This is a nice little coffee and tea shop. A colleague introduced me and I've been back a few times. They have a nice selection of teas, including several types of green tea, which I really appreciate. They use loose leaf and give you your own little pot that is about 2-cups of tea. The girl behind the counter with tattoos all over her arms and neck is extremely rude.She was extremely hostile to me and my companion for no apparent reason.She caused my mothers blood pressure to rise from banging the coffee cups and mugs on the counter because she was frustrated at our indecisiveness.We won't even drive down that street anymore.Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. read more

I have walked by this cafe for over five years and today I took the plunge. Wow, have I been missing out. The moment I walked in I was sad I didn't bring in any hang out materials. The smell of coffee, bacon and family pictures on the wall casually tapped my senses as if to say...I told you so. But in a polite way if course. I ordered a soy mocha and the breakfast plate of over medium eggs, chix apple sausage and English muffin. My eggs were made to perfection, my soy mocha delectably chocolatey...I enjoyed the diversity of the patrons and appreciated the familiarity of the employees who treated everyone as an old friend who came in for a visit and wanting to feed their souls with good food and good coffee. This morning was my first time here and I was very impressed. All of their breakfast items are under $10. I had the BLT and it was very yummy and priced at $6.95. Actually I think all of the sandwiches in general were under $10 but I'm not certain. Anyways the only thing I didn't like was having to pay extra for coffee refill. The only reason I bring it up is because I usually never carry cash. Otherwise I am definitely returning and bring change for my coffee refills!!! read more

Caffe Trieste makes good coffee, always had a decent selection of pastries to choose from, makes good hot plates in its kitchen for all meals and, most importantly, serves beer and wine. I'm super excited about having a new spot on Piedmont Ave for desserts and hot drinks. I've lived in the neighborhood for almost 10 years and I can't tell you how tired I am of the grungy vibe at Gaylord's. It once took 10 minutes just to get a cup of tea b/c the counter staff was busy gabbing. Tried a spiced milk and the tiramisu on Friday and both were great. The rest of the cold pastry case looked fantastic too. My only issue here is that I wish the pastries on the counter had glass covering the front of the case too....not sure if this is designed to even be self-service, but I'm not keen on the idea of all kinds of hands and faces being able to touch and breathe on everything laid out on the counter. I love this cafe! I've had the lasagne, spaghetti & meatballs, zucchini bread and soups. Everything, but everything, was delicious and inexpensive. The service is great. I'm so glad they don't have WiFi, since so many cafes on Piedmont Ave. are filled with them. It is my very favorite place to go for a bite, to people watch, or to read a book. read more

I totally love this place. Was looking for a place to sit in out of the hot sun while waiting for an appointment at the spa down the street. But hell, I still drink coffee, even when its hot out. As I took my sunglasses off, adjusted my eyes to the lighting inside, and wiped a few beads of sweat from my brow, the menu board came into view. Latte, Cappucino, Breve, Mocha... wait! BREVE?!?! That's right ladies and gents. And I bet you don't even know what a breve is. No one does. I moved to The Bay 6 months ago from Seattle, and not once have I found a coffee shop where even ONE barista knows what the HELL a Breve is! I was excited, to say the least. I ordered a medium one, and a drip coffee for the boyfriend. Sat outside and drank it, and it was just as wonderful as I'd hoped. Barista complimented me on my tattoo. She said it was "fresh". I shall never again have a spa day without first dropping by Trieste for a breve, and to leave the pretty ladies behind the counter a generous tip. read more

Cafe Trieste is exactly what a cafe should be. They've got it down. Good coffee drinks, good selection of pastries (almond croissant is delish!), good sandwiches and salads, etc. The music is existent but subdued enough to concentrate. Views from the window seats make for good Piedmont Ave people watching. Everything is right on par with what I look for. If you're in the neighborhood, give it a shot. My girlfriend and I like coming here because it's calm and a nice place to relax in the morning. They have a lot of specials like the chorizo breakfast sandwich or breakfast burrito. The name changed, but the former Caffè Trieste has not. We needed a casual dinner for my son, who had just arrived at Oakland Airport, and wanted "something Italian". So we rolled the dice and headed to one of our favorite morning spots. He was able to get a plate of delicious pasta. Been going to this place for breakfast for the past six years. Lately though the place has been going downhill-- tables rarely cleaned or bussed, tables so wobbly that drinks slop all over, servers who slam dishes down loudly and walls decorated with amazingly odd and amateurish rotating art. The whole space needs to be remodeled, updated and at the very least, steam cleaned. If we didn't like the coffee so much we would have moved on years ago. read more

Nice place with a good ambiance. I ordered the Rigatoni Bolognese for my first time there. I would not recommend it. It tasted more like pasta with roast beef. Had an hour to kill in between doctors appointments and stopped in for a quick lunch. Food was very good. I ordered an Italian sub. The bread was fresh, the meat was good, the dressing was good...what more can I say! We were full and onto our appointment within 45 minutes. I love coming here early in the morning on weekends before the crowds. Their breakfast sandwiches on a croissant are delicious and so are their pastries. Great coffee and fresh squeezed OJ. The atmosphere is warm and the staff is great. The tables are a little tight so I like to sit on the bench by the window or on the bar stools and watch the people and their dogs go up and down Piedmont Ave. A little on the pricey side but what can you do. I see that some reviewers didn't like the food or the service or both. The service was amiable, and the food was not bad at all. I had the chicken pesto pizza, and it was baked well, with a nice, thin crust that didn't have the texture of a wafer. The toppings were good...pesto, mushrooms, cubes of chicken breast. Less laptop drones than many cafes. Customers may even actually (gasp!) engage with each other. I like their chicken pesto pizza and chicken panini, both at very reasonable prices. I give this cafe an extra star for their Tuesday night live music. Three guys sing and play a fine repertoire of oldies, New Orleans, jazz, blues and folk tunes make for a delightful evening--and no cover! BTW, the three musicians are excellent, but the violinist Mads Tolling is quite exceptional, although I hesitate to give too much praise as it is already hard to find a place to sit. read more
