I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Palm and her staff at Cal West Pet Hospital. I adopted a dog from SPCA about a month ago and the first exam was free at Cal West so I decided to book an appointment. I already had an established relationship with another vet in Vacaville for my other dog but wanted to explore other options. The location and parking lot is small but Dr. Palm's excellent bedside manner and the friendliness of the staff makes up for it. It is evident that Dr. Palm loves animals and really cares about the best interest of the pet - not about making a bunch of money or upselling the customer. Yes the office is simple but what matters most to me is the quality of the care that my pet is receiving. My regular veterinarian works here certain days and also at another veterinary clinic on alternate days. I tried calling here to possibly get my cat seen because of the other office being booked.. I spoke with a receptionist by the name of Cindy and not only was she unaccommodating but she was very rude. She made me feel like a huge problem just for asking a question regarding a possible appointment. This place I am sure has great veterinarians ( including mine ) - but an unfavorable and negative gatekeeper manning the front desk and the phones can absolutely ruin a business. The Vet was great, he office staff were mostly great, one person was not, she ruined my experience here. I think this person was perhaps an office manager or something, she didn't introduce herself to me . Anyways, here's what happened today.... I brought my dog in to have an ultrasound. I had previously discussed this over the phone with the vet. I was under the impression that a abdomen and chest ultrasound would cost around $500 to $600. When I dropped my dog at the vet this morning for this ultrasound I assumed that that was still accurate. When I picked her up they had done an abdomen and neck ultrasound instead which I totally understand.... in the moment you gotta do what you got to do, that's not a problem, I used to work in the hospital so I get that things change as you start looking for and discovering things etc What I don't understand is that when I asked the office staff to explain the price difference to me they sent out this person who was condescending and rude (she was referring to my wife as "confused" and also said "do you need to call her, did she not understand what the vet said," making me feel like somehow I'm the bad guy and that maybe my wife is dumb, or at least they think she is, then she was trying to put some paper in my hand showing an estimate that they had just created, an estimate that we never saw previously or signed, which means that paper had no actual meaning to it at all so I wouldn't take it from her... She was being a little rude the whole time and when I said to her, and I quote , "I don't know why you're talking to me that way it's really weird" she got defensive and then walked away without explaining anything any further about the discrepancy. While I was waiting at the front desk to pay the $750, I heard this person in the background complaining to all the other staff in the office about our interaction which made me feel really uncomfortable. So, I just paid and left. I don't really know if I should ever return here because I'm worried that this person will find a way to ruin my future experiences here if I do return with any of my 3 dogs or cat.... It's sad how one rude person can ruin my experience with your entire establishment, making me weary to return, and pushing me to warn other potential clients via this review. What do you think? Should I just chalk it up to that person having a bad day and taking it out on me? Should I go back or choose another vet? read more

10am, was traded off to another woman, who also oput me on hold again... without telling me...again... So- Tried to get an estimate of billing for a TINY surgery of less than 1/8th inch growth on a lip of a 6yr old small dog. No bid deal, looks like a skintag on the lip, on steroids. Would take under a minute to cut it off. My Vet wants $800. Put the dog asleep, NOT use a dentist's numbing shot, and then KENNEL it until it awakes up, USE stitches..??? What? 1? (maybe?) and then come back in to take "the stitch" out. They flat refused to give any comparisons of costs. They HAD TO HAVE THEIR VET SEE the DOG, to give me an estimate that they would NEVER compare. They "couldn't" and wouldn't look at our Vet's estimate and give their costs. ANY TIME ANYONE refuses to compare their costs with Someone elses's ...?they're crooked and charge too much. Just a fact of life. They "MAY" be great dog handlers etc... but obviously they CHARGE more than they want to admit. and they have a "policy" in place to NEVER EVER allow cost comparisons. I even asked what they charge for a Blood panel workup with the NAME of the Blood panel test... Chem 17 Panel, CBC... OH NO! we can't discuss prices for that either. read more

Very disappointed. The entry was cramped and dark, doors were chipping wood, dirty premises overall, spider webs and debris on the floors, and the doctor didn't even introduce herself when she came into the room - just went directly into doing a checkup. This was my first time and only time there. My animal was to have a procedure the following week and I cancelled it because of my concerns on cleanliness and worry about sanitary materials. They were the ONLY people who showed interest in our poor kitten, and they took mercy on us. Amazing.. I've been taking my dear Cat (Burbur) here for almost three years. We had him neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, you name it.. I loved this place when Dr. Bock was here. She was very caring and a kind veterinarian. Unfortunately, she recently left. We took our very sick cat here and had to have him put down. The older male vet is the worst! Very gruff, ruff and just plain mean with your pet. Our poor cat was at the end of his life and very weak - a female vet couldn't find a vein because he was so dehydrated -- this older male vet stepped in and traumatized our poor cat even further. I would hate to see how he handles animals without the owner present if he does this in front of owners. My husband was ready to tell him to stop and we would just take him home because he was so mean and cruel to our cat. I'm not sure if he's the owner but he definitely should retire at this point. read more

I recently moved to Fairfield from Southern California and I was in need of a vet. While moving, my Sheltie Dexter was being boarded at a kennel. When I picked him up to drive him up to Fairfield, I discovered he had kennel cough. I was devastated! Dexter had never been sick in his life so I was very worried. Once I arrived in Fairfield, I looked at Yelp for recommendations. All the reviews for Cal West Pet Hospital were incredible so I had to see for myself. I called to make an appointment, and even though they were booked for the day, they squeezed in a time for Dexter. I already was happy and grateful for Cal West Pet Hospital before even arriving. When I arrived I was helped right away and filled out some paperwork. I was advised to leave Dexter in my car when I arrived so that he wouldn't infect any dogs. I waited around 10 minutes with him at my car before being seen. Monica came out to greet me and carried Dexter into the office to weigh him, and then carried him into the exam room. She advised me she was doing this to prevent spreading any germs of his kennel cough. I was taken back by her kindness and compassion for my dog. Monica is so helpful and she loves what she does, it reflects in her attitude and help with your pet. Dr. Jurberg examined Dexter to confirm that he did have kennel cough. He asked me questions about where Dexter had been and questions about his health before. Dr. Jurberg explained what kennel cough was, how to treat it, how to prevent it in the future if Dexter was to be boarded again, and his plan to help Dexter. The whole time I was in the exam room I felt at ease. I had been so worried but Monica and Dr. Jurberg made me feel better and assured me Dexter would be just fine. The entire time Dexter was on the exam table Monica was so loving and caring to him. She would pet him to ease his panic and she spoke to him in a calm manner. Monica is an amazing nurse and I was so glad she was there to help me and Dexter. Dexter was prescribed antibiotics and has been on them now for about a week. He's doing great and I see his usual self is back. I cannot express my gratitude enough for Cal West Pet Hospital. The entire staff is amazing and attentive. I'm so glad I found them and will be using them as Dexter's vet up here in Fairfield from now on. read more

After a brief meeting with Dr. Bock we both came to the same agreement that our cat who was just 1 1/2 months away from turning 16 years old, that it was time for us to say goodbye and send him over to Rainbow Bridge . Different vets under the same business can be VERY different. With that said, 5 Stars for Dr. Bock. Why? Many reasons. Below is what I really want to let others know: My very sick & congested kitty had been to 4 vets (2 at UC Davis) in the last 3 days. Congestion was so bad Kitty hadnt slept in 5 days. (How do I know? I am a light sleeper that can't sleep through NONSTOP coughing & violent retching.) My 4th ER appt was with Dr. Bock. Fitting him in with no available appts for the day she cleared up 95% of his congestion and reduced him bringing up foamy muscus by 90%. For the 1st time in 5 days, 4 vets later, my poor kitty & I were able to get SLEEEEP!!! This is 100% due to Dr.Bock. It"s been 24 hours since picking him up from Dr.Bock. Kitty started to purr just now o.O so I wrote this review. read more

Yesterday morning my husky suddenly collapsed, and stopped breathing.. we immediately took action and rushed her to Cal West Pet Hospital. I have been taking my dog, Ghost, to Cal West for a while now. With all the trouble my dog stirs up (not actual trouble, she just has a few persistent issues), I am more than happy with how well the Cal West Staff has treated us. At one point Ghost had an obstruction (which thankfully had passed) and Dr. Jurberg printed off all of Ghosts x-rays and medical history incase we needed to run to the ER since they were closed the following day. I usually take Ghost to see Dr. Bock. She is amazing! She has seen us on short notice, answered all of my ridiculous questions and eased my concerns with whatever is going on with my dog. Not to mention she and the techs are amazing with Ghost. It has been hard to find a place that makes me feel comfortable and at ease taking my pup to. I am definitely glad I happened upon this gem. My Nana has two older cats - I'd say around 15. Neither was in great health, but one seemed especially ill. She was a sweet kitty - Layla. My Nana got sick and spent a few days in the hospital and I was in charge of her furry children. When I moved to Vacaville in 1999, I drove around looking for a veterinarian for my dogs. I found a vet office in Vacaville that looked clean inside and out. Regrettably, their service and manner was lack-luster. But since they were inexpensive and my dogs only went there for annual check-ups, I kept going there for 10 years. Then, one of my dogs got sick. These vets were unable to find a reason, and didn't seem too interested in running any tests. I was told about Cal West Pet Hospital and decided to take my dog there. Dr. Kelly Palm and her assistant spent almost an hour with the exam, blood tests, and x-rays. They found a liver tumor and gave me all of the options to consider. I now take all three of my dogs to Cal West. Not only do they spend more time with the dogs in an exam than I get from Kaiser, they also call and follow-up on any care they've prescribed. They also work with specialists and UC Davis if additional care is needed. If you are reading this, that means that you care about your pet and want to find the right veterinarian. I have (2) furry children. I obsess over them in an unhealthy and unnatural way (read: I take them to the vet for any and everything). In the past 6, I have taken my Chis for: *regular checkups *when they've wheezed *when I thought one had a tick (it was a scab - I'm a weirdo, I told you) *when one ran into a fence (I was sure spinal surgery was in order) and for thousands of other 'crazed dog lover' reasons. Each time I've entered the office, the front office staff has greeted all of us by name. Dr's. Bock and Jurberg patiently listened, examined and treated my fur-kids with tender care and love. As you can tell, I am nutso but they're too nice to ever tell me to my face. I have also left my Chis with them while on vacation and I've always felt safe and secure in the fact that my little guys are in good hands. I have been taking my two Abyssinian cats to Cal West for several years now. I have worked with both Dr. Bock and Dr. Palm and can't even begin to express my gratitude for their kind and compassionate care for my recently passed boy, Razor. When our treatment was not progressing for him, they fully supported both me and him and really helped me come to terms with his situation. I am heartbroken to lose my poor Razor, but am thankful that he was cared for by such thoughtful people. The front office staff were also very sweet as I was a mess in the lobby from losing him. I will continue to take my remaining girl to them. They both received tooth extraction surgery (13 teeth for one and 7 for the other). One was spayed here as well. They dealt with my guys severe aggression as well as I could have hoped for. We tried many paths to treat him. All suggestions were reasonable and presented in a cost/benefit manner. Never once did I feel anything was suggested that wasn't helpful or was financially driven. These people really love animals and it is obvious in their care and practice. Thank you, Cal West. Thank you so much Cal West! My little Frenchie was very sick when I came home from work. I had no idea what could be wrong with her all I knew was she was in pain. I took her to Cal West where she was seen by Dr. Palm. I can't say enough good things about Dr. Palm! She was absolutely amazing to my little girl! She was able determine that French Fry had injured her back. With medication and a strict activity restriction my little girl should be feeling better in a few weeks. I don't understand why this place has such great reviews. They have terrible customer service. I called at 8:30AM on Monday morning, to schedule an appointment for my dog, and I was told, by the receptionist that the computers were down and an appointment couldn't be scheduled. The receptionist then asked me for my name and phone number because she said that she would call me back. I waited till 11:30AM and no one called me back. I then called again and the receptionist that answered was very rude and hostile. If this is the way they treat people, I wonder how they treat the animals. read more

So much happier with this vet - my cat was sick and they were great dealing with him. I respect that the vet was super cautious and explanatory and we did a few more tests than I would have thought but we caught a few issues we might not have. I received a follow up call the next day on some blood work that the doctor had thought about and wanted to double check and I appreciate that she put thought into my cat even after we left. Thankfully he is much better now. They were also respectful and nice there so I will bring all of my animals to them from now on. Other vets we have tried here have made me uncomfortable and feel like we are not really important. Cal West was not like that at all. read more
