Today our family made the extremely difficult decision to put to rest our 12 year old Rhodesian Ridgeback, Ruby. She was an amazing companion and I struggle to hold back the tears while writing this review. The staff at VEG was simply amazing, and Dr. Shannon took the utmost care to explain everything and give us the necessary time to make the decision on what would be best for Ruby. There will never be another dog like her, and we want to express our gratitude to the staff for showing the grace and consideration through Ruby's final moments. Just left VEG and all I can say is the staff is amazing, the doctors are horrible! Brought my 15 year old boston in for sudden loss of appetite and vomiting - the doctor never did an exam and was worried about a blockage. No exam at all, yet I am charged for one, and also a miscellaneous $100 fee. To make it even better, the vet techs asked the doctor if she wanted to examine another patient, laughing, as if this doctor has a history of failure to examine. Pretty much paid $1200 for labs, Cerenia, and fluids, all while sitting in a waiting area! I have 3 dogs, a 15 year old with IMHA, another 15yo seen today, and a 9yo that is currently being seen at Sage ophthalmology -- I know what medical care is needed and I know good medical care, VEG care is pure garbage. My poor baby had a prolonged bout of diarrhea. That may not sound serious, but I became deeply afraid after over a week that she was becoming dehydrated or that it was something life-threatening. We had never been to VEG before but our vet recommended it so my husband brought our girl there. He said that everyone was so compassionate, all of the staff truly show up in a way that makes you feel like they care about your pup. And they took our concerns seriously rather than dismissing it. I am so glad they did because the testing revealed potential unknown dangers lurking (growths on her organs). Ultimately, we did eventually identify the presumed source of her diarrhea as being related to the pesticide that is being sprayed in our neighborhood on the sidewalks and Roundup in the grass. The treatment was very effective, ranging from dietary support to probiotics to stool bulking methodologies and subcutaneous fluids to address the dehydration. The follow-ups from the vet were very welcome and we really felt like they wanted to make sure our pup was safe long after we had gone home. I actually called them with an update a few weeks later, and the front desk staff connected me to the vet so that she could take the information down. I really appreciated that level of note-taking and individual attention. We now have a long-term plan for the unexpected nodules and her diarrhea resolved. Other things that are notable and very appreciated included the way that they provided an invoice with line items so we could pick and choose which interventions / diagnostics we were comfortable doing. And finally, being able to stay with your dog, aka the open concept, is a beautiful thing. My only regret is that I hadn't taken my other dog, my late soul dog, here when she was ill. I have no doubt that my other dog would either still be with us today or would have passed more peacefully with us beside her if only we had come here instead of the other ER vet we had gone to. It means the world that this type of emergency vet exists. read more

We had had 2 experiences with VEG, both were great. I had heard this was a great choice, should we have an emergency within our pets. The first was just a phone call. One night one pup was acting strange. She was shaking and super clingy. I called and they had be speak to one of the veterinarians. She asked questions and told me she thought our pup was ok and we could remain at home, coming in if things changed or got worse. In the end, she eventually relaxed and was ok. Our second was with our other pup, who has had gland issues. I was out of town and my husband saw she was starting to have some swelling and knew to take her to VEG. He was very impressed by the whole experience. They let you in, as doors are locked. The facility is mostly a large open space with separate places for each animal to be cared for. They quickly had her examined, determined what was needed and completed the needed procedure. My husband was able to be with her most of the time and was encouraged to talk to her and pet her, as they know it helps keep our babies calm. He was even offered to observe the procedure, though he chose to not look and just pet her. They do have private areas for use as needed. After they gave her an anti-nausea shot, which would sting, she went crazy. I have never seen her so upset. Before we left, they brought her some food. She ate it all. We were triaged almost immediately when we walked in, and while there was a bit of a wait to see the doctor, it felt pretty timely considering it's an emergency service and they're handling urgent cases. it ended up being way more serious than i initially thought as my dog needed to be hospitalized overnight. although i was extremely anxious about the situation, the way they handled everything with such care and compassion made all the difference. what really stood out was how much they prioritized my comfort too. they allowed me to stay with my dog the whole time, offered me drinks, snacks, and blankets. the open layout meant i could be right there with him during treatments and procedures, which gave me so much peace of mind during a really stressful situation. communication was clear and thorough - they walked me through the treatment plan and made sure i understood everything that was happening. the facility itself is super clean, organized, and spacious with a centralized location that's easy to get to. yes, the cost was a lot, but that's expected with emergency vet care and honestly worth every penny for the level of care we received. the whole team treated him with so much love and i genuinely can't thank them enough. if you ever find yourself in an emergency situation with your pet, i can't recommend VEG enough. read more

VEG has been there for my entire fur family any time that emergency care has been needed. From two years ago with a bowel obstruction to yesterday's life threatening pneumonia, they have only ever provided the utmost best veterinary care for our dogs and for our chinchilla. They have an open floor plan where you can spend time with your recovering animals and with them being open 24hrs a day, during any point of hospitalization they are happy to have you there with them. On top of that they also have rooms where you and your animals can have a bit more privacy if needed. Everyone who works there is always so kind and level headed, even during the most serious of cases, and they are always quick to respond even when there are 10 other patients being helped at the same time. The staff at VEG has saved the lives of multiple animals in our care and they always go above and beyond to give your animals the best outcome possible. While I hope that nobody would ever need to go to the emergency vet, sometimes it is unavoidable and during those times I wouldn't recommend any other emergency vet than this one. Updating since we had another hospitalization recently for pneumonia and VEG did an amazing job with my sweet girl. She was unusually fearful because she was feeling horrible, so she snapped at the vet and nurses during her first exam, but they were so understanding and patient. I felt terrible, but they were so nice about it. She had to stay overnight, but we visited her a few times and each time we had staff come over to check if we needed anything, had any questions, etc. They also did their best to make her comfortable (even setting up a bed and headrest made of towels for her to lean on) while she was with them. We loved the way the nurses interacted with her. We saw them petting her, calling her nicknames, etc. and she was even wagging her tail when they opened the door to the oxygen chamber. She looked so excited to see them! The front desk staff was awesome as well. They were so friendly and incredibly helpful with any administrative issues we had, like splitting up payment on different cards. I will never take my pets to another emergency vet if I can avoid it. I've never been to an emergency vet before but I will definitely go here in the future if needed and will recommend VEG to others. Any kind of doctor visit makes me stressed and my 2-year-old German Shepherd rescue feels the same about vets. This past Friday afternoon, Marley injured her back leg in our yard and was unable to walk. I kept her inside and hoped she would be better by morning. Saturday morning she still couldn't walk. I called VEG around 7 a.m. and spoke to Cameron, who was very helpful and caring. He said no appointment was necessary. He sent me a text that allowed me to check in beforehand. I had to call back to make sure Marley's anxiety meds wouldn't interfere with the exam. I spoke to Tiana then and she was just as helpful and caring. When I came in around 8 a.m. Marley and I were immediately taken to a room to sit comfortably. Everyone greeted us warmly. When DVM Katy Wilkinson approached Marley she was totally respectful and patient with Marley's fear. It ended up that Marley needed to be sedated for the x-rays and I didn't feel that anything was forced on me. I love Marley and want the best for her but I live paycheck to paycheck and would be using a credit card for the expenses. Sometimes I come out of a vet appointment and think "All that money for very little and no real attention." But at VEG I felt I got everything I paid for with a caring attitude from everyone there. I spent most of the time with Nurse Jori Hill and she was incredible. Very knowledgeable, professional, compassionate and patient. Marley was resistant to sedation but Jori never rushed anything and I'm so grateful for her treatment of us. I was allowed to be with Marley the entire time, even being allowed to observe thru the windowed door for the more intense x-rays. Dr. Wilkinson checked all x-rays as Jori was taking them and made sure even her toes were filmed. Turned out Marley had a bad sprain but no broken bones. While Marley was sedated, Jori even carefully trimmed Marley's nails (and dewclaws), something that is usually a real struggle. Thank you, Jori, so much. On Christmas Eve, my dog suddenly started having difficulty walking and was holding her head to the side and acting very anxious. I thought she had had a stroke or ruptured a disc when she jumped out of the car. She is around 14 yrs old and also has Cushing's disease. She has 2 tumors on her adrenal glands and they could be cancerous. Upon entering this facility, someone immediately greeted us and directed us to some seating. I had called ahead to say we were coming but did not have time to fill out the intake form they had sent. They got basic information and then they called a vet over who did a quick exam on Molly. She noticed she had nystagmus which is rapid eye movements. We hadn't even noticed that. The vet mentioned idiopathic vestibular disease, and then I remembered Molly had had that before, but it was a very minor case compared to this episode. The vet said she'd back and the clerk brought a soft pad and a blanket for Molly to lie on. I thought that was really nice, I've been to plenty of emergency vets before and that was a first. Also, I was shocked they did not immediately ask for a credit card and as most emergency vets want that upfront. In a few minutes the vet came back and did a few more neuro checks. Since Molly has Cushing's and adrenal tumors, I asked her if she could have a brain tumor that was causing this. She said it was a possibility but they didn't have an MRI machine or a CT scanner. She told me about a new emergency vet that only took neurology cases, Neuro Vet. She said I could call them and see if they could see her. I called them and was able to get an appt. right away. The vet said there would be no charge. That was another shock. We really appreciated the fact that they examined Molly right away, and directed us to another specialist who was able to confirm it was Idiopathic Vestibular Disease. Very pleased with the professionalism at Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) in Pleasant Hill. After the frustration with calling several vets and vet hospitals trying to find one that would take a guinea pig for euthanasia (I guess guinea pigs are "exotic" pets and many vets won't take them), I was referred to VEG and it was a HUGE relief. Didn't want to go another day seeing her suffer as she could no longer get to her water and didn't want to eat anymore. VEG took her immediately on same day drop in and took care of her without hesitation. Private euthanasia room was very comforting. I highly recommend this vet for a small pet like mine. The cost was very reasonable and I would not hesitate doing it again because why allow more suffering when the time comes when it's hard for you as well as your beloved pet? This was my first experience at VEG, but I would bring any future pet back for other services based on the care and service I received. I called after I woke up to my cat having an asthma attack. I was able to quickly check in online and when I arrived they opened the doors for me, got me and my kitty into a room right away, and even offered me water. The cost for chest X-ray, vitals, and bloodwork were high, but not beyond what I expected. They added a sedative to my invoice but ended up not needing to use it, which reduced my cost. I got to be in the room while they did her vitals and bloodwork, and I appreciated the level of care and all of the staff who handled my kitty very gently through a traumatizing experience for her. They also offered payment plan options. I ultimately declined medication due to possible risks, but I am glad to have peace of mind and a place I feel comfortable taking my cats to if another emergency happens. read more

My Moxie girl is a geriatric dog that has a history of sometimes inhaling her water when drinking. Normally it resolves by the next morning, but this time was different. I was referred by an obnoxious vet with a new business model to go to emergency. I chose VEG Pleasant Hill based on the reviews. The good: The team were friendly and kind and quick. But same as Modern Animal, expensive. I paid for the X-ray and appointment: $225 for the appointment $650 for the X-ray I expected to pay emergency vet prices. It was the cost of the medication that has me fuming! I KNOW my dog and Clavamox is what her old vet always gave her because he listened to me explain her history. Past Clavamox price: $30 Clavamox from Chewy: $36 Generic Clavamox from Chewy: $20 *Amount charged at VEG PH: $103.39!* That is abysmal and extortive pricing for meds when actual pricing is easy to find online. I'm so done with these new and modern veterinary practices and the up charges. It was good until the Rx charge. read more

Mahalo to Dr. Tarver and Nurse Tasha for caring for our little dude. He wasn't acting like his normal self for a couple days and barely would walk, so taking him to VEG was the best decision for him. The way they handle our little fur babies is exceptional and you can see in the way they interact with each patient that they truly do care about them. It was around 7pm-ish on a Tuesday night and it was a slower night for this location so that was nice and I believe made it a little easier on our little guy. Just as we get those white coat tremors going to the doctors, I'm sure our furry friends feel the same when we walk into these doors. It's great that it's always clean with open flooring so we can see what's going on at all times. There are rooms if and when needed, but it's nice to see them handle all patients and their parents with care. If you ever have an emergency, I highly recommend this location. In reading previous reviews, I understand some have had less than great experiences, and some, like me, wonderful experiences. My dog woke me up (of course at 1 am!) wanting attention. Humm, odd, but I petted him and he sort of mewed and was trembling. So, off we go to the emergency vet. We were taken in immediately, treated with compassion, respect and with professional attention. Dr. Wong was exemplary. The tech did an initial exam for simple vitals, then Dr. Wong did a more extensive exam. Based on that she discussed possible diagnoses, outcomes and the approximate cost of each. We decided to start with the simplest--and least expensive--treatment. If that didn't work, more diagnostics would be needed. Every step of the way I was included in the decision making. I like that and the fact that, unlike other emergency vets I have been to, I was with my dog the whole time. I would return if further vet services are needed--especially if Dr. Wong is available. read more

My dog had an emergency this past weekend and I've only ever been to one other emergency vet which is where we originally drove to as it's close to home but when we got there it was pretty busy and the staff wasn't welcoming, very much take a number and we'll get you to sort of vibe. So I went on yelp and found this place - I called and requested the cost of the exam fee and it was higher than the place I was currently waiting at but I had a feeling it might be worth it and it definitely was! The place itself was clean (staff was mopping while we there), very welcoming and although we did have to wait between each step (as expected) we were seen right away for an initial exam and were checked in on for status updates as to when the next step/test/meds was going to be done. I really liked the open concept layout, and that I was able to stay with my dog which was important to me. The doctors and vet techs were all very kind which always makes a world of difference. Everyone was super friendly, the service was fairly quick (in and out within a little over an hour, which isn't bad for an emergency vet, plus they were in the middle of a shift change in the evening) and everyone there made me and Ollie feel welcome, safe and calm. The staff brought him a blanket to lie on and one of the staff members came over to rub his belly and give him some attention while we waited. They saw him right away to do immediate vitals and give him some ointment, and the DR later examined him and discovered it was hair that was pulling the skin back. So he trimmed the hair and then offered to shave his belly (in the future, we will have to make sure this becomes part of his normal grooming technique). Because they said it was an easy fix, they didn't charge me and even gave me ointment to take home should we need it. I can't tell you how appreciative I am for all the staff there. When leaving, Beck gave him extra puppy treats for doing such a good job. They easily could have charged me a "visit" fee or more, and instead I walked out with a happy and healthy little puppy and at ease knowing that he was better without breaking the bank. THANK YOU to the entire staff there. Ollie and I are sending treats to the office this morning as a thank you gift, and we would definitely recommend VEG to anyone seeking urgent vet care for their animal. Had a scare when a parrot we were birdsitting was thought to have eaten tiny MAGNETS. From a set of 500+. 500!!!! Have you ever sat down and just counted 500 slippery, rainbow magnets the size of a grain of rice while your pet peeped happily without a care in the background?? And then freaked out because 5 were missing at the end??? AUUUUGH (facepalm). $500 later, I was proven to be overreacting (dunno where those missing 5 are, but they are not in his tummy) :'D Better safe than sorry. Anyways, this was my first ever emergency vet experience and it couldn't have gone better. After arriving, we checked in and were seen immediately on a weekday night. Given typical hospital environments, I was expecting an emotionally sterile atmosphere-- yet everyone we met was so compassionate and friendly. Dr. Nikki (forgot last name) was wonderful. She reassured us every step of the process, and gave us extra advice on the parrot's overall health as well. SO grateful this center has avian care capabilities. The X-Ray was only 5 mins. We left with the biggest relief knowing that birdy was safe. From what I've been told, this is relatively abnormal for emergency vet trips, from price, to wait time, to bedside manner. I feel extremely fortunate to have such a great clinic within an hour's drive from us. read more
