This seems to be the "cool" place to be on Queen Anne. I'd fit in much better if I were wearing an entire outfit from Urban Outfitters, trendy glasses, and a funkidelic hat, toting a laptop, but alas, I'm just me. I didn't fit in. The line was long, the place was packed (why?) and in the end, my iced tea wasn't all it was cracked up to be. Plus, the employees were pretty damn rude, obviously needing a lesson in customer service.... service with a smile? Not so much. Just had a wretched experience - my first in years - with a "coffee Nazi" at Caffe Ladro. I took in my own recycled cup, which he promptly threw into the trash, and then refused to return either the cup or the lid to me (even though they were mine - I paid for them), claiming he could be sued! More than refusing to return my property, he was physically menacing when I suggested that I retrieve the cup and lid myself. We are ardent environmentalists, and for years have reused (after cleaning them thoroughly) our paper cups and especially the plastic lids. Today I went in for two drinks, with a paper cup and a plastic cup - and the fellow was perfectly willing to make a coffee in the plastic cup, but not the paper one! He was a tall stocky fellow, with dark eyes, short dark hair and beard; around 2:15pm on 3/27/13. I deeply resented his anti-environmental and anti-customer attitude. I canceled my order and instead went to Starbucks; next time I see him there, I will do exactly the same. read more

4 stars? I guess I won't question people in their coffee taste but just give my opinion. Latte and a tea, in very small cups was almost $8. Tea was fine. Latte was a total waste of my calorie consumption. It tasted like warm milk (I usually get breve but I think he decided I did not need the fat and gave me milk...and my tummy was in pain all day long. There is a reason some of us get half and half in our coffee drinks and that reason could be due to less lactose!!) There was no coffee taste in it. I actually had to open my cup to see if there was any brown in it. There was but it was so light, I really do question if they are doing their pulls correctly. Either they pull too long, don't add enough coffee or are ripping people off by not doing a double. Go here if you do not like coffee flavored coffee drinks. Do not go here if you like a hearty espresso drink, you will be disappointed and feel ripped off. My biggest desire as a Yelp user is to give good, helpful, honest reviews. I came here for the first time today, and the music was absolutely assaulting. Like, horrible dissonant garbage punk. I cordially and kindly asked the barista to change the music, which they did after telling me that it's "usually up to the barista what gets played". I had to explain that I came here to study, and that it's not my intention to offend their taste, but the music wasn't conducive to the experience I wanted. The music they put on next was definitely less unenjoyable. The bottom line is that it's never about what the business or staff wants as much as it's about the customer's experience. I highly recommend that whoever manages this place sets a standard for the music, as a customer it's absolutely u comfortable to have to ask the barista to change the music to something more tasteful and conducive to a pleasant experience. Here in Seattle, getting an espresso that's pretty good is easy. Actually creating an experience that is great is entirely different. Also, my Gibraltar was good. Next time I got out for coffee in my neighborhood, I'm going to Storyville coffee (located right across the street). **Edit: after spending some time here, another customer can that left their dog tied up outside to continuously bark for 20+ minutes. I've gone to multiple Cafe Ladros around the city and stopped @ this one after breakfast in the area. Great coffee, they never make it too sweet! I'm constantly reducing the number of syrup pumps at many other coffee places. They're cold drinks and warm drinks are great. I've tried a few of their pastries and they're good. One thing that could be better is their coffee isn't as strong as I like, even though I always get a double tall. Double tall @ Sbux usually is strong enough and I don't really want to pay for a triple tall @ ladro. read more

Looks like Ladro made a few improvements...having the staff wear clothes and comb the bugs out of their beards...and the Aeropress. Staff is pretty friendly, but it still feels like the QA location is the place that Kurt Cobain last visited before killing himself...it's depressing 1994 decor does not impress. I've been a long term drinker there and wont go anywhere else. I am getting my friends turned onto Ladro because the coffee is extremely smooth and compared to S.......s which their coffee tastes like acid I havent had better coffee anywhere else. With that being said, their shorter older guy there has been on many occassions extremely rude ( GENERALLY ON THE WEEKENDS WHEN MANAGEMENT ISNT THERE) and had a confrontation last weekend (actually he confronted me) . It had nothing to do with who I am but it has made going into the upper queen anne store extremly unpleasant and weird around him. I'M A CUSTOMER. NOT HIS FRIEND OR BUDDY AND TWO DAYS LATER WHEN I THOUGHT HE WASNT THERE....HE WAS, AND TALKED LIKE WE WERE LONG LOST BEST FRIENDS. I always stop at this Cafe Ladro before going next door to Inspire for pilates torture. Because my classes are always in the evening, I tend to lean towards a decaf. Their decaf, iced americanos are the best I have had in the city. The coffee tastes kind of sweet, fruity and not a hint of burning. Please note I used the word 'experience' - to me, a coffee shop is about more than just coffee: it should serve as the hub of the neighborhood; a meeting place with friendly faces, delicious drinks, fresh pastries, and service with a smile. The best coffee shops should be full of laughter, warm conversation, and people generally enjoying themselves and their drinks. Ladro is all of these things and more. I hadn't planned on writing a review for Ladro - since I've been coming here nearly every day for almost 15 years, I was concerned my review may be too biased (spoiler alert: I love this place). The negative review from "GG" spurred me to respond, though, because I think his/her assessment is pretty unfair. First, a couple of fun factoids about Palm Springs, where the reviewer GG is from (courtesy of Wikipedia): 34.6% of the population is aged 45 to 64, and 26.5% are 65 years of age or older. The median age was 51.6 years. Now, I don't want to sound like an ageist (and truly, I have no idea how old GG is), but this review smacks a little of 'you kids stay off my lawn!" By Palm Springs standards, I could see the baristas being a little louder than the reviewer is accustomed to. But I don't think it's appropriate to throw out ad hominem attacks on the staff simply because you didn't have an AARP-approved coffee experience. In a town known for its chilly indifference to others, I find the fun, friendly (and admittedly, occasionally boisterous) nature of the baristas refreshing and welcoming. It's a coffee shop, not a mortuary. Coffee isn't a solemn experience. In summary, I think you'd be making a mistake if you skipped a trip to Ladro based on GG's experience - after all, like his profile quote says "Just cuz you don't like it, don't mean it's bad." We buy Ladro's beans whenever we stop in... (otherwise we can get them at Whole Foods!) as it is our staple for espresso in the morning at home! The coffee here is always good and creamy.. Fair-trade beans, anyone?-- so we can feel good about drinking our daily espresso, too. Nice lil spot in Fremont with wooden chairs outside to soak up some sun (or rain) these days... And we are usually here with Taro the pug so it's nice to be able to walk over here for our lovely espresso after a lunch with him at the restaurant a few doors down that lets him sit and dine with us :-) read more

Although I live in California, I grew-up in Seattle 4 blocks from the Queen Anne location. Unfortunately, it opened the year I left for college, so I haven't had a chance to go to this place as much as I would have liked. In brief, on each visit to Seattle I hit-up Cafe Ladro at least 2 times. They make amazing lattes (their foam is perfection), have great baristas who are nice and fast, and their prices are comparable with Starbucks or Peets Coffee. The main difference is that Cafe Ladro's lattes are 1000% better than Starbucks or Peets. Go there, you won't be disappointed. If you hit this joint up on a rare sunny day you can sit outside in a comfy Adirondack chair and pet the cute dogs as they walk by. read more

I like Ladro in a...I like Seattle coffee that's not Starbucks sort of way, but I honestly don't like the coffee. There's something about the taste that turns me off, so I never go there for coffee anymore. During the holidays I'm IN LOVE with their caramel apple cider and I always go here for their croissants which seem to be the yummiest, least dry in the neighborhood. Friendly staff, great coffee and an awesome location for some people watching. What more could you want for a Sunday afternoon coffee shop adventure? If you want some truly great coffee, I recommend getting an Aeropress since you can choose your coffee blend and it's made just for you. Yes, it is pricier than your standard cup of brew ($3 and some change), but I think it is worth it for the great flavor. A middle-aged man walked into Ladro and started loudly yelling and hovering over some poor woman he didn't know because she parked in the alley, Kate immediately stepped in-between him and the woman and told him that he can not talk to her like that, and that he needed to leave. Also saying to the effect "this is a non-issue" and "do you see how you're acting in this cafe right now?".... It was amazing. Without question one of my favorite coffee shops in town. The service varies between good and excellent and the coffee is generally top notch. This store wins between the 2 Queen Anne locations for atmosphere, staff and parking. Not only is parking available in the area, it's free! The store is generally clean with a nice living room feel to it and there's seating outside should you need to get your fill of people watching in. Pricing is reasonable and the drinks are prepared for you quickly. Even a 5 person line is gone in no time. The only thing keeping this from a 5th star would be the occasional disinterested employee and the few burnt lattes I've received. read more

The coffee is great and the pastries are good too! Baristas are friendly, efficient and always play good music. They have a back deck which is great when it's sunny. They also have a few free parking spots in back which can be accessed through the alley. If you come here regularly, buy a pre-paid coffee card because you will earn free drinks!! read more

My review is not as much a review of Ladro, because Ladro Rocks and so do all the employees, I've been going there for almost 15 years and never have had a bad experience. No, this review is more of a review of the ladro Yelp review from the person bashing the baristas and calling them Howler monkeys. I'm from Cali and I have to say, the cafes, down there are way different from up here, in many reason, but that is not what I am here to talk about. Down there, people are laid back, and take a whole different approach to coffee. Up here, people like to have fun and provide a fun place to get your coffee. Now apparently, by the way this person wrote the review, they are clearly screaming for attention, with their brand call outs (Pandora) and witty writing style reminiscent of so many blogs I've read. They want you, the users of Yelp, to know their importance, using Yelp as their own personal stage for commenting on their trivial experiences at establishments they visit. Let me just say this. If you want quiet, go to the library, if you want a corporate feel and order and discipline, go to Starbucks, or move to North Korea. Either way, leave service people alone and pay attention to the bigger things in life. For you, writing that review probably made you feel really bad ass inside, like you "told them", but in reality, people get in trouble or "talked to" for an occurrence that probably took place randomly and is not an ongoing thing. I love Ladro, I love every employee they have ever had, their coffee is killer and so is the food. I love the girls and their laughter and positive vibes and I love the dudes as well, good guys, especially the quiet dude and his zen-like approach to coffee making, that is one thing I do agree with the reviewer about. I live right down the street and one day I had gone to my bank and I only had $10 in there because my check had not cleared yet from work. So I really wanted a cup of coffee, so I went in to Ladro and I told the barista Gary that I was buying a cup of java with my last ten dollars. He insisted that I take my americano for free and then when I went to tip him, he pulled the two dollars out and said "Cmon, you're broke, save it for something else". I have been going back everyday since. Dustin is so sweet and as is the other guy who just got married. The espresso is always made perfectly. The outdoor seating in the sun is perfect for sitting with a friend, reaing a book or people watching. :) read more

Just okay. Line was a little wonky, I talked to 3 different people who were standing right next to each other to order my americano, and each time had to repeat myself. It felt a little ridiculous for such a small area. Americano was just fine, definitely not the best like other reviewers claim but not the worst. I will try again. read more
