Really inviting and authentic-feeling Mexican restaurant. I was surprised the bar was tucked in the back instead of the front, but it worked well for the space. The chips and salsa were delicious and overall I really enjoyed my meal, even the leftovers the next day! The staff were attentive and friendly. If you like spice, definitely ask for the habanero salsa or a roasted jalapeño on the side.

Their service was really good. Brought chips, salsa and water upon seating. Prompt and friendly with taking our order. Nachos were filled with toppings and plenty of chips. Salsas were super tasty. Mixed flautas were crunchy and tasty! 3 varieties with guacamole and sour cream. We were filled up and brought home leftovers.

Sope with chicken, half size - was okay

I ordered the half size chicken sope. I wanted to like it, but the sope was falling apart. I feel like it could have been more deeply fried. I make these at home and they are crisp and not falling apart. The rest was okay.

I went to this restaurant/bar last week and it is really nice. Inside had plenty of seats and a nice bar. A pleasant atmosphere with a family friendly vibe. We decided to sit outside and were served fast. Delicious free chips and salsa to start with a glass of water. I ordered a pina colada in a tall glass. Very tasty! My guest had a Jalisco in a cute copper mug. I wasn't super hungry so I just ordered the nacho French fries from the appetizer section. Omg they were huge! I ate 3 days worth of lunch from them! Soooo good! And they were only $17 ! Not bad for a total of 4 meals! My guest had a whole red snapper with beans and rice. In all 3 drinks, and the food $100. I was happy.

This is become one of my favorites when I travel to Alameda for work. Nestled just off the water is the friendliest Mexican restaurant. I start my dining experience with a skinny margarita. Note that they have a ton of tequilas/mezcals to choose from. They also offer complementary chips and salsa. For my entrees, I've gotten the steak burrito and flautas. The entrees are packed with flavor and are served as hearty portions, so you definitely get a good bang for your buck! The staff is very friendly and continually check on you throughout your entire meal. The restaurant is usually pretty busy around 7:00pm, so expected a louder environment at that time.

Guacamole con Camaron. I love this guacamole con Cameron & always order at the restaurant. But when I ordered & picked up I was do disappointed. It was not good at all. It didn't taste like the one they serve. They skimped on avocados (I didn't see or taste any chunk of avocados like the usual at the restaurant) & it's so liquidy. I get it avocados are expensive but they freakin' charged $20 for this small container of guacamole!! & it supposed to have tomatoes but didn't see tomatoes. Sorry but I would not recommend this place & I'm not ordering food there again.

So we live about 25 miles away now from here. But we will travel to get their enchiladas that's for sure. I don't know of a place that has such great cheese enchiladas the sauce is pretty tasty. Local hangout and they do have a taco bar connected to the place it's worth going to..

We've been to La Penca Azul a couple times now. They have huge portions, the food is delicious (shoutout to the guac). They've got great service and the ambience is fantastic in their restaurant. Only downside that I'm removing a star for is the burrito I got last night. It's about 95% rice which is disappointing for a massive burrito apart from that the rest of our order was amazing.

    The best Mexican food ever!!

Xochitl, Marie, and the entire staff are so lovely and accommodating. I was here for a birthday party and even though more people showed up they made it happen. I would recommend the restaurant to anyone

The reviews were definitely not exaggerating when they mentioned the portions were HUGE. Surprisingly, this is one of the best takeout orders I've received via Uber Eats. I can't wait to dine in and experience the full menu next time. I ordered the fajitas combo plate with flour tortillas, and honestly, it was amazing! Everything was seasoned to perfection. I usually don't care for refried beans, but theirs were really good. My least favorite item was the flour tortillas; they were too soft for my liking. However, the tortilla chips were excellent. I'm not sure if I got lucky with a fresh batch, but they were hot and fresh. My boyfriend ordered the fried pork tacos, which were also good. I love that they kindly included pickled vegetables and radishes! I go crazy for the pink radishes.

10/13/2024 Time: 12:35 PM 72° Sunny I have dined at the taco bar at this restaurant over six years ago. I forgot that La Penca Azul has a tequila bar. I did my check in for La Penca Azul Taco Bar, which was a mistake on my part. I was invited to join a male friend (actually a Tech alumni) for lunch. Since he was treating me, why not? The last time I had any contact with him was at a picnic at Mosswood Park over eight years ago. La Penca Azul has quite an extensive menu. So many choices and so little time to decide what I wanted to eat. After perusing the menu, I ordered the chicken chimachangas platter. Wow! Two huge chimachangas with the usual sides of rice and refried beans, sour cream and guacamole. My beverage was an Arnold Palmer. Taste test - if the Palmer is to my liking, then the food has to be on point. Beverage and food passed the test. Yay! The portions are generous. The chicken chimachanga was delicious. Shredded chicken breast enclosed in a fried flour tortilla topped with a thin layer of tomato sauce. I should have asked for a small bowl of salsa rosa. Arroz y frijoles refritos were also delicious. I had leftovers, which was my dinner. Waitress was helpful and friendly. I noticed a free agua fresca for a yelp in. It did not apply to a check in at the tequila bar. It was for the taco bar. The next time I visit I will order the jamaica agua fresca. A solo act will allow me more time and an opportunity to review the menu selection thoroughly.

Large and busy restaurant, but with very speedy service! I came on a Monday night and restaurant was buzzing with chatter and laughter from all the patrons. Aesthetically it isn't much, but it's clean. Service was fast and food came out so quickly that we were finished eating in an hour. The portion sizes are large with a reasonable price point. Everything we had was tasty.

Good enough deal to get the burrito and can soda for $14. Burrito itself was good enough. Not something i would crave for though. The tortilla was my favorite part. I wish they tightened the burrito roll. They don't give a lot of meat. The steak one was basically falling apart while eating it. The Carnitas was not chopped up, just few big dry chunks to work on... no slurpability to my burrito which knocks off a star... the salsa was definitely medium to hot heat level spice. I for sure needed the coke to help me finish my burrito without suffering from the heat too much. I will definitely want to try coming again for the chicharron. Hopefully it will be a better experience considering we went closer to the closing time. It's nice that their front is open for folks to just enjoy the space without cars, so that ups the appeal a bit more.

I'd read other reviews saying they were good, and that CRT made their own chips and had good portions. So we tried it when we were nearby. It was a "cheap" ($17) dinner fail. The chips were good. The portion was pretty good, but the nachos were bad. The salsa, separately, was also bad. You picked from tasteless pico de guyo (sp?) or overly hot salsa. No in between. Mouth on fire vs tasteless tomato chunks. The chicken was really bad. Was it old, or just NOT my flavor? Hard to tell the guacamole was thin and too lime-y. I almost wondered if it was from Costco. Cheese was also not good. We had also just exercised, and we were really hungry. This should have tasted good based on our previous exercise. But nope. I would bear loud bad music on repeat and too-bright fluorescent lights if the food was good. But you couldn't get me to go back to CRT ever again. :(

Updates 4/4/26: Today was a catastrophic experience. We came here about 12pm or so. Just FYI…read more We have come to this restaurant several times because we really enjoy their food and drinks. It is like "Our Best Mexican" spot to go to. My wife and I decided to eat outside today. Our table was dirty upon sitting down. Like you could clearly see that it needed ti be wiped down. The hostess did not. We requested lemon with our water when she asked if we wanted something to drink. She brought water and no lemons. I didn't understand the slackness because it was only 2 tables of ppl outside. No one was inside at the time. I ordered my usual which was the red snapper plate with hot sauce and garlic oil on the side. My wife ordered the shrimp/octopus entree. The food came and her's was great. My rice was cold and hard. I had to send it back. My snapper was a bit on the light crispy side. Sure also brought it big bowls of the hot sauce and garlic oil. I was a little in disbelief because normally both of them look like a oil type of sauce. Today they were both clumped because it was served cold. When I begun to eat my snapper, it was a bit wet on the inside and not as cooked as I am used to. I became nauseous because of it. It took a lil min for the waitress to come back and honestly.. I had to speak to another waitress to get it recooked. When my original waitress brought it back out.. it was so much better. She even brought the hot sauce that it normally comes with... it in the texture it normally is and the size. She took back the rice and beans again because at that point.. they were both beyond cold. When they were brought back out, they were both hot.. but the rice was a bit crunchy in certain areas. I was too hungry to complain again.. so I ate around those parts. Now for the drinks (This part pissed me off the most). So, I always order the $20 marg.. which is supposed to have Sieste Langua Blanco, host citrus blend, Grand Mariner float and a shot of Don Julio 1942. That 1sr round of drinks was so watered down. There also was salt/tajin around the part that you hold the glass AND the salt part looked like it was melted on.. no ruin at all was seen. We did not feel anything after drinking it and we should have because of what liquors were supposed to be used. So I went and spoke to the bartender about the weakness of the drinks because I did not feel that my waitress would do a good enough job. He decided to put the next round in smaller glasses with less ice (Originally, he wants me to add another shot for strength.. but I did not feel that I should of they made it right this time). When that drink came, it was light in color and the taste was like a regular marg. The color was not orange, the presentation looked bad. So I took myself back up and questioned the bartender with the hostess standing there. She did not support me at all. At first the bartender acknowledged that he did not put any Grand Marnier in it. Then I questioned the color, so he decided to make it on front of me. He put Pueblo ...resposado, triple sec and a shot of grand mariner (It should have been a floater). Nothing other than the Grand Mariner was correct. Today was when I found out that they do not put the alcohols listed on the menu on the actual drink!!! I was pissed. I asked for the manager because today we have an issue with everything. I got the runaround from the hostess because she agreed like she was getting the manager and she was not and I do believe the bartender knew he messed up to. It took the fake manager over 10 miss to meet me at the bar. The hostess, the bartender and the ways/manager a are all shady!! Only one employee ensured to get the real manager and update me on his ETA because he was not in the building. I spoke with him and he made things right. He even got behind the bar and made the drink as it shouod be presented and taste. I told him that I really love this restaurant and will return.. but i will be going to the bar to get my drinks made in my face. Thank you to him!

These were more like shoestring fries, already seasoned, topped with cheese and steak pieces. Not bad, but let's be real I wouldn't have minded a bigger portion. And with shoestring fries, good luck trying to scoop up all the toppings without making a mess in that little food tray lol. Also grabbed a crispy ground beef taco. It was okay, but every time I took a bite, it completely fell apart like my plans to eat healthy. Could've used a bit more seasoning too (taco snob lol) Don't be shy with the flavor. I rather have it over seasoned than bland : ) Alameda doesn't have a ton of taquerias, which is probably why everyone drives out to Oakland to hit the food trucks on International Blvd (aka E-14th for the OG Bay Area folks) Yadadaimean! Would I come back? Yeah, I would. Food isn't bad, and the prices are decent like I'm not breaking the bank here. Solid 3 stars. It's good, but not quite at that 4-star level for me.....Just saying : )
