We've been coming here for more than a decade, and it's been around about 40 years. Originally run by Hap, he sold it a couple of years ago. When he was there, the place ran like a well oiled machine. It never mattered how packed the parking lot was, or how busy it was inside - he'd be directing traffic and people flowed in and out. You'd ALWAYS get in even if you had to wait 10 minutes. It was good food served by experienced servers with that "top of the morning" kind of energy, who knew the menu backwards and forwards. I understand wanting to retire, and one of the hazards when you're a charismatic personality, is that whoever follows in your shows may have a challenge. We saw it with "Tasty Toms" which is basically gone now. Today, there are only a couple of original servers there, and a bunch of new ones who are "ok" just sometimes we wait 10 minutes to have someone come to our table (unless it's the two lightning fast veterans). Things have downgraded over time, and we're still romantically interested in the place but when you come on a Saturday now, there's no problem getting a parking spot as the lot is usually 50% vacant. Same with inside. Make no mistake, we still like it there and continue to come. It's just that with the flow of time, things change, and not everything can last the same way forever. Easy to find via Google Maps. Private parking lot but it was packed by 9:30am. Place was 20% full Saturday at 8:30AM but by 9:30AM was a packed full house and noise level with it. I came with my sister, brother in law and 2 year old nephew. We got a corner booth with booster seat but they also have high chairs. We got 2 hunger buster 1s to share between all of us. We also ordered 1 pancake off the kids menu which was cheaper than a "side" of pancake via the menu (query if the "side" comes with more than 1...). Potatoes were cooked well and not greasy. Ham was too thinly sliced and barely sharable (not enough) sausage was really good and not those fatty greasy breakfast ones you can get. Bacon was a little undercooked for my liking but definitely cooked to be edible. Eggs were a little dry but I am totally okay with that. Overall a great sharing breakfast plate. Generous big bottles of ketchup and maple syrup and a giant tin of margarine and assorted jams (smooth peanut butter, raspberry, strawberry, marmalade, blueberry) for our toast. Came with side of toast - brown, white, sourdough, rye. We got brown and rye. Both were fine, nothing too fancy. Brown was cut way thicker. Already buttered. Woman's and men's bathroom (gender specific). Waitress was kind but as the place filled up never offered us water refills. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by this place. It's been around for a long time and I always drove past it on Stoney Plain Road, but never really went. Now that I've moved to Meadowlark, we decided to walk on over and check it out on a Sunday morning. We got there just before the AM rush at about 9:15 AM. It opens at 8:00 AM, and by the time we were leaving it about about 10:15 and there was a giant line. Clearly this place is a neighbourhood favourite! Our server was run off her feet but was still about to get everything for us without forgetting anything. I honestly have no clue how she did it, she was amazing. Diner servers are always having to do the most and she was straight up impressive. Worked like 20 tables in two sections it was wild. I hope she got a break throughout. We had eggs benny (vegetarian), pancakes, and my partner had sausages. He liked the sausages and I liked everything vegetarian. Nothing to complain about in the slightest and we ate it all. Ambiance was BUSY, but we still got fast food and service. We actually say outside on the patio because it was a nice morning. It was a less noisy out there for sure. We'll definitely be back! First time here and we had the Eggs Benedict with back bacon. The hollandaise sauce was amazing!!!! Creamy, with just the right amount of acid and delicious! We weren't too impressed with the hash browns though. They were deep fried and unfortunately ours weren't very fresh. They were barely warm, a bit shrivelled and didn't taste very fresh. The eggs Benny was definitely worth coming here for though. We came at 8:00am on a Saturday morning and it was busy but there was plenty of tables. We were seated immediately and our server took our orders within minutes. Our order arrived within minutes and our server was very attentive. I've been coming to this breakfast spot since I was 9 years old. Not much has changed over the years besides some servers faces. It's a diner so expect diner food. Typical fruit bowls, same as every other breakfast spot ever.. Same toast options as everywhere else. That being said the hype about their hollandaise sauce is real. Extra creamy and always consistent. All of their food has been consistent for the 20 years I've been coming here. Change is generally good but there is no point changing a menu that stirs people out of bed early to eat. Beyond reasonably priced. I have never left this place unsatisfied or feeling like I've been gouged for a quick profit. You can leave fully sated without breaking the bank. Service is ALWAYS prompt and friendly. Came to Hap's on a Sunday around noon. Parking lot, packed ! Walked in, Packed ! Queue for the Cashier ! Since this was my first visit I was a wee bit concerned. Concern alleviated, we were seated almost immediately and up comes our server with a coffee pot in hand. Even though the place was quite full, our server was hopping. Had our orders placed, and ice water on the table in no time. The food came out and as expected, Hap's is a diner ! I went with French Toast with Hamburger patties. Sure enough a plate with eggs, french toast and a separate plate with (you guessed it) Hamburger patties. Everything was served up hot. However, it was all just a bit of a miss on taste. Unfortunately it wasn't overly tasty, which was disappointing, because it looked good. Overall: Hap's hits the mark on service, and I commend the servers there, they are really moving to get folks fed and on their way. The flavor of the food was just a miss for me. The food was what you would expect from a diner. Decent and big portions, just a bit pricier than normal. The reason it's 3 stars is because this place stressed me out. Our server was literally (yes, I mean literally) running from table to table. When she took our order, we could barely understand her because she was talking so fast. When she dropped off the food, she literally just put everything down as fast as she could in front of my wife without telling us what was what. And then when we were finished she threw the bill on the table and ran off. I don't know why, but seeing her so stressed made me stressed. Maybe they need to hire more staff? I went up front to pay and the girl at the front seemed uninterested in taking my payment. She was just standing there zoned out and I asked if I can pay here, she very slowly nodded but didn't gesture me over. So I walked up and she just handed me the card machine without a single word. This is a cute old school diner. For you coffee addicts out there, they give you your own coffee pot lol that already won be over. They are known for their breakfast but this weekend, I wanted to try out the burger. It was quick huge, as you can see in the photo. I think it was a little bit too meaty for me. This is a destination restaurant. Owned and operated by the same family since it first opened. It's a place for breakfast and lunch, as they close in the afternoon. Breakfast is always served. Our group of five was immediately seated but I've been here before when we had to wait for a table. The menu offers lots of flexibility such as a smaller plate and various substitutes. Every meal catagory has a vegetarian option. There is something for everyone. We had only two coffee drinkers but they left a water jug and coffee carafe on our table. All of our meals were delicious. There is a reason why Haps is so popular, and that is that they seem to enjoy making customers happy. I highly recommend you try a breakfast or lunch here. read more

The restaurant is nothing fancy, just your typical country-style breakfast place with roosters everywhere. It's clean and bright. There is always a lineup out the door on weekends, so be prepared to wait. Service is quick and friendly, the menu is ample and the prices are very reasonable - like, less than $10 for many of the breakfasts. I'll admit, I've always been cautious about Hap's Hungry House. I drive down Stony Plain Road and wonder about the sketchy location and definitely judged this book by it's cover. But when I needed a delicious breakfast pick-me-up and was in the area, I took the opportunity to be proven wrong. And I was very wrong about it! Hap's is a great establishment, with tons of breakfast options and a great lunch menu to boot. Outside, Hap's might look it's age - it's been around since 1982, after all. But inside, you're transported to a cute country diner which should be on some roadside in rural Alberta. Breakfast lasts all day at Hap's, and I suggest you get some. My eggs were cooked to perfection, the Texas toast was large and delicious, and the meat selection was unreal! Do you want sausage? Beef or pork? Pastrami instead? Or how about you do something totally crazy and order a Reuben omelette? The coffee, which they brought to our table in our own coffee jug, was fresh and tasty. The service was friendly and fast. After a filling and scrumptious breakfast, we were on our way, leaving behind the quaint diner - but a return trip is definitely in the cards. read more

I had a horrible breakfast experience here. I got the hot cakes and beef sausage links, I ate three bites and stopped in fear of my well being. It was, in a word, disgusting. I mean nothing against the folks working at Hap's, who took my meal off the bill no problem. It's just the food was so gross and inedible to me, and my brunch companion told me he was sick (i.e. - running for the toilet) 45 min later. It was just greasy and cheap, but not for a cheap price. One lousy egg (light yellow yolk), 2 giant inedible rubbery hot cakes with NOT MAPLE syrup, and three dessicated yet greasy fried butterflied beef links cost $10.70. Who the heck butterflies and fries beef sausage links? That defeats the point of beef sausage! They were so overcooked and dry that one rolled off the heaping pile of rubbercakes and onto the floor. (It should have joined the meatball and rolled right out the door, safer for everyone...) And coffee is $2.30 a person. So in my mind, this is the equivalent price to a Smitty's or a Denny's, which while not great are generally tolerable. This place is serving food that is the quality of the Commadore downtown but for close to twice the price. The decor is cute, tho I don't know how clean as the ketchup and syrup bottles were sticky and oozing. Our server dropped off our food and then did not come back for the entire meal, even after we sat finished for some time. Perhaps he saw my uneaten food and was afraid to approach the table. They do give you little carafes of coffee, which is a nice touch, but if it means a lot less service... And a different server cleared up her bills and cleared the tables on either side of us while we waited for our server to return, she had blinders on I guess. Bottom line is I wouldn't risk coming here again, and don't recommend it unless you have trucker guts of steel. I'm sure there's a market for this food, I am just not it, and will go back to Denny's if I really feel the need for greasy breakfast. At least there I can drown it in Tabasco. read more

They have upgraded flooring and the place feels nice and clean with fun decor splattered throughout. There is ample free parking. They aren't open Monday's. The hash browns with green onion...mmm...add your ketchup and salt... or if you're like my breakfast companion order a side of sour cream. One of my party had a half order of waffles. This came with a side bowl or fresh whipped cream and a bowl of strawberries, unfortunately not fresh, canned...but still, with a waffle and whip...mmm. The decor- lots of chickens on the walls, a bit tired and in need of an update. The place gets busy on the weekend but the tables get turned quickly so we have never had to wait too long. I haven't been here in years! I think it's because the full parking lot always intimidates me. Today I caught Hap's at a nice, quiet, quarter after nine. The first thing that strikes me is the atmosphere. Not the decor, which looks suspiciously like a toned down Chez Coras. I'm refering to the black board specials like meatloaf and pie at great prices. And the smell of the grill mingling with the scent of freshly brewed coffee. Ahhhh...Brings me back to the morning shift at the Husky House when I was a lass. The menu is pretty extensive. It's got everything you want, and things you didn't know you wanted for breakfast...like an egg with your french toast and sausage, or pastrami. Service is fantastic--lovely and efficient peeps. I got a water and a coffee straight away. Creamers and syrup followed immediately afterwards, but I have no idea when my waitress snuck that carafe of coffee on my table. I was wondering where she was with the coffee pot when it occurred to me that maybe I should look in the blue thingy I'd just noticed. Guess what? Personal carafe of coffee!! YOINK! She's got exceptional hearing as well. She passed me without looking when I dropped my napkin on the plate, and she backtracked to collect my dirty plate. Well, okay, actually it was a fork that clinked, but I didn't sit for a second with a dirty plate in front of me. Excellent prices, great service and fantastic food...old school. If you're looking for an eclectic mix of clientele, homestyle breakfasts, & friendly service, Hap's is the place for you! Hap's is one of my favourite breakfast joints. It is almost always packed, but you never have to wait more than 10 minutes for a table, & most times won't have to wait at all. Many of the servers have worked there for years and are always friendly and recognise their regulars. The menu is huge and there is something for everyone. My husband hates eggs, & was delighted to see a "skip the eggs" section in the menu. You are also able to order off the menu, which is a great option! When feeling indecisive, I order one egg, one pancake, one bacon strip, one sausage & one hashbrown patty. Plus they have raisin toast, which delights me to no end. As well, when you order coffee, it is served in your own personal carafe of the table! No waiting for a warm up. Hap's is closed on Mondays. I can't tell you how many times I've shown up a Monday to see an empty parking and remember what day it is! Ha ha. That's my own fault - everyone needs a day off! read more

Coffee is pretty good for a breakfast place. Poached eggs done properly, not in a form thing. Great portions. Love the potatoes even though they look mass produced. Meat portions look good. Food is NOT greasy. Thank goodness. Pancakes and French toast are done well. Service is friendly and boy, do they run around. Although 20 years ago I'd be inclined to rate Hap's 3 stars tops, it seems to have graduated to another level. The tender ham seared just right, the basted eggs medium indeed, the tasty browned potatoes fresh with raw green onions, and the endless coffee that I don't bother with all came with the most pleasant cheery service from the hard-working crew. Obviously the kitchen is better than in the past, and it shows. Next time up in Edmonton, especially on the weekend, head over to the enlarged Hap's on Stoney Plain instead of the smaller venues of High Level and Sugar Bowl on the south side of the river that as great early weekend breakfast spots tend to be packed and much more expensive. As Hap's isn't all that far from WEM and other west-end shopping, drop over and then trustfully be very pleased. read more

You want breakfast all day right? Well, Hap's is the go to spot on the west end if you're a big breakfast lover. This place was packed to the T when we came on a Saturday afternoon. That's right, it was full even past 1pm! Luckily, the wait wasn't long so no need to fret. Guess there really is a shortage of decent places to eat west side. I was surprised to see that they have a ton of outdoor style picnic tables set up. Would be nice to sit out there during the summer. And watch non-stop traffic go by on Stony Plain haha. - Regular tea ($2.30) - at least it's unlimited refills - Egg-cellent with strip bacon ($9.85 large) - one friend went with the egg-cellent which comes with three eggs (sunny side up), home fries, texas toast and her choice of meat, which was strip bacon. I had a few bites of hash potatoes (they call it home fries) and they were actually pretty tasty. - Belgian waffles ($6.50) with fruit ($3.50) - my friend and I each got a Belgian waffle. One with blueberry and the other with strawberry. Both come with a side bowl of whipped cream. For $10, the waffles are nothing special. Plus, they just come out completely bare - this ain't no hipster, stylish waffle. Still can't believe they charge $3.50 for the smallest bowl of fruit! Like seriously??? I'm not a big on breakfast food in general but they do offer some heavier options (burgers, humdingers and soups). Perhaps I should have ordered one of those as I was still hungry after eating my meal. I have been eating at Hap's since they opened their first location, east up Stony Plain Rd. I have always found excellent service and good, honest, simple food, prepared well. These days Breakfast and Lunch are all you get, and while I like their lunch menu, Hap's is all about the big breakfast and the carafe of coffee they leave you. There is no better late morning hangover cure on the north side of the river. It will be busy. It will be noisy. It will be worth it. The servers are generally chipper and perky but with personality, and they work their butts off here. In spite of that, I have generally found the service to be excellent. Even when they are jumping, they get you sat, caffeinated, and fed in good time, with good food. Who doesn't like breakfast? Eat it at Hap's. read more
