This is a small, no-frills Kolkata cuisine restaurant in Milpitas, and the ambience is pretty basic. It's a fully self-serve setup--you order and pay at the counter, pick up paper plates, plastic cutlery (which I'm personally not a fan of), and napkins from the front, and once you're done eating, you're expected to clear your table as well. Given all of this, the expectation of tipping feels a bit confusing. That said, we came here for the food--and it truly delivered. My husband is Bengali and was craving authentic Bengali food, so we decided to try this place over the weekend, and we absolutely loved it. We started with the mutton (goat) cutlet and Mughlai paratha. The mutton cutlet was adequately stuffed, fried crispy to perfection, and tasted really good. The Mughlai paratha by itself was just okay, but when paired with the aloo tarkari (potato curry) it became an instant hit. For the main course, we ordered chicken chow mein and Katla fish curry with white rice, and both dishes truly transported us straight to Kolkata. The flavors were incredibly authentic, homely, and comforting--exactly the kind of food you crave when you miss home. I really wanted to try rasgulla, but I was so full that I had to skip it this time. Definitely going back to try more items from the menu--purely for the food. We back again after a few years and were glad to see that they had expanded to one more location and a food truck. The food truck seems to be in flux for now but once they get a location they'll reopen it. Waiting for that to happen as it'll be closer to home. They have the same simple setup and good simple street food. We've not advanced beyond the egg roll. It's our favorite and we eat it whenever we get an occasion. On top of that we ordered the veggie cutlet. It was also another favorite. Need to eat the biryani and Chinese food . Hopefully we'll get there sooner. This is one of the few spots in Bay Area where you can get Bengali cuisine . Have been here 2 or 3 times . Food is good but I don't like their presentation . They use paper plates, bowls etc which I am not fond of . We have ordered Kolkata mutton biryani from here before and they served it on paper plates which killed my appetite to some extent. They have special buffet menu during jamai sosthi for which price was $25.99 and again I was not impressed by the presentation. Regarding taste, I am most fond of their mutton biryani and vegetable chop. Mishti doi and gurer Rosogolla were not as good as I had from some other places . The outside of the restaurant is also not appealing. It looks like you are getting inside some kinda grocery store. There isn't ample parking but to be fair I didn't have issues in finding one ever . I was craving Pani Puri and this was the closest location to me. Parking lot fits about 5 cars, I was the only person so that was a breeze. This time not so good experience .... We ordered the chicken lunch combo and goat lunch combo. Both of them comes with rice, naan bread, sabji daal (lentil soup with vegetables including cauliflower, cashews etc..), mixed vegetable and chicken/goat curry. Except the main item (chicken/goat curry) everything else is fantastic! When it comes to the chicken/goat curry, they taste good but there's only bones and very little (and I really mean very little) meat on the bone. Honestly, I would rather pay extra for the combo to get at least one decent meat piece rather than getting only bones. The conclusion is still the place is very good in terms of authentic taste but if the management is reading this please change so that there's some meat in meat dishes! People would be more than happy to pay $5 extra if that's what it takes to get a decent meat piece in a meal!! read more

Lot of amazing options from eastern part of India which I absolutely loved. Chicken roll was great. Veggie chops were good too. I have to come back here to try their biriyani which my friends say was good. They get a lot of DoorDash orders so it's possible there will be a wait time before you get your order if you are visiting in person. The ambience is simple. They have regular chairs table. Updated review and they've improved significantly! They added a lot more options to their menu, including classic indo-chinese items, and the food is still incredibly tasty! This time my mom and I tried the jhal muri, egg puff, chicken egg roll, normal egg roll, paneer big belly sandwich, and the gobi manchurian. The jhal muri was classic and good way to start the meal! The egg puff was also very yummy and the pastry was flaky and fresh. The chicken egg roll is bomb as always and the paneer sandwich was also tasty. The gobi manchurian was so fresh and crispy, and they don't use food coloring! A hole in the wall that probably can go unnoticed unless you have intentions to eat one of the best ever Jhal Muri or Rassgulla (especially Nolen Gurer kind) . Parking can get pretty tight and you might have to resort to street parking at times. It was not very crowded at the time and we got ourselves settled on a table close to the counter. We were a group of 4 and ordered quite a few items to get a taste of the variety that they have to offer. We started with 2 orders of Jhal Muri and an order of Dahu Phuhcka , Calcutta egg roll and masala tea. Perfect starters that are well balanced in taste and are made with a blend of mustard oil (for Jhal Muri especially) that lends to its amazing and authentic taste. Probably the best Jhalmuri that we have had till date and that Mustard oil definitely made it taste great. For the dinner part we ordered kadhai paneer , goat curry and veg biryani with a few garlic naans. All items tasted good and well presented. Adding gold to glory was the Rassgulla that is an absolute recommendation if you happen to be around. read more

Been here twice, a year apart. Found it for the first time while coming back from Sierra Vista. A new chaat shop is always exciting lol. Haven't seen a Calcutta based restaurant in the South Bat before so it definitely adds a different profile. I did look through a few of the reviews before ordering my food. - Veg Cutlet: Crispy, authentic, and delicious. As others have pointed out, it has beetroot, and they separates it from what you might get in other places. I love my Curlet with beetroot. Wish it was a little bigger for the 8 dollar price and because it tastes really good. - Egg Puff: I ordered it purely because it had an interesting shape (in picture) when compared to the chicken/paneer/veg. It was because there was a whole egg inside. That is authentic too. Not all places make it this way. Flaky and nicely made but a tad bland in terms of masala, I'd have liked some more. - Kolkata style Chicken Biryani: I would like to say I knew what to expect because I've had the Bengali style Chicken Biryani before. Actually I've had the Bangladeshi style. It's sort of mild in terms of its spice but it does have the flavor profile of the dum biryani cooked in chicken which I like. The basmati rice and saffron flavor also shines through. I am generally not the biggest dum Biryani chicken because it is usually not cooked properly but I must say the chicken was fantastic in this, very well cooked. It had a potato with skin which added to the dish. Portion was huge, I could only finish half of it in person. Might not be to everyone's liking, but I'd order again. I wish they had added caramelized onions instead of raw onions though. - Paneer Big Belly Sandwich: This to me was very ok, could've done with more flavor/sauce/spice according to me and was bland. It is probably authentic as well though, I am not sure. - Ghughni Pav - Nice Ghughni. I've had Ghughni, in its name once before (actually from a chef who's from Orissa) and this Ghughni was good for sure. The peas was well cooked and blended. Towards the mild side. - Calcutta Street King Egg Roll: This was a dish I was slightly disappointed with probably because it had too many veggies for me. It's actually a Paratha coated with egg rather than with eggs/egg pieces inside. So I'd prefer more eggs here. Also a little too strong on the mustard flavor for me. Might be authentic, but I was not the biggest fan. There are dishes that I really liked so I would personally stick to them from next time. There is a mustard flavor in a lot of dishes (also mustard sauce on the side in some) so if you don't like mustard maybe you can ask them to keep it a little lower profile, without removing the authenticity of the dish. 4 stars overall given my liking for most of the dishes that I had. They are definitely pocket friendly overall! It's a bakery with a grocery store/halal meal shop next door so maybe ambiance is not something they care about, which is fair. But they have a decent amount of space and restaurant style dishes so maybe they could consider investing in more of a restaurant feel and proper plates. Food is currently served in paper plates and cutlery and napkins are self serve. Food comes out pretty quickly and definitely felt fresh! We have been coming to this place since its first weekend of opening. First it was just puffs, appetizers place with couple of mishti (dessert) options. Several months earlier they have expanded this to full menu with biriyani, chicken, mutton dishes, kolkata chinese- they have it all. I'm happy to share that we finally found authentic bengali food in the Bay Area. The spices, the aromas, and the flavors of almost everything we tried were authentic and true to my husband's bengali roots. The phuchka pani was salty and tart just like it should be, and the alu filling was great. It was a great chaat experience. The vegetable chop was delicious and full of beetroots, and the flavor was impeccable! It was served with kashundi and ketchup. The salad it came with was a nice touch. The jhal muri was amazing with a strong hint of mustard oil. It was just perfect! The shingara was nice as well. My husband wanted it to be a bit more salty, but I loved the texture and the filling. We took chicken biryani and misti doi to-go, and they were both amazing! Chicken biryani had a drum and a thigh with a medium-sized potato. It came with mildly salted raita. It wasn't spicy at all, and there were strong hints of kewra in every bite. We enjoyed our biryani and misti doi as it was very different and flavorful. The alu puff was tasty, too! It had nice stuffing and reminded me of my college days in India. The chicken puff, however, was very disappointing with practically no filling inside and flavorless entirely but still a nice snack if you're someone like me who likes to eat puffs with ketchup. We'll be back to try their other dishes and can't wait to tey their fish fry. This is a local restaurant, and the chef is very clearly inclined towards serving authentic bengali food. The fish cutlet is a must try at this location. It was fried to perfection, crispy on the outside and moist/ piping hot on the inside with flaky layers of fish. The mustard sauce adds additional flavor to the dish. Mutton biriyani was alright. It was more fragrant(with essence) than flavorful. However, the quality of meat was good(tender). Tried mishti doi for dessert, however the yogurt was slimy and it was either very low in sugar or yoghurt was tangy. Service was fine. So I doubt it came from this restaurant food. Taking care of hygiene and wearing masks while food preparation and serving are important. We met some relatives who had heard about this spot through their friends and I am glad they did. There are so many Indian restaurants in the Bay Area and most are cookie cutter... they all have the same menu. I love finding those restaurants which are off the beaten path and offer some unique dishes. Calcutta Chaat is one of them. They serve Bengali food which is pretty rare to find in the US. Everything we ate was delicious. The unique Bengali chaat items to the sweet yogurt to the more typical North Indian dishes...they were all consistently great. The spot itself is pretty bare bones. You don't go here for the decor, you go here for the food. This is the quintessential hole in the wall that serves incredible food. Bapi who is the owner was wonderful and warm. This is the only Bengali (not Bangladeshi) restaurants I know of, so definitely had to give it a try. I've been back here a few times. I thought my first experience was the best overall, the second time I came I felt as though it was a bit lackluster. This restaurant is very casual. They use paper plates and utensils, which you have to get yourself. You also have to order at the counter, but they bring your food to you. The appetizers are great, especially the pani puri and fish fry. I love biryani, but I felt as though the biryani was better the first time I got it than the second. The second time, it was a bit bland. They did add some Indo-Chinese offerings too, from which we tried the chicken noodles. We did enjoy this quite a bit. We also tried the chili chicken, which reminded me a bit of orange chicken given the coating and lack of sauce. I did not enjoy this one as much. In addition, they took away the cakes from their offerings, those were really good so I was disappointed. Overall, I did enjoy the offerings here. I'll probably try it again to see whether the second, less enjoyable experience was on an off day, as I did truly enjoy it the first time around. read more

Bengali fish fry cutlet was fish fried in some marination basically and we get two pieces with small salad and the taste was very good and i could've had more. There is some yellow sauce with fish cutlet and was awesome.Then street king egg roll and the taste was very tasty. The chicken puff had a super flaky and crumbly pastry shell. However the chicken filling was pretty dry, ok in taste, and could have been more generous. The Chicken Dum Biryani was a mixed bag if you were specifically looking for Calcutta biryani. It does have the compulsory potato chunk besides the chicken. The Rose water (or was it Kewra? I am not sure) was pretty prominent whose aroma differentiated it from all the other Hyderabadi dum biryanis I've had. There were two pieces of chicken (a thigh and a drumstick) which were a little dry. It was undeniably a pretty good dum biryani dish, but I'm not sure it hit all the right notes for a "Calcutta" dum biryani. The sweet yogurt, "Mishti Doi", was a decent replica of the real deal. It was not super sweet like the typical dessert, which I appreciate, but did not have the hints of saffron and/or sweetened condensed milk. It was a close representation, but I've had better from other stores in the south bay (I forget exactly where as it was many years ago; it was a small store near Fremont that also sold frozen hilsa). The subtle sweetness is a double-edged sword; it's better for our health, but takes away from the authentic taste. All in all, I wouldn't tell my friends to drive over for a taste of Calcutta. But at the same time I wouldn't discourage them from picking up the aforementioned items above. It's pretty good, but it's not good enough to go out of the way to scratch that itch. read more

The place was deserted when we came in, the person at the ordering counter would have rather been anywhere else except where he was and doing anything else than what he was here for. But it was late weekend afternoon, so I guess, this can be excused. But our experience thus far, made us apprehensive of all the promising and excellent reviews we had read on Yelp for the food served here. Ghughni aar Paruruti - Basically this is the Calcutta version of the North Indian Staple Chana Masala and served with Bread (pav (a beloved Bombay side dish) , where the Chickpeas are replaced by Green peas and dish is milder. We felt that the peas could have been a wee bit more cooked and the curry a little more spicy - but hey that is just us! But the Hawaiian sweet bread served with it was a letdown. It did not suit the dish as much. Overall rating - 3/5 2. Chicken Puff - This was authentic to its Calcutta roots - the spices in which the chicken filling was marinated before baking it into a flaky puff, reminded me of my times in Calcutta, grabbing one of these as a child, while surrounded by family and loud jovial conversations. A quiet and nice spot for Friday lunch! There is a small parking lot in front and the place was empty when we came. We have to order at the counter and wait at the table for them to bring it. We ordered a samosa chaat, gobi manchurian, mutton ghugni, kolkatta dum mutton biriyani and misti doi. We also ordered to-go chicken fried rice. The samosa chaat was really good! Loved the flavor and it was slightly in the tangy side. I really like to bite on the big pieces of samosa and it was good. It was more on the saucy side and I felt the quantity was huge for a single serving. Gobi Manchurian was yummy. It was dry but saucy and a little bit spicy. Well battered and crunchy, the way I like it. Mutton ghugni was ok. Not too flavourful but can eat it out like a soup & they suggested it for us. There was around 4 pieces and lots of yellow peas. The kolkutta dum biriyani portion size was huge. Being a South Indian I felt that the biriyani flavor wasn't as much as the ones we usually eat. But still it was good! What stood out to me was how soft and fatty the pieces of mutton were, melt-in-the-mouth. It came with a small plate of raita. Misti doi was good and perfect dessert for someone who likes the tangy yogurt taste and not anything too sweet. The chicken fried rice was really good, with a lot of veggies and chicken in it.
