Ombré cake
Kimi S.

Cakes by Long is one of the Vietnamese Community's best kept secrets! When I started the search for a wedding cake, I was shocked to hear that many of the bakeries charged $7 to $9 per person for their cakes. A-CA WHAT? Enter Long. Former IT technician and now genuis cake whiz. Every day he whips up light and fluffy cakes with REAL European buttercream. They are absolutely delicious (in fact, I have already dug into my top cake round before it even made it into the freezer...oops!) And the best part, the cost of the cake (depending on how intricate it is) is about $3.50 per slice. SOLD. I went to him about three weeks before the wedding, gave him a few pictures of the design I had in mind and he drew up a cake diagram on the spot. He gave us a choice of three fillings: pineapple, raspberry jam and mocha. There's no crazy jamoca-almond-fudge-unicorn sprinkles here. He does the basics but he does them very well. Since we were so close to the wedding we had to pay our entire payment in one installment but we did not mind at all. We were just glad that he was able to take us in since we were so last minute. Long was super friendly and very excited for our cake. Apparently most of the cakes he does are for very traditional couples so he was very excited to add some flair to his confectioneries. I delivered flowers to him about three days before the wedding and he was able to artfully arrange them. He delivered on time and on budget and with a big smile to boot. I could not be happier with my interactions with his company. To those who choose to proceed with Long: *Please call ahead to make an appointment, since he works from home he has a flexible schedule and is not always there. He also does not take appointments on Fridays and Saturdays since he is busy baking away. He is a one man operation. *If you are not comfortable working with someone whose English is a second language do not pass go. I do not speak a lick of Vietnamese but I found him easy to understand but I could see some of my friends getting a little bit frustrated with communication.

Yes, that's ALL BUTTERCREAM,

AMAZING cakes. Not only are they beautiful to look at, they're so delicious. I ordered a 10 inch round cake on wednesday, for pickup on saturday afternoon. I was worried that Long wouldn't be able to accomodate (we've been craving a really delicious mocha buttercream cake), but there was no problems at all: cake would be ready by saturday afternoon. This is a home-based business, but it was obviously doing very well. There were a few people either picking up cakes, ordering cakes, or delivering to a party/wedding. They had photos of previous cakes in the waiting/pickup area and they were stunning. They showed me my cake. Oh.My.God. It was so beautiful! And best is that it's all in buttercream: no fondant or sugar paste or anything. I was floored at just how gorgeous it looked. And it tastes even BETTER than it looks. These are lovely, light cakes - moist and soft and just dissolves in the mouth. The buttercream is amazing: no shortcuts, no cheap stuff (i.e. butter flavoured crisco crap), and not too sweet. I ordered mocha buttercream, (filling between the layers and the frosting on the sides) which was flavoured with a coffee liqueur. THe top frosting was a plain buttercream, to better show off the amazing design. Total cost for a 10 inch cake that could have easily fed 15 or more people? $40. UNBELIEVABLE. Order your cake at Long. They have all sorts of different flavours (the next one I'm going to order is pandan with young coconut filling. MNNN MNNN GOOD.)

My engagement cake. He spelled my name wrong. It's supposed to be Phuong Linh

Our Vietnamese family has ordered cakes from Long for years now (simply because he is the most well-known in the Vietnamese community for special occasion cakes). The cakes are beautifully decorated and tastes pretty good compared to cakes at most bakeries. Both his cake and the buttercream aren't too sweet, which I love. However, the cake is a little drier than I would like. The one thing I dislike the most about ordering from Long is the service from his sister that answers the phone. I'm fluent in Vietnamese and have always been polite to her, but she's been rude to my family members and I on multiple occasions (mostly her tone and her attitude when she answers questions). It's very difficult to speak directly to Long because she won't let you.

His cakes are heavenly!!!! I got the pineapple cake for my wedding and the guests absolutely loved it. Simple and popping with flavor. I had a hard time picking the flavor during tasting as all the cakes and flavors were absolutely delicious!! The buttercream in his cakes is not overpowering with sugar as many cakes in the market. Light fluff semi sweet perfect to the tastebuds.. He is the GO TO GUY for cakes in the DMV area.

Hidden gem wedding cake in DMV area. They are truly traditional, original wedding cake. Long is amazing with his work. His wedding cakes are from different style. He can help you to decor the flowers with no labor cost( just need to provide him the flowers ahead of time). Don't be surprise if GPS location show the address of a house. You will be surprise by the interior. It is lovely, clean, professional workplace and very nice art form. I personally love the wedding cake flavor. It is not too sweet. He has 3-4 flavors to choose from and the best as I remember correctly is the Mocha one. We are happy with his work. He is very straightforward and will answer all the questions and concerns that you have. I ordered a modern white wedding cake from him for my wedding 04.27.19 and everyone loved it. Everyone enjoyed it.

He made the cake for our wedding (I'm desi). Picture is attached. He was easy to work with, delivered on time at the venue, DELICIOUS mocha cake. I loved the cake so much, I got my baby shower cake from him last year too (less than $100 for 60 people). If he was any closer to where I live, I would get all my cakes from him!

The best cake i ever had!! + Great service. According to my friend Cakes by Long only takes order and don't have the cake pre-made. It was a day before father-day and normally i have to place an order for the cake 2 days in advance, however i totally forgot to place the order, so the day before father day i call in and tried to place an order around 2pm. The owner Mr Long pick up the phone and took my order. The cake was fantastic, not only it taste good but the design is very nice and detail. THE BEST I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! IT IS LIKE A PIECE OF ART (eatable one ^_^)

Delicate Hot Chocolate…read more I have long been an admirer of fine hot chocolate. Traditionally, I would visit Starbucks or a contemporary coffeehouse, only to receive what often felt like mocha syrup blended with steamed milk--pleasant, perhaps, but rarely memorable. This morning marked my first visit to Tatte Bakery & Café in Old Town Alexandria where the hot chocolate proved to be an unexpected delight. The associate explained that it was prepared with semisweet chocolate and warm milk. Intrigued, I ordered a small and chose to enjoy it outdoors. The price was refreshingly reasonable, while the bakery's bright interior and refined ambiance created an inviting first impression. My drink arrived within approximately five minutes, presented elegantly in a cup and saucer. The temperature was perfectly warm--comforting without being excessively hot--and the overall presentation was quietly sophisticated but has room for improvement. Then came the taste.... The texture was exceptionally silky and smooth, with no grainy residue, excessive sweetness, or bitter aftertaste. It was rich without being heavy and indulgent without becoming overwhelming. Even better, it left behind no awkward crown of foam. I have enjoyed hot chocolate in Sicily, where the experience was quite literally a cup of melted chocolate--decadent, dense, and almost dessert-like. Tatte's interpretation was more delicate and restrained, yet equally satisfying in its own way. Tatte has now earned first place in my personal ranking. There is, however, still an opportunity to elevate the service experience. A cloth napkin and small spoon presented alongside the drink would add a more polished touch, while a subtle soupçon of finely shaved chocolate would enhance both the visual presentation and the final sip. Overall, I award Tatte's hot chocolate an A-. I look forward to seeing whether it can achieve an even higher distinction upon my next visit.

Let's face it. I like Tatte a latte!…read more Beautiful pastry case, inviting treats, Parisian-style cafe. It's a bit inconvenient that you pay at the counter but pick up hot drinks at the bar. When it's crowded you can barely hear your name. We stopped in the late afternoon and it was cool and empty. I had a delicious matcha latte and some lovely baked treat. Thanks a latte, Tatte!

If you're a true sweets lover, Midnightreats is absolutely worth the stop…read more These are not your light, airy, grab-and-go cookies. They are thick, dense, warm, and very indulgent. The kind where one cookie can easily be shared (or not lol ). They're rich and sweet, so if you're someone who loves a heavy dessert that feels like a treat-treat, you'll be in heaven. Easily a 10/10 for that category. What really stood out to me was the variety of flavors. I tried the strawberry matcha cookie and was honestly surprised by how much I liked it. It had a really nice balance of flavors and didn't feel gimmicky at all. It's always a risk trying something a little different, but this one definitely paid off. Another thing I appreciated was that they had a section of cookies discounted because they were made the night before. I love when places do this...it's a great way to try more flavors without spending a lot, and honestly, the cookies were still really good. Service-wise, the cashier was super helpful and patient, especially when it came to explaining flavors and giving recommendations. That always makes a difference when you're staring at a case full of options and can't decide.
