Went here for the first time on Sunday, just moved to the neighborhood and was excited to check out my new local coffee shop. Agree with the rest of the reviews on here that the service from the girl who took my order was disappointing. I have worked in customer service and that is NOT the way you act...even if you are tired or having a bad day, you put on a smile and are cheerful to the customer. She was frowning, barely spoke and when she did her voice was barely audible. It felt really badly to be on the receiving end of this as a customer. Otherwise, the coffee was delicious and the barista who was making my drink was friendly and talkative. I will be back - hopefully that customer service was just a one-time thing! read more

I am a life long Seattleite (we know our coffee) and this is my favorite coffee shop! I have even managed to go to all three Cafe Umbrias in one day ;) That is right, Ballard, to Pioneer Square to Portland! In a short amount of time I have found this newest location to be my most beloved. You really should not skip this place if you are looking for a wonderful coffee experience. It really comes down to the quality of their bean for me. It is consistently good whether it is bagged or not. Also, they seem to really put good effort into their shop experience and service. I love the European coffee shop feel of this location in Ballard. The baristas make great lattes and the coffee has a nice sweetness with mild acidity to it and their pastries are made with yummy ingredients (aka lots of butter!). There are tables for you to study at or your group can snag a spot on the couch and read one of their coffee table books. If you're a people watcher, grab a seat by their window! Plenty of natural light in the space and it's not normally too loud, if you plan to read. They also have a TV if you want to catch the sports score while you work (the sound is never on, though). read more

I have visited this location multiple times. I love the coffee and the ambience there. The only issue there is the service. For example, today we ordered our coffee and were sitting waiting for it. It was loud in there a lot of people, music and the tv on so understandably it was hard to hear when our drink was ready. The second time our drink was called out the barista yelled at me and my partner that our drink was ready. She was incredibly rude- glaring and yelling at us. A few minutes later she took her really long hair out of her bun and flipped it around to put it backup- around the cups and coffee. I really do love this location, the coffee is great quality but the barista today November 20th around 3 p.m. was rude, unprofessional and unsanitary. read more

Some of the worst service I've ever had at a coffee shop. I came in asking for a medium cold brew, and the cashier mentioned they just ran out. I proceeded to ask if I could get a medium iced americano instead. The cashier asked if I wanted a 12 or 16 ounce, again I said medium because that's what the menu said. I then just said 16 to get on with it and then asked what kinds of iced tea they have. Black or green. I asked for a medium green tea, again what the menu said, and get a snarky response back saying it comes in 12 or 16 ounces. So I say 16 to just order it and get out of line. Overall, just really frustrating as I did nothing wrong but clearly the cashier couldn't care less. The americano and iced tea were both very good though. read more

After wandering through the market, I needed a latte. Enter, the soy vanilla latte from Caffe Umbria. The latte was pretty flawless, but what really got me excited were the plethora of sweetener options. They give you your latte with a spoon and you can add honey, agave, sugar, sugar substitutes, brown sugar, cinnamon...and more! Seriously, I'm pretty sure they have everything you could possibly want to sweeten your beverage. Sadly, when you order a soy vanilla latte you don't have much need for this so I could only stare at all of these options and plan for later visits. I love this place! It has a nice interior. It's open, high ceilings, big windows, and good decor. The latte I had was great. I came here to do work on my laptop and enjoyed the experience. The music wasn't too loud or annoying. I wish it smelled more like a coffee shop, but that's my only complaint. The cups they use are straight up cute af. I recommend this caffe. Wonderful coffee in an unbeatable location! I have had the opportunity to taste Umbria coffee in several cities, and have even had the chance to craft lattes with it myself. I can say easily that Caffe Umbria coffee was served perfectly here. The two espresso shots of gusto crema espresso were balanced with milk steamed to perfection to reveal just enough sweetness. It is in an unbeatable location and I would love to return here again soon. The water tap in the corner is also a wonderful bonus and includes sparkling water. For me, Umbria is the gold standard in coffee and espresso. The espresso is generally bold flavored and the cappuccino foam is amazing! My favorite is the cappuccino al cacao with a hint of cinnamon and one of the chocolate squares melted inside the cappuccino. All the staff seems pretty cool. They try to get you coffee quick and efficiently while being friendly and polite. If you want the best coffee Seattle has to offer, I without a doubt recommend Cafe Umbria. read more

Paid a visit to Caffee Umbria the first time I visited Ballard and I was absolutely impressed in every way. Walking in, I was immediately impressed with the beautiful decor and spacious area. Chandeliers, varied walls and large windows open up to the street. The decor is incredibly beautiful AND welcoming. At the very front of the store they have a small display of their coffee beans along with descriptions of each, and little bowls of beans so that you can see (and smell!) them. After looking around for a little bit, Mickey (the cafe owner) greeted me and helped me decide on a drink. I asked about any kind of specialty and he said that thanks to the cafe's genuine Italian heritage, they had a wide range of unique drinks. I eventually settled on the mocha because, as he said, it was dark chocolate and therefore considered "healthy." Which was funny. The mocha came out pretty quickly and it was absolutely stupendous. An exquisite blend of chocolate and espresso without ever being too sweet or too bitter. It was presented in a gorgeous cup and platter with a bit of garnish chocolate on the side. I later purchased a cup of their medium-dark roast for the $0.50 refill price, and heartily enjoyed that as well! Definitely recommend. read more

Well, this place is cute! The ambiance is beautiful; I love the chandeliers. The cashier was semi-pleasant, not rude but not exactly friendly either. I ordered an 8 oz chai latte and waited where everyone else seemed to be congregating. I noticed the baristas voice was EXTREMELY quiet given the circumstances. It was a Sunday with the Ballard market chaos going on right outside with a lot of the shoppers coming in for a morning pick me up. So basically, he really needed to speak up. I could barely hear him when he whispered "chai latte"... I had to ask to make sure so that I didn't make off with someone else's beverage. It was and so tasted it... it was... not good. Probably in the top 3 worst chai lattes I've had. It was extremely milky. There wasn't a good balance of chai and milk at all. Really a shame because this is just a few blocks from my new apartment. I guess the hunt continues. Pros: Ambiance, central location, staff not exactly rude (just kind of blah). Cons: No go on the chai lattes, cramped, need to speak up more when calling out drinks, not exactly friendly staff. I may come back and order a different kind of beverage to see if they can be redeemed. read more

Laying here am desperately tired but awake after being given a caffeinated beverage after asking for decaf at 5pm. She acted a little odd about it when I asked, maybe she didn't want to bother pulling out the decaf beans. While there the employees were talking really loud to each other about nights out across the cafe four about 20 minutes, really bad environment, was hoping to be able to work. I could tell after leaving I didn't drink decaf because I'm really sensitive to the level of caffeine in espresso- my heart rate jumps. Felt really lowkey, like a library, and really welcoming - usually when I'm the only person in a place (and so close to closing) I feel a weird subtle pressure/tension to leave asap, but this just felt like I was chilling with the guy behind the counter (curly haired dude) while i sipped my chai - good flavours but could've been hotter. Kind of luke warm. but the service vibes were so nice I honestly didn't even care. When I asked for the wifi password he didn't even make me feel like a nuisance! which is, i mean, rare.
