Their decor could use a boost, but this place fills a much-needed Old City niche for reasonably-priced, healthy, flavourful lunches made with fresh ingredients. I'm not sure how I missed this place when I started working in the neighborhood a year ago. I usually bring my lunch to work (mainly because there are so few decent places to eat in the area). The times I don't have my lunch can be traumatic because the options are limited and pretty terrible (unless you like Cosi or paying way too much at Red Owl Tavern). Had a well constructed salad - fresh and not drowning in dressing - that I was able to order online and pick up within 15 minutes. With a great lunchtime take out option like this, I will definitely be okay coming to work lunchless. Should note that the only reason I didn't give them 5 stars was their website wasn't super current and I ordered a salad option that wasn't on their current menu. Small hole in the wall cafe with a friendly atmosphere. All the staff are polite and quick with orders. Food is delicious and very reasonably priced. If you're in the area, I recommend the italian and cubano melt for lunch. Breakfast is up to you. read more

The menu is on the wall and you go up to the counter to order.  Nice selection of items, such as wraps, lox, eggs and avocado toast, very reasonable prices. We then sat down at one of the few tables to wait for our orders.  The table, the floor, the windows, the napkin holders all looked like they hadn't been cleaned or wiped in years. We had already ordered the food so we stayed, but the atmosphere was a major turn off. When the food came after a long wait it was all actually very good. Great sandwich! I had the Chicken Sandwich and liked it a lot. It had grilled chicken, avocado and bacon on it so it's hard to mess up a sandwich when those great ingredients get together lol The deli itself is small with seating for only about a dozen patrons. Based on my research, Cafe Square One seemed to offer a coffee shop atmosphere while having a menu of items that one could make a meal out of. Most local coffee shops tend to just have pastries, yogurt and granola, and other things less substantial. The day I went I was hungry, yet had a lot of work to do, so cafe square one seemed like an obvious choice. My experience wasn't bad, but I also wasn't impressed. I had the cubano panini, which was cheap, but was on par with what I get at au bon pain at the airport (curiously named the "cubano"). The seating area is limited, and if its cold, the opening and shutting of the door nearby makes things a bit uncomfortable. The redeeming quality was the price and the speed with which my sandwich was made. Although, I'm having a hard time justifying that as a reason for me to give this place another shot. read more

Took an early morning stroll from the Hotel Monaco looking for breakfast and stopped in after seeing the sign outside. Walked in and the room had an immediate warm, cozy and friendly vibe with an easy to read menu on the wall. I ordered an egg sandwich and coffee, both of which were very good. Service was friendly and gracious. I would love to come back to try some of the other items on the menu, for breakfast or lunch. Awesome!!! We got many things to split between 2 adults and 2 kids. The bagels were packed with toppings - our kids were messy from the melty Nutella and cream cheese! My husbands egg and avocado sandwich was great. I got the oatmeal with mashed bananas which was also topped with berries, honey & nuts. It was delicious and the right tasty yet healthy breakfast I needed. They have dozens of espresso drinks listed on their wall. For a bite to eat while checking out the historic sites like The Liberty Bell and Independence Hall, this is a great choice. It was a tight fit during the lunch rush but the line moved quickly and it wasn't difficult to find a seat. The amount of food you get for the price is incredible. I shared my Cubano Panini with my 4 year old and we still didn't finish it. My husband raved about the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and also couldn't finish his. It traces back to a simple issue, they do not respect their customers so they understaff their locations to the point they cannot service their clientele properly. Cafe Square One was opened two or three years ago by a group of what I surmise were recent Drexel grads (I could be wrong). I wish some of Philly's professional chefs (or maybe the overly pretentious coffee shop steps north of them on 3rd St) would take some lessons from how it's run. (Yeah, I'm talking to you, Menagerie). I live in the neighborhood and drop in a few times a month for breakfast (ham, egg & cheese on a sesame bagel -- can't go wrong) or lunch (try the spicy chicken salad). There is a huge blackboard menu of sandwiches but the best thing about the place is that the staff seem to be completely dedicated to good service and good food. Seriously? Do not understand all the rave reviews, just attempted to eat the Chipotle Chicken Wrap that was swimming in inedible hot saucey mayo. Expected a little bit of smoky heat from the description, but this was ridiculous. And if you're going to give me bacon, don't give me bacon bits, that's just rude. Threw out more than half the sandwich, couldn't even pick through the darn thing, pissed I spent 9 bucks on it.
