ATMOSPHERE This place is very big with lots of seating. If necessary, it can accommodate large groups. I once saw a group of around 10 people. Because it is very big with lots of seating, this place gets pretty busy throughout the day. As a result, it can get pretty loud. In addition, there are almost always students studying. This place is also fairly dark, even during the day. That's probably because they don't have many lighting options. WHAT DID WE TRY? - I got their avocado and havarti burger with a veggie patty and a side of sweet potato fries. It was very good! I really liked that they served the sweet potato fries with honey. I've never tried that combo until coming to here. The honey complemented the sweet and salty taste of the fried. Their fries here are more on the soft side, which from my experience is how most places make sweet potato fries. - Their takoyaki tasted alright, but keep in mind, there were not any katsuobushi (dried bonito flakes). The kasuobushi is my favorite part of takoyaki so I was disappointed they didn't have it here. SERVICE - The first time I went, my friend waited for 20 minutes for her order to come out. I'm not sure how their order numbering system works, but we were told her order wasn't placed under the same number as ours, however, the cashier did not give her a new number. - The second time I went here, I accidentally ordered an avocado and havarti burger but with a meat patty. Because they had already made my burger, I asked if it was possible to just buy the veggie patty with havarti cheese. The cashier said yes. I was charged $8, which I thought was strange for just a veggie patty. When I got my "patty" it turned out to be fries and the patty. I think they gave me the whole meal but instead of the burger portion, they just gave me a patty. It really made me question whether my request was confusing. I was expecting ONLY a patty because I couldn't eat the meat patty. Because of these two unpleasant incidences, it left my with a bad impression for Cafe on the Ave. Sure their food is a good price and is pretty good, but their service was a real turn off. I think there are other places that serve good food for the same price, but with better service. I would rather spend my money there. It has an outdoor area where you can sit. Cons: It can be very loud. Not always the best spot if you want to sit down and have a conversation. Often it can be hard to find a seat. The food is okay but not mind blowing. Food can tend to take a while. To go orders especially. Overall: With a large selection of food and long open hours it is a place I find that I go back to around once a week. Price and food is enough in quality to where it compares to other 4 star restaurants around the Ave. You could say the pasta is a big pricy for the amount they give you. Ambience is dim lit and because of the diverse options in food (Korean/American) it attracts a lot of different people. I've heard good things about their breakfast and apparently at 10:30 people start to filter in for some late night food and beers. I had the kimchi fried rice which was a good portion and really good. The two eggs were perfect and the flavor was on point - not too sour and just how I like it. I also saw tables next to us order fried chicken and the portion sizes were generous. Not sure why it's rated poorly but I would think it's because the environment is a bit dirty. Relaxed, casual atmosphere with great food and coffee. Large, airy space with wooden tables and chairs. The coffee is consistently good - but definitely order it "extra hot" (you'll be happier.) They also have a decent loose tea selection, hot chocolate options and other cold drinks. We have eaten many times here and everything we have had has been good - well prepared, decent portions, and very tasty. I used to hate Cafe on the Ave due to a multitude of reasons: the wi-fi was incredibly slow, the food was mediocre, and the service was lackluster. From my freshman to junior year of college, I had probably been there around 3 times total and didn't enjoy any of my visits. If you asked me what I would've rated the place two years ago, I probably would've said 2 stars. Now? A solid 4 stars. From junior to senior year, I probably visited at least 3 times a month. So what changed? 1) I discovered their happy hour menu. I heard that CotA switches chefs after 8pm (when happy hour starts), and the food quality definitely shows it. Ever since trying their happy hour menu, I almost exclusively come to CotA at night. I highly recommend the sweet & spicy karaage (my favorite!). The dish is incredibly delicious and super filling, although I do wish it came with a side of rice to balance out the strong flavor of the chicken. 2) I found a daytime menu item I love: the Super California Cobb Salad. YUM. Highly recommend this dish as well. A lot of other dishes on their daytime menu are a hit-or-miss. For example, I'd avoid their sandwiches, as they're overpriced and not very filling. For the same reasons, I'd also avoid their salads, with the exception of the Super California Cobb Salad which is huge in quantity. 3) Service is still a hit-or-miss. One time they straight up forgot about my order until my friend flagged an employee down to ask about it. Other times the food has generally come out pretty quickly -- the speed mainly depends on how busy they are at the particular moment. TIP: Per my boyfriend's experience, they give you a greater quantity of food if you order for dine-in compared to if you order for take-out. For the most bang for your buck, I'd recommend ordering "for here", and then grabbing one of the to-go boxes by the utensil station and transferring the dish over. 4) Admittedly, the wi-fi is still snail slow to the point where it's almost unusable. This is the primary reason for the loss of 1 star. Need reliable wi-fi connection? This is definitely NOT the place. 95% of the time I'm here I end up having to rely on my phone's data. I understand that CotA is generally very busy and that there are usually a lot of people on the network, but since this is a cafe, I would expect the wi-fi to be more reliable than it currently is. Verdict: I've officially been converted from a hater to a lover. I love CotA. (Minus their slow wi-fi, that is.) As a former UW student, I always have liked this place. Good walking distance from the campus and has sockets to charge your devices. It is pretty big inside and good area to chat with your friends. Coming here again, it has not changed. Portion to price is student friendly and the meals are filling. They are pretty quick in getting your order out as well. Went to try the food as I walk by often and see it's relatively crowded so I thought I'd give it a shot. The burger was about as plain and adequate as it could get the fries were limp and crunchy at the same time. Honestly, I'm having such a hard time understanding why there are so many negative reviews for Cafe on the Ave. This place has honestly become one of my go-to spots for late night studying + food, and I've yet to have a disappointing experience thus far? The drinks are good, their coffee is tasty and strong and their tea bags are great and can be used more than once. I've had their lattes, hot chocolates, and chai tea lattes. I would say the only drink I wasn't too impressed with is their chai tea, but mainly because I already have a favorite spot for those ;) but in all honesty, they have so many options for delicious flavors, including their red velvet hot chocolate, which my friend was raving about after ordering as well. As for the food? Everything I've had here has been great! Kimchi fried rice, fettuccine alfredo, huge salads, and tasty sandwiches. The prices are most definitely reasonable for the amount of food that you get, I literally get leftovers with every single item I've ordered here. In addition, their desserts are bomb.com & they have several options available for your sweet tooth needs. Ambiance? Perfect for all day/night studying with plenty of seating. I would say there is a lack of outlets, but the layout of the cafe doesn't really allow for more. I'm all for the late nights, as they're the only cafe I've found in town open until 2am and I live for it! As far as service goes, all employees have been nothing but nice to me, attentive, and efficient. My only gripe? The slow wi-fi :/ I don't think it's equipped to handle the amount of people who visit at a time, but I just solve the issue by using my hotspot. QUALITY OF SERVICE 8 out of 10. The people at the cashier were friendly and kind. You bus your own tables here! PRICE 9 out of 10. You get your bang for your buck here. They give generous portions and you can easily make a meal into at least two. If you're on a budget but still want the convenience of eating out, this may be a great solution. Meh, right? Um, NO.... OH . MY . GOODNESS!!! It. Was. Incredible. And I mean IN-CRED-I-BLE! That was the most amazing sauce I've *ever* had on a sandwich before. Do not order online from here, they will take no responsibility for missing an item. I just ordered a a country fried steak that comes with hashbrown, eggs, and bread. The main dish (country fried steak) was not included in my order. I called Bianca which is the only person working there with the cook. She clearly stated "It's out of my control". What a great place to study! Went there a couple weeks ago for the first time (in awhile) on a Sunday night around 10pm . There was a plenty of room to sit, and I was able to find an outlet too. I guess its open till 12am everyday? I ordered a 12oz vanilla latte, which was not too bad. I think it really dependson the barista, of course, and I'd have to say that I've had better. Don't get food to go here. The food was ok and would have gotten 3-3.5 stars. However, I got my order to-go because I was heading to work. As I waited I start seeing foods being served constantly, and eventually 3-4 customers who came in after me were getting their food. So I asked the waitress what is happening and she went in the kitchen to ask them, then I just sat there seeing more dishes being served to people after me.
