The bread they used for the banh mi was soft and fresh. Overall, meal and drink tasted really good!!! It's awesome to have such a legit yummy place inside of a grocery store, but also dangerous because I'll be grabbing this instead of groceries! Black coffee with salted foam: The coffee is very fragrant and just the right amount of boldness/roast for me. The salted cream is also light and seasoned perfectly--though I will say that I got some clumps of cream so maybe it could be mixed a little better, but I didn't mind it too much. It's not a large drink, especially when you factor in ice, and it's also really tasty so be careful not to finish it too quickly! Banh mi (#1 and #2): They don't stuff the banh mi until it's exploding with meat, but I feel like it has a good ratio of everything. There's enough meat with every bite, there's tons of pickled veggies and a very nice smear of pate. I personally think the mayo is a little thick, especially considering that it has pate, but I didn't hate it. Cay Café in Fremont has been one of our favorites since the day they first opened, and they've been consistently amazing ever since. The barbecue pork bánh mì is absolutely delicious--tender, flavorful pork marinated in a perfect balance of sweet and savory, all tucked into freshly made, soft-yet-crispy bread. You can really taste the freshness, and knowing they make their own barbecue pork makes it even better. We've also tried the crunchy pork bánh mì, and that one is just as tasty, especially with the crispy skin adding great texture. Honestly, what's not to like? Their drinks are just as impressive. The Viet phin-dripped coffee with house condensed milk is rich and satisfying. I always get a classic cold cut combination so I ordered their #1 with extra pate, which was an additional $2. The total came out to be close to $12 which is actually more expensive than Huong Lan. It was ready roughly 15 minutes after ordering from the kiosk. Let's cut to the chase -- the banh mi was disappointing. The meats were not only very thin, but more specifically, the red pork belly roll had a weird taste to it that I couldn't really get over. I originally came here because of an Instagram Reel about Cay Cafe's Mochiko coffee. What I didn't expect was to have an hour and a half conversation about the cafe with the owner! (His name is Long.) TL;DR: Come here if you want to have a drink and eat food that's made with 100% real ingredients with no preservatives and tastes fresh. This stuff is made by people who care so much that they've traveled directly to their sources so they can control what they're getting. PHILOSOPHY: Long and his wife wanted to make sure that people get the best food with the least amount of preservatives and using ONLY WHOLE INGREDIENTS. They've gone DEEP into figuring out how to make the best version of their food without any added chemicals. DRINK: The Mochiko Coffee was like a Philz Mint Mojito Coffee but with a Vietnamese spin. The salted cream was exactly as advertised. We added the matcha cream and was very pleasantly surprised that the cream was VERY matcha forward. DRINK BACKGROUND: From talking to Long, his family goes to Vietnam to talk to the farmers and SOURCE THE BEANS for their coffee. They are NOT just scooping out some Cafe Du Monde canned coffee! Similar for their matcha, he travels to Japan to actually meet the matcha producers. He told us that since there's a matcha shortage, he ACTUALLY NEEDS TO SHOW the match producers the final product so they can approve the sale of the matcha. CRUNCHY PORK BANH MI: The Crunchy Pork Banh Mi is one of the top 3 banh mi's I've ever had in my life. I'm not a big Yelp reviewer, but I do eat a lot of banh mi's. Most people swear by Duc Huong but Cay Cafe's banh mi is different. BREAD: Assuming you eat this sandwich fresh, right as you order it: the bread is freshly toasted so it'll be perfectly crispy on the outside and so soft on the inside that you will think that there isn't much bread. However, what it's doing is actually sucking in the juices and mayonnaise of the sandwich. BREAD BACKGROUND: Cay Cafe's bread is made fresh every day and you can tell. Heck, Long's business partner actually went to Paris to learn how to bake their bread! I asked Long if I could buy a banh mi for the following day. He gave me instructions on how to heat it up, but you can tell he hesitated because the bread's best expression is the day it was made. The bread itself has zero preservatives and Long doesn't recommend eating it beyond 1 day old because it just won't be that good. I've never met someone who cares so much about how we eat their bread. CRUNCHY PORK: Their Crunchy Pork is amazing. It's not a tough hard skin that you can get at other places. The flavor is just right, it's not super salty, they cut it at the right size for biting. You can feel the crisp skin through every bite and it never goes soft or rubbery, it stays crispy through the whole sandwich. CRUNCHY PORK BACKGROUND: Long sources all of their pork belly from a local butcher and when they crisp the skin, they don't artificially induce the crispiness by adding sugar. All of the crispiness comes from how they cook it, which is very much in line with how home cooks would do a crispy pork belly. CARROTS, DAIKON, VEGGIES They do an excellent job of pickling. It hits the right balance of fresh, crunchy and not too sweet or sour. PRICE: Look y'all, it's a little higher for a banh mi. But personally, I'd rather pay a little more for all the love, care and real food that is coming my way. DID YOU KNOW? In short, the prices can be shocking, the service top notch, and food quality goodness. Plenty of seating inside shared by all the places inside. Parking on the otherhand can be a bit tricky. Although they have a dedicated area for parking for the plaza, it can be pretty full. You may need to park further and walk over but I haven't had too much trouble finding something relatively close. I N S I D E As I said, it's in the food court. It's spacious and pretty clean. There's a kiosk to order but they also have someone there in person to also take orders. I don't recall how I ordered when I went but I ordered the combination banh mi, Lemon grass beef roll, and egg coffee. From what I recall, I enjoyed all the food. Lovely layer of flavors in the banh mi, veggies crisp. The beef roll with a lovely lemongrass flavor so if you do not like lemongrass...do not get it. The egg coffee was strong and delicious. Inside the ranch 99 food court, finally a good banh mi place! When it comes to banh mi, I almost always get the cold cut combo, and the key to a good classic cold cut combo is the quality of the pate. The pate here is really good, and different than most of the other places, is really good and creamy. They also toast the bread for you, which makes a big diff vs having cold bread, especially during the winter! Place is clean, the owner is attentive, definitely will be part of my friday night rotation when I am waiting for AOPS class to finish, lol. read more

Came here twice since their soft opening. Owner Long was friendly and helpful in recommending Banh Mi options from their menu. I decided to go for the Banh Mi Pho Dip and Vietnamese Egg Coffee before the grand opening. The dip was a pho broth made from scratch with some spice and oh boy, each bite made me want more. The egg coffee was strong, but there was too much ice and less egg cream foam in a regular cup. I should request less ice the next time I order. I came back again to try their Nem Nuong and Combination Cold Cut that Long recommended on my first visit. Since I ordered it through the touch screen, I forgot to add a note to cut in half on the Bahn Mi, which I recommend if you can't finish it all in one sitting. The Nem Nuong was so good and crispy, it went well with the matching sauce. Even the combination cold cut had flavor with the right amount of topping and crispy baguette. Very friendly and fast service. There's lots of spacious seating available in the food hall, but I prefer to takeout more. Sadly , I didn't realize until I was back in San Jose that the pork sand was beef .(I cannot eat beef) That was a bit disappointing. They have 13 counter space and the rest of the food court can uold another 100, so lots of space. They are slow, but worth it. This is a staple for me and my boyfriend! My boyfriend absolutely loves this place, he comes at least twice a week. He always gets the nem nuong and cold cut banh mi. Even though it is pricey (what isn't in the bay) it definitely is worth the price. You can tell everything here is made fresh and by hand. The nem nuong sauce tastes like a mother makes it! Super fresh I always get the egg coffee here which is amazing, but today I wanted to try the matcha. Let me tell you, they use good quality matcha here. 1 month update. :) Cay Cafe is still as excellent as can be! Long (the owner) is still so friendly, welcoming, and kind to everyone he speaks to. He recognized me when I returned two times after the first and took time to engage in conversation with me while managing all the orders and providing the best customer care. I came in recently for a matcha latte because they use some of the highest quality matcha powder and it's my kind of pick-me-up on a weekend. Long shared that he's sharing some homemade gelatin to share more Vietnamese culture. He shared that the gelatin is eaten with coffee/tea and can be eaten as a palette cleanser too. He also shared the significance behind why it was shaped in a cat paw. I saw him explain this story to each customer who ordered a drink. I so appreciate his enthusiasm, passion, and pride in sharing his story and culture with those around him. The gelatin was delicious and was creamy and a great palette cleanser after my delicious matcha latte! Okay, I'm back with a coffee review. If you're looking for authentic Vietnamese coffee, this is your stop. Whether you get the classic phin coffee or want something a little extra like egg or ube, you're going to get sip after sip of everything that Vietnamese coffee should be -- robust coffee flavors complemented with sweetness. The condensed milk and flavors here don't overtake the coffee, and the coffee never leaves a bitter taste in your mouth. Not to mention this stuff is strong AF and will wake you up and keep you awake. If you're not into coffee, they also serve matcha and smoothies. Haven't tried the smoothies, but the matcha is equally as delicious as the coffees. I especially appreciate how the folks here take pride in how they craft their drinks and food. They really want their customers to have a pleasant experience while staying true to their roots and sharing their culture with us. I had the Meatball Banh Mi, Nem Nuong Spring Roll, Grilled Pork Spring Roll and grilled Beef Spring Roll. Also tried the Mango Matcha Latte and Mango Smoothie. Meatball Banh Mi was very good. Good ratio of meat, veggies and bread. Price was reasonable for the size. The bread had a toasty crispy crust and soft inside. The bread halves were thinner so it was not too bready nor chewy. The meatball was really tasty; can taste the salty soy flavor and sweetness from tomato. Topped with pickled carrots and radish, fresh cucumber, and cilantro. Has sweet creamy dressing which could have been mayo. One of the best banh mi I've had. The best of the spring rolls were the grilled pork and Nem Nuong. Grilled pork had some sweetness and definitely lemongrass flavor. The combination of their marinade was so balanced that not one spice overpowered another. Good meat, veg and noodles ratio, too. Same goes for the Nem Nuong with generous portions of pork sausage, fresh veggies and a crispy fried rolled wrapped for the crunch. Beef had the same ingredients as grilled pork, was good but not as flavorful as the other two spring rolls. Good mango smoothies. Not overly sweet. Mango Matcha Latte was pretty good too. Matcha was not bitter at all and balances the mango flavor. Staff were really friendly and nice. They're ready to help and greet everyone pleasantly. Randomly came across this place while doing some grocery shopping at 99 ranch. I am a huge fan of nem nướng cuon so I'm always trying to find the best spots and this place isn't too shabby. Nice texture and flavor, the sauce is a bit different for me and I can't quite put my tongue on what is missing or needs more of but still 4.5/5 Also had to try their banh mi because again trying to always find the best and it did not disappoint. The bread was warm and crunchy on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. Ordered two Shrimp Spring Rolls from this place: one with pork and one without. The owner was available to answer questions about substitutions and what sauce is most appropriate. When ordering via kiosk, I was given the choice of peanut or house sauce, and the owner explained that the choices were available for all items and the amount of choices could not be customized for one item.
