My friend and I decided to try some African cuisine and Calabash came highly recommended. Upon entering the restaurant is very spacious and beautifully decorated. We were immediately greeted and we chose to sit at the bar. Our server, who is also the chef, told us she would bring some samples of popular dishes so we can taste them before ordering. She also gave us some drink samples of popular drinks. For the food samples she gave us some vegetarian Egusi, Oxtail stew, peanut butter stew and okra stew. The Egusi has a very Smokey flavor and a good amount of heat. She told us we can get it with less heat if we choose to. The peanut butter stew was savory and delicious. It was both of our favorites. I was apprehensive as I'm not a huge peanut butter fan but you really did not get a peanut butter flavor at all. It was just rich and delicious. The okra was our least favorite. The flavor was decent but it was a texture thing for me. Finally the oxtail. It was very rich and tasty. We decided to order the peanut butter stew with chicken and the egusi with beef, but a little less hot. She said what we tried was about a 7 heat level so we got a 5. We also ordered a side of jollof rice that she highly recommended we try also. As an appetizer we ordered the fataya empanadas and since we could mix and match we chose beef and chicken. For the drink samples she gave us the ginger pineapple juice, baobob juice, hibiscus juice and the tea. The ginger one was very heavy in the ginger taste, a little too much for me. The tea was delicious and sweet. The hibiscus was a little tho let, almost syrupy but had a nice flavor. Finally the baobob, which is a super fruit, and that was citrusy and refreshing so we both ordered that for our beverage. The empanadas came out first. They were pillowy and flaky, stuffed with meat. Both of us preferred the chicken over the beef one. They're served with a tomato like chili sauce that was delicious too. The Egusi and PB stew arrived shortly after. Both served with a ball of fufu. She told us if we liked she could also bring some white rice on the side as that was the other way to eat it, but we stuck with the fufu. The fufu is a dough like ball that you pull apart and scoop up the stew. It has almost a mashed potato feel and taste once it's in your mouth. The chicken in the PB stew was amazing. Definitely could e used more but that's just because we liked it so much. I can only imagine how good the chicken on the jollof rice is as the rice was delicious also. Nicely seasoned and fluffy. That will definitely be on the list for next time. The egusi with beef was good but I think the addition of the beef made it even a little smokier flavored than the vegetarian version. I would definitely stick with the veggie one. To finish off we tried the puff puffs. Deep fried dough similar to a zeppoli, just more dense. It is served with some chocolate sauce and whipped cream, sprinkled with yellow raisins. We were so full we only managed to finish a couple of them. Overall this is an amazing restaurant. If you're looking for a new cuisine to try, this is the place. The service was amazing and they also have live a live saxophone player on Friday- Sunday. read more

I got to try a sampling of their delicious Senegambian food at Vegas Unstripped earlier this year (the only vendor I went back to for seconds that night cuz it was THAT delicious) and knew I had to visit their restaurant! I placed a to-go order as I was in the area and the whole experience was splendid! The employees were great and the food was soooo flavorful!!!! You can order online through their site or the good ol' phone method! I got the following to-go: 1. Jollof Rice with Chicken - You will be hooked!!! The chicken was so juicy and tender, and the rice.....ADDICTING!!! Makes me jolly just thinking about it! 2. Red Stew - such a flavorful beef stew this was!!! We thoroughly enjoyed it and it had some good heat to it too!! 3. Baobab Juice - A neat flavor; kind of sour, kind of sweet and creamy ivory in color! Definitely refreshing and the employee said it goes well mixed with hibiscus tea! Why no pictures? The aromatic smell of everything was absolute torture while driving home, so my phone didn't get to eat first this time. We came in on a Friday night and were instantly greeted by a live saxophone player--it completely set the perfect vibe for the evening! Our waitress, Nyla, was incredible. She was so sweet, personable, and friendly, and every single one of her food and drink recommendations was absolutely on point. The food itself was delicious; the meat in our dishes was incredibly tender, flavorful, and literally falling off the bone. To top off the great meal, the service was wonderfully attentive. We had a great experience on Saturday evening. Live music was playing and the atmosphere was fantastic. Kombeh was our waiter and was so friendly and attentive. We started with the black eyed pea fritters which were so soft inside and crispy on the outside. The black eyed pea dipping sauce was spicy but flavorful. The peanut butter stew was the star. Also the chef is James Beard Nominated for "Best Chef SW." Inside is a modern sleek decor. You can sit at the bar or a comfortable table. For my beverage I tried a Kenyan Black Tea. It's a very rich Black Tea unlike any tea I've had before and was interesting. For an appetizer we tried the Fataya Pies (vegetarian empanadas). They had amazing flavors to them and came with a tasty kinda spicy red sauce. They were delicious! The pastry on them was also very thin but also held everything nicely together. They didn't seem heavy at all. We shared the fried Red Snapper and the famous Jollof Rice with Chicken. Both platters had amazing flavors to them. I thought I knew Jollof Rice because I have had it at other African Restaurants but the Jollof Rice Here really is truly amazing with layers of flavors unlike the others I've tried. Both dishes tasted great but the chicken had more going on with it than the fish. The only reason I didn't give FIVE stars is because both the fish and the chicken were both slightly dry and overcooked. I didn't feel the need to complain. While I was visiting a friend in Las Vegas l, I suggested this place as a we both love food and trying new places together. The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated and staff was friendly. I was torn between two items. The Egusi and the Peanut Butter Stew. The host/ waitress suggested the Peanut Butter Stew so I ordered it with chicken. You can choose your choice of protein (chicken, beef, fish, lamb, or goat for a surcharge) or leave it vegetarian. My friend ordered the Red Stew with lamb. You get a choice of one side to eat with your meal: Fufu, white rice, fonio, or Jollof rice (+$4). We both opted for fufu and I ordered an additional side of white rice. I wanted to try the Jollof Rice, and kind of kicking myself for not. Just means I have to come back on my next trip to Vegas. The fufu was unlike anything I have had before. It's like a malleable dough that tastes like mashed potatoes. You break off a piece and use it to scoop/ eat your soup or stew. The peanut butter stew was delicious, but I did not get a peanut butter taste. The consistency and complex flavors in the stew remind me of a curry, which is probably why I enjoyed it. This was our first time here and they were very patient and accommodating to us. They explained all their popular items, went over their favorites, and even gave us samples of their popular stew items. We got the following: A seafood empanada A beef empanada Red stew with lamb and jollof rice Okra stew with chicken and fufu Hibiscus juice Baobab juice Everything came out to around $82, which I feel is very fair since we brought home a good amount of leftovers too. This was my first experience with Senegambian food and now I can't wait to try more. I was able to taste the peanut butter stew, red stew, and egusi. I loved the red stew with vegetables. The vegetable variety was great, my stew was filled with eggplant, carrots, cassava, cabbage, and potato. The fufu was perfect with the tomatoey goodness. My husband enjoyed the peanut butter stew that was nutty and aromatic. He liked the beef in it too. Everything was seasoned so well. Both dishes were very filling and we left satisfied. They all had distinct flavors and textures, and we actually chose a third one that we loved that we hadn't been considering. We ended up getting the red stew "chu" and casava leaf stew "palasas" with fufu and jollof rice. My favorite was the onion and garlic heavy chu, while my husband preferred the smoked fish profile of the palasas. Because the stews were so flavorful, we felt they paired better with the mild fufu versus competing with the also flavorful jollof rice. Both had a lot of meat (we chose beef and lamb) and we were happy to have leftovers. Also tried their fun cocktails, especially the boabab based one! Always love trying the different African cuisine in Vegas and Calabash did not disappoint when it comes to service and flavors. Hawa was the only waitress and she was moving! Always checking on everyone to make sure they are okay. It wasn't too busy when I came in but as time went on it did become a bit more busy and she was still on top of everything. There was a bit of issue with my food, I asked for jollof rice and got fufu for the side (which Hawa took care of) and asked for grilled fish but got fried, which I just ate cause no sense sending that back. Though I prefer grilled or baked fish, the crunch and flavor of the fried fish was still good, especially with the sauces it came with. This now makes the fifth African food spot I've tried, and while I'm still learning, I've grown most familiar with Nigerian cuisine -- those bold, layered flavors are my favorite. The pros: The atmosphere was warm and welcoming -- clean space, lively staff, and great music. We also really enjoyed our meals overall. I ordered the Cassava Leaf Stew with fish, Peanut Butter Stew with chicken, and vegetarian Egusi. Surprisingly, the Cassava Stew was my favorite -- the bitterness of the greens really stood out in a good way and gave the dish a bold, distinct flavor. The Peanut Butter Stew was my least favorite, though still enjoyable. I think my expectations were different -- I was hoping for a touch of sweetness or a smoky flavor from the chicken, but the profile was more subtle than I anticipated. My husband had the Black Eyed Pea vegan dish with a side of jollof rice. He liked it, but the spice level was a bit much for him. The jollof had great flavor, though the texture was off -- ours seemed a little stale and dry, with some hard rice kernels. My daughter loved the fufu -- no surprise there! Cons: The biggest downside was the wait. Our food took about an hour and a half to arrive, which felt especially long with a child in tow. The bathrooms also could've been cleaner. After our visit, I learned that the chef draws from Senegalese and Gambian traditions -- and this was actually my first time trying either. The staff here are very friendly and kind. We first tried the empanadas. One seafood and one beef. They were both delicious but my favorite was definitely the seafood. For the main course we split the mixed grill platter. All of it was delicious....I even had left overs for the next day.
