I recently visited Café La Maze and had one of the best dining experiences I've had in a long time -- and a huge part of that was because of our server, Jasmine. From the moment we sat down, she was incredibly attentive, friendly, and professional. What impressed me most was her ability to manage multiple tables effortlessly while still making every guest feel taken care of. Even during busy moments, she remained calm, positive, and on top of everything. It's rare to find someone who combines genuine hospitality with such strong work ethic and multitasking skills. Jasmine made the entire experience enjoyable and welcoming, and it's employees like her that keep customers coming back. Café La Maze is very unusual restaurant located in the unfashionable inductrial suburb of National City. The exit you should take from the 805 Freeway South is Plaza Boulevard. Then you will travel westbound about one mile. Next, you will turn left (south) down busy Highland Avenue (there is a Walmart store nearby) and thereafter you arrive at the restaurant, which will be on your left (the East side of the street). The flossy décor of the spacious dining room is deliciously retro. There are blavk and white portrtaits of Hollywood royalty lining the walls behind each red-leather-tufted booth. Many of these celebtrated individuals used to dine at Café La Maze on their way down from Beverly Hills to see the races in Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico. Beware of the New York Steak. It can be tough to the point of inability to cut it at all. The Filet Mignon may be the preferred option to avoid that issue. read more

Visiting San Diego for the weekend, we were craving a great steak and thought it would be fun to check out a local spot and splurge on a tomahawk for two at Cafe La Maze. Unfortunately, this turned into one of the most disappointing dining experiences we've had. We came in around 8 PM expecting a bit of a wait, but after an hour and a half, our food still hadn't arrived. By the time it finally came out--nearly 1 hour and 50 minutes after we sat down--we were already beyond frustrated. Then came the bigger issue: the steak itself. The tomahawk was completely overcooked, nowhere near what we ordered. To make things worse, it was served pre-sliced, and it honestly looked like part of the steak had been swapped out. We noticed the end piece of the tomahawk on the plate, but a few slices at the end of the steak were pink in a way that didn't match the rest--it was pretty obvious something wasn't right. Service didn't help the situation either. Our waitress seemed overwhelmed and frazzled the entire time, and we never really felt taken care of. The manager did try to make things right, which we appreciated, but at that point the experience had already gone downhill. Overall, we left disappointed and still hungry. For a meal we were genuinely excited about, this was a huge letdown. read more

They just started doing Buffet on 4/12/26. It is everyday 11-4PM with a couple options for beverages included. I believe the cost is $29.99 per person. I had to try it out. They had some wonderful beef ribs that were cooked until the meat was very tender and close to falling off the bone. There was a decent amount of meat on each bone and it was very satisfying. There was a green salad and a caesar salad option. Very tasty. A few pasta choices with a shell and green olive pasta. This one I liked very much. I love me some olives. The second dish as a fettuccine with zucchini and shrimp. These weren't large shrimp at all, they were about the size of a dime, the same kind you'd find in a shrimp cup o noodles. Corn on the Cobb, garlic mashed potatoes and a rice pilaf rounded out the buffet along with some sliced fruit and a few soup options. Service was excellent and the ambiance is slightly dark as usual in a steakhouse setting. I probably should give them more time to get things dialed in before coming back for the Buffet. From what I have seen the Beef Ribs were really the only protein choice, and even though they were delicious I thought they'd have chicken and or fish to try. A couple years ago I gave this Awesome Resturant a Negative review San Diego. I think it was around the time the restaurant had been sold to new Owners. I was extemly disappointed because this place used to be my Parents date night restaurant back in the 1970s to the 1990s. I recently went back to celebrate my Nephews safe return from deployment and was so surprised to find that my Prime Rib was cooked to perfection sooo tender!! That's how we ended up at Cafe La Maze. Cafe La maze still has that old school Hollywood glamour. The rich red leather gives off an intimacy of sharing a secret with the spirits that have inhabited this spot for the last 90 years. A cool darkness exudes the atmosphere like one of your favorite 70s movies. Frank Sinatra singing in the background while Marlene Dietrich stares seductively from a smoky black and white photograph. Roxanne, beautiful and gracious, was our server. Bekah and Kassie loved her, and that's amazing in itself. We started with drinks, the girls trying their delicious margaritas while I sipped on a coke, someone had to drive. The girls loved their drinks and shared one more before our dinner was over. I got the maze cut (16 oz.) of prime rib and it was delicious. I like mine medium rare and it was that. Like butter. The girls shared their Baby Back Ribs and neither could finish. This historical gem of a place has eluded me since my childhood. It became a personal mission to go there at least once in the recent years. A coupon caught my eye, so it became a priority for going to dinner. We got the Tomahawk Steak. I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised with presentation and servings size. Definitely can recommend this place for the food and Smoked Old Fashion. There was a nice selection of wines too. Live music played in the background. I loved the ambience and decor. It was like stepping back in time. Compliments to Roxanne for being the hostess and our server. We look forward to returning in the near future. read more

Giving this review is hard for me, this was the place my wife and I went on our first date, we have always loved it as one of our favorites. Here goes......We made reservations online for Valentine's Day. The surf and turf options here have always been a favorite, along with the live jazz music, and great cocktails. I'm not sure what the exact source of the problem on this busy night for restaurants was but it was a series of absolute failures. First, we waited in line for 30 minutes just to get to the hostess. People were really getting upset with the wait but we both understood the expectations of this holiday evening, especially at a place with a romantic vibe. We were seated, waiting 15 minutes for water. It was a Prix Frixe menu on the holiday evening. We were served a complimentary glass of champagne that came with the dinner. We ordered, and then we were given some bread and butter, the bread is always warm and fresh here. Almost an hour went by before our dinner arrived, they started serving free champagne because guests were starting to complain. I want to put it out there that we did not come late, our reservation was for 4:30 in the afternoon. Every table in the room was getting angry. People started getting their food finally, and within minutes, most tables sent to food back. Over/undercooked proteins was the biggest complaint. I got a bowl of clam chowder but noticed within a few minutes they were giving everyone small cups of chowder because they were running out. My soup was hardly even warm. Then came my ribeye and my wife's prime rib. I ordered my ribeye rare, she ordered a center cut prime rib. She got the end cut instead of the center cut, it was obliterated and well done. My ribeye was well done not rare as I ordered. I also ordered, as an extra, a lobster tail. My lobster tail was not edible. The lobster tail was chewy like beef jerky, dry, even crunchy in some places, I sent it back. We both ate our proteins because we felt so bad for the waitstaff, they were getting a tongue beating from almost every table. The manager asked me how our meal was while I was waiting on my wife in the ladies room, she probably wished she hadn't asked. I told the manager that my wife and I had been coming there since our first date there, about 8 years ago, maybe twice a year. I told her that I just spent $250 for one of the worst meals in a higher end restaurant of my life. She apologized. They over booked obviously, the kitchen staff failed on this night, and the poor servers had to put up with all the complaints. I would think better planning for one of the busiest nights of the year would be something the management may want to consider. I don't give bad reviews unless they are warranted, and it has to be pretty bad for me to do one like this one. What a delicious meal and gorgeous ambiance! You are transported back into the era of the Rat Pack!! Great Prime Rib and a savory pasta! Beautiful red leather booths with shiny chandeliers. I love the live music it really adds to the charm. Roxanna our server was so sweet and had great recommendations. We met the manager and she said there would be a speakeasy up stairs this summer! I cannot wait to check that out! New owners that are updating the whole place. Some new menu changes but I loved it all. The crème brûlée was yummy, a little thicker than normal but still good. My husband even loved the salad dressing! A large loaf of bread. I would have liked it served warm so that is my only tip. They have their own parking lot and I love the beautiful mural outside! So let me start by saying this was not a good first experience at Cafe La Maze. I received an email about Valentine's Day and my wife and I had been wanting to try the restaurant and were happy to be able to get a reservation (or so we thought). When we got there it was apparently a first come first serve line that went from the front to the back door. Some people that complained more loudly were seated sooner. We finally got seated after waiting in line for an hour (with a reservation). We were being told that they were trying to limit customer time to an hour but that no one was leaving. I believe this to be untrue as it took longer than an hour to get food, eat and get the check...reservations at 6:30 and got our check close to 10:00. Bartender Manny was great and handled the chaos with a smile on his face, not to mention he made a great Negroni. He ended up being our server for the evening. Food was good, but not great, my ribeye was medium inside but bottom side a little blackened. The up side to the evening was that a very nice couple in front of us were seated in a booth for 4 and invited us to be seated with them so we wouldn't have to wait longer. They wanted our first experience to be better than it started out as they have been long time patrons there. Had an awesome experience here. I always wondered about this place for the longest time. Went for lunch. Glad I tried it. Had the pasta mare but with their creamy garlic alfredo sauce. I special ordered it and they made it to my liking! So good! The service was as good also. Jasmine was very nice and very accommodating. She made sure everything is okay. The atmosphere and music at La Maze is great! It's heartwarming to see so many regulars and people dancing lively to the music. The service could use some improvement. Even with understaffing, I feel that the staff lacked proper training to handle a busy Saturday night. Staff should be trained to pass by their section tables to keep an eye out for drink refills and to take a second to check for food satisfaction. They were kind to bring out a complimentary platter of cake slices to compensate for the dining experience/service. Came here with our kid last night to get prime rib and listen to some live music. The place was reasonably busy, but seemed understaffed considering the speed of service. Upon entering the vibe was similar enough to the old Cafe La Maze. No one greeted us and we weren't sure where to go as the host stand was not near the entrance we came through. Eventually someone seated us. We were given water and bread, but no one came to take our order for about a half hour. After we ordered the food took another 40 minutes or so to come out. The bread was tasty and hot. The La Maze margarita was very large and a bit overly sweet for my taste, but ok. The French onion soup was a bit watery, but otherwise good and my kid enjoyed it a lot. My husband and I both got the 16 oz prime rib. He had requested medium rare and I asked for medium, but what we got were more like medium well and medium. The medium well was quite tough but the medium was better. They were out of baked potatoes so we had fries and mashed potatoes. The fries were fantastic and even cold they were fluffy inside and crispy outside. The mashed potatoes were heavy and a bit cold. My kid liked the carrots which were pretty good for a side and I liked the horseradish and jus though my husband thought the horseradish wasn't spicy enough. Overall, a somewhat underwhelming experience that took so long we didn't have time for dessert. We forgot to take our leftovers we packed up, but I guess I'm not overly disappointed considering how tough the meat was. 3 stars. read more

Two stars: Could've been better. I last visited Cafe La Maze maybe 6-7 years ago. I wanted to show off the place to my son and his wife, so drinks are on me! Walking up to the entry door, I noticed saxophone music penetrating the thick, heavy ornate entry door. Not a good sign. Sure enough, upon entry, the blaring music was jarring. The solo musician was far too overamped for such a small venue. Hoping he would go on a break soon, we seated ourselves at the curved end of the bar to facilitate conversation. We sat, we waited. The bartender was deeply involved with a clutch of other servers at the other end of the bar, the topic obviously being more important that waiting patrons at his bar or in the dining room. When salespersons or servers congregate like this, it is symptomatic of poor training and/or mismanagement. Finally, someone came over to take our drink order, and the drinks arrived efficiently. My La Maze Margarita was oversalted and undersized, but tasty nonetheless. While waiting for the loud entertainment to subside, I turned around and surveyed the dining room. I noticed a group of about 10 or 12 adults at a table nearest the singer/sax player. They were not conversing at all, just eating and looking straight ahead. The music was way too loud for polite conversation. The crystal chandelier lighting was far brighter than I recall. The extra wattage managed to change it from 'mood lighting' to simply 'lighting'. Too bad. Finally, the loud music ceased and we were able to converse in normal tones. That is, until the musician came over and annoyed all three of us by forcing his oversize business card on each one of us, one by one. Assuming that after he was done annoying the other two bar patrons, he would likely resume his overamped performance, I vigorously signaled the bartender for my tab. Yes, he was still holding court or discussing very urgent issues with several other servers at the far end of the bar. He eventually noticed my hand-waving and provided me with a bill. In retrospect, we were there on a Saturday evening during prime time for fine dining restaurants. But there were numerous empty tables, and only five bar patrons during my visit. It's a bit regretful that when things are changed, it's not always for the better. read more

I would have to say we are devout, generational family customers of Cafe La Maze. I have a HUGE San Diego native family. Café La Maze has been a treasured jewel of national city. My great grandparents, grandparents, mother, my children, my children's children all patron Café La Maze. We were all very concerned with the sale of the restaurant. I hoped that none of its vintage charm, welcoming spirit, and of course amazing food would not be changed. I have to be honest that I went back-and-forth with four stars versus five stars and let me tell you why. I had a party of 7 with a reservation on Mother's Day 2025. Im all about an incredible restaurant experience because for me it's just that ...an experience. We walk into the restaurant and a few changes have been made. They removed the sound wall in the entry of the restaurant. Which really opens up all of the restaurant however it does make it much louder in there. They had live music in the lounge. In my opinion it was the wrong genre of music, what I love about the restaurant is its old Vegas charm. I would've loved to have music to reflect that. Some Sinatra or Jazz. We checked in with our very friendly hostess and sat at the bar waiting for our table. I do want to reiterate it was Mother's Day and it was very crowded. We waited a long time before somebody was even behind the bar, but once he was there, he was fantastic. Seriously his cocktails were art! I hate waiting for my drinks. We were sat in the back room which has been redone and has had a much needed facelift. The waitress was friendly, but again it came down to us waiting and waiting. I guess our dissatisfaction must've been painted all over our face because the owner came over to our table and she was wonderful. Such a beautiful woman and incredible hostess. She stood at our table and talked with us for a while, which took our mind off of waiting. With that being said, I have no problem at all paying for incredible food and exceptional service. My bill for Mother's Day dinner was about 850.00 Keep in mind we added lobster tails to all of our meals we had several cocktails and several appetizers and dinner entrees. So the value for what we had was right on!!! However, there was a few mix ups and missing items with our order, but in the end they were resolved. Unfortunately, that created more waiting. The food was ah Mazing! I was disappointed that it was a prefix meal and I was not made aware of that. Some where during our meal a belly dancer showed up at our table, giving us a little extra entertainment. She was very friendly. I do have to mention with the music selection and the belly dancer it may have caused a bit of identity crisis for the restaurant. What I loved about Cafe La Maze previously was I knew exactly what I was getting... Vintage Vegas steakhouse. The cherry on the sundae was an incredible cobbler with ice cream at the end of our meal. I would have given five star plus if it wasn't for the waiting and service issues. Was it due to the holiday? Was it due to them being new? Was it due to a new green staff? I'll never know although I'm going to trust that it was just due to the holiday. I can for sure say I'm going to give it one more try and have confidence that it will be better. If you've ever wanted to hit up an old school steakhouse and avoid paying new school prices, this is the place for you. It's a nice and dark place, not too fancy, and the food is absolutely worth the price. The reason why almost anyone will walk into this National City favorite is beef, and they've got good quality beef, seasoned well, and cooked to order. I've had the prime rib, steaks of different cuts, their beef rib bones, and their French onion soup. They're all good choices worth repeating. The first thing you're going to get from very attentive waitresses is your bread. There are a couple of loaves, one dark and one white. Made reservations for cafe La maze for Valentine's Day , not sure if it was over booked but we stood in a line for another 45 mins when we arrived at the front there was no hostess we weren't seated for another 5 minutes, finally we were greeted by our server Jasmine which was funny because our names are similar she sat us in a red booth ,we started off with some strawberry margaritas which was FIRE. I ordered a salmon with mash potatoes and a soup, my husband had the ribeye mashed potatoes from a pre fix menu, the soup and salad came out but food did take over an hour to come out. Which we didn't really feel the wait since then margaritas just kept comin;) we got home and ate our chocolate covered strawberries which were delicious. Came for my in laws 34th wedding anniversary. They came here for their Rehersal dinner so it was so special. This was their first time being here with the new owners and we loved it. They had the tomahawk on special for $100 it was such a great deal. The Brussel stouts were amazing! I had the salmon it was light and fresh. We all loved our baked potatoes, soups and salads! My brother and sister in law split the chicken alfredo and thought it was great. The prime rib was also juicy and flavorful! They had live music that added to the vibe. I rarely leave negative reviews, but this experience was too disappointing not to share. It took about 15 minutes just for someone to take our order, and then over an hour (1 hour 15 minutes) for our appetizer to arrive--only to find out it had been sent to the wrong table. To their credit, they offered a complimentary glass of wine as an apology, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, things only went downhill from there. Our main entrée--a $150 tomahawk steak--didn't arrive until nearly 1 hour and 50 minutes after we ordered. When it finally came out, it looked incredible and seemed like a great value. But the moment we cut into it, we realized it was completely raw and actually cold in the center, like it had just come out of the refrigerator. We had ordered it medium, and this was nowhere close. We let the owner know (we're really not the type to complain, but it was inedible), and she apologized and spoke with the chef. About 25 minutes later, a replacement steak came out--but it was noticeably smaller, and oddly, the bone from the original tomahawk had been placed next to it. The quality was even worse. The outside was over-charred, while the inside was pale and white, almost like a pork chop. It was extremely tough--honestly difficult to even cut through. At that point, we were out of time due to childcare and had completely lost our appetite. We asked for a box just to leave. The owner offered $50 off, which we appreciated, but it didn't make up for the experience. I ended up regretting even taking the food home--it was not edible even after trying to reheat it. It's a real shame because the atmosphere was great, the live music was enjoyable, and both the bartender and owner were kind. But the food quality, service timing, and overall handling of the situation need serious improvement. I wouldn't return. $147 for appetizer lamp chops, one glass of wine, and the inedible steak. Went today for breakfast it was terrific the food was cooked to perfection everything was very yummy we decided to try the buffet that is new and it was great price was very good for all the food that was there I definitely recommend the service was excellent as well I would eat here again! read more
