We recently had to throw out slices of cake that tasted like dried crayons from two other Astoria bakeries that shall not be named. Out of desperation, we reached out to friends for recommendations. They all named Cakes by Nerwan. So we walked over there today and bought classic vanilla and chocolate birthday cake cupcakes. By the time we got home, they were the perfect temperature and consistency, and they were delicious! You can't fake buttercream, and this frosting was the real thing. When we sliced open one of each to share, we saw that the frosting dipped down into the center of the cupcake, meaning... more frosting! Recently I stopped by again and felt an update is warranted. I had a craving for cupcakes and they were conveniently open. I bought the pistachio, rose, and raspberry cupcakes. They were fully stocked on cupcakes and had lots of flavors. Perhaps the cupcakes were just freshly baked and I caught them at the right time. I have come before and they usually don't have the rose flavor. The different cupcake frosting flavors were good and had a nice light flavor. The yellow cake was the same for all the cupcakes and tasted good with the frosting. Overall, even though this is not on the top of my list, I would have to say this is good enough and I would return if I am in the neighborhood. Note that there is a credit card surcharge. read more

I remember looking into this place months ago for a friend's baby shower. Ultimately I decided to go with another bakery because 2 dozen custom cupcakes or a 8-10 inch cake seemed just a stitch out of my price range. But they're not out of price range if I still want to come by for my own damn cupcake lol. I was sucked in because I saw online pictures of unicorns and mermaids and stuff that looked wow factor. I think the regular cupcakes are somewhere between $3-4 each and the specialty ones are a bit more. Came in and was pleasantly surprised that they don't just do gimmicky stuff and have really amazing sounding flavors. Decisions decisions. My friend went with the cannoli and I believe I asked for the nutella but she accidentally gave me the kit-kat cupcake. I'm not complaining because I was seriously torn between those exact two. We split our cupcakes in half and tried each. Cannoli I liked better because the buttercream just melted in your mouth. The cake was so moist. The kit-kat was a little stiffer in cake and icing but I liked the flavors still going on. Probably one of the better bakeries I've been to in awhile and its absolutely freaking adorable inside. Cute little bakery in Astoria. We picked up a cake for a Birthday that needed to serve 12 people. The cake was decorated with care and precision. My only wish is that this place had more options. It's called cakes by nerwan, but there was only 1 cake for us to choose from on a Saturday. There were way more cupcake options, which looked delicious by the way. We also wanted to write a "happy birthday" message on the top of the cake, but we were told that the owner only does that and she was out of town, so the customization couldn't happen. The employee who did work here was helpful and sweet, just wish we had something to add to the cake since it was for a birthday. Everyone loved the cake. Apparently they did such a good job surviving the pandemic that they can afford to insult and argue with a return customer. After we liked the job they did for our 2 year old's cake back in February, we asked on relatively short notice (~1 week) if they would take an order for our 5 year old's cake. After no response following an online inquiry after two days, we called and they confirmed yes, they were still taking orders for the coming weekend. We submitted the design and thought we were on our way. Two days after that, we get emailed an invoice that gave us about three hours (!) to pay in full, otherwise the order would be cancelled. We weren't called, told to expect an email invoice, or otherwise notified that we needed to settle up ASAP in order to fulfill the order, so we missed the deadline. We spoke to them immediately seeing the email two hours later and were told: - Yes, two hours past the invoice deadline was now too late to fulfill the order for the party, which was three days away - "We don't chase anyone" - They are so busy, in fact, that they just accepted an order for that same weekend, contradicting that they wouldn't get ours done in time - It wasn't their fault that the order was on such short notice. Apparently it wasn't their fault they accepted the order and agreed to the date after a phone conversation and exchange of design? - That we should've been more timely in monitoring for an email we didn't know was coming. Note that we had no such contingency on our February order, which followed similar timelines. We're from an extended multi-generation family of lifelong Astoria residents with ties to several local business, so we're disappointed by the attitude from a local small business we wished to support. It's one thing to reneg on an order that was accepted, but it's quite another to argue on the phone that it was our fault with zero willingness to work towards a solution. Suffice to say we won't fathom returning and would advise against the same to anyone else. read more

This review is for cupcakes they did for our wedding; I've never actually been to their shop. The cupcakes looked pretty and were pretty good--very sugary but I guess that's what cupcakes are. But my problem was with communication--it was really hard to reach them via email or phone to work out the details. It was a bit of an ordeal and just additional stress. This place has the aesthetic. Really cute place. The cupcakes are overpriced, considering that they are not much cheaper than Sprinkles cupcakes, cost more than Georgetown cupcakes, but are way smaller in size and taste more bland than both. But the real problem was that when I ordered the iced coffee, regular coffee was just added to a packaged cup of ice straight from the freezer. The ice barely melted, so while it was definitely cold, I didn't have much coffee to drink. Also, iced coffee is not hot coffee thrown onto ice. It's prepared beforehand. It's brewed stronger because ice is added before storing it in cool temperature, to be taken out of the fridge before being served. The staff seemed friendly enough. Hope they provide a better experience for customers with their food. read more

Terrible communication. I needed a cake so I inquired almost 2 weeks in advance, since I wasn't receiving an email I called for a follow up twice. First time they said to give it more time since whoever is responding to emails just went to their office to do so. Second time I called they said they will let them know that I have called. Finally get an email only for them to say that they aren't taking new orders since they are out of the country. If they are out of the country then why not tell your employees to communicate that to us instead of giving me the run around. Also how are you out of the country if your employee said that you are in your office responding to emails? Waste of time, do not trust these people. Update: Since owner says this is misleading then let me clarify. I never said that they didn't respond within the 24 hours. Since I am pressed on time, I did send an inquiry and I followed up the next day with a phone call to make sure it went thru. Person who answered the call told me that once I submit the inquiry that it should be received and give it another day. They took my name down to let whoever responds to emails know that I have called. Second time I called they told me that the person is answering emails. Never once from the first or second time I called did they mention the chef is out of the country. If they would of told me then I would of moved on and understood. But I was being misled which led me to lose more days of me needing a cake. Don't email me apologizing saying that you're sorry and don't want me upset, even offering a discount just to respond this way to me here in public.
