What an amazing pork store! They have the ceiling filled with hanging sweet, hot dry sausage. Soppressata is hanging too, watch your head if your over 7 foot. These are the best tasting sausage you'll ever eat. They have a large assortment of many prosciutto's, all delicious.Besides the pork, you can choose from many different olives and cheeses. Smoked mozzarella is my favorite there, again no one compares to this perfectly made mozzarella. The counter help is so friendly and accommodating. There is always a platter of items to sample and what a great way to try items you may never have tasted. If you are in the area and want to visit an authentic Italian meat shop this is the place to be! The variety here is amazing...but lets not forget about how the place is set up! There are different kinds of meats and sausages and other items hanging from the ceiling and stacked in cold display cases all over the store. They also make sandwiches and add olive oil to their bread. The olive oil and bread is delicious! We've gone here for more than 30 years to get items for our family antipasto. Second year in a row, Prosciutto di Parma was fatty and dry. We thought last year was a fluke but this year we were also disappointed. Then, we asked for unsalted mozzarella twice and they acted as though it was unsalted. Impressive but small pork store on Arthur Ave in the Bronx. Cured meats literally hang from the ceiling above you and the smell emanating is infectious. Ham, salami, sausages, soppressata, you name it, they have it along with cheeses, paste and cured olives. Bought some sharp provolone and the quality was impressive. Pork Store. End of review, enough said. Really though, this place is awesome. If you like sausage, this is your place. So far I've tried the sweet sopressata, pepporoni and salumi. All have been perfect. I'll definitely be returning to try some different stuff, especially the extra spicy sopressata. Just as a precaution, they slice their meat SUPER thin...so if that's not how you like it, make sure to specify that you want it sliced a little thicker. I've never been to a place like this before. Every square inch of the ceiling is covered with sausage hanging down. It's mind boggling. They call it the 'sausage chandelier'. They also sell a variety of pasta options as well as mozzarella. They had giant chunks of mozzarella as free samples, and it was absolutely heavenly. I also sampled the sausage, which was, no surprise, delightful. What a gem this place is. Very old school Italian. Looking forward to going back next time I'm in the Bronx. read more

Oh you can't miss this gem. Yes, it is pungent since the salamis hang from the ceiling, old school. The meats here are incredible. They have a nice assortment for antipasti. Cheese, peppers and artichoke. Buy a sausage the way you like it. Really fresh, really aged. Hot or sweet. The fresh meats are nice as well. Fresh made rings of sausage gleam in the case encouraging you to dream of the meal you'd make. Match them up with house made braciola and make Sunday gravy, or throw them on the grill and throw back a couple of beers with your friends. I ordered a pound of porketta and it was the best porketta I've ever had in my life! Wish I bought more. I'm from CT and the best we can find around here is longhini brand which I like but this one from the pork store is just so tasty. It's wrapped in pig skin and then cooked. I don't know why this place keeps its original name. They should just call it the meat cave. Calabria is one of a kind because--at least to my knowledge--it is the last Italian meat store in NYC to be allowed to hang its homemade dried sausage from the ceiling. And boy oh boy, do they hang it from the ceiling. The pictures here don't do it justice; literally the entire customer area has sausage hanging over it. Suffice to say, vegan options are sparse here; but if you want a variety of homemade Italian sausage, it's hard to do better than this. The dried sausage is the biggest attraction here as expected. Available as soppresata or regular dried sausage, hot or sweet, as a chunk or a link (they sell by the half-link too), it is sublime. Not too much spice, packed with porky flavor, there are few I've found that can measure up. This isn't even to speak of other dry sausages they make (cacciatorini for instance), the variety of fresh pinwheels and links in different flavors, or other imported stuff that they have. They even have specialty items like Nduja (a soft, spreadable spicy sausage), which are nigh impossible to find otherwise in the NY metro area--let alone homemade. The countermen here are experienced as you can expect and very efficient; they do a good job of asking the right questions to package things the way you want (ready for the freezer, slicing for the dry salami, etc.). One other thing about this place that makes it dangerous to visit: there are always free samples available, and the countermen are happy to provide others if requested. Expect to spend money coming in here; thankfully not too much though as prices are very reasonable (even less on average than other Italian pork stores). I just counted that I used the word sausage in some form at least 15 different times in this review. Do glad that this is still open on ever-shrinking Arthur Avenue. This place is a treasure and I will never be kosher because of it. read more

This could quite possibly be my favorite store in the world, ever. Like, if I got to choose my last meal, each of the 37 courses would come from here. The star of the show is the housemade hot sopressata that adorns the ceiling. I cannot recommend this enough. They also make an awesome housemade mozzarella here, that can be up to like 2lbs per ball. In addition to cured meats, they also have some of the best fresh sausages you will ever find. I recommend either the hot italian sausage or the broccoli rabe sausage. Pair these with the fresh noodles from Borgatti's, and you are in business, sir. In the last month, I've moved away from Arthur Ave. Before moving, I made a long overdue visit to the pork store for some pizza toppings, and I have to say I am ashamed I did not patronize this store more often. I love this place. It is a little dark inside, and with all the meat hanging from the ceiling it feels like some old Italian larder. And oh the meat! The meats they sell at Calabria is all the proof I need that I could never survive as a vegetarian! The prosciutto di parma is melt in your mouth good, sliced so thinly that a quarter pound can be stretched quite a ways. I spent about 8 dollars here on pepperoni and sausage and the like, and had enough for three pizzas and plenty of meaty nibbles for me and my friends to munch on while we were cooking. The prices for the fine Italian delicacies sold here aren't cheap, but they actually turn out to be quite affordable if you are buying in small quantities. Bonus points for friendly employees who will happily slice up little samples of delicious dried meats.
