    Hot Pastrami Melt
    Steve D.

The other day, I stopped by this cafe just before lunchtime and grabbed a Hot Pastrami sandwich to-go. The folks behind the counter worked quick to get my order ready, and I was on my way. At first I thought they didn't put enough pastrami in my sandwich. Then I realized I asked for "everything" like lettuce, tomato, mayo, pickles, onion and avocado. Great presentation, and they added a little side salad. That sandwich was SO loaded, I saved half for later. Great sandwich! This place has a great location in Oakland City Center. It's on 11th street, between Broadway and Franklin. It's within a block of three major hotels- The Marriott, Marriott Courtyard, and Hampton Inn. It's across the street from the Trans-Pacific Centre. Also, it's near BART and major bus stops. That's why I think the prices are reasonable for downtown.

We went to this cafe on a Friday around noon for lunch. It's located right next to the Bart station and the Marriott. The place had a few customers, which was good because we were a large group. They have a great selection of food at very reasonable prices for downtown Oakland where everything seems to be marked up. The menu ranges from wraps to sandwiches to paninis. They also have a breakfast menu, and, of course, coffee. The decor is cute. The service is quick and the staff is so nice (customer service is a big one for me!). I can definitely seeing myself coming back often.

*** High XII Cafe & Coffee is back OPEN *** as of Monday, June 8th. Sadly, it's been closed due to the pandemic since March and then another couple of weeks due to the rioting/vandalizing/looting in Downtown Oakland. Senseless and definitely sad for small business trying to survive. I know everyone is on edge at this time, but High XII owner, Abby and staff, Jose and Leti (my apologies for not knowing the others) are wonderful, welcoming, friendly and help to start off your morning! Everyone there I might add, is doing a great job at following CDC recommendations: face masks, gloves, markings on the floor for social distancing, touchless payment, plexi, plastic drape to protect the food, employees and the customers while being ever so friendly and respectful... Definitely adding that extra star to this review! High XII Cafe has limited their hours (Mon-Fri, 8am - 1:30pm) and menu to a few breakfast items (some Starter Bakery goodies), Verve coffee with sandwiches and salad until they get back on their feet. This place is nothing fancy but great to grab a pastry and quick bite after getting off 12th Street BART station, with a short walk around the corner onto 11th. Show this business some love and support by stopping by, grabbing a bite (tip: the salmon and kale salad lunch is the best!) and making a small donation/tip for this business and hardworking staff! Pay it forward! :)

** The following review reflects my experience prior to the shelter-in-place order currently in effect. ** Surely I can't be the only one confused by the name of this little cafe. It's called High 12 even though it's on 11th. Guess it doesn't matter much since the customers work in and around the office building it's in. I just happened upon it as I was waiting for my dental appointment. The owner was quite industrious as he was serving a robust breakfast menu by himself. I just went for the $2.50 Cafe au Lait, and that was just fine. COFFEE - 4 stars...he managed to keep it warm without burning it, no small feat for a one-man operation AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...fairly generic but clean SERVICE - 4 stars...he works hard for the money TOTAL - 4 stars...c'mon, how 'bout High 11? Where's the sausage???
    Mark F.

This review is based solely on the breakfast burrito I ordered. I got the breakfast burrito with turkey sausage and avocado (and no cheese). First, there was very little turkey sausage. To the point that I initially thought that they forgot to include it. Also, the turkey sausage had an odd flavor to it. Tasted kind of like what Veggie sausages used to taste like - kind of a chemical-y flavor. Wasn't great. The potatoes were cooked unevenly where some were undercooked. And the fillings were not spread out evenly where sometimes all I would taste is avocado or potatoes. All in all an uneven, mediocre burrito at best. They were very nice and maybe the rest of their stuff is good but purely based on the breakfast burrito, it was just meh.

The place is extremely clean and the food looks and tastes fresh. Delicious coffee, friendly atmosphere and clean and welcoming environment. The gentleman at the register (didn't get his name) was extremely friendly and goes above and beyond to make you, the customer, feel welcome. I initially went in for coffee and ended up leaving with not only a delicious mocha but a filling breakfast sandwich called the "eye opener". If more places in the Bay Area had this level of customer service, business would flourish and not die. Would definitely come here again.

$8.95 for two slices of prosciutto and no veggies beside the leafy basil.

I'm forever grateful for that recommendation because they make some of the best sandwiches I've ever had. I've tried a few items on the menu, but the one I always recommend is the Hot Italian. Everything about this sandwich is incredible. It's packed with flavor, and you can honestly tell it was made with care. I usually pair it with a bag of chips, and the total comes to around $18. It's absolutely worth every penny and always leaves me full and satisfied. The shop is consistently clean, and the customer service is always friendly and welcoming. I find myself going back over and over again, then telling myself I need to take a break--only to end up back there a few weeks later. That's how good it is. A couple of things to keep in mind before you visit: there's only limited street parking, so you may have to circle the block to find a spot. There's also not much room to wait inside, although they do have a bench or two where you can sit while your sandwich is being prepared. In my experience, the wait is usually around 15 minutes. I've honestly never been here when it wasn't busy, so expect a crowd. But once you take that first bite, you'll understand why. Great food, great atmosphere, and great customer service. I highly recommend checking this place out!

The deli is a nice size with a couple of benches to sit and wait for your food. You can look at the menu and order, plus grab a drink or chips. They have a nice variety of items to grab that go well with your sandwich. The service was friendly and quick. Workers were all kind, and we love that it's dog-friendly! Regarding the sandwiches, you can get a hot or cold sandwich. You can also build your own! Companion got the Hot Boy, and I went the Build Your Own route. The sandwiches are hefty, with lots of great meats and fillings, and for the price, very decent! I wish my bread were a bit more toasted and crunchier, but that's my preference. It hit the spot, and I'd be open to trying their other sandwiches. I don't often go to delis, but Brothers Deli was a nice place to try. We enjoyed it by the waterfront, which makes it a great picnic option. Find them off Park Blvd., with street and residential parking around.

I love that they use traditional cuts for the sisig. A generous portion of meltingly soft gelatinous pig's head (jowl, ears, snout, etc.) is loaded into a bubbly, crackly baguette-bolillo hybrid. The rich, seasoned pig drippings and runny egg yolk soak into the bread without turning it soggy, while the savory soy seasoning, creamy mayo, and mild kick from the chilies make every bite more delicious. The woman at the register was very nice and asked if we had any questions. My mom and I shared a pastrami sandwich, Brussels sprouts, fries, and slaw. It was reasonably priced for the Bay Area. When they brought the food to the table I was shocked. Everything looked amazing and very appetizing, and the portions were much bigger than expected. Before she brought the sandwich over, she asked if we were sharing it and was so nice to split it into 2 plates for us. That was very kind for her to do. Let's start with the French fries. Omg they were perfectly crisp but still fluffy on the inside. They had so much flavor probably because of the beef tallow and had just the right amount of salt on them. There was a side of mayonnaise with the fries, and it tasted homemade. I meant to ask them if it was. It was very good lol I couldn't get enough. The poppyseed slaw was very refreshing and it was tangy and sweet. We loved that the cabbage remained crispy and it was great for a warm day. The fried Brussels sprouts were full of flavor. They were a nice balance of sweet and salty. I loved the bacon on them. The hot pastrami sandwich definitely satisfied my pastrami craving! There was just the right ratio of meat-cheese-sauerkraut-mustard-dressing. The bread tasted freshly baked as well. It was full of flavor. And the side salad that came with the sandwich was excellent. We loved the tanginess of the dressing. We were shocked that there wasn't more people inside, but also for 2pm on a Monday, it probably was just an off hour. We had so many leftovers as we both don't eat very much, but lol as soon as I got home I started eating some more of the slaw and salad. Can't wait to eat the rest for lunch tomorrow. We are already planning on coming back to try the meatballs next time and definitely trying their Indian cuisine! I'll have to bring my husband here next. Thank you guys for an amazing lunch!

I'm sure there are other good things here but I keep just getting the cheese steak. The picture…read moredoesn't do it justice. It's a warm, crunchy roll, the chopped steak and cheese are perfect, and there's a salad next to it so you can take a bite of that while you're waiting for the next bit of your sandwich to cool down. Do yourself a favor and order this in instead of carrying it out. The roll is warm and crunchy and I think too much time in a bag would make everything less delicious. (I'm sure it's still good, it's just *better* if you can eat it when it's fresh.) I swear one of these days I'll try something else on the menu.

Awhile back, I tried to bring as much business to Star Meat as I could because 1. it's a small business and 2. it's inside Star Grocery (which I LOVE, so it's convenient). When I would go there, there would often be 2 or 3 people behind the counter and oftentimes I would be the only customer. I felt like I had to stand there forever before anyone even acknowledged I existed. Each person would be busy doing something, but there was no "I'll be with you in 2 minutes." Finally, I went one day and there were 3 workers behind the counter chatting with each other. I was the only customer and was standing around 6 feet away from them, looking right at them. They went on with there conversation (not doing any other work) for a full 5 minutes. Finally I thought, "OK, they really don't seem to want my business, so I can go to any one of 4 other places and get what I want." That was a year or two ago. So, today I thought, why not give it another try, it's certainly convenient. Again, I'm the only customer at the counter. One guy is washing equipment and two guys are making sandwiches. I know that they know that I'm there, there are mirrors all along the back wall exactly for the purpose of seeing the customers. After around 4 minutes I think, who knows how long I'm going to be standing here. Maybe they have to make 20 sandwiches and I'll be here for a half hour. So, I left. I don't have anything like this experience at the 4 other meat counters I go to in the area. I'm totally fine waiting if I have some sense that I'm waiting for a purpose and that the worker will get to me as soon as they can. But at Star Meat, it feels like I'm more of an inconvenience than a customer. "Hi, I'll be with you as soon as I can," goes a long way.

Glad we were able to track them down cause their sandwiches look so basic in pics but are so darn good. The market is cool too but I'm always gonna start by bee lining it to the deli in back of the shop to order one of their daily sandwiches. They make 3 flavors each day. 18$ a pop. Delicious.
