They even offered us tacos while we waited for our food, which was a great touch. It is a small spot with limited seating, so it is more of a to-go place, but it is definitely worth trying. Went here on a whim after checking out a Holiday Yuletide oddities market, it was right next to the market and we were feeling snackish. There was a delious smell of grilled carne asada wafting in the air so we popped in to look at the menu. Huge menu with lots of options, as soon as I saw a good looking salsa bar and a ton of orders of menudo rolling out, I knew I needed to eat here. I ordered Birria tacos and the bestie picked sopes with carnitas. Shoutout to a taqueria that provides complimentary chips and chiles toreados! We were delighted with the huge portions and was super pleased with how delicious everything was! Birria and carnitas were fork tender, flavor was on point and not too salty. I've been getting this more often recently since it's close by and on Grubhub. The carne asada super burrito is my default order now. At $14, the price feels reasonable, especially for the portion. Best Mexican food on the Westend of Alameda. They have a low carb burrito that I love and the chicken taquitos de pollo plate with rice and beans is so delicious. This taqueria is a local favorite and you can always see people coming and going to pick up their takeout orders. You can also expect to find a few customers enjoying their meal inside the restaurant's two large dining areas. In the main dining area you can always catch local sports games playing on their flatscreen TV near the restrooms. The staff are friendly and accommodating. We have been coming here for years. Food is not always consistent but when its good, its good! Yesterday we can for 2 bowls, which came on a plate lol! We added rice and got maybe 2 tablespoons, the guace was running and not good. The worst part was the bottom of the plate was full of water from the lettuce. I met a buddy here to brainstorm some ideas over lunch. The building interior is very interesting with high ceilings and red brick in parts. It feels very unique and somehow old world. Today is Mexican Independence Day. Before heading to Crown Bay Nursing and Rehab Center, I decided to stop in at Calafia. The sandwich board's special (right outside the entrance) listed 3 tamales for $9.95. Okay, I can go for that deal. It has been many years since I had their pork tamales. It used to cost 3 for $6.00. That was when they first opened about 20 years ago. I always enjoy their fish tacos, but at $5.25 each, I decided to forgo the fish tacos at this time. I do miss the barrels of the agua frescas. Yet they still have the Jamaica and horchata in the refrigerator. The salsa bar is still there, which is a good thing. My husband always order the carne asada super burrito, which is enough to feed the both of us. Most of the time we order the food to go since we don't live too far from Calafia. Today they were busy taking care of customers who arrived before I did. The wait wasn't that long. I got my order about a minute before the #20 AC bus arrived. Perfect timing. Also had pastor. Both were bland. Tacos were somehow cold and I ate them right away. Chips are a $1 extra, many other places on the island they're free and cheaper taco cost. The most watered down horchata I've had in my life.
