No one beats Mike's when it beats to purveying the very best salumeria and cheese, among other provisions. The prepared dishes also hit different. The famous eggplant parm is phenomenal. I don't even like eggplant and I'm in love with this dish. All of the sandwiches hit too. The Italian sushi is interesting, but eat it fresh as the arugula doesn't stand up to refrigeration too well. After seeing an Instagram post about its Italian sushi, I decided to take a trip up to Bronx Little Italy. There's a line at this small aisle. I finally was served by Chef David Greco himself. He beat Bobby Flay in Eggplant throw down. You can see the picture of him on the show. Dave is super friendly and engaging. The Italian sushi is definitely very innovative. Soft prosciutto is rolled in sushi style with filling of arugula, cheese, and sun dried tomatoes. There are two kinds of dipping: balsamic and pesto. Both of them are complimenting the sushi. Eggplant parmigiana is definitely a must try. It's like a lasagna made of layers of thin fried eggplant. You can make mozzarella pull. So delicious, not surprised that he beat Bobby Flay. read more

I've been wanting to come to this place, and also Arthur Avenue, ever since I saw the owner, Dave, have an eggplant Parmesan "throwdown" with Bobby Flay. Today, I finally made it to Arthur Avenue. I finally met Dave, the son of the late "Mike", and he was such a friendly person just like I remember seeing him on TV.. He got a chuckle, when I told him that I had re-watched the episode just this morning. The place is in the back of the Arthur Avenue retail market. The place is huge. They have deli meats, sausages, cheeses, antipasti, you name it, they have it. However, I was here for the eggplant parm, plain and simple. You can order it as a sandwich, or as a plate. I ordered the plate. You can also order it uncooked, and cook it when you get home. They have table seating. I ordered the Dish, and they brought it to my table. It was amazing! They peel the eggplant, and then cut it long and thin like lasagna noodles. It was not over breaded, and it was not greasy. The cheese that came with it was savory and delicious, and I loved the sauce, or "gravy" as Italians call it. The Dish was a total home run. It also came with bread, but they didn't give me any butter with the bread. Who cares? The bread was perfect for sopping up the rest of that wonderful sauce/gravy. . I want to come back. This was our first visit to Arthur Avenue, and we ran into Mike's by accident, as it's tucked into the back corner of a semi-indoor market space. We were immediately greeted with a large menu and a cozy and casual little dining area- and couldn't resist trying it out. We had the homemade style wine, a cheese plate, antipasto platter and calamari and loved it all. For those with sensitivities, one word of caution is that folks can smoke in the marketplace area. 1/23/25: this is THE place for Italian delicacies, sandwiches, hot food, deli cold cuts, olives, etc. and catering, as well. The people behind the counter know their products and are more than willing to help and deliver exactly what you ask for. And of course some cherry peppers stuffed with parmesan and prosciutto, a perfect, spicy wake-up call to the taste buds. But what I go back for, again and again, is an incredible sandwich: sopresetta, mozarella, roasted peppers, lettuce, and tomato on a roll with oil and vinegar. It is the tops, and if Cole Porter had ever had one, he would have included it in his hit song, "You're the Top," along with the "nimble tread of the feed of Fred Astaire," among other blessings the world has given us. On a friday, I ordered over $100 worth of stuff and paid $49 extra for expedited shipping. I emailed them and asked the process, to be sure the package came in time for a Wednesday delivery. They said the order would go out Monday and be delivered Tuesday. Monday the deli called me and said there was an issue with shipping but it would definitely go out Tuesday and be delivered on Wed. They never sent it. I emailed them and they said it would go out Wed for Thursday, but thats too late for when I needed it. I asked to cancel. They said no, too late, its already packed and that I should've called the deli to ask when it would be delivered, as delivery on a specific date int always guaranteed. I told them , no I didnt need to that, as THEY called me to confirm delivery. I found their attitude poor and they never took responsibility for not sending my gift for someone. It's a pretty big market so as you keep walking towards the deli you see these guys hand making cigars (pretty cool) reminds me of when I went to Cuba, then towards the right side walking down they have fresh meat and sausages ready to order, then finally you see the long line for sandwiches, cold cuts, fresh mozzarella ect.... it's very busy and you may have to repeat your order a few times but you'll end up with a delicious sandwich. I ordered the "godfather" with sundry tomatoes (which makes everything taste better) Turkey salami and the regular lettuce tomato... blah blah splash of vinaigrette. For two sandwiches it came out to $32 (yeah pricey for a sandwich) but to me it was worth it, for my husband, ... not so much! I'm gonna miss this place!
