Don't get food to go here. The food was ok and would have gotten 3-3.5 stars. However, I got my order to-go because I was heading to work. As I waited I start seeing foods being served constantly, and eventually 3-4 customers who came in after me were getting their food. So I asked the waitress what is happening and she went in the kitchen to ask them, then I just sat there seeing more dishes being served to people after me. I tried approaching the waitress again to let her know that I no longer want my food, and she quickly ran past me to go pack my food. I am a little confused about the low rating for Cafe on the Ave. I'm about to enter my junior year of college, and I've been coming here since the beginning of my freshman year. The coffee is really good! I usually get the vanilla latte or one of their special seasonal flavors. I will say- one time I did try the chai latte (pictured below) and it was a little too spicy for my liking. However, I know that's just how some people like their chai, so no stars off for that one. I do have to take a star off for their wifi/overall setting. It's almost impossible to find a place to sit in here. I would say out of all the times I've ever come here, I only find a place to sit about half the time. When I have found places to sit, I often find that the wifi doesn't work or it slows down drastically after a while. I used to study here, but it's gotten to the point where I've had to leave and go home to finish whatever I was doing on my computer, so I stopped coming for that. I've only tried the food once. I got a sandwich and it was pretty good- not bad and not excellent. I think I would have to try something else before I could speak to their food quality, so stay tuned for an updated review on that. All in all, it's a pretty good little spot. I agree with a lot of the reviews that the service has improved in the past few months, so if you have been thinking about giving this place a second chance I would recommend it for sure! read more

Cafe on the Ave is my go to place for food late at night and when I'm craving a large quantity of the food. Their signature item is the Kimchi fried rice with bacon. The food at Cafe on the Ave is perfect for when you're craving some slightly greasy and large quantity of food. The kimchi fried rice is by far one of my favorite dishes here and I would get it for there to go and to eat there. It's a large serving of kimchi fried rice in a cast iron skillet. The fried rice comes with two fried eggs with fried rice mixed on the bottom. Highly recommend the bacon option with the kimchi fried rice. The pasta here is also pretty good but does lack depth and flavor at times. The pasta alfredo is very creamy and covered in sauce. The one drink I got here that I really like is the Green Tea steamer with soy milk. The drink was not too sweet with a rich matcha aroma. The steamer just essentially means steam milk on top. Overall, I'd come back here when I'm pretty hungry and looking for a large portion. It's a great space to go with friends. read more

After four years, this place has changed A LOT since my first review. The new management has added a lot of good breakfast and lunch choices to their menu, and the coffee has improved since I think they use Herkimer coffee (I could be wrong). I like to go here as a quick brunch before class since it's pretty fast and reliable. The service is okay, and the staff is pretty nice. That being said, the quality is just ok. I paid ~$12 for a mushroom and bacon omelette that I can make at home for less than $2. Pricing is pretty up there, which is to be expected, but if I can make the same thing at home I will. read more

I'm of the graduate student ilk, who actually cares a bit about things like service and quality. This place might be acceptable for a 19 year old looking for hangover food, but it's just atrocious for anyone to work or study in (albeit they're open till very late) and definitely don't take your visiting parents here. When I walked in, it looked like a third rate dungeon: the floor was literally sticky and the lighting left a lot to be wanted. The place was a complete mess, no tables cleared or bussed. The first thing that struck me was the price of the food items on the menu. Quite pricey, it can range up to $10 for a salad. Oh yea, definitely not wallet friendly for my fellow struggling college students out there. So I ordered something more simple from the menu, an iced tea (unsweetened). Quite reasonably priced at $2.50 and quite refreshing for a hot weather, but it is what it is. An iced tea. Nothing more, nothing less, and definitely nothing amazing. My sister got the iced latte. It was fine, but it was also nothing special for her. A simple iced latte. If you decide to dine-in, you have to bus the tables yourself. Not an issue for me, but something to note for visitors! The environment is quite peaceful. Most people come in individually or with a few friends, but when I visited they all kept a respectable volume. Very friendly! Service- Upon first visit, the cashier was nice. Nothing notable, the baristas were just very respectable. Definitely won't be my go to cafe, but hey it doesn't hurt to try! read more

We stumbled upon this place, other than the what which was significant. You have to order at the front, then they serve you you food, not drink you better remember to get that at the front. Was here for a show last night, a charming little play that was looking for the realism this cafe provided. It was significantly more crowded than I was expecting but we still found a table. I am confused as to what this place wants to be, honestly. There is a 5 page menu of food, although I didn't partake in any, that seems overwhelming. The coffee smelled amazing though, so if you're looking for a nice robust cup of joe then you've come to the right place. There was a tiny little stage there that looked like it was designed for speakers, or singers which looked interesting as well. Sadly though I gathered that most of the clientele prefer to plug in their headphones and study then actually listen to what's going on. Also there is a selection of beer and cider which threw me because I thought it was a coffee shop. Needing some lunch on a day I hadn't even had breakfast, I went up to the Cafe on the Ave on a Sunday when I was at work at UW. They had a decently large selection. I was looking for something vegetarian, so I got the Mediterranean omelette with whole wheat toast and hash browns and coffee. What I ordered for coffee, what was listed on the menu, and what they called out when my coffee was ready was not the same. It being after 1 pm (and having been up since 7 am without anything to eat) having different names for the same thing was not helpful for me. They have a strange, call out your order number and you come get it and bus your own table thing going on for the cost and decor and set-up of the cafe. The food coming up was slow. Like 45 minutes. That's pretty bad. It was past lunch rush, so there's no reason for an omelette filled with vegetables to take that long. And then have the wrong kind of bread on it. And they put way too much butter on the bread, so I couldn't eat it. The omelette was greasy. How do you even make a greasy omelette? The coffee was good. The guy serving the coffee and coffee drinks was friendly. The rest of the staff was stand-offish. The rest of the customers sat like they owned the place and therefore getting anywhere in the cafe was a difficult maze of a walk. Overall, the place was okay. I won't make any effort to go back. The first time I came here, I left feeling "eh". The second time I came here, I still left feeling "eh". But now it's one of the places I go to for studying. I'm there frequently, and the reason for that are the electric outlets! Kid you not, it's so hard to find a combination of: table + chair + outlet + cord that will extend to an outlet. That of course, is not being in use, or overly crowded, or having a limited session of utilizing all those listed above (COUGH PACCAR STUDY ROOMS COUGH). Yeah, Cafe on the Ave can get crowded. But as long as I can temporary mark my territory on a table, I'm good. What I don't like is the prices... $9 for a meager sandwich? I felt scammed. The turkey pesto just wasn't my flow. Neither was the pancakes that I ordered during my first trip. The turkey pesto had an inch thick of cream cheese all around, with this cranberry jelly... That I spent an eternity trying to scrape away, which was pretty unsuccessful because the "un-toasted" bread was ripping apart. What made me TRY to finish it all was because of the fact that this meager sandwich had cost me $9. Well... I managed 3/4 of it down before I couldn't stomach it anymore. Wasn't that good after all =/ So I stuffed French fries into the sandwich ("Laugh out loud, anyone?"). Anyway, I don't understand why a Tall coffee has to be $4 either. Wish I could've snuck another Starbucks in like I did the other day! Noticed one of the workers somewhat staring at me as I threw my empty VENTI seasonal Starbucks in the trash. TAKE THAT!!! This place was good for our breakfast crew of 8 early on a Saturday morning. There are lots of tables you can move around to suit your seating and tabling needs. It seems like it would be a loud place to study but great for a group meeting. We had a wide range of breakfast options. The side of fruit is from a mix so nothing special. The yogurt bowl was huge so you will easily meet your dairy quota. The breakfast croissant sandwich is awesome. I had the northwestern omelet (13$?) which was filled with yummy salmon, cheese, and some grilled veggies. I'm not a fan of capers so left those off. This was fulfilling and delicious. My drink and food were good. I had the Mayan Mocha, which was chocolately and cinnamony and hot. My ham breakfast sandwich was standard but good. The reason for the three-star review is the service. All the servers were friendly, but the first server could not answer basic questions about the food (surely asking what is inside a breakfast burrito is not a gotcha question), and I had to wait over 20 minutes for my to-go order. Other patrons ordered dine-in after me, sat down at their tables, and received their complicated orders before mine came out. I actually had to ask the staff what the status was, and it was pretty clear that my order had not actually been placed. It took another 5-10 minutes after that for the bagel sandwich to appear. My mocha and sandwich were $14 after tax and a minor tip. Given the price, I would expect at least reasonably fast production for a basic breakfast order. I would come back, but probably only for a drink, which did come out promptly. read more

Cafe on the Ave is an average cafe that does not really do anything exceptionally well, but does everything at an about average level. The remodel they did recently was a nice touch and it seems to be a sleeker, cooler place to hangout than it was in the past. I can see how the new environment has made it more of a hangout place, rather than a place to study like the older version of Cafe on the Ave. I don't regularly come here to study though, so this is not a huge factor for me personally. The service is intentionally minimal, you order up at a cash register, and your food is brought to your table and that is it. This is perfectly fine and par for the course at most restaurants on the Ave. I usually come in to get pasta, as there is no other place that serves any pasta on the Ave to my knowledge, and the pasta is just okay. There is nothing special about any of their pastas, and it's something that could easily be made at home by a novice cook. My laziness in making pasta and washing dishes is really what keeps me coming back here. Oh well. read more

I have been back many times. Mostly for meetings. It is just a much bigger spot and easier for other people to find it. During my most recent visit, staff walked around serving free cookies. That was very nice of them! I think years ago, I would come here and study. But there are two things that make me choose other coffee shops over this one: 1. lighting is pretty bad. Good for laptop use, not great for reading textbooks. 2. music is way too loud. It is hard to hear what others have to say during meetings. Otherwise, I try to avoid here whenever I can. read more

Cafe on the Ave is consistent in every way. When I went to UW, it was a great study spot, great place to go solo, with a friend, or with a large group. They have breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods, so if you're craving both an omelet and fettuccini Alfredo at 10am? No problem! Their food is good and satisfying, and it keeps me coming back!
