The guac was great and they were super fast and friendly! But I found a huge bone in my chicken (after chomping down in it!) on the second bite and by the third bite I was out of guac. I honestly couldn't finish it and being raised in San Diego, I know Mexican food! YUM. Any college student in Fort Collins knows that Cafe Mexicali is awesome. The best thing on the menu is the smothered sweet pork burrito with the creamy habanero sauce - if you don't get this, you're missing the point entirely. The burritos are huge. I have never even come close to finishing one in a sitting; I usually eat half and save the other half for lunch the next day. Trust me, it's just as good as leftovers! The guacamole is also fantastic - I bought a pint ($8) the other night to share with friends and everyone was asking where I bought it. The line can get pretty long around 6pm. There's a deal where children eat free on Mondays, so things get a little hectic. If you're a student, their college club gives you a 20% discount every time! read more

Cafe Mexicali has had a few revisions to their recipes and service seance I first went but none the less they are still my absolute favorite place ever. Nothing has really ever changed enough to remember or for me to take serious note of. I have never had a bad meal and I have tried a few new things too that were also just as good as their burritos. The enchiladas coming to mind.... anyways I really like their new staff lately. They have been great, and im pretty sure the person that was complained about is gone. I really cannot comment on the rest of their food but I know that their Smothered Chicken Burrito with half of the Creamy Habanero sauce and half of the Green Chile sauce, no beans, extra rice, and tortilla strips inside is something I have to eat on a at least once a month basis. These 5 stars are for the tortillas! Yummy freshly made delicious tortillas! Also the raspberry margaritas are an incredible way to end the evening. My favorite is the sweet pork quesole light meat and creamy habanero sauce. My husband had their new barbacoa and it was excellent. If you don't like really sweet meat stay away from the sweet pork. Everytime I visit my boyfriend in Colorado we go here, because he is quite honestly and most voraciously obsessssed with their pork barbacoa burrito with half creamy habanero and half red spicy sauce. I don't have enough good things to say about this place. It is almost the only thing I miss about Fort Collins. Their food is absolutely amazing and their service is on par with their food. I always get their chicken burrito with the green chile and spicy habanero sauce. I usually get chips rather than the lettuce and pico on the side. I have made trips to Fort Collins solely to frequent this establishment which should give you an idea of how delicious it is. I have also had their sweet pork which is delicious. What really makes this burrito stand out is the creamy habanero sauce that you can get both inside the burrito and smothered on top of it. The sauce is not too hot but is so good that I usually run out of it before I finish my burrito. The meat for the burrito is good but nothing special. I prefer the chicken to the steak personally. I like that you can get chips instead of salad as a side because I love dipping those in the sauce and the burrito fillings that spill out. The burrito is priced a little bit higher than a Chipotle or Qdoba but is much better than either of those. I believe that it is larger as well as I never seem to fully finish mine and I have no problem finishing a burrito at either of those other two places. The atmosphere of the restaurant is typical burrito bar place which is to say nothing special but it is always clean and so are the bathrooms. The Bad: The food was cold, their spiciest red sauce was not even the slightest bit spicy. I had cheese enchiladas and they were luke warm and cold in some spots. the green Chile was OK, but on the bland side. My son got a shredded beef rolled taco thing, the beef was very salty and had a strange sweet flavor. The Good: The flour tortillas were great. Beans and rice were decent. The guacamole was very good as well. This would be great for someone who doesn't like spicy food, but still wants California style Mexican food. Authenticity is the often the pinnacle in which a Mexican restaurant can stand on to achieve success, and whether Mexicali can personally say it's summited or not isn't my ground to stand on. There are many places I like and even love in Fort Collins, some I do not like and hate. I'll write many reviews for the places I feel strongly about either way. My first review goes to Cafe Mexicali. I don't just love Cafe Mexicali, I crave it. And I'm really only thinking of one thing. I've tried a burrito, pretty good. Tried bites of other things, pretty good. However the Sweet Pork Quesole with the habanero sauce is among my list of perfect foods. Combine that with a salad (romaine, chipotle sour cream, pico de gallo and guacamole, all of which I mix together) and you're in heaven. Like any good mexican dish, it starts with the ingredients and their fresh tortillas make all the difference here. Best tortillas in town. Also, if you're in the mood for some dessert, the Tres Leches cake is great. One of the few places in town that has it on their regular menu. Expect to wait in line as this is a college hangout, but well worth it. Try it, you'll like it.... or in my case, crave it! read more

I love this place. I always order the cheese enchiladas with the creamy habanero sauce. Absolutely amazing!! The rice is incredible too!! Owners, however, get 1 star. They used to have a tip jar but employees said that the tips never went to the staff. It was to help owners with the cost of uniforms (uniforms consist of a shirt with their logo) and sometimes (and apparently not very often), the money went to fund a party for the employees. I use to love this restaurant and the food still isnt bad but definitely not as good as it use to be. Honestly the location in Greeley is far better. We arrived on a Friday at 5pm. The line wrapped around and through the back of the restuarant, no big deal we were prepared to wait as we've experienced the amazing food and service. This time was different and as we approached to order it was so loud we had to yell our order over the plastic shields. She had a rough time hearing us or anyone previous to us. We ordered smothered burritos and watched as they entered the rolling oven only to get stuck in the backed up orders. The burritos sat in the oven double the time before a young boy pulled them off and was obviously confused. The burrito we received had little sauce on it and it was supposed to be smothered! I asked for more sauce when watching them prepare it although they couldn't hear anything. We asked for sides when ordering but again they couldn't hear us. They ran out of guacamole so at the register she informed us that would be a wait. When we approached to pay, the lady was disengaged and made no eye contact. She abruptly asked what we ordered and we informed her as well as asked for sides and drinks. She huffed and yelled to the young boy "side of cream". Suddenly 1 our of the 5 in the back who had been standing there watching the insanely busy line, hit the phone and dropped it into a warmed container of red sauce. We watched and waited to see if the sauce would be disposed but instead they wipe the phone down and close the sauce. That's disgusting and perhaps it was tossed later but from a managers perspective the 5 standing in the back should have immediately removed the sauce in front of the customers eyes. I was rushed throughout ordering to paying and I would have purchased more like the dessert but due to the rude attitude of staff and the phone debacle I didnt. I'm so sad to say I won't be returning as now I cant trust the cleanliness of the food. read more

I'm totally addicted to Cafe Mexicali - especially the sweet pork burrito with creamy habinero sauce. Also the beef Quesolle is awesome. And, you have to check out the chicken nachos. The Ensalada Mexicali is great too... I think what puts Cafe Mexicali over the top is their tortillas and sauces. You have to order a dozen tortillas with your meal and just dip in their lime cilantro sauce, sour cream, or lime ranch. Be sure to make at least 4-5 trips to this place every month - you'll never get tired of it. I do have one complaint, however about you, Mexicali: YOU'RE NOT IN DENVER. in an effort to have a fun summer afternoon, the boyfriend and i decided to take a 4 mile bikeride to try out cafe mexicali. as it turned out, the 20 minutes we were riding over there was the same 20 minutes mother nature decided to pour down rain, so wet, muddy, and cold, i was like, "this better be effing good." so i ordered tacos! and while i was waiting anxiously to eat them, they got jacked, by some guy who thought they were his fish tacos, which they were OBVIOUSLY not. but "hey, these are my tacos" guy got my tacos. they totally handled it, though, and brought me more, which totally rocked. tacos = AMAZING. the chicken was so much better than any other "fast" mexican place, and i appreciate the sweet pork factor. i guess that's what the "cali" part means. OH, and boyfriend had the quesolle, which is my mexican place DREAM. cheese, meat, tortilla, and that's it. perfect for my inner picky eater. in conclusion, despite the rain and taco-jack, i like it here, i'll definitely be back to try more more more. read more

Pros: Portion Size Price Creamy Habanero Sauce Cons: Food Preparation Customer Service My girlfriend and I ate here tonight and we were both surprised by what we received, but not in a good way. First, it was packed, which is no fault of the restaurant.... it should actually be a positive sign. However, it was plainly clear that this level of activity negatively affected food preparation. The server gave my girlfriend the wrong type of beans (which was reparable but annoying) and her cheese enchilada was grossly undercooked (They essentially keep food in warming trays and assemble/send them down a conveyor to heat it up). Much of the cheese inside her enchilada had not melted. The pinto beans were undercooked, too. My girlfriend lived in Mexico for several years and as such was very disappointed with her meal. I had a better experience with the smothered steak burrito. I had them use green chili inside and top it with creamy habanero sauce. The rice and black bean filling was serviceable, but forgettable. The steak was well-cooked and well-seasoned. The burrito was solid overall and it had a good amount of heat without being overpowering. They garnished my burrito with plain lettuce nibs for some reason, which I found unnecessary. The real highlight of the meal was the creamy habanero sauce, which was delightfully creamy and flavorful. It wasn't enough to make up for the negative aspects of our meal, but I enjoyed it. I'd give them another chance for lunch if I had a good coupon. Cafe Mexicali is far from authentic, and I plan on exploring other Mexican restaurants in the area before coming back. read more

The cafeteria assemby-line style service yielded the worst pseudo Mexican meal I have ever had. I ordered the cheese enchiladas, and while the individual ingredients were fresh: dumping a couple of tortillas, cheese, and sauce in an aluminum bowl and putting it under a heat conveyor does not yield an enchilada. It yields a mushy bowl of slop. This was truly mess hall service, with tasteless rice and beans thrown on top. While the line moved fairly quickly at lunch on my visit, I would NEVER recommend this place, nor will I return. There are PLENTY of Mexican restaurants in Fort Collins, both full-service and fast food. Any of these other choices shame the food served at this establishment and are comparable in price. read more

This place was great when it started out - the food was fresh, service was fast and the manager was around a lot. Now, however, not so good. The food is still fresh and pretty fast, but the last 4-5 times we've been we've found a really dirty dining room. If it's busy at all, it's hard to find a clean table. On our last visit we saw two college-age diners sit down at a dirty table with an even dirtier child seat beside it.
