I really wanted to love Cake Gypsy. It's a cute place and the cupcakes LOOK awesome. But the cake is crumbly and falls apart as you try to eat it isn't enjoyable. I used to only frequent the Canton Cake Gypsy since it's right next door to my dentist (shout out to Canton Dental Center!), but have recently begun going to the Avon Cake Gypsy location as it's closer to my house. This location is just as awesome as its sister location with the same offering of goodies (cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, pupcakes, etc.) and the same great service! I stopped in on Valentine's Day for a half dozen cupcakes and even though they were slammed, every customer was treated like royalty and the staff did not hesitate to offer to go to the back to create everyone's cupcake of choice on the spot. I'm not sure about those reviewers who claim they've had dry or dense cupcakes because in the several years I've been going to Cake Gypsy, I've never had a bad cupcake. True coeliacs beware! Yes, Cake Gypsy may offer gluten free cupcakes....good for them...but do you know why you may still not be feeling well after eating them? It is the frosting....you can't buy a cupcake without frosting....and they use the same bag of frosting on your GF treats as they do on the regular baked goods. Yes, according to the staff "but we wipe off the tip"....apparently they don't realize how very little it takes for cross contamination to impact you. According to the Food and Drug Admin Gluten Free means the item must contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten. Do you know what that means? Wiping off the tip, when crumbs from a prior cupcake may be inside the tip means you may be consuming enough to get that auto-immune response going. As one of my family members noted "now I understand why I still feel crappy after eating these". Cake Gypsy, you can do better. Either a) allow people who need to be absolutely GF to buy their treats without frosting (not everyone even LIKES frosting), or b) keep a dedicated bag of frosting on hand....but definitely c) make sure your staff gets trained up a bit more on what needing to be GF really means to your customers, and the impact if your goods are not. read more

My oh my, what a nice little gem. This place popped up on my Yelp feed multiple times and the pictures were so enticing that I just had to try it! After a few missed turns, I finally got to the place. Let me just say, I was not disappointed! Cake Gypsy is located on Route 44 in the cute little shopping district, just before the Route 10 intersection. It's a bit hard (more than a bit) to see from the road, so I had to a take a few detours to actually get there. Upon going, I was excited to see that I was not misled by the pictures on Yelp. They did have a massive selection of cupcakes. I was able to browse around for a while and the staff was very patient. I was impressed because I stopped by after work at around 6 PM and there was still a large selection even though they close at 7. Additionally, the cupcake did not feel or taste stale at all! The cupcakes were simply delicious. It was not too sweet so I didn't feel nauseous by the end of a chocolate one. I also got a few truffles and chocolate covered Oreos which I have yet to try, but am sure they're delicious. (I figured the calories from a cupcake was enough for day. Yay self control!) The service was also great. My cashier appeared to be a high schooler, but was very patient and pleasant to talk to. She didn't mind me clunking my way around the counter trying to decide on what I want. She was also very accommodating after I had decided. I adore this place, possibly my favorite cupcake shop that I have found so far in CT (yes, I love cupcakes so much that I have a favorite cupcake shop). The cupcakes make me so happy. At other dessert shops I have found that cupcakes are either way too big and dry or too small and not worth the price. Every time I've come here, the cupcakes are the perfect size with the perfect amount of frosting (in my opinion) and wonderful flavor creations. Plus they have cupcakes for dogs, how great is that. I always try to buy one for my dog, as well. It's kind of out of the way for me but worth the drive because I love these cupcakes that much! There are a lot of sweet places around (Nora's cupcakes in canton and Spellbound in Avon) but this is my go to place all the time. The Granby store is fun looking and the cupcakes look very delicious. I even bought a dog pupcake that my pups enjoyed. Unfortunately, I got 2 different kinds of cupcakes and the cake itself was very dry for both. The amount of frosting overpowered the actual ratio to cake. If the cake were moist and not falling apart, it would have been a better experience. (Maybe it was an off day for the baker?) The raspberry filled cake broke apart in the middle when I unwrapped it, at the point where the filling hits. I will try it again in the future and hopefully will be able to rescore my stars. read more

We used Cake Gypsy for all of our desserts on our wedding day (7/29/17). Deanna and her team went above and beyond in making our dessert table absolutely incredible and memorable. We opted to just have a small cake for cutting, and it was always my dream to have a funfetti wedding cake, which Deanna was able to do for us. For our guests, we chose to have a large variety of mini cupcakes and cake pops. We told Deanna how many people we expected and she worked her magic, coming up with a perfect amount of mini cupcakes and cake pops for all of our guests. As expected, everything was delicious! Our guests LOVED that we didn't do a standard, boring, flavorless cake, like most weddings they've been to. When my friend heard that I started working in Avon her first sentence was "Oh my goodness you have to try Cake Gypsy". I hadn't heard of it before but it sounded magical so when I signed up to bring dessert to a potluck I knew just where to go. I am very indecisive and knew I'd be short on time so I checked out the website before going to scout out what I wanted. Thank goodness I did because when I got to Cake Gypsy there were so many flavors to choose from. Luckily they had everything I picked out from online available that day. I ordered the Ebony & Ivory (chocolate cake with vanilla butter cream frosting and a chocolate fan), Strawberry Shortcake (white cake with strawberry filling, rimmed with vanilla buttercream, white sprinkles with strawberry buttercream frosting and a candy strawberry on top), Signature Red Velvet (Moist & velvety cocoa-buttercream cake topped with our signature cream cheese icing and velvet cake crumbles), Nutella (chocolate cake with a delicious nutella frosting garnished with chocolate ganache and a Ferrero Roche candy), Pumpkin cheesecake (pumpkin cupcake frosted with our signature cinnamon cream cheese frosting), and Salted Caramel (caramel cupcake with salted caramel frosting garnished with a homemade salted caramel chocolate). Everything looked so amazing that instead of each having one each my five friends and I decided to divide them up and taste each one. They were all DELICIOUS. My friends across the country were going to a strawberry festival, and I was feeling jealous since I have been chained to my desk studying for a national exam since last month. I tried to find a place nearby me that sold something strawberry shortcake-like as a pick-me-up...and as a reason to leave my desk and go outside. The strawberry shortcake cupcake here is unlike any cupcake I have ever had. I'm used to cupcakes being incredibly dense, but this was the first time I have had a cupcake that had the texture of an angel cake. It was so light and billowy! These are one of my favorite cupcakes! I have come here many times and the staff is always so accommodating, welcoming and patient. I personally love the gingerbread (which has a cookie butter frosting) and caramel apple (which has a filling). There is a huge variety of cupcakes along with some seasonal cupcakes, cake pops, cookies and other treats. They even make doggie cupcakes and doggie cake pops. If you don't see a cupcake out, sometimes they can make it for you (and I believe they do cupcakes to order) if they have some in the back. The cupcakes themselves are so delicious and moist. I'm not sure if the industrial gold cupcake wrapper helps or what but I've left cupcakes out for a couple of days and they're never stale or crusty! The cupcake to frosting ratio is spot on. I'm not a fan when there's a huge glob of frosting on a cupcake. I brought these cupcakes into work one day and I have a few coworkers with gluten intolerance and vegans. Cake Gypsy has cupcakes for both! My coworker with the gluten intolerance said it was the best gluten free cupcakes she's ever had! Great hours too! Deanna and her team have done it again with the new location. I'm so happy to see that they're doing well enough to open a second one. The cupcakes are incredible. My kids consider it a very exciting outing if we head to the Cake Gypsy to pick out a dessert for the night. They also LOVE the milkshakes they started at the Canton location. You will never have a better milkshake! They're not inexpensive, but they are premium shakes and they are HUGE. One is probably enough for two kids (in their dreams I order them one apiece). We've had cannoli at both Mike's and Modern Pastry in Boston, and I can honestly say that Cake Gypsy's are much better (at least for my taste). The filling is not as sweet as the other places. I stopped in here on a whim one day when a friend was visiting. She mentioned cupcake and I immediately wanted one. I checked on Yelp to see what I could find and it was between this bakery and another. I opted for a cake pop and 4 cupcakes. The cake pop was the most amazing thing I have ever eaten. It was just the right amount of everything. One of the cupcakes I ate later one and it was chocolate, chocolate frosting with shavings on top. BUT WAIT. There was frosting in the middle of it as well. What a surprise. My husband received a vanilla cupcake and he said it was amazing as well. The second cupcake I bought wasn't as good as the first, but we had a heat wave and I had to keep them in the fridge so they didn't melt so that could have been why. All in all this place was amazing. A little on the pricier side ($2.00 for one cake pop) but they were delicious. These are the best cupcakes in Connecticut that I have ever had. The people are usually nice and the cupcakes never go down in quality. The cupcakes are soft, moist, sweet, and creative. The only bad thing is that if you get there late most of the best cupcakes are gone. I live all the way in Manchester and I would drive all the way to Avon just to get one cupcake. Once you start to eat a cupcake you can't not finish it because they are that good. The establishment has no gimmicks, they have straight up delicious cupcakes for a steal of a price. Anytime you want good cupcakes I encourage you to take the time to drive up there and get as many cupcakes as you can because they are soooo good.
