I really should have believed the reviews. There is a Starbucks literally 200 feet away but I like trying out smaller businesses so I thought I'd give this place a chance. Seriously disappointing. The staff was friendly enough but super concerned about their personal conversation and not me or the customer behind me. I decided on the Milky Way Mocha which is a standard mocha but with caramel. This honestly tasted like a bad cup of hot chocolate. It literally was straight sugar, I couldn't taste coffee/espresso at all. I ended up throwing half of it out. I also got a slice of lemon poppyseed bread that initially looked like it might've been made in house but after unwrapping it, it seemed more like it came in a loaf from Sam's Club or Costco and was sliced and wrapped in plastic wrap. #fatjared say...this is a local place that has a couple of locations, and this one was a lot of fun and super cute! Another local coffee shop down before I leave Chico! I was smiling before ordering because of the picture in the bathroom! Very small amount of seats (probably 20 at most) and only 2 people working which was all they needed. The baristas were friendly and knowledgable! I needed a nap, so I did NOT go with a cold brew! They had big dispensers of 4 different kinds of coffee, and there decaf house blend was ok. They do have an option to get an iced coffee with frozen coffee cubes in it which is something I love! My small complaint is that back in the hall of the bathroom you could see an open closet with all the cleaning supplies in it. Not the most appetizing thing. They did have a bunch of options of food available, but also were not fresh and wrapped in plastic wrap. I did see a burrito made fresh which was huge and looked good, but not a fan of just a random open closet. Overall if you want a quiet place with friendly staff and a wide array of choices to taste some stuff this is a great place to go. Nothing significant to separate it and get 5 stars, a couple of small things, but for a local coffee shop def worth a visit!! Well done Cal Java!! read more

My latte is good but I'm not sure about this brick of a blueberry bread I picked up. It is so dense, almost like bread pudding. I didn't like it all. I wonder if they had it delivered by some bakery. I'll come back for lattes, though. Baked goods will require extremely careful considerations next time. read more

Cappuccino was ok, not good or great, also not very hot. My Yelp ratings of coffee shops is reflective of the quality of their drinks, usually espresso, often a cappuccino. Location was not great, and store was dirty with nearly every table in need of a wipe down. Came in the afternoon when it wasn't busy, so surprised to find it so messy. Cal Java used to be a great place, has really taken a dive over the years. read more

I was a bit confused and upset about their stamp card system because even though their are several cal javas in chico, they each have their own one. That being said their coffee drinks have always been delicious and made exactly how I order it. I always feel ridiculous ordering drinks with light ice, but my teeth are really sensitives and too much makes them hurt. They have never once been rude about it and have always given me just a few cubes. read more

I stopped by to grab a small coffee, I ordered from the young lady behind the counter and she said $2.35!!! I was sure that I heard her wrong, there is no sane way that 10 oz of drip brewed coffee could possibly cost $2.35... I questioned her " are you sure that's right? $2.35 for a small drip coffee?" "Yup" she responded "That's nearly more than a venti drip coffee at Starbucks" I responded which earned me a dismissive shrug. So I left and decided to brew my own coffee at home for free. As a side note, I have 13 years of experience in the business of coffee and I know how much it costs for wholesale coffee, asking $2.35 for small coffee is insane! A pond of ground coffee makes roughly 300 oz of brewed coffee. Cal Java paid around $6.00-7.00 per pound for the coffee (on the high side) and so the cost per small coffee to them is approximately $.26 cents and they are asking nearly 9X that! That's totally outrageous and I will definitely never come here again. read more

Sure, it's small and a little cramped at times, but the service is always the best. The coffee is great as it's roasted right here in town. It's the highlight of my week when I get a chance to grab a cup and the paper and sit down for 1/2 an hour here. And open up my netbook as well! read more

I grew up coming to this coffee shop and never had a bad experience. The baristas are always very friendly!

So, I know this is a long-standing local place and I appreciate that fact but when a customer has a less-than-satisfactory experience, that really tends to make no difference at all. I ran out of espresso beans at home but wanted an iced white mocha and decided to come here, rather than my normal routine of going to Peet's in Raley's. The girl who took my order had the most blank expression on her face and just stared at me while I ordered, bordering on being hostile. I mean, at least smile or say 'great choice' or something. It was weird and uncomfortable. While she was taking my order, the other girl behind the counter must have made some sort of mistake as she uttered a loud expletive, in front of me and my toddler daughter. Seriously?! I didn't have to deal with Miss Personality at the counter after that, and Miss Potty Mouth actually brought me my drink, which was quite nice, cursing aside. I wish I could say the drink was tasty and made it all better but, agh, it was.......bland and just not pleasing at all. I carried it around running errands, trying to finish it because I paid for it but ended up throwing probably half of it away. It just wasn't good. I like their ice cream at night and I'll give it another go with maybe a different drink but more of the same customer service and I'm out for good. You really need to train your baristas on tea as well as coffee. They don't even know that black tea has caffeine in it. They stood right there and argued with me that your chai tea latte does NOT have sugar in it. Read the back of the carton you pour it out if sweetheart- it's loaded with sugar. You seem to grave some little click of snotty little girls working your counter and I can assure you it's costing you customers. Not only do your products suck, your wait staff is snotty and they don't know what they're talking about. After not even being able to answer a simple question about what types of tea you offer, I was subjected to some little teeny bopper with an attitude. You may want to clue your workers into some basic knowledge on tea. BLACK TEA IS NOT HERBAL THEREFORE IT CONTAINS CAFFEINE. Oh, one more thing. Those ridiculous little tea bags you put your loose leaf teas in do not work. It completely spilled the tea into my cup and I had to go back to your establishment to have them strain the tea into another cup without the loose leaf tea going everywhere. The girls must not have been paying attention to your demo during the training You provided on that either. All around EPIC FAIL. It really is not that difficult. I really love their coffee and iced tea selections! Today I went in for an iced coffee and was surprised by their cool (no pun intended) idea of making large frozen balls of coffee so it doesn't get watered down! The only suggestion I would make is to make these "coffee bombs" a bit smaller, as I couldn't close the lid to my cup. I didn't even get to the drink the coffee! I'm visiting California from Colorado. I figure, California, so many people live there, there has to be some good coffee roasters and craft stores here! I open good ol' Yelp and search for nearby coffee shops. Cal Java came up nearby and they had "roasters" in their name. Well shoot, this seems to be a place that will know what they are doing! Oh man, was I ever so wrong. I walked in and was greeted by dingy, dirty looking seating area that had "back country diner" written all over it. This wasn't going too good. I walked to the counter and saw they had a large selection of whole bean coffees to buy, but only drip coffee or espresso drinks to purchase. I just stood there with a confused look on my face and then a worker came out of the back and asked if I would like anything. I inquired if all they had was drip coffee or if they offered any single-serve type brewing. She looked at me and said she wasn't sure what I was talking about. I offered a suggestions of a Chemex or a pour over / V60. She shook her head and said they have Toddy iced coffee. I said no, I was looking for hot coffee. She said she didn't know what I was talking about and went to the back and brought back with her another worker. I repeated my questions and she also offered me an iced coffee. I told them these were special brewing types that I would have assumed that a company with "roaster" in their name would at the least know what these brewing methods were. I was OK if they didn't have them, but to not even know what a Chemex was at a coffee shop I assumed was craft I couldn't take it. I thanked them for their help and said I would leave and find some place else. I am sad about this. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but this is either a case of bad training or just ignorant owners. If you read this and know of a quality, craft coffee shop in Chico, please message me. If you are looking for an alternative to Starbuck's in South Chico, this may not be it. Looking for a menu of their sandwiches or drinks? There is only the chalkboard in the café. Menu not on the website, or in paper copy, which would be helpful if you are buying for other people to take out, as we were. The usual range of coffees and teas, but nothing special in alternatives, preparation or taste. A real disappointment read more

I've been coming here since I don't even remember! That's how long it's been. This place will always hold a special place in my heart. I always get the blended white mocha (for some reason I just really like the taste of it) or a smoothie in the summer! Been going in quite a bit for the past couple of months because I got a couple of gift cards for Christmas! Anyway, every time I go there, I leave disappointed. My go to drink is a Vanilla latte... And every time they either taste burnt or its so cold that I should have just poured it on ice. White mocha....luke warm. Hazelnut Americano with cream...water like coffee with no cream, so I went back inside to put cream in it and all they had was powdered coffee mate, so I just threw the coffee away and left. The only good drink that I've received from there was an iced Mexican mocha one time. Needless to say, I would not recommend someone taking the time to get out of their car to go in to this place. You will be better off going through Dutch bros or Starbucks! read more
