I had eaten at this restaurant several years ago and remembered it as having 4-star or so quality. Recently, I went back, and I was disappointed. We ordered miso soup and hot and sour soup, and both were good. We also ordered sushi, and it was passable but bland. However, I found the entrees inedible. We ordered drunken noodle, a fried rice dish, and some sort of chicken stir fry. I'm not sure what it was about them...they tasted much too salty, but it went beyond that. Something about them tasted wrong and my body and palate told me that I would get sick if I proceeded to eat them. I was unable to eat more than a few bites of the food, before I had to stop and go hungry, after which I ate at home. It was a very unsatisfying experience. I would not go back. read more

"Thai curry" with shrimp not very Thai, although I think I detected a sliver of Thai basil amid the overabundance of mushy carrots and green peppers. I should've grabbed a couple more leaves from my garden. "Special" Dragon & Phoenix had very small "jumbo shrimp," but huge chunks of gelatinous, corn starchy General Tsao chicken. And just like our last takeout, the veggies were most definitely frozen peas and carrots. Oh yes, and the highlight: ONE water chestnut. (LOL oh WHEN will i ever learn???) I've lived in the NY/NJ/Philly areas for many years. Moving to the Lancaster area I found it was a challenge to find quality sushi and Asian cuisine. Cafe East is an exception. The sashimi platter is always fresh and delicious. Plus the price point t is lower and the quality better than other sushi places I've tried in this area. We also love the spicy yellow tuna rolls, seafood soup, and shrimp fried rice. If you ever have a chance to sit at the sushi bar, the sushi chefs are always so friendly. If you're ordering take out, call first otherwise be prepare to wait. read more

Usually the food and service is average to good. Unfortunately the last time we went, we ordered take out and were given and estimated wait time of ten minutes. Twenty minutes later, our food came out missing one entree. We then had to wait an additional ten minutes, and when we got home we were missing an order of spring rolls. I understand things happen, but in my opinion it's poor management not to address this issue with the customer and simply shrug it off. Yet another very tasty meal. My wife got the sashimi as usual but tonight I tried the drunken noodle dish. It says spicy but rarely is any dish as spicy as I like it, I asked for some peppers in oil and added that to the dish along with a tad soy sauce. It was quite tasty. Only went with 4 stars instead of 5 because yet again the soups were bland. I had the hot and sour, my wife had the miso and my son had egg drop. All seemed a bit weak in flavor. read more

If I could give this place less then 1 star I would. The past 5 times we came here we have had the same waitress, she got worse each time. This time was the breaking point, she took our order then got food for herself and took a break, there were 4 other employees taking there break too. Me and my girlfriend waited about 15 mins for 3 sushi rolls (2 sweet potato and 1 avacado roll). 3 which shouldn't take alot of time to make. The avocado roll was that mushy and mealy the rest was left. It will be a long time before we come back here again. read more

My husband and I eat here often and we think it's the best around. I love that there are so many choices - seems like with Asian food, we always order the same thing. At cafe east, it's easy to try new dishes. The other thing I like is the option for brown rice. For the health conscious, this is great choice you don't often see. I recently tried the tofu... Which I had never had in my life... I couldn't believe how flavorful it was! I honesty don't know how anyone would think the food is bland. But then again, I tend to go for the spicier foods. I can't comment on the sushi since I have never tried it - there, or anywhere for that matter. Just not a fan of it. Another nice note is that you can stop in the state store right next to cafe east and pick up your BYOB. They carry small cartons of wine (about 2.5 glasses) which is nice with the meal. Cafe East will open your bottle and serve the wine to you in a nice wine glass. Who needs a liquor license when I can choose from my own wine list? They recently remodeled and now the place looks even more upscale. The food is very good and the wine is close by. It makes for a nice evening. read more

I love this place. I order take out from here a lot and have eaten in quite a few times and it is great. The General Tso Chicken has the best sauce on it and the sushi is really good, my favorite being the Philadelphia Roll. The Crab Rangoon is to die for, I get it every time I order. My only gripe is they changed the sauce they include with the Crab Rangoon. I don't like the new sauce they include with it, it seems a bit spicy. read more

I had been going to Cafe East for years. I had heard they went under new management, so my husband and I went to try it out. He had never eaten there before. We each got an entree and split a Philadelphia Roll. We both ended up getting violently ill from the sushi. We had eaten meals with family members and other friends, and none of them had food poisoning. Therefore, we were able to narrow it down to Cafe East. We both missed work for two days and ended up having to go to the doctor. I will not be returning to a place that serves sushi that makes someone incredibly ill. Horrible experience. read more

This is one of the most OVERRATED, OVERPRICED restaurants ever with HORRIBLE QUALITY FOOD!!! AVOID THIS PLACE LIKE THE PLAGUE!!! I was in the Lancaster area looking for take-out this past Saturday night. I normally avoid Chinese take-out due to the poor quality, but I saw that this restaurant had pretty good reviews so I went to their website. I looked at the prices and they were similar to PFChangs (the best Chinese restaurant ever). I figured if they were charging that much & getting good reviews, the quality must be very good....I was so wrong! I ordered General Tso's Chicken for $11.50 and my husband got Hot & Spicy Beef for $11.50. When I called to place the order, I asked if the General Tso's came with broccoli and was told "yes". My husband picked up the order and it ended up coming to ~$25 with tax, which is expensive for take-out. That would be ok if the food was at least good, but it was not at all! My General Tso's Chicken was ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING!!!! Every piece of chicken (I wouldn't even call it that) was 3/4 slimy, goopy fat & breading with a tiny piece of chicken. I've seen General Tso's chicken like that at $5 buffet, but not at higher end restaurants, especially when charging $11.50 for it!!! I ended up being so grossed out that I threw out the majority of my meal. Oh & it was supposed to "come with broccoli"...they gave me 2 pieces! Ya thats right...a meal that expensive and all they could give me was 2 lousy pieces of broccoli!!! My husband's hot & spicy beef was "ok"...the meat was chewy & the sauce was a little bland, but it was far more edible than mine so we ended up splitting that. The worst part of the story is I called the restaurant today to speak to the manager to let them know my dissatisfaction...if their food was bad, their customer service was even worse!!! A woman named "Tina" answered the phone. I asked to speak with the manager. She insisted that I tell her what was wrong. I asked her what her title was and she said "officer"...for all the times that I have eaten out in my life and even worked in the restaurant business years ago, I have never heard of a position called "officer". Tina wouldn't put anyone else on the phone so I had to talk to her. To begin, she continually cut me off and said that what I was saying wasn't true...no apology to be had. She was also very rude & sarcastic when she did speak. When I said I was going to put a review online, she said, "you better do that after what happened". I then asked again to speak to a manager and she HUNG UP the phone on me. I called back and said I couldn't believe she hung up on me and I wanted to speak to a manager. All the sudden her story changed and she then said, "I am the manager, part owner". I said I couldn't believe then how she was treating a customer who was calling about poor quality food. She used 1 curse word at me. When I called her out for that, she HUNG UP on me AGAIN! I would never go to this restaurant again (or recommend to anyone) not only because of the disgusting food, but also the rude, unapologetic officer/manager/part-owner, Tina!!! read more

Cafe East was my go to Chinese food destination, but after tonight I will be looking for another place. I ordered Sesame chicken with fried rice and an egg roll. The chicken was gummy filled with veins and gristle and not crispy and delicious like it normally is. The fried rice was flavorless! I added soy sauce and it was flat. The egg roll looked like it had been pulled out of the grease and thrown into the bag. It was dripping in fat and mushy. Blech! So disappointed!! read more

This place is owned by the same people as Mojos, and the food is exactly the same. Which is, by no means, a bad thing. I ordered the sushi and sashimi platter for two (don't worry, it wasn't just me) and the presentation, taste, and ambience was just stunning. It was a filling platter, even for someone with a large appetite, and the layered effect of the separate sushi area and the higher sashimi bowl. All lined with decorative greens, fences, and edible touches, the platter looked fantastic. The two rolls, the California and a spicy tuna were good, but the shining part of this dish was the nigiri and the sashimi. How does this place only have a 3-star review?? Cafe East is amazing for the area -- it is THE place my fiance and I go for sushi. I may be bias, since it's where we had our first date as well, but the atmosphere is great, the service is great, the food is great, everything is great. It is the only foreign restaurant where I feel confident enough to call and place an order. We recently veered from sushi and ordered their Taiwanese Rice Noodles...and they too were amazing. had intense craving for chinese food friday and based on yelp reviews gave this place a try. ordered the following: crispy noodles with sauce, eggroll, crab rangoon, triple chicken (sweet/sour, sesame, and pineapple chicken), and pork lo mein. it was ready fast and bill came to $33, bit on the high side for chinese but not outrageous. it was ok. socks were not blown off. filled my yearly craving for chinese and didn't make me sick so i'm going to go with 3 stars. it's so hard to find good chinese food!! inside the restaurant looked nice and they also have a sushi menu that i didn't try. read more

Cafe East is my "go to" place. The food is always very good. The staff is pleasant and accommodating. I've never had a bad experience there. I usually get take out but when I eat in, it's most often with a large group. We bring our own wine and that is never a problem. read more

The food here is the best. We go out of our way to get take-out from here. Much more expensive than typical Asian cuisine restaurants, but it's worth it. Also, they are the parent restaurant to Mojo off of Lititz Pike. Although Mojo has a nicer facility, the food is far superior at East. read more
