The food here is very delicious and authentic. We ordered three different dishes and despite it being take-out only were very impressed. The older gentleman who owns the business was super helpful. Wish I'd read some of the other reviews about this restaurant before I came, but I've been wanting to try it for so long, when I got a chance I leapt for it! My dining companions, Captain Pickypants and the Mayonnaise Avenger, are not as adventuresome as I might hope, so when I saw that the menu didn't give descriptions on the various dishes I was relieved when I saw Chicken Teriyaki and Chicken Yakisoba on the menu. We decided to play it safe and go with the aforementioned dishes in the $7 lunch specials. My first thought was, "Heyyyy I didn't know Teriyaki and Yakisoba were Korean dishes, I thought it was just a Chinese thing!" I rationalized that maybe this was the Korean version of same. Nope- the teriyaki and yakisoba are deliciously generic food safe for the less epicurians palates. Salty, sweet, familiar, and not at all what I was hoping for. My fault. I see reviews demanding that people who have only tried these dishes remove their reviews immediately. No. Here's why: These are dishes this restaurant serves. They are a part of the restaurant's repertoire. They're on the main drag in a whitebread city. These dishes are, I daresay, what many first-timers are going to order. Maybe they, like me, will go next time and ask for the chef's recommendations Presentation was lovely. Side dish was rice. Meal included a fountain soda. No frills. Service was, as others have noted, brusque. There was one person working the counter, serving, and clearing. Cultural or not, brusque is brusque. I'm rating this through my lens, not what is culturally acceptable or normal in a region which I will never see. ;) The gentleman was not rude in any way, just very busy and clearly edging on overwhelmed. We were allotted one napkin per person and served forks. There were no additional napkins on the table near the back, which had soy sauce and chili paste. We were not given the choice of chopsticks, or checked up on at any point during the meal. We asked about straws for our drinks. Lids, yes, straws, no. "No straws!" he replied as he bustled past. Have never been here even though I've been living in Eugene for 4 years or so..and I was shocked! I've tried a lot of Korean food in Oregon--in Portland, Beaverton and Eugene--and this restaurant is in my top 3 best places to go for Korean food! I ordered spicy beef soup and most places give a little bit of beef and toppings but this place, gave me plenty! Love it! Will come back again soon!! Although there's a limited selection of lunch specials, they serve some pretty tasty beef bulgogi and chicken yakisoba for $6.50 (includes a drink). I know, who orders yakisoba at a Korean place, right? That's what I thought until I tried it for myself. It doesn't taste like the traditional Japanese yakisoba. I typically get Soft Tofu Hot Pot. It is comparable to the delicious scalding hot soups I've had in Los Angeles. I've talked with a lot of people who have eaten here and everyone seems to really like the food and friendly service. This is a local family run restaurant that serves quick, nourishing, inexpensive meals. Super convenient to the University and downtown. Parking is always fairly easy. read more

Beef glass noodle (galbee tang) soup is my favorite soup in EUGENE! He don't smile very often but he is definately a nice guy.

The place has been here a long time but we just got around to trying it after a long walk on a very warm afternoon. Most of the customers were Korean college students and they ordered at the counter but the old man waved us to a table and took our order there--maybe because we are senior citizens and so get special treatment. My Bi Bim Bap came in a. large metal bowl that contained pieces of marinated beef (maybe 3 oz.?), a fried egg, fresh cucumber, carrots, turnip and been sprouts. The sides were a bowl of rice, kimchi, bean sprouts and cucumber with chili flakes. The kimchi tasted like it had be fermented, unlike other kimchi I have had in the USA. All the food except the rice was. cold, which was good for a hot day. There was hot tea on a side table and the usual soda dispenser. The food was very good and I didn't add the hot sauce but did use some sesame seed oil. My companion got a huge plate of chicken and noodles that she said tasted "ordinary." I see reviewers found the owner grumpy; apparently we were their on one of his good days. read more

We've eaten far better Korean food in Portland, Tucson, Spokane, Longview, Kansas City, Seattle... hell, Airway Heights, Washington. Honestly, just about every Korean restaurant meal I've ever had was better than this one. That said, the rice cakes were nicely spicy and I liked the chewy texture (unlike my date, who found them gluey). The fish cake was of lower quality and faintly gritty between my teeth. My husband chose tofu, kimchi, and pork belly. The kimchi was pretty sour, the pork belly had been sadly boiled until any delicious fatty unctuousness was long gone. The tofu was good and I thought the sauce was very savory and tasty. He remained unimpressed. The offering of banchan was, well, sad. Four or five chopsticked morsels of three things, none of them outstanding: fish cake, bean sprouts, and more of the very sour kimchi. I have only been offered such a paltry selection in one other place, also in Eugene. Those of you defending the food must never have been served a dozen little, different, artful, delicious garnishes (candied lotus! chili-sweet tiny anchovies! oi namul! daikon two ways! savory cold potato shreds!), with the ones you particularly like refilled as often as you want. You must never have had the real Korean rice and the corn and barley tea. The poor people toiling in this windowless basement kitchen must have forgotten more about Korean food than I could ever hope to learn, but forget it they have. Or at least they've settled for (far) less. We were ready to order at the counter when the owner thrust menus at us and bid us sit down. After the reviews I had read, this move was unexpected. And after giving our order, at the table, I was asked to pay up front. Okay. This mom-and-pop sits next to campus; indeed, it was filled with Asian students speaking at least four languages over plates of food. They all got the order-at-counter treatment. With the number of dine-and-dash guests I bet he has had over the years, it's probably the soundest approach for him. It also means he can take as long as he needs to, but give the owner a break -- he and the missus are exhausted! Have you ever run a lunch and dinner service five days a week with two people? I cook for a living (about two blocks from this joint) and I shudder to think of the hours they must put in. And yeah, he's direct, and I suspect he puts up with no crap -- but since we didn't offer any beyond some spilled tea, and there isn't even a tip line on the credit card form (though there is a jar for unauditable cash), we gave them the benefit of the doubt. This is a great place for homesick Korean students to get homestyle food. But we won't likely return. It's a shame the only real competition they have is one of those over-the-top grill-in-the-table places. read more

If you are writing reviews about this place after eating teriyaki chicken or yakisoba....please take them DOWN! That is not Korean food. Teriyaki chicken is not even Japanese! It originated in Hawaii (that's freakin AMERICA). Like chop suey is not Chinese food but American food invented by Chinese Americans for the american palate! I think it's a very important question to ask: if a white restaurant owner were declining to serve black people or intentionally provided worse service to blacks, would I want to support that restaurant? I don't usually open my reviews with such weighty questions, as most of the time we just want to know if a restaurant is good or bad. In this case, whether or not the restaurant is good or bad depends upon your race--and in the U.S. there should be no question about whether or not this is acceptable. I'll open by pointing out if you want Korean food without the excessive wait and with much nicer treatment, you might want to try Cafe Ari Rang, and Maru, both of which are on Franklin, about 5 minutes from Cafe Seoul. The elderly couple who own and run Cafe Ari Rang are incredibly nice and make all their own kimchee (several types) on site. They also make a fantastic beef bone broth soup that chases away winter colds like nothing else. Cafe Ari Rang is also a great example that a 2 person gig run by a married couple from Korea doesn't have to include racism in the business model. Maru does Korean table barbecue, and serves a variety of simple dishes and sushi--so while it may not speak to the purist, it's still a pleasant environment. Before going to Cafe Seoul, I read many of the reviews and noted several trends--for those who were from Korea or had lived in Korea Cafe Seoul provided a taste of home. For those who were perhaps Chinese, they could prepare to be actively discriminated against if they wanted to eat. I'm Hispanic, my daughter is multi-racial. I thought perhaps since we weren't Asian at all, that maybe the prejudicial service might not be an issue, butI had prepared my daughter for the possibility that this might not go well. When we arrived and went to the counter to read the menu and order, I was pleasantly suprised to see the owner at the counter. When I turned to him to try to place an order he promptly turned his back and walked to a wall to look at something, then behind a flimsy divider. We waited about 10 minutes. He "faux peeked" a couple of times, as the line behind us grew. At 15 minutes I realized it was pretty silly, that I could think of any number of places to go to where we could get good food and be treated civilly if not pleasantly. I also realized the people behind me might not get to order anytime soon if I persisted. I have no clue if race is a factor or not, but the real question should be this: do you want to support a restaurant where that is even a factor? For reviewers commenting that perhaps we all sit too much, shouldn't act snooty, etc. I appreciate that you have that perspective--and you are totally ok with a business owner who singles out Chinese people? Because if that was a white business owner treating black would-be patrons that way, I can't help but think you would call that out in a heartbeat. In the future we will go to Cafe Ari Rang or Maru. Quite frankly the best and most authentic Korean Restaurant in town. I lived in Korea for 2 years, so I was desperate. I didn't have much hope for this place when I first walked in as it looked run down and there weren't many patrons. The first time I order Twaejang jigae, and I nearly cried because of how amazing it was and it tasted just like what I remembered. I'm looking forward to winter again to try to kimchi jige - I just can't eat soup in the summer. Their dolsat (hot clay bowl) bibimbap (mixed rice) is amazing and I can't stop ordering it. A couple of notes - 1.) as the family who owns this restaurant are in fact Korean, they haven't hired help, and that's completely normal in Korea and Korean culture. It is literally just a husband and wife duo with some kitchen help. The husband is really the only person who takes orders and serves. This makes service sometimes quite slow, and this restaurant really can get very busy. My boyfriend and I literally waited 20 minutes to order once and waited another hour just to get our food. 2.) The owners aren't necessarily friendly. Overall, I really do like this place, but I really think they need a better location and more staff. read more

This is one of my favorite places here in Eugene and something I'll definitely miss once I graduate in a few months. If you can get past the owner's gruff service, you'll find he's actually very nice if he's not being swamped by the number of international students who eat here. Best of all, the food is great! Sometimes at off hours, you can meet the chef, who is the owner's wife. I have tried everything from their Bulgogi, Galbitang, Dol Sot Bi Bim Bap, Dukboki, to dishes whose names I cannot pronounce. One of my favorites is a stir-fried dish of pork belly, kimchi, and tofu which was recommended to me. Yes, so I come to this place for the food....not necessarily for service or atmosphere. The main reason, I did not give this place a 5 is because, sometimes it's hard to get the extra side dishes/refills. I feel that that should be standard (at least for a Korean restaurant) if the place is "as good as it gets". read more

This remains my favorite Korean place around campus. As far as I'm concerned they have the best Dolsot Bi Bim Bap in town, and my husband loves the Kim Chi rice. My single biggest gripe is that they removed the Korean Sushi from the menu. I'm not sure why they did, since it used ingredients that I think are all in bibimbap as well, and I found it absolutely amazing. If they put this back on the menu, I'd eat here every week. My husband loves Cafe Seoul because of the wide variety of Korean dishes, and the above average level of spiciness. Overall, service is good, and the couple that owns it has always been very nice to us. The guy once freaked me out a little by putting a HUGE amount of Gochujang (red sauce) on my bibimbap. I honestly thought he'd have made it inedible, until I tasted it and realized Gochujang isn't very spicy at all haha. The bibimbap was perfect. Other than that: Free tea, small booths for privacy (not super comfortable, as they're wooden booths), and free parking. This is definitely one of the better lunch spots around campus. read more

I understand he was busy, but the restaurant is not even half full. Because most of the menu is in Korean, so when it was my turn, i walked up and try to ask about the menu. He just looked at with annoyed face, "how many people." I asked if the crab stew is made with real crab and if it has vegetables. He said, "i dont know!" HE SAID I DONT KNOW! he is the owner of the restaurant and he doesnt know! then i ask if he has any other seafood stew. He just gave me a menu and ask to step aside! he cant even answer me one simple question!!!!! i said "never mind" and walked out of the door. Café Seoul is a little spot next to a Subway on Franklin boulevard. The food here is absolutely wonderful. Everything on the menu goes above and beyond! Best soups in town, their Dolsok Babimbap is out of this world. My personal favorite is spicy tofu hot pot with egg drop. This is my favorite Korean restaurant ever. But.. The service is horrid. So. Bad. Café Seoul is owned by an elderly man and his wife. The husband takes orders, busses, and serves while his wife does all of the cooking. They have a few dish washers but that's it. Anyways! My girlfriend and I will come here regularly because of how amazing their food is. I always sense some prejudice though. He will seriously walk by me if I have my hand raised to another table. I will wave him down and after ten minutes of trying to get his attention, he only responds to "!" (Yogiyo!) which is Korean for excuse me. While trying to get his attention he will go to the Koreans with a smile on his face but soon as he gets to my girlfriend and I, BAM, he has a rad snarl on his face and dreads getting me some more kimchi. This happened every single time. It's very uncomfortable. Even with this horrid service.. I come back. And I come back often. The food is too good not to. But I shall never leave a tip. read more

Food is pricey for what you get. I like the location of this place; its so close to school. However, I'm not too impressed with this place at all because the food is eh, and the service is very ridged. Granted the couple that owns the place is potentially super sweet, I just get this really rushed vibe and I don't really like it. Not to mention if you order anything other than what's on the lunch menu, it'll cost you a hand and a leg. I'm serious. Anyway, I like the convenience of this place, but it's nothing special and pretty steep in terms of price. Also, I remember when I first saw this place I was excited because it's a Korean place and close to school. My favorite Korean restaurant in town. It's tiny and hidden under the Hirons. If you come during prime lunch or dinner hours you may have to wait for a table, it fills up fast. Your dish will probably take a bit, just enjoy some of the tea and wait because what comes out will be really good. They have great dolsot bibimbap, and the spicy squid is good too, super spicy. I recently tried the sam syup bol and found it good as well, but I couldn't finish it as the portion was huge. Reminds me of Korea and I can't wait to explore more of the menu. read more

Okay I rarely try to leave my fellow Korean compadres a low star rating, but WTF?! This place has terribly rude service!! I don't care how good the food is; there is absolutely no reason to be rude to customers who aren't doing anything but trying to order food! My bf and I came in for dinner around 6PM and stood around for about 5 minutes waiting for someone to take our order at the cash register; I don't think we came in anywhere close to closing hours. So, we finally order and the old man taking our order is extremely grumpy and just rude! I tried to ask him a simple question about the menu since I'm unable to eat certain foods, but he grumbles something in Korean and tells me to look at the menu. UHHHH HELLO??? I can see and read the menu (both in Korean and English I'd like to point out!!) and it does not specify the ingredients????? What if I had a death allergy?! I even heard the old man tell a group of customers to "SHH" for laughing and talking loudly like my god... why are you so grumpy.... Anyways, as for the food.. my bf liked it. He ordered the Soon Tofu which I thought was pretty okay. I guess I would consider it authentic. My dish, however, was just ridiculous. I ordered the Kimchi Dolsot (hot stone). I literally got a hot stone full of white rice, kimchi, mushrooms, and carrot. Where the hell else was the veggies that traditionally goes in bibimbap?! Why am I eating just rice and kimchi?!
