When I started the search for a wedding cake, I was shocked to hear that many of the bakeries charged $7 to $9 per person for their cakes. A-CA WHAT? Enter Long. Former IT technician and now genuis cake whiz. Every day he whips up light and fluffy cakes with REAL European buttercream. They are absolutely delicious (in fact, I have already dug into my top cake round before it even made it into the freezer...oops!) And the best part, the cost of the cake (depending on how intricate it is) is about $3.50 per slice. SOLD. I went to him about three weeks before the wedding, gave him a few pictures of the design I had in mind and he drew up a cake diagram on the spot. He gave us a choice of three fillings: pineapple, raspberry jam and mocha. There's no crazy jamoca-almond-fudge-unicorn sprinkles here. He does the basics but he does them very well. Since we were so close to the wedding we had to pay our entire payment in one installment but we did not mind at all. We were just glad that he was able to take us in since we were so last minute. Long was super friendly and very excited for our cake. Apparently most of the cakes he does are for very traditional couples so he was very excited to add some flair to his confectioneries. I delivered flowers to him about three days before the wedding and he was able to artfully arrange them. He delivered on time and on budget and with a big smile to boot. AMAZING cakes. Not only are they beautiful to look at, they're so delicious. I ordered a 10 inch round cake on wednesday, for pickup on saturday afternoon. I was worried that Long wouldn't be able to accomodate (we've been craving a really delicious mocha buttercream cake), but there was no problems at all: cake would be ready by saturday afternoon. This is a home-based business, but it was obviously doing very well. There were a few people either picking up cakes, ordering cakes, or delivering to a party/wedding. They had photos of previous cakes in the waiting/pickup area and they were stunning. They showed me my cake. Oh.My.God. It was so beautiful! And best is that it's all in buttercream: no fondant or sugar paste or anything. I was floored at just how gorgeous it looked. And it tastes even BETTER than it looks. These are lovely, light cakes - moist and soft and just dissolves in the mouth. The buttercream is amazing: no shortcuts, no cheap stuff (i.e. butter flavoured crisco crap), and not too sweet. I ordered mocha buttercream, (filling between the layers and the frosting on the sides) which was flavoured with a coffee liqueur. Our Vietnamese family has ordered cakes from Long for years now (simply because he is the most well-known in the Vietnamese community for special occasion cakes). The cakes are beautifully decorated and tastes pretty good compared to cakes at most bakeries. Both his cake and the buttercream aren't too sweet, which I love. However, the cake is a little drier than I would like. The one thing I dislike the most about ordering from Long is the service from his sister that answers the phone. I'm fluent in Vietnamese and have always been polite to her, but she's been rude to my family members and I on multiple occasions (mostly her tone and her attitude when she answers questions). The biggest and only regret from our wedding day was getting a cake from Long. I honestly feel like these other reviews must be fake because we had the absolute worst experience! We requested a navy wedding cake and on the day of our wedding, a NEON (and I mean literally NEON) blue cake was delivered. It was the ugliest wedding cake I had ever seen, everyone was distraught! Had it not been our wedding day, we absolutely would have gone back and gotten a refund immediately. Have been ordering Cakes by Long for a few years now and it has been consistently good and beautifully designed. They are also quick with their orders. I've ordered a day before and was able to pick up the next day. I haven't had bad customer service with them and it's probably because I'm able to speak Vietnamese, so there isn't a language barrier. I've ordered the pandan cake (green cake), mocha cream cake, and their jelly cake. Lately, they haven't been accepting orders for the jelly cake, which I am bit a disappointed because that is my famiy's favorite. Hopefully, they'll start making them again soon. The cakes are not so sweet and you can request the designs you'd like on the cakes. The bakery is family-owned and there isn't an actual shop. They added an extension to their house and that's where their business is at. So if your GPS shows you the way to a house, don't freak out, you are at the right place. There is a separate door to the right of the main house door. Ring the door bell and someone will come open the door for you. It's a bit skeptical, but their business is legit. I've also attended a wedding that have ordered their wedding cake from Long. The bride and groom highly recommended placing a wedding cake with them as they take good care during the delivery process and setting it up. My family and I have been long-time clients of Long for YEARS. If we need a cake for larger family gatherings (birthdays, anniversaries, etc.) then BOOM = Cakes by Long is the answer! The cake itself is unbelievably light (almost like a spongecake) and the buttercream is 100% pure butter; we ALWAYS get the mocha-flavored buttercream because it is THAT heavenly and delicious. I think the cake tastes best when it has a little time to sit out but it's not completely room temperature yet and the buttercream still has a slight bite. We even ended up using Cakes by Long for our wedding cake which was a simple 2-tier cake + a few extra sheet cakes. The wedding took place in Richmond and we had friends pick up the cakes from his home (which is Long's fully operating bakery) the morning of the wedding. Since the cake was carefully packaged, everything arrived in Richmond all in one piece! Keep in mind that since Long is pretty much a one-man operation working out of his home and a large portion of his clientele is Vietnamese, the professional etiquette might be a little different/unusual for some customers. LONG'S CAKES ARE AMAZING. (Italicize amazing) And the interesting thing is you kind of just have to know or find out about this place somehow rather than seeing a huge sign on a bakery reading, "Cakes by Long" or something. It is a family owned business and all the business happens inside an actual family home in a neighborhood. So you'll find yourself walking into a house rather than an actual bakery. Long has different kinds of cakes you can choose from. The selection is quite limited though but the classic is the cake with buttercream. I do kind of remember some of the other selections but the only other selection I'm sure of is the Vietnamese gelatin cake. I've been getting cakes from him for any birthday occasion and Christmas (your typical log cake) ever since I can remember my first time walking as a small child. His cakes are expensive, but definitely worth it if you want legitimate, amazing cakes that are beautifully crafted as well. And by expensive, I mean a cake can be over $50 (even nearing $100). What makes the cakes here, is definitely the butter cream Long uses on his cakes. If you get the typical buttercream cake, it will be surrounded on the sides (and the center filling) with a kind of coffee/mocha buttercream and the top surface where the designs and wordings will be is some kind of plain white butter cream (sorry for my lack of knowledge on a cake I've been eating for more than 10 years). My favorite thing about his cakes is probably the coffee/mocha butter cream. I could eat a block of that stuff. But that probably wouldn't be too good for me huh.. Anyways, if you're used to very sweet "American" cakes, then you might not like Long's cakes because they might seem bland to you. Due to my time constraint, I could only taste the frosting that would be used. I simply chose one of his signature cakes that he makes. My only issue is the location of the bakery. Since it is at his house, its difficult to determine which is the business. I was looking for an actual retail building, not a house. Pandan is that floral/vanilla like flavor thats unique to Southeast asia. It's that green cake that you sometimes see at Eden center. My wife and I love all things pandan.
