Look, I'm not gonna tell you that I'm any kind of authority on Philly sandwiches, but I've eaten around up there. It's not my hometown, but I like to visit when I can. And I LOVE a good cheesesteak. That being said, our party of four (including one kid) came here on a very rainy Sunday to see an exhibit up at the Franklin Institute. We decided to stop somewhere for a place that has a roast pork sandwich and a cheesesteak, along with at least one kid-friendly item (to appease all party members). This is how we wound up at George's. They have a walk-up window, and only about 7 counter stools inside. But, we were there pretty early (around 11am) and took up four of the seats. It was kind of an experience to see the rain falling outside, see the birds jumping around on the sidewalk eating crumbs of bread, and watching people come up to the window to order. Oh, to capture the urban landscape in words... Anyway. I got the PBR, roast pork sub with broccoli rabe and the sharp cheese (I think it's Romano). Let me tell you... they server it with a fork, and now I know why. Juicy beyond belief! It was insanely good, with just the right amount of droopy broccoli and tons of savory pork, with just a bit of spice and also some noticeable chunks of garlic. The cheese was the perfect complement to the rest of the ingredients. It was so intensely good! Another in our party ordered the cheesesteak, and while this was also a very favorable option, my favorite would still be that roast pork. The kid had a hot dog, and she was also very happy with it. So, for less than $50 for the entire group, we all got a huge hoagie, a bag of chips for the kiddo, and a beverage each. Honestly very reasonable, price-wise these days. Parking is as lucky as you can find on the street, so shop around. We lucked out and got a spot as someone was leaving literally at the front door. The neighborhood itself is worth walking around, too, with some very neat niche shops nearby. We probably would have spent a ton more time had we not bought time tickets to an exhibit. Still, if you're in the area, give them a try. You likely won't be disappointed. We clearly weren't! This was well worth the research to find the joint, and well worth driving through a quaint part of the city to reach it. read more

I think I can say that George's serves my favorite roast pork sandwich in the city. I won't say "best" or "most authentic" (whatever that means), but it is the one I have enjoyed the most. The meat has a great texture and flavor. It's juicy but not fatty. I got mine with broccoli rabe and sharp provolone. My husband enjoyed his Italian sausage with peppers and onions very much. But he was jealous of my sandwich. Compared to other places with similar sandwiches, the prices were reasonable. They have window service, which I appreciate these days. I can shop outdoors at the market's streetside vendors and grab a great lunch too from a classic Philly sandwich shop. We took our sandwiches to a nearby park and enjoyed them. Got four pork sandwiches; two "wet" and two with mild provolone "not too wet". Ordered at the window; courteous service. Watched the prep and area is generally clean. Reasonably priced at $12 for an 8" sandwich. Hot, fresh, not overly seasoned delicious pork on a seedless soft roll. Parking is challenging and 9th Street may have lost its charm but I would go back there instead of Tony Luke's, Pat's or Geno's if I don't need/want seating. read more

But it's not his fault. We came here because Pats and Genos lines were both crazy ridiculous and I thought a sandwich shop in the Italian market would not only have cheesesteak but an Italian hoagie as well. I was wrong...I got a cheesesteak with the works along with The George. I guess you aren't supposed to say if you want toppings because it definitely put them in a bad mood when I ordered. We visited Little Italy and stopped at the Visitor Center and asked the lady there where the locals go to eat their Philly Cheesesteaks and she mentioned this place as the place to go to. This is not a sit down restaurant, they have a window where you order your food and then you either take it to go or you find a sidewalk table or bench to have you meal. We chose to go around the corner and just sat at a church stairs and have our lunch. My girlfriend ordered the tripe sandwich and I went with the Philly Cheesesteak. Both sandwiches were unbelievably good. My cheesesteak was so flavorful and cheesy with onions, and my girlfriend essentially said the tripe was similar to the way she makes tripe at home. Bottom line, the next time I go back I will hit this spot again!! read more

Disappointed with the PBR (Pork, broccoli rabe, sharp provolone) on a sub roll. Italian classic. However, the broccoli rabe and gravy destroyed the roll making it impossible to eat sandwich style. The sandwich was served very fast so I'm not sure if it was made ahead of time and wrapped up It was the special of the day. I did eat the broccoli rabe and pork separately with a fork. The pork was cooked to perfection but the gravy was lackluster, having. relatively no flavor or seasoning which made it disappointing and whatever provolone was on the sandwich was melted into the soggy bread I didn't eat. The PBR was excellent but they need to do something about the soggy bread. After just 10 minutes in its wrapper, the bread nearly disintegrated in my hands. The saving grace was the pork. It was so incredibly tender and just the right amount of seasoning. The chunks of pork in the PBR is unlike the roast pork sandwiches I've had elsewhere in Philly. George's version actually reminds me of the tongue sandwich I had in Italy (tender, fatty, full of flavor and simply delicious). The extra sharp provolone makes it even better. I could've done without the broccoli rabe. It didn't really add much to the sandwich in my opinion. I think long hots on the side would be a better alternative for next time. read more

These sandwiches have a LOT of meat of them if that's what you're into. They definitely don't skimp, but I wasn't thrilled with the flavors. I got the George sandwich, and my friends got chicken cheesesteaks. They had asked for the cheesesteak PBR, but they were served plain cheesesteaks - they said there wasn't enough cheese on them. Honestly, the broccolini didn't add anything to the sandwich anyways, it was slightly overcooked and unseasoned. The red gravy also didn't have much flavor. However, everything was STEAMING while we ate it, and I did get a good cheese pull with my provolone. The bread was also delicious and fresh. I don't understand this following with all these reviews. I guess I should have tried the pork. I always order 2 things from new places to make sure that something is good. 1. Philly cheesesteak: meat was dry, way too dry, asked for extra whiz on the side, twice, did not receive. The whiz also is not good here, tastes like it is made from cheese powder. Fried onions were fine. Roll was ok. Referring to the other posts on here, this is ABSOLUTELY NOT the secret best cheesesteak in Philly. Usually places in Philly do an at least ok job with cheesesteaks, this was not one of those places. 2. meatball sub: meatballs were good, large, flavorful. Sauce was absolutely miserable. No spices, it was as if they had just opened up a can of tomato paste and covered the meatballs with it. It even smelled disgusting, reminded me of a bad school lunch. Asked for onions, no onions on sandwich. They were out of mozzarella. Asked for other stuff and didn't receive that either. No napkins in bag. Sandwiches were falling out of their wrappers. I got ripped off by Mark today. I bought 2 take out containers which was supposed to be $8 each. Making it $16 bucks. He charged me $19 and I gave him a $2 tip. I didn't realize the price was $8 each until 20 min after I ordered and left. I called multiple times and they never answered. Next time, don't get ripped off by asking the price before you order. Whether you're looking for delicious traditional options, or for a taste of the bizarre, George's has plenty of sandwich varieties to tantalize your taste buds. For the long haul I knew that George's was a prized South Philly sandwich institution; even if it is a little more off the radar than the likes of John's Roast Park, Sarcone's, the Pat's/Geno's monstrosities, et all. But like most Yelpers, it wasn't until I saw the incredible Philly edition of Bizarre Foods where our (and Federal Donuts!) own Felicia D. took Andrew Zimmerman here that had me intrigued. And while I wasn't exactly sold on chowing down on the tripe and tongue combo right away, I knew that it was a destination that I had to hit! My first bite of pure sandwich bliss was the hot Italian sausage (the normal hot, not the BURN MY ASS variety!) fully loaded with broccoli rabe. If you're looking for a perfect sandwich combo this is hands down it! As I gradually worked up the stomach to go bizarre I found that tripe and tongue (which isn't even on the menu officially) surprisingly make for another perfect combo. juicy and tender would be two adjectives you wouldn't think of in the situation that actually hit the mark. From cheesesteaks and cheeseburgers, to meatballs and roast pork George's definitely has plenty of the usual offerings done right. But when you're looking to take a bite out of adventure on your lunchbreak, it's a sandwich shop that's somewhat unrivaled. read more

Being in the city and recently watched Bizarre Foods Philadelphia episode, I had to track this place down. It's in the heart of the Italian Market, so you get to experience both the market and their sandwiches. You can either go inside where there are maybe four tables at e counter to eat or order through their walk-up window. I recommend the window since you get to see all options for ingredients. FYI, the pork, beef, and tripe options, you can mix your sandwiches. If you want to try the different cuts, you can order a sandwich with two or three meats. However, you can't mix the sandwich with the Philly cheese. When I came to Philadelphia I had one agenda item, to make sure I try a real Philly Cheesesteak. Why not try it at the place Andrew Zimmern recommends. I asked to have it prepared the traditional way, which comes with sautéed onions with the steak. I like how the cheese lines the bottom of the bun, giving a minimal protection from the juices. You don't want a full barrier since you want it to soak in a little, giving the bun that extra delicious flavor. This is truly the real deal. The steak is prepared well and cut thin to allow the flavor to come through. It was worth the trouble getting here I now ventured to the exotic cuts to try what brought Bizarre Foods out. To get a sampler, I chose the pork, beef, and tripe all on one sandwich. The first flaw is not having the cheese line the bread for a barrier for the juice. The juices although add flavor to the bun, it also transforms it into a soggy mess if you don't eat it in 5-10 minutes. Its not an option to "take it home" to eat it later. All three meats were cooked well. Its easy to over cook the beef and pork consequently drying it out. Not in this case. Both were still juicy and not crispy. If the tripe had been under cooked, it would have been too rubbery, but it wasn't. It too had the correct texture. All three meats couldn't compare to the steak. They all lacked in flavoring. The only one that looked marinated was the tripe in a tomato base, but none of the flavors came through. I didn't particularly care for the cooks attitude who also took my order. I mentioned that I was from out of town and this was my first real Philly steak. He wasn't any help or made me feel welcome. read more

The balding guy may look crabby. But his service is prompt and on spot. As is the menu items. The place may look like a dive inside. And on a hot day it may be less than comfortable to eat inside. But it is all well worth it. My favorite is the Italian Sausage Sandwich. I always get the "Burn my ass" which is semi-hot for me. For vanilla folks it will burn. Also one can NEVER go wrong with the Pork Sandwich with Provolone. I even took a girl on our first date to this place for lunch. Yeah a bit low brow. Great find for authentic philly cheesesteak adjacent to the Philadelphia Italian Market. On our way to the airport, we diverted to George's to pick up a greasy hoagie to make others jealous on our crowded plane ride home. Despite the sogginess of being knocked around in a luggage bag for an hour, George's sandwich checked all the boxes and we look forward to returning to sit "al fresco" out front. After just having cheesesteaks the night before, we opted for Sausage Sandwiches ($9) with sauce, peppers & onions for lunch while strolling the market. They did not disappoint! The meat texture was different from the sausages I get at the grocery store. My friend said the local butchers do a courser grind and mix in less fat than the mass produced ones. Ordered the TNT, Cheesesteak, and Italian sausage. TNT was bland at first, then I put a dash of black pepper and it was a decent hoagie, and at $7 it was a steal. The cheesesteak was a little dry, make sure to ask the cook to not over cook the steak, and at $6.50 it's a way better deal than pat's steak or Geno's steak down the street. So yesterday we had the chance to try some of George's sandwiches. I'd seen the episode of Bizarre Foods even before I'd even moved to Philadelphia, so this had been on my to-eat list for a while. Unfortunately, when walking down the Italian Market, I'd usually already stuffed myself by the time we'd gotten to George's. Well, not this time. We decided to get the TNT (tongue and tripe) and the spicy veal. The dude working the counter recommended long hots and onions on both, so we told him to layer it on. Admittedly, these sandwiches are likely meant to be eaten as soon as they're prepped. I mean, the fillings are soaked in vats of stew for god knows how many hours (which probably contributes to their soft, soaked-in goodness!) and the roll is soft and absorbent--can't describe this bad boy as crusty. But, against our own better judgment, we did takeout and waited til getting home to slay these beasts. If you decide to go this route, you're gonna want a plate underneath and maybe some rubber gloves. "Soggy" is an understatement, but it doesn't stop the sandwiches from being little bundles of joy. The tongue and tripe stew seemed peppery and was my favorite of the two. The veal wasn't spicy at all, but was still delicious, and had a texture similar to pulled pork. If I grabbed another one of George's sandwiches, I'd definitely eat it on site. read more

Right at the corner of 9th and Christian, George's is an unassuming eatery that features window ordering in addition to their indoor counter. George's has a limited menu--just braised meat sandwiches with few add-ons. Perhaps their best, however, is the roast pork, with sharp provolone and broccoli rabe. It's perfect through and through. Great roll, meat is as tender as possible, great cheese, perfectly executed broccoli rabe--it's just awesome. Plus, there will never be an insane wait. Anyone worth their high blood pressure knows Philly's best sandwich is the roast pork. I'll never fully grasp why the cheesesteak would be printed on our $1 bills if we became our own sovereign nation because the flavors of pork are far more interesting and tasty. Differences in cook temperatures, marinades, and seasoning create more room for a better sandwich. Compare honor roll student sharp provolone against the short bus services of whiz and all doubt, in my minority opinion, is removed. This proliferation of great roast pork makes it easy to spot impostors; the bad ones that have the authenticity of fat Vegas Elvis impersonators. This is George's. The pork tastes like it was marinated in water. The broccoli rabe fails to add its trademark bitterness and if the sharp provolone was a knife it would struggle to cut its way through warm butter. If you're thinking about George's, you're thinking about the Italian Market. That's the good news; your thoughts have plenty of room to wander elsewhere.
