It's been years since my last visit to Cafe Picasso but after a pretty perfect Father's Day dinner, it might just become a new regular spot. What's not to love? Amazing food cozy white table cloth space (but still massive) great service. Oh! And BYOB. Nothing to not love. The stand out app was the Contadina alla Nonna: Sauteed broccoli rabe and sweet Italian sausage in a light garlic white wine sauce. This one surprised me with how incredible it was. The sausage was sweet and soaked up all the garlicky flavor in the sauce. This was a favorite of mine and I don't normally love sausage dishes. We also got the clams which I couldn't help but devour. The bread basket was used almost entirely to soak up the sauce of this dish. This menu was gigantic. There's at least 10 options under every category, and everything looks wonderful. After much deliberation, I got the lobster ravioli (from the main menu, no the special menu) and loved it. The creamy sauce, the flavorful ravioli. They had a special with lots of other seafood, but I was happy with my simpler dish. Will be back the next time a pasta/Italian food craving hits. This is a great looking restaurant with some dishes done very well. Stay away from the lasagna though. You'd get alot better quality and value buying a Walmart brand frozen one and making it yourself. The service was subpar at best, but again understandable. I came here with my boyfriend because I heard a lot of good things about this restaurant. They have a metered public parking lot across the street and down about a block on the opposite side. There is limited street parking. If you come with someone handicapped it's best to drop them off in front and then go park. Cafe Picasso has some outdoor seating. Upon entering I noticed a Gelato case with several different kinds of gelato in it, and a dessert case with a delicious assortment of cakes and goodies. Then as you walk towards the dining room you have an Expresso/ Cappuccino Bar with some seating. Cafe Picasso has some unique decor with warm and cozy feel to it. They have ornate high back chairs and on the walls they have different types of paintings. We were seated up front across from the open aired kitchen. It was really cool being able to watch Chef Carlos preparing everyone's food. I was very impressed with the staff, especially my waiter Mason. He has been working here for 15 years along with Brandon our server. Both were very well trained, attentive,and very knowledgeable. All the staff work together to make this place run very cohesive and smooth.Cafe Picasso is a BYOB Restaurant. I started with Frittura Di Calamari- Lightly breaded and fried calamari served with sweet marinara sauce. The Calamari was light and very good. The marinara had wonderful flavor and was a nice accompaniment. Next came a House Salad that was lightly dressed. We were also served hot bread with dipping oil. For my entree I chose Pollo Alessandra- Pan seared chicken breast with sun dried tomatoes, shitake mushrooms and portobello mushrooms topped with fresh mozzarella finished in a marsala demiglaze sauce.( my pic doesn't do justice bc too much grated cheese was sprinkled on it.) My dish was delicious and the presentation was uniquely displayed. My boyfriend chose for his Entree Pollo Marsala- Pan seared chicken breast with shitake musfrooms, porcini mushrooms and cremini mushrooms finished in a homemade marsala demiglaze sauce. He really enjoyed his meal. We were both stuffed so we didn't order dessert. I did order a Cappuccino and it was really good and made well. Cafe Picasso has two rooms they can host a party. One room can accommodate 36 people. The other room can accommodate 50. Call ahead to book and get info. One of the owner's Lorenzo came over and asked how everything was. I loveddd the ambiance of this restaurant- it was like Picasso Roman gothic with the dim lights, fixtures and paintings and it was truly not like any other Italian restaurant I've been to interior wise. The food was next level, but next time I will DEFINITELY be cutting down on the spice level lol. I asked for my dish to be medium on the spicy scale and I felt like my mouth was burning off when I bit into one of the peppers, so that was my fault. Now I know for next time! The calamari appetizer was very good--tender with nice crisp coating. Chicken cacciatore entree was disappointing. Menu said the dish was supposed to have bell peppers in it which is usually a standard flavor in cacciatore that I really looked forward to. NO bell peppers to be found. Instead there were string beans, carrots potatoes and zucchini and one piece of broccoli! There was an excess of oil around the edges of the dish. At least the chicken breast filet in it was tender and the portion was large. The decaf latte was good in a nice big cup. Cannoli cake for dessert was terrible. The fruit with it was not fresh. The small cannoli on the side was soggy with coagulated creme inside. Probably won't be returning to this restaurant. read more

Their menu has a lot of options, and they had a full page of specials. We ordered some appetizers to share, and my favorite was the rice ball trio which was on their specials. For my meal, I had veal Marsala over angel hair. It was good, but not my favorite because it was very salty. My wife said her food was very rich (seafood and vodka sauce). Service was very quick. I had the chicken Venesiana that was supposed to be with onions and peppers but came out as a smattering of small chicken chunks with yellow squash and green beans - I hate both of those. The worst part was this gloppy brown over salty sour balsamic sauce - everything was swimming in it. My plate was all sauce and not much else. Waiter never checked on us during the meal and at the end just took the full plates away without saying a word. We were seated in a cubby area that was cramped and hot and seemed a bit grimy. Very disappointing. This place used to be good - seems like they better monitor the kitchen that has totally gone amuck. The food was less than remotely acceptable. Paid the expensive bill and left without anyone uttering a word to us. It was a special night for us, so I chose not to complain to not detract from just enjoying each others company. It doesn't get any better than this. On a Saturday evening I managed to get a table without a reservation. You get yourself a front row preview of the kitchen and the assembly line. As you're walking to the table, you get a nice wonderful aroma from the kitchen. It is BYOB with a liquor store right next door. The gentleman putting the dishes together on line is passionate about what he does. It's great to see the staff having fun and enjoying what they do. I couldn't stop staring at each dish that was being sent out to each table. It is a bit pricey, but you get a salad with each main course you order. As far as the food, there wasn't anything I didn't eat that didn't disappoint me. We had the fried mozzarella with the robust tomato sauce as an appetizer. I had the Mahi Mahi and the girlfriend had linguini with clams. All three were delicious and I couldn't put the fork down. It's great to know this place is as authentic as it gets. My go-to Italian restaurant always used to Be Alfonso's; however, recently my friend got a new job and we wanted to celebrate and decided to treat ourselves to a fancier Italian dinner! We did not; however, they were super nice enough to squeeze us in! When we first walked in, it was slightly empty but as the night progressed we could tell the restaurant was getting busier with people. They don't personally serve alcohol, which is interesting because they have wine bottles in front of the restaurant but I guess as decoration. It's strictly BYOB here but there is a liquor store right next to Cafe Picasso (TBH not my fave liquor store but not relevant to this review)! What I LOVE about Cafe Picasso is that they serve a ton of bread AND garlic knots -- as a huge garlic knot fan, that was a pleasant surprise to see that come as a free appetizer! They have a decent menu and pasta offerings! They also have a long list of specials! I went for the Linguine Vongole because that's my go-to and it was a hearty serving! I also just love how the dishes are presented here -- every dish was just so beautiful! This place is super expensive and a great Italian restaurant to treat yourself to if you want a more fancier experience! However, I did deduct one star because I did feel rushed. The waiter kept coming asking if I was done and if she could just pack my food as I was still eating. They also were pushing real hard to get us out and we didn't even finish our wine and they threw out our cork so they had to try to find a random cork to fit into our wine bottle! read more

The complimentary bread was pretty good although it almost seemed as if it wasn't baked enough. But it's complimentary so can't really complain too much there. Entree wise we got shrimp fra dialvo. Very good! And veal parm, also good. The not so great: the service and price. The service was a bit slow and not very helpful/attentive. Extremely long gaps between the waiter coming over to take the order or check on us. The price of the food is expensive in general. To be fair the portions are big but ultimately I don't know if it justify the cost. This restaurant was good, I wouldn't say amazing, but it was like a 8/10. They served bread with olive oil. Olive oil had bira for fresh garlic in and dried basil in it. The garlic knots and bread were cold. The bread was dry and the garlic knots were really oily. When I ate the garlic knots, there was a gush of oil in my mouth. My dish was the chicken/ sausage and I added pasta to it as well. They served boiled broccoli, zucchini, carrots and half a red potatoe on the side. Originally it was suppose to be in the dish but because I added the pasta to it they put the veggies on the side. It was very oily as well and way to salty!!! I had to manage to eat it. My husband got the rigatoni alla genovese (picture not posted) and it was better because the salt was perfect in it. He had added chicken to it along with the sausage that already came with it. The portion size was huge so we had enough to take home for lunch the next day. The servers were amazing, nice, welcoming, and didn't hurry us. Our server explained the menu and was really helpful and gave us all the time so we could pick what we wanted. I would go back again but order something different. This meal was picked up and ready a few minutes after arriving. They had an extensive menu with the Italian classics along with a few twists. The date night deal was purchased ($52.75 for an appetizer, 2 entrees, and a dessert). They also gave plenty of bread including garlic knots, which were a little doughy. The bread was the preferred choice. For an appetizer, the antipasto misto was ordered. It came with prosciutto, soppressata, mortadella, mozzarella, provolone, roasted red peppers, tomatoes and olives. It was all very fresh and appetizing. There was a good amount of each component as well. I had the veal alla DeLuca. It consisted of a veal cutlet stuffed with prosciutto, fontina cheese, ground sausage in a brandy pink sauce. It also came with vegetables, no complaints regarding those. The veal was very good. This also came with a house salad, no complaints there. The cutlet was stuffed just right, not too much or too little. I really liked the combination of the fontina and ground sausage. I did really get a taste of the prosciutto because of the sausage and the cheese. The sauce went well with the whole dish. For dessert, the bananarama cake was ordered. It was a vanilla cake with a banana filing and chocolate. There was a strong banana flavoring here, but the combination of the chocolate and banana filing made for a pleasant ending to a great meal. Went to Cafe Picasso with a large group. The rooms were a little dark, but pleasant, with entertaining prints of Picasso paintings on the walls... as per the name. The Menu was quite extensive and perhaps even overambitious. The Service was fine, with no complaints. However, instead of separate checks, every 4 persons were combined on one check. Whether due to laziness or some technical issue, that seemed unnecessary and strange, at least to me. I had the Isalalta Picasso, which was listed as: "Spring Mix Lettuce Tossed - Served with dried cranberries, sliced almonds and Gorgonzola cheese topped with grilled sea scallops and finished in a balsamic and olive oil dressing." The lettuce and dressing were fine and as expected. However, I couldn't find the gorgonzola cheese at all and there were only 3, small, lonely scallops buried under the lettuce. The 3 scallops were more rubbery than I would have liked... and all for just $21! A simple (and cheaper) salad would have been as good or better. One companion had the minestrone soup, which he said was fine. (Hard to mess that up.) Another person had a grilled vegetable sandwich with french fries, which she was not crazy about. Others seemed to like their food, but I did not press them for details. The quantity of food on all plates looked to be more than sufficient. On balance, the food was really nothing special, especially compared to other Italian restaurants in the larger area, and there is a lot of competition. Perhaps because it's situated in Somerville, competition isn't really a factor for local residents, but it would be for me. I would rate the food from mediocre to somewhat disappointing. Perhaps other menu items were better, so maybe give the place a try for yourself. Three stars is probably generous on my part, but since I won't be going back there any time soon, I'll give them the benefit of some doubt. read more

I was very disappointed. My dessert-banana rama was good as was the latte. Now for the really negative aspect of dinner. We were seated next to the open kitchen. We had to shout over the noise emanating from there. Clanging pots, pounding, spoons hitting the side of pots - it was awful. You cannot have a nice relaxing meal with that noise going on right next to you. I suggest you seat people away from there before you stick someone in that line of tables. There needs to be a barrier put up between the kitchen and those tables lined up against it. We ended up taking dessert with us because we couldn't take the noise any more. When I got home I discovered my lonely piece of cake in the container without the whipped cream and berries that it came with on the plate! Yes, the service is lacking. The portions are good, the taste was very bland. The red sauce is very tasteless, and the corrozza were very soft (normally crispy brown) . I don't normally mind big price tags for food because its how life is these days. I just expect more flavor for what I'm getting and their red sauce needs too change drastically because I'm being honest, it seemed like very well blended tomato paste and water. No salt no pepper no garlic. Update: someone responded and with a terrible answer lol. My wife and I went on a Wednesday night for a 5:30 seating. Only one other table was seated when we arrived. We sat in the front of the restaurant which was a bit noisy because of a nearby TV. We both ordered Chicken soup to start and after about 10 minutes only my soup was brought to the table; it took them 15 minutes to correct their mistake which was annoying to say the least. The soup was very good however. At this point more diners began to arrive and the restaurant got quite noisy. We both ordered veal dishes which were generously portioned and came with a small salad. Our opinion in the end was that the restaurant was a bit too noisy for us and the food as well as the service just average. We expected more and were somewhat disappointed. Ordered takeout via another website. When I arrived my order was ready (earlier than estimated) and packed in a big sturdy box. It was a small order (2 dinners) but I appreciated the sturdy box and not having to deal with different shaped containers potentially tipping over inside of a plastic bag. Chicken Francese was better than expected. A large serving of golden brown chicken (easily enough for 2 people) was bathed in buttery, lemony sauce. A small serving of pasta or rice would be my preferred pairing for all the sauce, but we got several pieces of bread (again, way more than necessary for only 2 dinners) and garlic bread with the meals. Spaghetti carbonara...where to begin. Let me start with the portion - monstrous. Easily enough for two people to have a serving. Lots of spaghetti but they don't skimp on the pancetta either. Plenty of porky goodness for every bite. I try never to critique a recipe as "non-traditional" because everybody has their own take and "tradition" is an artificial construct anyway, so I'll just say "This dish isn't carbonara, but it is carbonara adjacent." It tasted pretty good but the egg-based sauce was definitely scrambled a bit. A few reviews commented on the price. Eh, it's probably not the best value in Somerville. You could probably get every dish on the menu at a decent diner, but then you wouldn't be in downtown Somerville, would you? I think I would have appreciated the food more if I had eaten in the restaurant. They are open for dining. I think they have taken a few tables away but if you are averse to crowded spaces in the dark times™, it's probably not the right place for you. read more

I saw a deal on Facebook and I'm do surprised no one has mentioned this so far on Yelp, but Cafe Picasso has a deal on Thursday nights from 4-9pm called "Date Night." It includes an appetizer, two salads, bread and garlic knots, whatever two entrees, two coffees, and a dessert from a huge list of options for a grand total of $53. Everything was delicious and the portions are huge! The garlic knots are especially to die for. All packaged so nicely in a great to go back. We will for sure be back. read more

Ordered a shrimp pasta dish Very greasy. I had a $50 gift card from my birthday last August- they refused to accept it. Called the manager over - they said the gift card was old and they don't use those gift cards anymore. No expiration date on the card ?! What?? They offered us $25 off but we complained and they finally gave us the $50 off Needless to say - won't go there again. Waitress was also nasty. Finally made it here for some dinner on a Tuesday evening after hearing many glowing recommendations from my fellow YELP friends. We got a nice table for 2 on their patio that overlooks downtown Somerville. We were started off with a lovely bread basket that had some delicious garlic knots and some other assorted bread. We had the fried calamari for the starter and it was very tasty fried to a delicious golden brown and served with lemon as well as a hot and a sweet marinara sauce which were both great. We then enjoyed our tossed salads with a nice dressing that are served with the entrees. For the main course we ordered the Rigatoni alla vodka and the Flounder with risotto. I really enjoyed my pasta dish, the vodka sauce was very flavorful and the pasta was cooked perfectly. I'm told the fish was also excellent and the risotto was very tasty. The portions are very generous so we both had leftovers to bring home. The service was excellent and everyone was very friendly and attentive. Plus on Monday and Tuesday they have a half price pasta special so my dinner was half price. I'm very happy my friends recommended this restaurant and we definitely plan to return.
