This review is long overdue! I'm a big fan of Cafe Mei and would definitely consider it one of the best Taiwanese spots for breakfast. It's a small space with limited seating, but the restaurant is always clean, tidy, and well-stocked. Orders can be placed to go by phone or online, and there's also a convenient kiosk by the entrance for ordering in person. The staff are always so friendly and polite, no matter who is working. The service is very consistent, which I really appreciate. The food and drinks are comforting, delicious, and fulfilling--everything just hits home. My favorites are definitely the crepes, sandwiches, and soy milk. I've ordered from Cafe Mei for both breakfast and lunch, and I've always enjoyed my meals. cafe mei is a little TOO nostalgic. like way too nostalgic. nostalgic in a "i could probably make this without needing to call my mom for the recipe" way. in other words, you probably are getting ripped off! one star off for that, but i'd rather go broke laughing than get rich crying. none of the food will make you cry here unless you're a really picky chicken nugget eater! service by kiosk, everyone was nice. format is like traditional taiwanese breakfast stalls - eating out of takeout boxes in the restaurant. black pepper noodles were not that bad! pepper wasn't overpowering. not a lot of meat but oh well. i wish they were more texturally interesting. mmm maybe some cukes or something toasted ham and egg sandwich was good! sweet crispy savory with lots of different textures. there wasn't much filling but its supposed to be a lighter sandwich overall uhh worth a trip down memory lane i guess. wow i love taiwan! yay! read more

As someone who absolutely loves Taiwanese breakfast, Cafe Mei is one of my favorite spots in the Bay Area. In fact, it's the only dedicated Taiwanese breakfast place I know of around here! My family and I got there a little before they opened at 8am and were the second group in line. Within 10 minutes of opening, the place was packed. There was a steady stream of takeout and pickup orders too, so it's clearly a popular spot. We ordered pretty much all the classics: sandwiches, soy milk, dan bing (Taiwanese egg pancake), and radish cake. My favorite was the radish cake--it was incredibly soft and had a great texture. My husband's favorite was the sandwiches, and my dad couldn't stop talking about the dan bing. Honestly, everyone loved the sandwiches. The only downside is the price. The sandwiches are around $7 each, which feels pretty expensive for their size. Maybe I'm spoiled because we've had these exact breakfast foods in Taiwan, where a sandwich cost around $1 USD. Seeing $7 plus tax and tip definitely made me laugh (and cry a little) . That said, I also understand we're in the Bay Area and there really aren't many places serving authentic Taiwanese breakfast. Even with the higher prices, we've already ordered from here multiple times and will definitely keep coming back. The food hits the spot whenever I'm craving a taste of Taiwan. P.S. I mean the sandwich place is alright. My mom and I aren't hungry anyways. We were just looking for lighter meals, not something that's going to fill me up the rest of the day. When we arrived, there were many people. We didn't know how to start but as usual, we were asked to go to kiosk and order there. Thankfully, we're able to find a seat. Also, they should work in the interior more because it kinda looks dark and empty. Food is alright honestly. They look like something you can simply make at home especially how expensive the food is. I'd say that drinks are slightly better than the food. Would be better if they add more meat or make the sandwich a bit larger, but of course that they'll have to increase prices there. I have had this in my bookmarks for a long time never had a chance to go because the hours don't work for me. Finally I had a day off in the weekday so I got to go! This is in Auto mall, I always wonder what it is because it was always close when I was in the area. Plenty of parking. The inside is pretty big with plenty of seats. It is a sight to see all of the aunties making the sandwiches and other food in their little stations. It also seemed like there was an area for grab and go sandwiches but I am not completely sure. They had a little kiosk to order. I have a confession to make, I am not big on sandwiches. I know, sacrilegious. But these sandwiches are different. This Taiwanese cafe is located in a plaza full of other shops and restaurants so there are definitely a lot of choices, but if you're looking for something light and convenient, definitely check out Cafe Mei. Stopped by here for food after being in Fremont for some tasks. I was craving Taiwanese breakfast and loved how conveniently located this place is! I think the flavors are a perfect combination and are sandwiched wonderfully between the soft white bread! I sometimes struggle with eating a full sandwich, but I ate every bite of this one because it was so good I couldn't stop until I was all out. Classic Taiwanese breakfast! There aren't many places that serve these in the states, so I'm thankful this place is open. The Egg Crepe with Corn, Tuna, and Bacon is snack sized. It's already cut into slices, so it's easier to eat. Every bite had all the fillings + green onions. Never had this combination of fillings before and it was a fun experience. It was lightly salted that paired well with the stronger flavors in the dipping sauce, which was garlicky, sweet, and tangy. Toasted Signature Pork Sandwich - 3 layers of fillings between 4 slices of bread. It had pork, ham, egg, cucumber, tomato, onion, and mayo. The meats are savory and juicy, especially the pork patty. The veggies are so fresh and the mayo brings everything together. The bread is well toasted, not soggy at all, and held all the fillings firmly. All crusts are cut off and the entire sandwich is cut in half for easier eating too - much appreciated. The breakfast items were not too heavy, but still filling. The Black Pepper Noodle with Egg is teppan style, which reminds me of the night markets with hot sizzling metal plates. It has minced pork, mushrooms, caramelized onions, garlic, and black pepper sauce. The mouth-watering sauce is so savory and fragrant. Lots of black pepper, can really taste and see it. I love how saucy this dish is and the noodles really soaked up the flavor well. Definitely get the extra fried egg on top, it's part of the classic experience. HUGE portion size, ended up splitting it into 3 meals (no complaints here!). Iced Milk Tea. I got the larger size 20oz/700cc (smaller size is 16oz/500cc). You can also make additional customizations for the sugar and ice levels. Mines was 50% sugar, no ice. Perfect amount of sweetness to me where you can still taste the tea more. We were in town to check out Cal, my husband's alma mater, and actually take a tour around the campus. My husband found a Taiwanese breakfast joint to check out. We happily went. The place is in a nice big shopping center with plenty of parking. The parking lot was pretty packed by the time we went. There were already several people there when we got to the entrance. The place was packed. We ordered several things like their dan bing (egg crepe), soy milk, etc. The food was good but the table was little too small for all the things we ordered. The place was so packed tightly like a sardine can. I understand this is probably the only Taiwanese place around but I could barely get around the actual restaurant. We were seated by the window but I had to get out of my seat and weave myself through any spot just to get the plastic utensils all the way across the restaurant. That's not a good feeling. There were also a lot of people standing around waiting for their to-go orders as well, complicating the maximum capacity of the place. The lady checking people in told us the place was better than the places in Taiwan. This is Taiwanese breakfast. You can't beat the originals in the home country. My entire family was just in Taiwan as well. Not a great selling point. Just say, instead, the food tastes just like what you would find in Taiwan. Trying to oversell the place when the environment doesn't feel inviting. I'm happy Taiwanese food is reaching a wider audience and there's practically no other Taiwanese breakfast around with the amount of people waiting to eat there. We stumbled upon this breakfast spot on a whim when another cafe nearby we wanted to have a girls' brunch didn't have any seating. It was quite crowded when we arrived around noon but managed to snag a seat in the back! With four of us, it was really snug and close but we were just happy to find seating to eat. I am always a fan of finding Taiwanese food spots as a nod to my ancestry and nothing like Taiwanese breakfast foods to bring you back to childhood memories of visiting the motherland. The pork sung crepe was authentic and truly delicious and the hot soy milk was fine (it was just average but can't expect Fu Hang level soy milk outside of Taiwan!) Only gripe would be how crowded it is with seating inside, it really felt like we were shoulder to shoulder with other customers. They have simple menu unlike other Asian ethnic restaurants that tried to serve everything yet screwed everything, they are just focusing on one thing, delivering traditional Taiwanese breakfast experience here. Cafe Mei is quite famous -- it's a recognizable name and was on Taiwan news shortly after it opened, and my relatives in SoCal asked me about it knowing I live in the Bay Area! I had already had Cafe Mei a few times (so delicious) and didn't think my relatives would be interested but was excited to hear otherwise! So I picked up several to-go sandwiches for them on a trip down and kept the sandwiches with ice in a cooler and they were still in perfect condition after the ~7 hour drive. There's no other place that's able to encompass / execute the exact flavors of Taiwanese sandwiches. Count me impressed if my relatives from Taiwan said so, hah. My favorite sandwiches are their signature and special to-go sandwiches and the toasted sandwich. These are all cravable, even from out of town. I also like their daikon cake (although on the "soggier" side, the flavors are on the mark, which is hard to find in the Bay Area), the egg wraps (no need for the extra fillings like tuna, etc. imo, stick with the classic), and their corn soup (very homey feeling.) Their milk tea is also very classic and reasonably priced. Their food, however, is overall a bit pricier but very typically Bay Area priced. I've always ordered online for pick up. Particularly when it's less busy, workers will kindly greet you from the back. Otherwise, just grab your items yourself on the shelf and make sure you also grab napkins/chopsticks/etc. on the opposite wall. Typically pretty bustling inside. One of the workers told me they're closed and tried shooing me away but the lady in the kitchen said it was okay and after she made my sandwich she reassured me (i was very apologetic) & emphasized customer satisfaction is important. This place was absolutely popping on a Sunday! We went in around 11AM and there were two lines - one to sit down and another to order from a kiosk. The Kiosk line was really busy so we ended up moving over to a person when she came by the podium. We were ordering to go - one house special to go sandwich, two soy milks, one pork hamburger, taiwanese style egg and scallion crepe, and radish with egg. I would recommend no egg with the radish cake because its literally just a fried egg thrown on top of the radish cake. I also wish it was crispier - but other than that it was hot and fresh and tasty. Sandwich was mid, love them way more from taiwan but the bread was nice and bouncy and soft, just didnt have much flavor in the ham or the cucumer. Crepe was delightful and really filling, would order again. Husband loved the pork burger - it really reminded us of eating in Taiwan so it was pretty tasty. Soy milk very rich and creamy! Overall? Food was great for what you expected for Taiwanese breakfast food. The interior is slightly cluttered and there is little room to move around. Someone of the chairs and tables feels flimsy, which can be a little nerve-racking if you're trying to slide your chair and legs around a table of food. There is underutilized space in the dining area that is taken up by unused decor. Additionally, their order kiosk is in a spot that makes it easy for last minute stragglers to cut in line, so keep a vigilant eye on your spot in line during the particularly busy days you come visit. The staff is friendly and kind. However, during rush hour, I can tell they often get flustered and disorganized. During a specific day, I came with a friend, who ordered on the kiosk after I did. He ordered a black pepper teppan noodles, and I ordered a sandwich. I ended up getting my food 15 minutes after he did, and that was after I had approached the counter to ask about my order and stuck around to make sure they actually fulfilled my order. From what I saw, on really busy days, the order tickets prints as one continuous receipt, so when it gets busy, the orders are randomly ripped off the sheet and arbitrarily fulfilled. On those days, the orders being fulfilled are not in numerical order. Food wise, I think their food is quite tasty. It's simple and straightforward. I ordered the Toasted Signature Pork Sandwich and a Corn Chowder. The flavors are as expected, and my meal didn't feel too heavy for a breakfast. The soup pairs well with their sandwiches, so I recommend that combination for anyone's first time! If this is your first time going to Cafe Mei, and it's a sunny day outside, it can be pretty nice to eat outside instead of having to snag a table inside. It wasn't busy at all so it was fairly easy to put in our order then take a seat. When your order is ready, they will call you up to the counter to get it. My friend and I decided to share: Taro/Pork Sung Sandwich - this was delicious. It was a great blend of savory with a hint of sweet. It was also a great blend of textures. Definitely recommend. Toasted Signature Pork Sandwich - this was like any other sandwich to be honest. There wasn't anything particularly special per say but it was solid. Radish Cake - comes with a garlic sauce. Solid, good texture, and good flavor. Soy Milk - you can adjust the sweetness for this but keep in mind that their sweetness levels are not the same as a boba shop. TAIWAN'S ICONIC !~ i'm so jealous it's in fremont, i'm a sj resident. I absolutely love this limited seating cafe, its ambiance, and their DELICIOUS comforting food! the staff work very efficiently and are kind, welcoming people! i love that this cafe welcomes everyone with open arms and doesn't fail to satisfy. you can also order online for pick up or use self ordering kiosk. i've tried a few of their sandwiches; Togo Sig. Sandwich, Togo House Special, Togo Pork Sung, Togo Ham and Cheese, Toasted Ham and Egg Sandwich, and Toasted Pork Sung Sandwich. ALL are amazing! I highly recommend to try out the whole menu, seriously lol. I definitely will be visiting often and can't wait to try their popular crepes, burgers, black pepper noodle and more! read more
