We were looking for a quick lunch following a funeral nearby. This place had some great reviews so we gave it a whirl. The staff was friendly, fortunately it wasn't crowded. We ordered their specialty- roast beef sandwiches, sat down and a few minutes later our order came out. I rarely order roast beef but this was on point. Everything that makes a classic sandwich- beef was juicy and tender, just the right amount of "au jus", sharp provolone, crusty roll, dollop of horseradish- I topped mine off with a roasted long hot pepper. Totally forgot to take a photo. But there's a reason people are saying they are better than Nick's. The menu isn't extensive, but it doesn't need to be. Definitely recommend giving this spot a shot. I will caution that there are only a few tables, so I'm guessing they do a lot of take out business. read more

Simply the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. Hand carved steam ship round. Sublime gravy. Crispy Sarcone"s Kaiser roll, Sharp provolone ,and a perfect red long hot pepper. Under $10. Small cute place run by a really nice couple dedicated to quality. Great ice coffee was just a pleasant surprise. Close to the stadium on Broad. First time, walked up to a locked door and was told they only have beef w/wo cheese, no menu, no niceties, nothing outside to eat on. Drove to a park four blocks south and found a bench, Worst Sarcones roll ever, meat was mushy, dry, asked to be very, very wet, and that was not honored. Gravy was flavorless. Every time I bite into their sandwich it reminds me of my grandmothers roast beef growing up. No offense to Nick's but this is the best beef in the city. If you are expecting a steakhouse setting with a a bunch of tables this isn't that... this is a small cafe with a huge cut of the best roast beef piled high on a fresh Kaiser roll. I cannot say enough good things about this place. I order from here like twice a week and I'm never disappointed. The roast beef is amazing. $13 for a roast beef sandwich, a drink and chips. I get mine soaked, with banana peppers on the side and a raspberry tea to drink. I constantly crave the roast beef sandwich from here. Been to lots of events in and around Philly for my whole life. I have eaten a lot of roast beef sandwiches and this place, hands down, has THE BEST ROAST BEEF I have ever had. It wasn't too wet, but the roll held the moisture well. The taste of the beef was fresh and seasoned perfectly. It's all you need - just the sandwich. The menu is limited, but stick to the roast beef. You will experience SOUTH PHILLY ettiquite... not overly friendly, even if you DO speak Italian, which the owner does. Probably came off the boat 50 years ago, but he is a staple in the community to which he belongs. It is a tiny, quaint place - don't bring a crowd or you will have to walk Broad Street with you food. ONE NOTE - it is hard to find!! We walked up and down the block and my boyfriend had been there before. There is purple neon on the window and a the name is a decal on the window. There is NO SIGN, other than the menu on a chalkboard on the sidewalk., at the bottom of the steps. I did say quaint.... ENJOY!!!!! read more

I just love this place it's one of the best kept secrets that Cafe Chicco top of the list best place for Roast Beef Sandwiches up there with Nick's etc! Known about it a few years but I'd get here now and then but keep buggin thru facebook asking when will there be delivery, and more recent u can get it thank u!! ..also it was cash only way back another bit inconvenience I'd walk past but not having cash on-hand i'd do an oh well.. NOW pretty sure they take credit!!! The Roast Beef is to die for..piled high..the gravy like grandma use to make and their other sandwiches ie Meatball or salads or any specials are also delicious! Let it be known though that its a small cafe only maybe 4 tables so it's not a sit down bring a crowd place..and also for some reason from the outside its easy to miss.. but then again i did say it's a best south philly secret.. i was first told about this place from those in the health field considering nearby Methodist Hosptial and Doctors offices on broad. This is a hidden gem. The previous two reviewers were dead on, get the Roast Beef and don't look back. The owner worked at the famous Nick's Roast beef from 1985-1995 or something like that. This is a serious sandwich. You'd never expect it since this a coffee shop but damn man... that roast beef is a labor of love and it shows. They have a few little tables, refrigerators for beverages, a coffee counter, and a hefty carving station. I should never have written this review because now the craving is back and i'll have to make my way over there to satisfy it. read more

I returned to Cafe Chicco on Broad Street for the third time. (I missed doing a review before). This is a small place, up a few stairs, a few tables inside. Sometimes its almost like a neighborhood place where locals come in the afternoon. Their specialty is the roast beef sandwich, on a long or a round roll. Cheese if you like. Soft drinks in a refrigerator case. They have a very reasonable breakfast, look at their menu for yourself. There is a display case with a large roast beef, the owner or cook carves the sandwich, the young lady brings it to the table. Its good, simple food, delicious sandwich and I would return any time I am in Philadelphia. Its plain and simple but outstanding in my opinion. read more

To all you people rating 5 stars: are you going to the same Caffe Chicco I've been to?!? I didn't only go one time, because I like to give the benefit of the doubt whenever I have a bad experience. I've been there a total of 3 times. Each time I stopped in there, it was worse than the previous visit. Andrew B. stated in his rating "Everything they have is good." What is "everything"?! They have next to nothing! Can I ask why they have menus if 99% of what's on the menu is NOT AVAILABLE?! The only thing they have stocked is coffee and if you're LUCKY, a dunkin donuts bagel. The coffee isn't even great, either. The owner is rude & obnoxious and has a tendency to become very arrogant when you try to order items off the menu that they're out of (which is basically everything on there). There are so many way better places in south philly that I'd rather go to. You live, you learn! read more
