We came today and bought a lemon square, pb flourless square, apple cinnamon danish and a vanilla cupcake. In the past, I have experienced dry cupcakes at this cafe before but I really wanted one today so I got one to give it a try again. First bite of The vanilla cupcake , tasted like the fridge... and dry and stale cupcake. Definitely would not get this again! Apple cinnamon danish, the danish is soft and doughier than what danish should be, a flaky bite to it like a croissant almost... but this isn't it! The filling Apple cinnamon has a nice flavor but the pasty needed some serious refinement. Pb chocolate flourless bar was pretty good! It always tasted the same! Lemon square tasted ok. Some days are better than the other. Not consistent with their baked goods for sure. read more

My friend and I met here to discuss our book club one Friday morning. The coffee drink selection was great, I had a vanilla latte. I also had some type of egg white and spinach sandwich. We were on our way to Rhode Island and we needed to stop on the road for a cup of coffee. Cake Shop Cafe was a surprising gem that we found and I really wish this was located near my house. I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. It is the perfect spot to sit, sip a cup of coffee, enjoy their hot sandwiches, and chat (or study!). If this cafe was near my college, I would've been a regular customer! When I first walked in, there were so many desserts that I wanted to try, but I just knew that I will be full for the rest of our trip and probably will not enjoy much of our itinerary. However, I just HAD to order one dessert and one of their hot sandwiches because the smell of it, along with their coffee, just feels so pleasant. Also, everything was pretty cheap - it definitely was the right thing to do. I ordered their Sweet Matcha drink with almond milk and it was probably my favorite matcha drink I've ever had. I finished it before my sandwich was ready. The sandwich I ordered was their bacon & pesto and it truly did not disappoint. They were not stingy with the pesto! Pulling the sandwich apart and revealing the melted mozzarella was quite satisfying. Also, the bread they use is focaccia! The chocolate chip cookie was full of chocolate chips. I had never noticed this place before! I frequently park right by it to go to nearby businesses (especially Christopher's Homemade Ice Cream). So when my friend brought me here I was totally surprised. Lots of yummy drink, sandwich and baked goods selections!!! Located off the beaten track in a converted brick warehouse of a strip mall. Over-the-counter ordering. Huge coffee and hot drinks list. Pastries in glass display cases. Sandwiches available too. Cozy seating (not during covid season) in plush chair and couches along a brick wall. Chocolate croissant: Good flakiness, great butteriness, okay chocolate. Additions of white sugary topping and thin chocolate drizzle added visually but might have distracted from the main event. A really good croissant at its core that might be better if simpler, but that's purely subjective. Blueberry muffin: Very interesting texture more similar to gingerbread than your typical smooth muffin mix. Light on blueberries but strong on dough flavor. Flourless peanut butter bar: This one was the ultimate in mixed feelings: fantastic dark chocolate frosting, but the crumbly base had the feel of a bulletin board. Coffee: Good. Chai Tea Latte: Good. Three-and-a-half is what it should be. Tempted to round down because the fives seem inflated (maybe they've never been to Boston), but I don't want to be that guy, so an inflated four it is. The Cake Shop Cafe is a very convenient stop for me to meet up with my family without driving all the way down to Providence. I've been a handful of times, and I suspect I will return again and again. There is a lot to love about this cute little bakery, and some of the things that make it truly great, become problematic in execution. The brownies are a perfect example. All butter brownies. Lots of chocolate. Just enough flour to hold them together. Large. In charge. Delicious. However, the refrigerator case they are stored in results in brownies that are hard as rocks. If you struggle enough, you can cut through it with one of those knives, but it feels as if you might break the porcelain plate in the process. But take that brownie home, let it come up to temperature in the car, and be patient... it could very well be a five star brownie. If only there was a way for the bakery to periodically rotate their inventory so that baked goods that are sold to be enjoyed on premises, could actually be enjoyed on premisses. Yes, you can eat that brownie on the spot. But you really shouldn't. The same holds for their fruit bars. I'm working on finding my way around the menu, and I might be finally zeroing in on something I love. It's not the focaccia pizza of the day, alas. If you order a sandwich on a croissant, you should ask if they could toast it for you, because warming up that croissant would really improve it dramatically. Maybe the answer is the egg sandwich on the biscuit? As far as sweets go, the chocolate eclair straight from the refrigerator case has been the biggest winner to date. The cream puff looks amazing. And it should. There is clearly a lot of talent in this bakery. The challenge is figuring out how to best enjoy it when you don't have time to let the desserts temper. read more

Nice little cafe located in the Mills plaza. Really good coffee and other tasty pastries and sandwiches, the homemade pop tarts are a big hit in my household. They also make some excellent cakes. I custom ordered one for my wife's birthday and it was really good both the cake and icing. It was filling without being too rich. Also it was a surprise so they let someone else pick it up for me and the process itself was pretty smooth. Clean storefront, good hours, delicious cupcakes! This is a really cute place to come and sit and relax if you have a lot of time to enjoy your treats. If you're used to a pop in and out quick place like Dunkin' Donuts you may find you're waiting a little bit longer. But I think it's worth it. I would give five stars if the filling was different than the topping. Once you pierce the cupcake and put the same buttercream filling inside, it just becomes too much. For example, when you watch cupcake wars the filling and icing are always different. The filling is a jelly or some thing that adds moisture. A curd, or a mouse, or a ganache. As you can see from photo two there's almost no cake chew ratio to fat. A light peanut butter ganache or marshmallow fluff ganache would work wonderfully. read more

Found this place on Instagram this morning. A picture of one of their drinks came up and it looked amazing, so we made a 15 minute drive to Worcester to check this place out. Upon entering, immediately you see how cool the place is inside. There's nothing better than businesses located in old mills. Something about the exposed wood beams and high ceilings really make for a great coffee shop. I got an iced blueberry coffee, my girlfriend got an iced chai tea latte and a cream puff, and we got a pupcake to bring home for the dogs. The blueberry coffee was awesome. Natural blueberry taste, not overly syrupy like some places. My girlfriend raved over the latte and cream puff. The cream puff was massive. Our dogs sure did enjoy the pupcake (though it was eaten so quickly I'm wondering if they even tasted it). But I'll take that as a good sign and say that it was also delicious. To top it off, 2 medium drinks and 2 handmade pastries only set us back $14. How can you beat that at a coffee shop/bakery that's independently owned? We will definitely be back.
