. Their renowned green tea custard donut is too oily and sweet for me. My go-to place in LT for a sweet treat and Asian American drinks. I love all the pastries here but my favorite is the roti buns. The matcha roti buns are my fave. I also think their lunch items are underrated. I've always enjoyed their salads but of course, the main reason why I come here are for the coffees and teas. There are two Cafe Dulces in LA: one in USC Village and one in Little Tokyo. Cafe Dulce has a distinct pastry smell -- I'm not quite sure what the smell is from but it reminds me of Cafe Dulce's unique fusion pastries, speciality coffee, and food. I love that they have a display of all the pastries that they offer, so you can decide which one you like. They are also open for take-out during COVID, and even outdoor seating. I've gotten a variety of items from here, and we have gotten donut boxes from here as well. My favorite pastries are the green tea brick toast (it is baked in condensed milk and has a chewy, glazed texture) and the rotis that don't have anything inside them. Their other donuts are good as well, but I personally prefer the plainer kind of pastries. If you're into donuts with custard, frosting, or toppings, Cafe Dulce offers them as well! Their coffee drinks are good too. Their Dulce latte is very sweet, so I prefer their regular lattes. The only downside is that the drinks are not the cheapest, but that is normal for most coffee shops in LA. The Cafe Dulce in USC Village offers some sandwiches and salads. My friends have gotten their breakfast burritos and it always looks + smells SO GOOD. That is something I'm planning on getting next time. read more
