Cafe Mosaics is a very unique place, tiny and comfortable.. But the service leaves something to be desired. They barely talk to you and it took over 15 minutes for the girl to bring the bill. She didn't ask how the food was or if we needed anything. I felt like I was causing them an inconvenience. They were really slow getting the food out and then claimed the kitchen was really busy.. even though the place was pretty much empty. The menu is all vegetarian, I wasn't to into it, and the quality wasn't very good. The soup seemed like it was just warm water with no flavor. I've been here twice. The first time I had a tofu sandwich and the other I had the falafel (wrapped in a pita) with the soup of the day (potato/leek). Each time I thoroughly enjoyed my meal and really do not have anything negative to say about the place. Because I went during the day it wasn't too busy but because it is such a small place I could see how it might be hard to get in at certain times (like dinner rush). Whoever conceived the menu at Cafe Mosaics deserves a prize, everything you'd expect at a vegetarian spot and several things you wouldn't. Delightfully creative. Multiple visits have proven the kitchen does the menu justice. However ambitious the plate, it seems like they just know what they're doing. Loved this place! Had to find food while I was starving in Edmonton and its quite hard for me because of all my allergies but thought to give this place a try. They had food that I could eat! I couldn't believe it! Having an allergy to eggs, milk and gluten is so very hard but they made it work. Not only did they have food I could eat but it was delicious! I normally eat gluten free but the gf version of the Happy cow bowl offered curry instead of teriyaki sauce and I preferred the teriyaki version. Essentially this was a version of the Korean Bee Bim Bap, only with Canadian veggies and some cashews. It came hot and stayed hot. The place lost a star, though because I found a fusilli noodle in with the rice at the bottom of the bowl. To me this indicates a level of carelessness in the kitchen that makes me nervous for actual celiacs. Although this restaurant is vegan and vegetarian, it seems they have a bit of a F - you attitude to GF. Another example - the recommended GF version of granola and fruit? Omit granola. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meals, though the friend who ordered the unicorn veggie burger initially expressed disappointment that it wasn't beef, she liked the sweet sour spicy flavour combo. This place is the best and I love it. Especially important to support the vegan movement in Edmonton. To be honest though I've had much else on the menu except the mystery burger which has been great the whole time. The only thing I wish they did was make the potatoes more crispy - I find they're quite soft. Maybe that's healthier? Either way though, it's one of my favourite places to eat in the city. read more

I have a love-hate relationship with Cafe Mo. I always end up craving something from their menu and their food has yet to disappoint me. However, the general ambience of the restaurant has a "too hipster to care" vibe going on. If you don't appear to be one of their regulars, or very heavily into the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle the servers seem to just glance over you. I wandered in here because I was intrigued by the lack of sign on the front of the shop. By intrigued, I mean irritated because I had no idea what this place was. I came in with a friend to satisfy my curiosity and I have to say I'm in love with the decor. It's super light and open. I really enjoyed the way you could see into their bar and the ingredients were out on display. The food portions were huge. I got a burger and I could barely finish it. The patties are thick, maybe a little too thick, but overall delicious. I'm not a huge healthy eating person, but after coming here it makes me want to be a little more interested in what exactly I'm eating. read more

The renos they did have served this place very well in my opinion. They now have garage style roll up windows so they can pull them up in the summer for an amazing outdoor patio effect! The food here is off the hook! If I could suggest one meal it'd be the Happy Cow Bowl! It's delicious and nutritious vegan take on a Vemicelli bowl. This is my 2nd visit to Café Mosaics and enjoyed every bit of it as much as the first time. My friends and I came for an early dinner and we were allowed to pick our table. We each ordered a dish and ended up picking off of each other's plates to share. I got the portobello quinoa risotto with green grilled scapes. The portobello mushrooms were huge and plentiful, tofu bits sprinkled in the mixture of tomato, onion, red/brown rice quinoa that was slowly cooked in a coconut cream sauce. We all ended up with a diving into their vegan chocolate cake topped with soy chocolate mousse with blackeberries. The cake didn't have a chance with us 4. I've been here before their renovations and thought they were great despite a small space. Their new space is great - lots of space, cleaner and fresh environment with lots of windows and good lighting. We ordered the turnip cake for our appetizer, vegan cheeseburger with candied bacon and taro burger with vegan Caesar salad. The candied bacon was amazing and I highly suggest getting it for a side. It was like beancurd that was sweet with a little bit of heat. Fantastic! The taro burger was burnt in one area, but the rest of it was great. Fresh ingredients, including alfalfa seeds, avocado, tomato and lettuce. It was quite filling and I ended up taking half to go. My company and I felt they forgot our appetizer because we had to remind them about it. It arrived 40 minutes after we ordered it. Thankfully it was quite sweet, which ended up being a nice wrap up but it would have been too sweet to eat as an appetizer. The appetizer comes with four turnip cakes, which are quite filling. It doesn't pair well with the sweet and sour chilli sauce but it was wonderful with the Tahiti sauce. However, it was simply too sweet after the first cake. Their service has always been poor and I believe it's simply how they operate. I'm fine with self-seating and taking care of myself, but the server never asked how our food tasted and was not friendly. I think our original server left for a break or something because we had a new server halfway through our meal, and the original server did not communicate with our new server about our missing appetizer, so our table was cleared and our bill was brought to us before we had our turnip cake. Prices have also gone up - expect $10 for your appetizer and $15 for your burger with a side. There's a couple hits with Cafe Mosiac but too many misses. It's not a place I'd consider coming back in a long time. read more

This is a world-class vegetarian and vegan cafe. Great atmosphere, good drinks, and amazing food. The pancakes are my personal favourite, but you can't really go wrong with their menu. The Benny is delicious, the huevos rancheros are great, and their baked goods are very good. I'd recommend the banana bread. read more

Café Mosaics is a nice restaurant with a nice vibe. Unfortunately, the product doesn't match the pitch. To the point: the food is boring, standard fare. I find that much of it is simply lower-quality, pricier versions of the food I eat at home. It's certainly edible, but there's much better. I'd go as far as to say that it's my least favorite vegetarian fare that I've had. Being a vegan in the area, however, I've spent a fair bit of time there, and I've found that the menu does vary in quality. Sandwiches are great, breakfasts bland. Save room for the vegan chocolate cake too. My recommendation, however: go to Friends & Neighbours next door and have their Vegetarian Sandwich. Before moving to Edmonton, I asked a vegan friend from here about vegetarian dining. He said "there's nothing that great here, but for lack of better options, people go crazy over average food." While this isn't a fair generalization (see the deliciousness of Padmanadhi, Langano Skies, ...) I now realize he had Café Mosaics in mind. The food here seems to have improved drastically since my last visit, the portions were reasonable and the flavors were great! That being said, the service is still brutal. We received our main dishes (a long time after ordering, might I add) before our appetizer, and we needed to remind the server after receiving our mains that we had in fact ordered an appetizer. She mentioned she would speak with the manager about it to see if they could "do anything for us". When we got the bill there was no discount or anything, so that was pretty disappointing. I can sum up my experience here in one word: disappointed. My roommate and I came here for a girl's night out, as we had both been here before and enjoyed the food. Honestly, I don't know what has happened to this place since then. My friend and I started off with some lattes. I ordered a macadamia milk mocha and ended up with some weird americano with mocha powder and macadamia milk on the side. I figured there might have been a miscommunication with the server and luckily another server was happy to make me what I had ordered. That was but the first mishap... next the food: We both shared the mushroom pate appy, which was ok (nothing I would rave over but decent), and then got our own entrees. I got the Monkey Bowl which is listed as spicy. I asked if the kitchen could do it with little spice, as I am not good with spicy, and the server said yes. The bowl that came out had a LAYER of chili oil on top and I could not eat it. Our server offered to have it remade without the chili oil and I said sure but asked for it to go as my friend was done her food. The server said sure and then proceeded to bring me back the same soup I just told her I COULD NOT EAT in a jar. At this point I was done and got up to pay and leave. At the till I explained the situation to the other server who chalked it up to "oh she's new". My friend was surprised to hear this since our server was her server when she was there 6 months ago. Also, I worked in a restaurant for 4 yrs; if a customer cannot eat something you DO NOT give it back to them... this is simple common sense. They did not offer to remove it from the bill or do anything to remedy the issue. Needless to say I will not be going back. read more

I had the daily special which was a salad roll, which doesn't sound nearly as delicious as it actually was, along with a side of some quite tasty hummus. The -only- reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because there wasn't much of a desert menu. And what they did have had no gluten free options. The restaurant was very empty for lunch time so we basically had the place to ourselves. I ordered the curry and my friend soup. The curry was ok. It was a bit sweet for my tastes, but the veggies were very fresh and plentiful. I finished it and was full and we sat and talked for another three hours. The room is comfortable and the prices are pretty good! I can't say Cafe Mosiac left me dying to come back for more, but I am happy I finally made it to this little Whyte Ave cafe! read more

This tiny place is really great for breakfast. I like the fact that they put a lot of effort into providing rich comfortable vegetarian food. I always get the huevos rancheros. Edmonton severely lacks vegan & vegetarian options and as a non meat eater, dining out is near impossible in this city. I've heard many great things about Cafe Mosaics so I was excited to finally give it a try - HUGE disappointment. The food choices were exciting and interesting (in theory). They have a horrible selection of beverages (Jones Soda, beer, and tap water) and very dirty tables/chairs. Our food arrived quickly (veggie burger with hash brown & vegetarian chilli with salad) and the portions were large. My veggie burger pattie was good, very good actually. However, the hash browns were uncooked and oily. The chilli was mediocre and caused huge stomach upset. You could tell the food was cooked in a rush. I am giving this place a low rating because there was no care put into our meals, the meals were just meh, everything was dirty, the bathrooms were nasty, the doors were broken, the music was horrible, and like everyone else has said, the service is AWFUL and condescending. read more

RENOVATED MOSAICS IS A DISSAPOINTMENT I was so excited to return to Mosaics to experience the new renovated restaurant. Unfortunately, the menu has been changed so much that it's ruined Cafe Mosaic's for me. I was a very frequent/loyal customer for many years and I loved getting the Mushroom Portabella Pasta. The dish is completely unrecognizable now: changed noodles and now they offer only a vegan version with coconut oil, barely any vegetables and flavour compared to the old recipe. THE PORTION IS LESS THAN HALF OF THE ORIGINAL DISH (and for the same cost). What I loved about the old restaurant was how flexible they were when I ordered, tonight i asked if i could get the pasta in the original recipe, and my server said no. It took 45 MINUTES for us to get our food (no update or apology or one single word from our server). What used to be a big jewel in Edmonton is just another overpriced restaurant with subpar food. read more
