The Bún and Drunken Noodles were very tasty, but the service left a bit to be desired. Is it seat yourself or wait to be seated? Also, I've never been to a restaurant and not gotten a check, but that seems to be the practice here; when you're finished you just go to the cashier to be given your total. If that is how they operate, great....I just would have liked to have been told in advance, "When you're done, just come up to be checked out," instead of sitting there feeling like we were being ignored. Tried this restaurant last night. The server was less than friendly, but the spring roll and pho came out pretty good. Took a pad thai to-go to eat for lunch today and it was hands down the worst pad Thai I've ever had. Tasted like absolutely nothing. I have gone here several times. My experience with the food has gone from a C+ to a F. The service was great, though. The last time, I got pad Thai which came out very bland, utterly awful. I took it home to doctor it up, so I could eat it. The food is NOT authentically Thai. I have no idea who is doing the cooking in the kitchen, but they all need training. 5 Stars because this is as good as it gets in Blacksburg. I live in Northern VA and my house is within 10 minutes of several pho places. Although Mekong is more expensive than what I am used to and doesn't offer different pho options (I usually choose ones that have just steak meat) - I still give the place 5 stars. It's a large portion for $10 and the service is phenomenal. They are always pretty attentive, fulfill special requests, and check back often. My favorite employee is the older Chinese gentleman (I think his name is Ray?) who serves customers. He is awesome and extremely helpful. read more

This is the best Thai/Vietnamese food within at least two hundred miles. The pork dishes are addictive and the curries and pho can be as spicy as you want them to be. It's often crowded, but the service is good so things stay manageable. The same people own the grocery next door, and many of the ingredients come from their network of local suppliers. read more

This place was definitely going down hill and I don't know if it got better. I haven't been here for more than six months and before that I was a regular. Why? Because their service and attitude made me sick. Yes! Made me SICK. One time my boyfriend ordered pho and he was waiting there for half an hour and everyone who came after us got their phos. So we were being nice and patient, and asked our server politely about our food, and my boyfriend finally got the pho when my dish was pretty cold because I was waiting for him to eat together. After the unpleasant experience, I still gave it another try only because I was a regular and I used to love this place. And it turned out to be the worst experience, ever! Still two of us, went there for dinner, we ordered phos and started waiting. There were two or three groups of people came in after us. After ten, fifteen minutes, they got their food. Twenty minutes, the other group got their food. I was sure they ALL came after us. So I asked the waiter where our food is?!! He said he will check for us, he went to the kitchen and came back telling us to wait for a bit more. However, after another ten minutes, our food was still not served, so I asked another girl, she went to ask the Asian guy who seems to be in charge and I heard him saying to her: tell them to wait. Okay, okay. No explanation or apology or anything. We were angry. So we stood up and left. Sorry, Cafe Mekong. I was too angry to stay inside. And I will never return. read more

It's nothing compared to authentic Vietnamese and Thai food from other places but this is the best you're going to get in Blacksburg.

Being Asian, Cafe MeKong is just a-ok restaurant. But being Asian in Blacksburg and craving for some pho, it's the place to go to. After all, it IS the only place in Blacksburg with pho. I've tried their curry, singapore noodle, Thai fried rice, pho, drunken noodle, Szechuan noodle, coconut juice, Vietnamese coffee, and Thai iced tea. I think Cafe MeKong is best at their noodle dishes. Their curry was..eh. Thai fried rice is okay.. I think it's too moist to be fried rice. Their pad thai was just okay, it was too dry. I would recommend the beef pho, drunken noodle with beef and Szechuan noodle. I think they are pretty good at making that. The Viet coffee is good, but they don't make good Thai iced tea. I guess one good thing about Cafe MeKong is they have large portions, like really big dish. After trying a variety of dishes there, my conclusion is go there and get beef pho/drunken noodle and drink coconut juice/ Viet coffee. I think that's the best combo ;P read more

Disappointed in our takeout dinner. I'm a pregnant lady that was craving red curry. I immediately learned that our Thai options in Blacksburg are sorely limited. It looked like it was going to be pretty mediocre regardless. Fine. When I ordered I said "medium spicy". The guy on the phone didn't say anything. Husband got home with our food and I could barely get through small bites of curry-soaked rice due to the spiciness. I honestly couldn't tell you if it's any good. Then I read the fine print on the menu that said something like "normal, hot, or Thai hot". A correction from the guy on the phone would have been most helpful and maybe would have allowed me to satisfy this craving. Instead I'm sniffling at the dinner table and chugging milk to put the fire out. Husband's pad Thai was also sorely lacking in flavor. He tried adding peanut butter but couldn't salvage it. Unfortunately I'm going to have to learn how to cook Thai food. read more

Came here for dinner with my bud on a hunt for Thai food. The ambience feeds you images right out of the orient - a simplistic, welcoming seating area; print out sheet menus! The food in all it's flavorful fervor puts a spicy twist to the coconut and bamboo creaminess that blends most of their dishes together. Service was pretty quick, took about 10 minutes to get two full dishes out. The only cider on the menu turned out to be one of my favorites - Strongbow ! Of all the places to find it , it made a pleasant surprise and a satisfactory complement to the tang in my gravy. Very affordable prices ($-$$) considering the portions they serve. I will not be returning. I called to place a to-go order, chicken pad thai, medium spicy (They only have not spicy, spicy, and Thai spicy). We picked up the order, got home and found that we have received not spicy. The food was bland, no flavor, very little chicken and honestly just not worth eating. We called back to tell them the mistake and drove out again to get what I actually ordered. When we got there they "didn't accept" my order of "medium spicy". Instead of remaking the meal properly, they took the uneaten portion we returned, added "spicy" and gave it back. The second time around the food was dry and again not worth eating. This is the only place that has pho in Blacksburg, to my knowledge, and it had a far richer taste here than at a different pho restaurant I tried in Roanoake. The only downside was that there is only one pho menu option, so if you don't eat beef or meat in general. Service was great. read more

the best pho in Blacksburg! actually the only place that serves pho in Blacksburg. at home there are many good choices for good pho, but on a cold rainy day in Blacksburg...this is your only option for pho the pho is average at most compared to other places. the broth is ehh but its at least a good amount portion wise. the price doesn't help it's case either, it's around $10 with tip just for pho. But since they don't have competition they can choose the prices I guess. I will be returning but it's not like I have many options. read more

Not bad; like the others, we're fans of Oasis and are happy the place opened up next store. Right now, you could probably make these dishes better in your own kitchen. The portions are too big; I'd prefer smaller portions with better quality control and better prices. Noodles in both of our dishes were too chewy, and basically no peanut flavor came through in the pad thai. Vietnamese coffee had very little cream. I think the place has potential, and will check it out again in a few months. If you're looking for a place to eat or an excuse to walk around Oasis while you're waiting, give it a shot. Don't expect greatness and I think you'll be okay. It was just two of us in my group, so our entrees came out properly timed even though they were different foods. 3.25 stars, really. I've been to smaller cafes run by grocery store owners in other cities and I can certainly say this was not up to their level. read more

This is my favorite place in Blacksburg!! The thai food is some of the best I have ever had and I have never had a bad meal (and I've been here 15 or more times). My favorite dish is the pad see ew (chicken or beef) and I always get the #3 spice level (which is "hot"). The only word of caution is that they only have 3 spice levels (1, 3, & 5). The "3" is very spicy, so you may want to start with the #1 spice level (even if you like spice). read more

My husband and I like Thai food in general. We were excited that this place opened and could not wait to try it. We ordered massaman curry and green curry. The dishes came amazing fast we were pleasantly surprised till we actually looked at them with horror. Mush!! there is no hint of freshness or zesty look thats essential for Thai curry. The green curry especially tasted like a pot of mush with artificial green color in the soup base. Where is the curry? where is the coconut milk. I went home very hungry because I could not eat it after the first bite. I am sad to predict that this place wont last.
