Tar & Roses is a mixed bag with one genuine high point. The menu is where it lost me. It swings from Vietnamese small plates to a straightforward steak, and the range never settles into a point of view -- it reads less like a confident eclectic kitchen than a grab bag. The fried red snapper was the standout: crisp, well-cooked, good enough to stand on its own. It came with a fish sauce for dipping that it didn't need -- a wedge of lemon on the side would have suited it far better. The Vietnamese crab cake was a real miss; I couldn't get past it. The dumplings were fine but forgettable. Service ran to extremes. Our server was warm and eager, almost too eager -- he pushed a bottle of wine we weren't sold on, and we ordered it anyway. Then, after all that attentiveness, he disappeared toward the end of the meal and never came back. The wine list was fine, nothing memorable. I read the many excellent reviews and decided to try TR out(right across from Santa Monica library). It's a smaller place but all the outdoor seats were open and I liked the cozy corner seat with a great heat lamp(sometimes at other restaurants they don't work or too far from the table). So I really enjoyed the ambience, there are some sketchy people walking by but that's to be expected and nobody tried to interfere with my dinner. Service by waiter David was excellent. He was very knowledgeable and attentive. I really enjoyed the "Codebreaker"craft beer from Long Beach. I decided on the popular oxtail dumplings which were great but could have been a few more of them . We came here for dinner with a group. Dim date night ambiance inside. We had to wait about 15-20 or so minutes until our table was ready which was mildly annoying since we had made a reservation. Our waiter was great and timed out all our dishes nicely. We ordered quite a lot! -The oxtail dumplings are a must get. Such a delicious bite. The service at Tar & Roses is beyond amazing. They are so incredibly attentive and pleasant. And the food is pretty spectacular too. The waiter was so accomodating --we were a large group of 8 and he laid out the options of either ordering family style or personal mains (but sharing the rest) -- we opted fully for family style which was nice because we got to try most of the dishes! All of the veggie dishes were delish. The only shocking moment was when they brought out the snapper -- the full fish, head, eyes, teeth and all -- it was very delicious however and it came with this delicious chimichurri. The cheesy mashed potatoes were a standout for me -- very very cheezy!! They do not have cocktails but have an extensive wine menu -- we got three bottles, two rose's (the Santa Barbara wine was soo good) and one skin contact (orange) -- they were all very good!! Dessert was limited to three items so we got them all, sticky toffee pudding, strawberry galette and a dark chocolate mousse with ice cream. The sticky toffee pudding, which would have been my last choice was actually the best out of all of them!! Soooo good I could have eaten a whole vat of it!! LOL. On are recent trip to LA, I met my friend C at Tar & Roses. It was a short Uber ride from the Fairmont Miramar where I was staying for a work conference to the restaurant. On a nice day, it's probably a 20 minute walk. We sat at the bar which by the way only serves wine and beer. No cocktails. There are lots of interesting items on the menu. On the recommendation of our server, we ordered a few different appetizers and side dishes and one main to split. Appetizers: Oxtail Dumplings x 2 (because they were so delish!) Spaghetti Carbonara Yellowtail Crudo Sides: Cheesy Whipped Potatoes Grilled Corn Main: Hanger Steak Desserts: Sticky Toffee Pudding Chocolate "Tar" Bar My favorite of the appetizers were the oxtail dumplings. They were so good that halfway thru the appetizers, C asked our waiter for a second order of the dumplings. The spaghetti carbonara is really rich with a soft egg and parmesan. Ours had a little kick to it as there was quite a bit of black pepper. Both C and I were big fans of the side dishes. Total comfort food. The cheesy in the whipped potatoes is gruyere. The grilled corn is an Asian take on Mexican corn/elote. At Tar & Roses it's made with coconut crème, fish sauce, cheese, cilantro and peanuts. For the main course, we split the hanger steak which was served at a perfect medium rare. Delicious! We managed to leave room for dessert and decided to try both the Sticky Toffee Pudding and the Chocolate "Tar" Bar. The "Tar" bar is a dark chocolate ganache bar served with hazelnuts and salted caramel ice cream. After both desserts we were officially stuffed. Delicious, rebellious yet polished, and relaxing. I've been to T & R twice within the past 12 months and both times found it refreshing and even surprising. I hadn't thought of this as a Wine Bar, though they definitely have a solid variety here. There are plenty of dishes to choose from, and in my experience, it's best to go with a few other people so there's more to sample. Party of 3 worked wonderfully with just enough for everyone to explore. Party of 4 was a bit complicated and harder to sufficiently share each particular dish (especially the small plates). Both times enjoyed the Chicken Liver Mousse and the Oxtail Dumplings. Wildly different and fun. If I had to choose one, I'd go for the Dumplings because they are such a complete and savory bite to behold. The Mousse is good -- I think I liked more the first time. The spaghetti carbonara is a bounty of flavors - and super creamy, like you'd expect. A great dish to pass around especially because it's so rich. The wood-roasted bone marrow is rich in fatty goodness and worth a try. The cheesy mashed potatoes are impossible not to like, though the veggie star really is the brussel sprouts. Crisp pancetta, chestnuts, and mustard vinaigrette gently scorched to bring out the flavors. That said, the service was incredibly frustrating. I understand it was Valentine's Day, and as someone who also works in the service industry, I tried to be patient and empathetic all night. I know holidays are chaotic. But our server was inattentive, dismissive, and overall made the experience way more annoying than it needed to be. I won't say where we were sitting because I don't want this server to get in trouble. Could've been a bad night for him. But you gotta lock in. At one point, he verballed the dessert options so quickly and with such an irritated tone that we just decided to cancel dessert altogether because he genuinely sounded fed up with us being there. Second time at Tar & Roses for my birthday dinner and I was excited to dive deeper into the menu after only trying the pre order Singaporean chili crab and a few lighter apps on my first visit. We started with the oxtail dumplings since they seem to be one of the most hyped dishes here, but honestly... they were just mid for me. Not bad, just didn't really live up to the hype. The whole fried snapper was easily the star of the night though. Perfectly crispy outside, flaky inside, and the dipping sauce absolutely makes the dish. The shellfish pot was also excellent -- rich, flavorful, and great for sharing, but I do wish they gave a little more grilled toast with it because you'll want every last drop of the broth. The ribeye was solid and cooked perfectly, but nothing particularly memorable compared to other steak spots around LA. For dessert, definitely get the strawberry galette. This is my favorite restaurant. I would give this place 10 stars if I could. It's the place my wife and I go to for our anniversaries and for good reason. It's really that good. The following is a review from our visit on a recent Saturday night, but references previous visits. The service here is top notch. The servers are attentive and the bus boys come by and replace plates and cutlery between courses. The place has a nice romantic vibe to it. Great place for a date. The food is unbelievably good. I would strongly recommend the oxtail dumplings, balsamic glazed ribs (so tender and delicious), octopus skewers (didn't think octopus could taste so good), and the yellowtail crudo (love the citrus sauce). The dry aged ribeye for two is perfectly cooked to a medium rare just the way we like it with a nice crust on top. Even the accompanying arugula salad is tasty. The desserts here never change which is great. We always get the chocolate tar bar and strawberry crostrata. Love them. The ONLY thing we were hoping for but didn't get was the honeycomb ice cream with the crostrata. We were served vanilla ice cream instead, which was good, but not great like the honeycomb ice cream. Final thoughts. My wife wants the restaurant to bring back the charcuterie plate from the pre-pandemic era. A friend and I come here just for their what we feel is their 5 STAR Dish: Whole Fried Snapper w/ Cold Soba Noodles w/ Dipping Sauce. My friend got a ticket as she forgot to run out and put more money in it. There is also pay for parking at the Santa Monica Public Library which is less than a block away. It only cost me $2.00 for about 2 hours. The restaurant is wheelchair accessible. Bathroom is on the same floor. My only complaint which is why I took one star off is that we were seated right by the entrance and the sun was shining bright in my eyes for awhile. Tar & Roses is in our regular but infrequent rotation. Every visit we revel in every dish. The servers are usually friendly, chatty people who give genuine feedback on their preferred items on the menu, it never feels like they are selling you items... hey, we are already seated with menu in hand, so when we ask which has more luscious mouth-feel and rich sauce dish A or B, I value their honest answers. While occasionally we switch things up, the oxtail dumplings are a must have and occasionally instead of dessert we have ordered a 2nd helping of them. My BF has asked if I can recreate this at home; I think this is best left to the professionals! At the servers recommendation we switched things up and had the creamy, but not milky, delicious corn gnocchi, with slivers of cucumbers. He steered us to the asparagus which tasted freshly picked. The duck was moist and not greasy served in parsnip puree and I could have had another full cup of that sauce, because it's just that good. Those 4 dishes and a bottle of priorat was more than enough food for 2, leaving no room for desert. Tar & Roses stands the test of time for a reason. It's just that delicious. read more

We went for my birthday dinner and got a wide variety of dishes. We pretty much loved everything. The peach and burrata salad is always light and summery. The balsamic-glazed ribs were very interesting. They were served off the bone (which I didn't figure out until after I started eating with my fingers--which is kind of unncessary if they are already off the bone!). They were also extremely (maybe even too much--I was used to ribs being THAT cooked--but they were moist) soft and tender (probably had been sous-vided) before finishing with the syrupy balsamic glaze. Very interesting! The charred baby broccoli was really good with its pesto-y accompaniments. The crab cake was also good (and mostly entirely crab) with a sweet (and it was definitely sweet) Singaporean chili sauce. The Southeast Asian flavored corn was also a big hit with flavors you don't normally get with corn. The black cod was really moist and succulent with a delicious lemongrass risotto. Lastly, we got the miso-glazed cabbage which was the only thing that didn't totally hit the mark for me. It was VERY charred (probably a dash too much). But it was very tender. My main complaint is that there was something in there that tasted like soap to me. At first I though the plate might have accidentally had, like, soap left on it. But it was pretty omnipresent throughout so I think it was just some ingredient in there that was throwing me off and tasted like soap. So that dish wasn't my favorite. But the service was great. And I asked for the dishes to be timed a certain way (don't overload the table) and they did that. And we sat in the back patio which is technically outdoors but has a very neat feel. If I could give 4.5 stars I would! The service was amazing from beginning to end. We started off with the balsamic glazed ribs (recommended by our server) & the oxtail dumplings. The ribs were very tender and had a sweet and savory flavor like sticky balsamic. I liked that they took the bone off the ribs but the meat seemed too fatty to me. They tasted very similar to Din Tai Fung's ribs but these were a cut below. Although they were tasty but I wish the flavor was a little more enhanced and the meat was a little less fatty. We also got the broccolini as a vegetable which was crunchy and a refreshing dish for the table. The lemon ricotta gnocchi were decent. The flavors didn't really dance on your tongue that way you'd want it to. It tasted a bit muted. I think they could've punched up the lemon flavor for sure! The gnocchi was tasty and cooked right. The oxtail dumplings were my FAVORITE appetizer. Now these are a flavor bomb of joy. The meat inside was packed with flavor and the added touch of spice on top rounded it out well. I can't even describe it because it was so good haha. I'd come back for these! The entree we got was the black cod. Whenever I see black cod on a menu, I have to order it. It was delicate and flaky plus I loved the garlic chips on top of it. It came with a lemon grass risotto which I was a bit apprehensive about because I don't LOVE lemongrass but thankfully it wasn't too overpowering and paired extremely well with the fish. We ended with the strawberry crostata which I'm so mad I didn't take a picture but I was so excited that I dove right in. This dessert was top tier! The staff kindly explained that none were open at the moment, but if one became available, they'd be happy to move us. True to their word, they moved us not once, but twice, first from the patio to an indoor table, and then again when a better spot opened up away from the restrooms. Each transition was handled with genuine courtesy and without the slightest hint of attitude, which is rare at higher‑end restaurants. I've dined at many upscale places where the ambiance outshines the cuisine, but here the dishes truly delivered. Seating available not only what meets the eye but also along the bar, more seating in the back pass the washrooms and an extension to the restaurant seating is outside. The noise level is more on the louder side but still low enough to hear your table. We got the Singaporean crab cake which I would recommend. It comes with one crab cake but enough to split with two people. We got the whole fish that was fun to eat. Made us feel like we were playing janga or battle ship as we dig chunks of the fish on each end. The sauce of all our food was delicious. Wow, Tar & Roses never disappoints when we come here! This is now our 3rd time coming, but this is the first time the menu has really changed since our initial visit. My in-laws were in town so we wanted to treat them to one of our favorite restaurants. This was our first time being seated inside. Usually we've been in the courtyard area, but it was nice to explore another part of the restaurant. It's a little noisy at times, but still manageable to hear. For appetizers / small plates we got oxtail dumplings, yellowtail crudo and lemon ricotta gnocchi. The food came out quickly after we ordered and everything tasted amazing. For large dishes and veggies we all ended up getting the Hanger Steak lol and got wood roasted artichoke and cauliflower. Everything was absolutely delicious! The steak had some much flavor and every vegetable tasted amazing. The steak came with asparagus, a tomato slice and kale I think. I had a Cabernet Sauvignon that paired really well with the meat. The artichoke and cauliflower were also really good. My husband and I are not big artichoke people, but anything Tar & Roses is serving I have trust in that it will be really good at the very least. The artichoke was beyond good and I enjoyed every bit and flavor that came from it. If I could have artichokes like that all the time I would definitely eat them more often. For dessert we all ordered the strawberry crostata with ice cream. We get this dessert every time we come here and it's always wonderful. The oxtail dumplings are a MUST! It had great flavor and texture. Every bite was a burst of happiness. The shell fish pot was really good too. It was savory, warm and had a hint of curry spice. I loved the flavor of the miso eggplant but a piece I tasted was undercooked. I would skip the lettuce cups. They were just ok. The bread pudding dessert was another winner for me. It was warm, sweet, full of spice and not too big portion wise for an end of the meal dish. Service was excellent. The ambiance was chic, intimate, and dark. This is easily one of the best tasting restaurants in Santa Monica. It's a fine dining experience without breaking the bank if you still want to treat yourself. You must order the oxtail dumplings! The four-piece appetizer is delicious and isn't like anything you can typically find. Heck, I'll come back here and order multiple dishes of it as my meal as apparently, that's what some people do! I was debating the duck breast and was so happy I had ordered it. It was perfectly chewy sitting between hazelnuts on top and of a blanket of brussel sprouts and polenta below. We also ordered the black cod on risotto and an acorn squash side that came with burrata and molasses - three things you'd never imagine together and oh, man do the flavors work well! That was more than enough food, but it was so delicious that we wanted to try the Strawberry Ricotta Crostata because why not? The inside has more of a hip night out with friends vibe as there's music and can be a bit louder. The indoor patio has more of a nice restaurant feel for a date. Highly recommend! read more

Easily one of the top 5 meals I've had in Los Angeles. This is my second time and it's better than the first. We also ran late and called ahead and let them know and they happily accommodated us which I loved. I don't even know where to start. The wait staffs recommendations were spot on (insane refreshing spin on the grilled corn side and the beet yogurt dip). Everything was so bright, intentional and delicious. Dessert is a must you can't skip it. Ambiance was great, good combo of a popular place with welcoming vibes. I send everyone I can there. read more

My wife and I went to Tar and Roses for her birthday last night and we absolutely loved it! Service was excellent and we recommend ordering the Bone Marrow, Lamb Shank and Strawberry Ricotta Crostata dessert. The Duck Breast was good but not as balanced of a dish - it could have used more Brussels sprouts so I do see why the server suggested ordering a vegetable dish. The Lamb Shank was the best we've ever had - it is served on sweet potato puree, was perfectly cooked, with 3 pita breads to eat with and top with Greek yogurt (labneh) and their delicious hot sauce (zhoug or sahawiq). The strawberry ricotta dessert was served on a baked crostata that had a croissant-like crispness to it. The honeycomb ice cream it came with was a perfect pairing and I could eat tubs and tubs of it! We devoured this dessert and wanted more! Overall, I highly recommend Tar & Roses - they have many small dishes to try, or a whole fried snapper for two or dry aged ribeye for two that they're famous for as well! I would park in one of the parking structures near 3rd St Promenade which has the first 90 minutes free. read more
