Couple minutes after sitting down a man came up to us to tell us that we aren't supposed to sit there but told us we could stay because it was the hostess​ fault. The service was okay but they did forget to bring us our calamari. The sangria was 5dollars and I liked the red one. Its a bit packed, the lighting was not pleasant. Ok. Wife and I came to Ventura for a covid get outta da house afternoon. We are going wine tasting, but decided to eat firat, wise move. Came across this eatery on way to winery. Wow, could not have picked a better place. I ordered the calzone of the week. All meat, delicious, came with small salad. Price was outstanding. My wife ordered the cheese crusted chucked arugula salad. She was in heaven. Service was top notch, not over beari g but attentive. My only minor negative, is their patio needs a power wash. No apology, no nothing. This was on top of the fact that a woman nearby was seated after us, but had food before a waiter even came to greet us. (The young man bringing the water and bread was very attentive.) So it is now clear to me why it was so easy to get in on a Sunday night when the rest of Downtown was so busy. The food was sub-par, Lasagna came swimming in oil and was tasteless, New York steak was tasteless and anything but tender. I'll grant my avocado martini was delicious. Leaving the restaurant I could see several open seats (nearly empty dining room) and the rest of Downtown was busy busy busy. Oh my! I've enjoyed this place many times before. I was in a great mood for a good glass of wine to compliment my day. The wine menu recommended a few. I decided to pay the extra $few for their Top Shelf. The server told me that they liked that wine too! (how could I go wrong?) The color mirrored an early vintage Welch's Grape Juice that has been well aged in an old reusable oak barrel with just the right hint of wet sock. My nose caught the undertones of Vanilla Extract with mopped up cherries from the floor. After a couple very small sips I laughed and asked my wife to sample its bouquet. She gave me a look as if I asked her to smell my finger. She asked if this was their most expensive pour? I replied YES, then told me to send it back. I figured if I would probably not send back food that was mundane so why would I make a big deal of a cheap wine at a higher cost. I then put it aside and enjoyed some refreshing Ventura tap water. (quite the liability for a restaurant's reputation - Twist off cap wines should never be the most $$ on the menu. One year ago my wife and I had our reception dinner here. Kristy helped us plan everything and was really able to help us out of a bind after another venue had double booked our date and was extremely rude to us for not wanting another wedding reception in the same room. Cafe Fiore was a wonderful place to have our reception and both our families always want to go back here. The butternut squash ravioli is like nothing you've had anywhere else. Kristy and the rest of the staff were all super nice and attentive to our party and we only have fond memories of Cafe Fiore. Now a year later for our anniversary we go back for dinner and Kristy remembers us. The food was just as good as we remembered it. It's one of the best restaurants in Ventura! Finding this gem was unexpected.....we were on our way to Lure Fish House (which is always excellent) turned around and went in.....the atmosphere is just the right amount of dark and cozy but natural. We sat in front of the kitchen....the chefs are like a Special Forces A-Team Precise and commanding......no move is wasted, complete professionals. Everything that came to the counter was taken away so quickly.....everything looked sooooo good it drove us crazy ! My friend and I went here last night for martinis and to listen to jazz music. While there wasn't any jazz music, the live music they did have was enjoyable. I only had the avocado martini (4 of them, lol) but it was DELICIOUS. We didn't order any food as we got there a little after 9:00pm and we had already eaten, but my friend ordered the "Torta Di Fragole" (strawberry shortcake) and it was very good too. I had a really great experience here! I picked this restaurant initially because they offered some live music on a Wednesday night! They had a little jazz group play with a singer, drummer, and keyboardist, which was really fun. I asked a friend for a recommendation for good Italian food for a romantic date night to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. My friend mentioned cafe fiore. So we gave it a shot. I'll make this short... The service sucked considering we were one of five or six tables in the entire restaurant. It took close to thirty minutes just to get our food. I ordered the risotto "special" and my girlfriend ordered the bolognese. The risotto was watery and bland beyond saving. It was so bad I couldn't even get through half of it. The bolognese was very generic with nothing special except the extra half a cup of salt they seasoned it with. 70$ later.... I feel cheated. Not even average. Just all hype and no follow through. The best thing of the experience was the martini. It helped numb the reality of how cheated and disappointed and embarrassed I feel for choosing this place to celebrate my girlfriends birthday. read more

Not. Good. I just went out to this place for our weekly date night and oh man.... have the standards dropped in this place. First of all the service is awkward, I am not sure if its the language barrier of the waiter or what happened there but just not a warming welcoming. Secondly, they forgot to bring our drinks and brought the most disgusting concoction I've ever tasted, mid-way into our meal of course. Nothing fancy, just a plain ol' sangria that tasted like 3 shots of vodka with a splash of wine. Either the mixologist needs a refresher/crash course or the owner needs to stop being so cheap with the ingredients. It's a shame since I recall the drinks being delicious 2.5 years ago (yeah, its been that long) Now, let's get to the food. Oh... boy... the food. Let's put it this way, if Gordon Ramsay came here for a Kitchen nightmares episode, he would have a field day. Starting with the extremely salty bread and marinara sauce they give us at first, which I can only explain with two theories: either the chef has smoked out his taste buds or this is a desperate cheap technique to make you drink more. In either case, its just very unpleasant. And guys, if you need people to consume more alcohol, just make better drinks. Is not that complicated. Moving on. For our main course, we decided to order the most basic dishes so we could gage adequately whether or not we would return for a more sophisticated dinner and let me tell you, we were absolutely disappointed. Spaghetti and meatballs is not that difficult to make, one would think. Most housewives are able to master this dish with exceptional taste. Well, seems apparently very complicated for this restaurant to make. We received well executed noodles with hard dry meatballs, covered with an overly tart, flavorless marinara sauce that costed us 18 dollars, which is approximately the cost of a high end restaurant in LA (benchmark Uovo or Bestia) and they really think the absolutely disgrace of a dish they serve is worth that. I wouldn't pay 5 dollars for that dish, in fact, they would have to pay me to eat that atrocity again. Anyways, the lobster bisque however was edible. No lobster was found in that dish, but what I did find was tons of flour to thicken the very thin layer of flavor it had to offer. read more

Lately this place has been on fire! I came for reggae Sunday and Derrick made some incredible drinks for our table. We raved about them for days. Then I came with my friend tonight and Kato served us more amazing drinks, while Edwin cleaned the bar tops in front of us (which is incredible, I never see anywhere do that during a busy shift). This review is specifically for Happy Hour as of recent (2017). Ok, so we had great memories of Cafe Fiore's Happy hour, specifically at the Tree House Lounge (in the back) with our favorite bartender Steve. Several months ago Steve left and it was never the same. It was very apparent that the restaurant promoted their bus boys, gave them minimal training and presented them as Bartenders. Needless to say, the quality of the drinks declined to the point where we had our doubts whether or not we wanted to come back regularly. So today we made our way back to the Tree House Lounge bar in the back for Happy Hour to find it closed. We proceeded to the hostess to inquire about the status of the lounge and she said it wasn't open on week days. This was disappointing as most Happy Hours take place during the week. However, we decided to sit at the main bar for drinks and possibly appetizers. My Girlfriend ordered a pomegranate martini which came out as simply pomegranate syrup and vodka, no garnishes, muddling, fresh ingredients... this was very disappointing compared to the quality we first experienced at Cafe Fiore months ago. I'm not sure if I would go back considering the recent changes in quality. With new and exciting places like Rumfish y Vino nearby, it makes it easier to tell the Uber driver where to drop you off. As far as I know, Dinner at Cafe Fiore is still amazing, but that will come in another review. read more

Party shuttle to Ventura woo-hoo!! That's right it's a 3-day bachelorette party weekend and I now present to you the crown jewel. 17 ladies dolled up in cocktail dresses, trooping through the restaurant, turning heads on our way back to our private dining room. Divine cocktails start coming our way fast and strong. Good thing they already had appetizers set up and ready for us when we arrived. The menu is mostly Italian fare, extensive and salivation-inducing. I ended up going with a seafood pasta dish to help line the ole stomach in prep for the night ahead. It was superb. The oohs and ahs could be heard in an orgasm echoing around the table as all the ladies savored the excellent vittles. Dinner concluded with a few chewable desserts ordered and several drinkable desserts ordered (ports and scotches for these classy ladies). Here's where this restaurant earns it's 5th star: More clicking and clacking of many heels as we traipse back through the restaurant and to the outside patio/club area. That's right, I said club. Damn, what a good idea! Open to the sky in the middle, the danceclub is airy and sexy. DJ was great, playing excellent dance music all night. We had rented two of the cabanas lining the dance-floor (including vodka bottle service), so we had places to put down our drinks (no drinks allowed on the dance floor) and the non-dancers could mingle. From dinner to dancing, the night was a blast. This place is a great one-stop date night, girls/guys night or bachelorette party night. Tip: Don't be freaked out by the live cover band that plays in the restaurant. That is not the club!!! read more

Slow. Slow slow. Sloooooowwww. We reserved space for a party of 15, and were seated in the outside portion at adjacent tables, rather than in a private room. It make conversation rather difficult, but we persevered. A few minutes after some of us sat down, our server introduced herself and said she'd be "taking care of us" that evening. Funnily enough, she proceeded to be absent for 85% of the night. We're pretty easy-going folks, but a simple dinner should NOT take 3 hours because of slow service. It took 45 minutes for some members of our party to get their drinks (water, glass of wine, soda). The food was fine. The burrata salad was fine, but the majority was just mixed greens. No amazing flavors. The martinis from the bar were tasty. We ended up receiving a discount on the tab, after a member of our party talked to the manager. The server had missed out on rounds of drinks, desserts, etc. After the discount was granted, the server popped by our table to say 'Hey, so you weren't satisfied with my service?' We had our wedding reception here in 2017 and frequent the restaurant often. Absolutely great service and food every time. They were ridiculously accommodating for our reception (and on short notice no less; thank you Kristy!) and even suggested some twists on their standard menu appetizers to fit our tastes; which turned out amazing btw, they should totally add the goat cheese artichoke bruschetta their menu. As for their everyday dining, the risotto tartufato is probably one of the best things to enter my face hole and the braised veal shank is just down right tasty. I'll dig until I get every last bit of bone marrow. Everything else is top notch as well from drinks, to appetizers, to the bread served with dinner. It was a random trip, so we didn't really have anything planned. The idea was to sightsee and then just check out some random place. We strolled up and down downtown Ventura, and peeped into every restaurant that was open. They all looked pretty dead, though. Surprisingly, when we passed Cafe Fiore, it looked pretty packed - so packed, in fact, that most of the tables on the outdoor patio were full despite the fact that it was freezing outside. Might as well check it out, right? It seemed the only happening spot in town anyway. Turns out, we made a pretty good choice. When we first walked in, the hostess was nice as ever. We wanted to check out the menu offerings before actually committing to eating there, and she was patient as ever. She was also really accommodating with our seating arrangement and gave us a variety of choices (even though the place was pretty packed). There was a bar right smack in front of the entrance, and lots of people were milling around drinking, snacking, watching sports on the few flat screens mounted here and there, and... amidst all that, there was a live jazz band off to one corner playing some really cool music. Families, couples, large groups, and even a huge dinner party filled up every corner of the place. Talk about a strange mishmash, right? We sat down at a cozy, intimate, candlelit table next to the wall of wines and browsed through the extensive menu. Turns out, both S and I were eyeing the same two items on the menu. We decided to just get both and share. The server was super prompt, bringing us waters, bread, and cold marinara sauce. The bread basket had slices of french bread and Italian bread. The French bread was much tastier and softer than the Italian... but WHO CARES when you get to dip the breads into the yummy marinara sauce? Oh, olive oil and vinegar, get out of the way! Bring on the cold marinara! YUM!!! It was also cool that they had an open kitchen. It was fun to watch the chefs whip up their creations right by our table. Our food came out fairly quickly, and as the two of us were super hungry, we dug right in. Chicken Spinach Ravioli - Both of us were kind of confused, as neither of us had ever tried chicken ravioli before. I must say, the chicken didn't add much to the dish, as all I really tasted was the spinach and the cheese. No matter. The plate was doused in olive oil, sprinkled with bright red tomatillos and spinach, and... in the center, a huge dollop of the BEST FRESH MOZZARELLA I'd had in a LONG while. Holy cow, that hunk of half melted cold cheese was SOOOOO good!!! Ribbon Pasta with Pesto - SO YUM! This dish was just a giant plate of thick ribbon pasta swimming in olive oil. Fresh pesto made the entire plate look green, which made it hard to identify the cuts of asparagus tossed in. Potatoes and pine nuts just added to this plate of deliciousness. Greasy? HELL YEAH. But good? HELLLLLLL YEAH. Sometime during our meal, the jazz band took a break or quit for the night or something... but the cool music was replaced by cliche Starbucks music (a la Norah Jones). It was okay, but I think both S and I would've preferred that the jazz band continue. Whatever. No biggie. The service was fairly prompt (even though we had a different server bring us different things every time, which I found sort of weird), the food was pretty damn good for the price (everything was under $20), the portions were huge, and the free bread and dipping sauce were BOMB DIGGITY! I guess if it a picture is worth a thousand words, and it lived up to that. We arrived at about 5:20 on Sunday evening (11/4). The hostess was friendly and provided us the option of sitting next to the chef's or at a high top table. We opted for the birds eye view of the kitchen. You would think with such seats, there would be now way a server could not wait on you?? After all, you are right next to the food they must pick up. After about 15 minutes, no one came by. No one acknowledged us. So, I did the only logical thing which was to ask the hostess to move us as we certainly were not getting service where we were. She obliged and allowed us to sit at one of the high top tables. Perfect! NOT!!! We sat in the section were there are only three tables. The other two tables already had patrons who were in varied stages of their dining experience. It took about 10 more minutes before our waitress waited on us. By this time we already knew what we wanted to eat. So, we started giving her our order when half way through she said,, "Oh! I guess I should write this down". Later our meals came and were absolutely fantastic!! We enjoyed it so much we were eager to try one of the many deserts. However, the waitress shocked us by coming to our table and saying "I guess you won't want desert, just the bill". It wasn't even a question. She made a statement. We were both dumb founded. I have never dinned at any establishment where they weren't happy to ask if you wanted deserts or even another drink. After all, it's more revenue for them. We did order our deserts. They too, were delicious but after the poor service and our waitress's attitude towards desert, we both had a sour taste in our mouth. Again, great food just really bad service!!!!!!! read more

Two words: Holy Crap. This has to rank as one of the top 5 most exceptional meals I've ever had. Cafe Fiore is sublime! It hits all the marks for cool ambiance (fireplace, live jazz, sexy decor and fun, mixed crowd of young and old hipsters), excellent service, impressive wine/cocktail list, and finally, a superbly varied menu of offerings for dinner. For appetizers we had the wonderful, crisp Caesar Salad (with real whole anchovies, the way it SHOULD be done, oo la la) and the Caprese salad. The Caprese had the most wonderful, smooth mozzarella slices, topped with a dollop of pesto, and paired with lemony olive oil and basil and arugula. (nice touch on the arugula, Cafe Fiore! a nice twist which worked very well). Servers kept the soft sourdough and foccacia (which appeared to baked on premises) flowing in the bread basket, accompanied by a fragrant and savory dipping oil with very finely diced herbs, tomatoes and olives. I ordered the Butternut Squash Risotto, and honestly...NEVER have had such smooth and heavenly puree tucked inside tender, homemade ravioli pillows. The pinch of nutmeg in the filling and the parmigiano sage cream sauce (somehow they managed to make a cream sauce light!) sent me to the moon. My companions blissed out on the Lobster Ravioli, whole wheat pasta with sun dried tomatoes and mozzarella, and the roasted lamb shank with gnocchi in a gorgonzola sauce. I normally don't care for gorgonzola, but Cafe Fiore has MASTERED the art of sauces, making them big on flavor on not to heavy-handed on cream and cheese. We chose a bottle of '07 Ruffino Riserva Chianti with dinner--it was light, very juicy and so drinkable with our meals. A perfect compliment! I had the rare urge to sip a port for dessert, so I ended up getting a fantastic 10 year port. Of course, I also had to dip into the desserts everyone else got. Dessert was practically an insane notion to me at that point after all the wonderful food, but how can you resist little chunks of deep-fried banana with a nutella/caramel dipping sauce or banana caramel crepes? The food was good, but that's the only nice thing I can say about this place. The hostess was rude, the server took forever to take our order and had nothing pleasant or kind to say. My glass of water was empty and sitting on the edge of the table waiting to be refilled and the guy literally checked every single person's water glass on the patio except mine. I had to go inside and ask for more water. I'd hate to think that this was the case, but I think it may have been racially motivated. The hip place to be on a Friday or Saturday night. This place has expanded since the first time visiting in Oct. 2007, with an extended outside patio/bar area. Great atmosphere inside. The bar is dark and woody. Off to the side is an area where a live band is set up with room for dancing in front of a fireplace and a couch and chairs/table close by for seating. Behind the bar is the restuarant section again with the dark tons that make it very inviting to sit for an hour or so. The outside patio is very nice, but even better is the new expansion of a bar and cabana type sectioned tables. If you aren't into the live band, walk on out to the live DJ and dance area and get your grove on. Drinks can be a bit pricey- two martinis for $18... hmm maybe that's the norm these days. I have mostly just been to Cafe Fiore for drinks, have yet to sit down and have a dinner.. So I will report back once I do. :) Cheers!! read more
