High XII is in Downtown Oakland, same block as the UC Office of the President. Over the years I've been there several times as a reliable lunch spot, either for their sandwiches, their salad bar (by weight) or their hot entrees and it has always been good. Their coffee is solid and I think they make their own pastries as well. Years ago they used to do donations for community causes, including ones I led, however I get that times have been tougher for small businesses the past few years. For work events, we've gotten High XII to cater breakfast platters, including coffee, breakfast sandwiches or their avocado toast. They've always been on time and fit our budget. The other day, I stopped by this cafe just before lunchtime and grabbed a Hot Pastrami sandwich to-go. The folks behind the counter worked quick to get my order ready, and I was on my way. At first I thought they didn't put enough pastrami in my sandwich. Then I realized I asked for "everything" like lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles, onion and avocado. Great presentation, and they added a little side salad. That sandwich was SO loaded, I saved half for later. Great sandwich! This place has a great location in Oakland City Center. It's on 11th street, between Broadway and Franklin. It's within a block of three major hotels- The Marriott, Marriott Courtyard, and Hampton Inn. It's across the street from the Trans-Pacific Centre. We went to this cafe on a Friday around noon for lunch. It's located right next to the Bart station and the Marriott. The place had a few customers, which was good because we were a large group. They have a great selection of food at very reasonable prices for downtown Oakland where everything seems to be marked up. The menu ranges from wraps to sandwiches to paninis. They also have a breakfast menu, and, of course, coffee. The decor is cute. The service is quick and the staff is so nice (customer service is a big one for me!). I know everyone is on edge at this time, but High XII owner, Abby and staff, Jose and Leti (my apologies for not knowing the others) are wonderful, welcoming, friendly and help to start off your morning! Everyone there I might add, is doing a great job at following CDC recommendations: face masks, gloves, markings on the floor for social distancing, touchless payment, plexi, plastic drape to protect the food, employees and the customers while being ever so friendly and respectful... Definitely adding that extra star to this review! High XII Cafe has limited their hours (Mon-Fri, 8am - 1:30pm) and menu to a few breakfast items (some Starter Bakery goodies), Verve coffee with sandwiches and salad until they get back on their feet. This place is nothing fancy but great to grab a pastry and quick bite after getting off 12th Street BART station, with a short walk around the corner onto 11th. It's called High 12 even though it's on 11th. Guess it doesn't matter much since the customers work in and around the office building it's in. I just happened upon it as I was waiting for my dental appointment. The owner was quite industrious as he was serving a robust breakfast menu by himself. I just went for the $2.50 Cafe au Lait, and that was just fine. I tried to order my favorite pastrami sandwich on ciabatta roll but order was cancelled with no reason. Totally disappointed

This review is based solely on the breakfast burrito I ordered. I got the breakfast burrito with turkey sausage and avocado (and no cheese). First, there was very little turkey sausage. To the point that I initially thought that they forgot to include it. Also, the turkey sausage had an odd flavor to it. Tasted kind of like what Veggie sausages used to taste like - kind of a chemical-y flavor. Wasn't great. The potatoes were cooked unevenly where some were undercooked. And the fillings were not spread out evenly where sometimes all I would taste is avocado or potatoes. All in all an uneven, mediocre burrito at best. They were very nice and maybe the rest of their stuff is good but purely based on the breakfast burrito, it was just meh. read more

I used to love this place; the food is good, and the customer service is great before 2 pm. I'm not sure if the hours changed, but recently, every time I've gone after 1:40ish pm, the counter seems deserted, with only the cashier at the front. Sometimes I'll just leave and assume they're no longer selling. My co-worker told me that when he asked the cashier for a sandwich, she called for another worker from the back, who looked annoyed to be called. He said that it sounded like there were more workers in the back since it was so loud. The cashier is attentive and sweet, but the other workers set a hostile feeling of wanting to get out of there as soon as possible. The place is extremely clean and the food looks and tastes fresh. Delicious coffee, friendly atmosphere and clean and welcoming environment. The gentleman at the register (didn't get his name) was extremely friendly and goes above and beyond to make you, the customer, feel welcome. I initially went in for coffee and ended up leaving with not only a delicious mocha but a filling breakfast sandwich called the "eye opener". I was craving a breakfast burrito (don't know why) and came onto Yelp looking for a place that was quick, delicious and reasonably priced. I've been in this area lots of times and never noticed this place. The place is clean, spacious and airy and the service is fast. The burrito was the perfect size, large enough to be filling but not so large that you'd have to save half for another day. I got the vegetarian option, which was a perfect blend of eggs, seasoned potatoes, avo, pico and cheese. It really hit the spot. I really wanted to like this place bc it's conveniently located in downtown Oakland and across from the Pearson Center. However, for the quality and service that I received, it's not worth the price. I came in at 2:57PM and they were already cleaning up the sandwich and salad station. No more panini after the lunch rush. Only cold sandwiches. Anyhow, I ordered the prosciutto $8.95 and a Heart Thrive chocolate chip bar as the cashier said it was amazing. It's not. Typically energy bar- dry and chalky. As for the sandwich, please see attached picture. It lacked meat; two slices of prosciutto, a few leaves of basil, pesto sauce, and mozzarella cheese on Dutch crunch. The bread was on point while everything else lackluster. Additionally, all sandwiches come with side salad but they were in a rush to get me out, they forgot my salad. Disappointing. I was around the area and decided to stop by, when I walked in, the place itself looked clean and nice. However, when I went to order the lady making my sandwich took my order without even facing me which I found quite rude but ordered anyways since I was hungry. She was cleaning at the time and when I placed my order she put down the broom and went straight into making the sandwich... she didn't wash her hands or put on gloves, I lose my appetite then and there, I didn't even eat it and instead bought from another place nearby. High XII has become the default lunch place for me and others at my office! The salad bar here is fresh and has a much better selection than the usual cafe. There are a ton of roasted vegetables (mushrooms, squash, brussels sprouts), which I love, and the chicken breast is never dry. There's also a really incredible salmon that my coworkers love, especially because it only ends up being around $12 for a salmon dish with rice and salad. The service is incredible - the guy at the checkout talks to all of us as if we're his friends and I love his energetic personality and attentiveness! He always tares the scale for my salads so I know I'm not being overcharged. I eat pretty small portions for lunch and so usually I just pay about $7 for my roasted vegetables, chicken, and egg salad, which is a much better price than other places downtown. read more

A solid spot that is reminiscent of the deli's back east! A salad bar priced per pound with legit offerings and a deli counter for sandwiches, panini's and some hot foods. I opted for the avocado chicken salad on a whole wheat roll and it was good, not great. The chicken salad was solid. A little too creamy, but the jalapenos totally added a great spice factor, while that avocado was a great contrast. The problem? For the price it could have used a tad bit more oomph - whether it be lettuce or tomatoes, or maybe just a little more chicken salad. My go-to lunch spot when I forget to pack my lunch. Love their diverse salad bar! They have so many grilled veggie options. And the price by weight is not too bad considering how heavy my salads come out to be. VERY friendly customer service as well. I have never had a bad experience here yet. The only downfall is the single checkout line that gets very long during lunch. But let me tell you... It is always worth waiting in line to check out with this particular cashier/barista (Jose). Jose is the sweetest man ever. He really gets to know each of his customers and demonstrates his immense care to your experience here. He will bring your food to you personally if it is not ready by the time you check out with him. :) I had one absent-minded moment when I forgot to bring my wallet during my lunch break. I only figured out that my wallet was missing as I was checking out with Jose. I was so embarrassed and wanted to go all the way back to my work to get my wallet and pay for the salad I had already made. High XII - I've heard people pronounce this differently, I was saying High twelve since it is on 12th street. But apparently it is 'High Noon' which makes a lot of sense. That being said, I work in this building and find myself popping down most days for a cup of coffee or swinging by on my way in to grab some breakfast. Their coffee is good. They brew Verve and do it well. It always seems fresh and they have a couple of roasts on all the time. The cashier/barista will also do espresso drinks for you, although I haven't gotten one of those yet. My go to is their regular coffee. For breakfast there is quite a variety. They usually have some sort of rotating dish (today was biscuits and gravy) as well as the typical eggs and toast dishes. They'll also make you a breakfast sandwich, toast you a bagel, or even do something custom if you want, they are quite accommodating. In addition to the above there is also a variety of pastries. Usually some doughnuts, croissants, and breads. For lunch they have a rotating entree, as well as sandwiches and a serve yourself and weight it salad bar. The salad bar has a good variety and looks like it is well stocked and fresh. Things can get busy so you have to be prepared to wait sometimes, but it usually isn't so bad. Where they really shine, though, is with the service. The cashier specifically is super nice every time I go in and makes an effort to say hello and something nice to me and everyone else that comes by. That makes the entire experience that much better. I just wanted to leave a quick review after my most recent visit. I've been here before, but have never really had a memorable experience. A coworker of mine loves this place and talks about it often so I decided to give it another try rather than going to my usual spot for breakfast. The service here is great. The staff is clearly very hard working and they're friendly. They handle orders quickly so you don't have to worry about wasting too much time when you come here. I've heard that they have daily specials here and even a few reviews mention them, but I couldn't see any sign or indicator that this was the case during my visit today. I was mostly curious to see if I'd want to come back for lunch or plan a visit later during the week. If this information is posted anywhere, I completely missed it. Generally, when I get breakfast in the area, I'll typically go for a breakfast burrito. You can't go wrong with a breakfast burrito. It's an entire breakfast wrapped neatly for your convenience. Before I continue, here's what was written about their breakfast video in two other reviews posted: 10/19/2015: "Breakfast burritos are pathetically small here. Skip it." 7/1/2016: "The $6 burrito was tiny and poorly wrapped. I'm disappointed to say the least." The breakfast burrito is actually $5, but that's besides the point. I agree with both of these reviews. It is a small burrito. I thought maybe today was a fluke because the tortilla they used are the kind you'd use to make a soft taco or a quesadilla--not a burrito. It was small and I regretted coming here before they even finished making it. I ordered turkey sausage. They used one small turkey sausage patty--just one--that they cut into bits to top the burrito off with. I guess that's to be expected since they use such small tortillas. You do get a decent amount of eggs and potatoes at least, though I would have also wanted a bit more cheese. When it came time to wrapping the "burrito"--quotation marks intentional--I was curious how it was going to work out, you know, with the small tortilla and everything. Well, it was hardly what I'd call wrapped. The only thing keeping it together was the foil it was wrapped into. Neither side of the "burrito" was closed off since there just wasn't enough tortilla. It wasn't exactly a lazy wrap. There was just wasn't enough tortilla to wrap it properly. Naturally, a lot of the insides fell out when I tried to eat it. Remember to grab a fork. The flavor was just alright. $5 isn't a terrible price, but I can, and usually do, get a better breakfast burrito from Juice Joint for $6. High XII doesn't really have a good salsa selection either. There is no selection. You can get Tapatio and that's it. I prefer a green or red salsa with my breakfast burritos. So, in summary, not the best breakfast burrito. Go to Juice Joint if that's what you want. If I ever crave a standard breakfast, I'll probably check this place out again. If I can ever figure out what their daily specials are that are so raved about, I'll probably check them out for lunch. Great staff, though! read more

This is the mecca of lunch spots in Download Oakland! Think of a modern cafeteria with high-quality food and a huge variety. From sandwiches, to salads, to full meals, to desserts and coffee, this place has got it. My favorite thing to get for lunch is the miso-glazed salmon with Mediterranean-style rice and a side of kale salad (which has bacon in it... which is fine by me). The highlight of the salad bar is its stock of various roasted vegetables. The line for food can be quick on some days and a little longer on others, especially during the lunch rush. Either way, the service is always warm and friendly. Most people take their food to go, but this is also a great place for a lunch date... the succulent centerpieces on the tables are super cute and simple. While the prices here aren't AS cheap as Chinatown a couple blocks away, they're definitely cheaper than any other similar sandwich/salad shop I've been to in the area.
