    Jhal Muri
    Mitali A.

I am glad we gave this place a try! This place looks average, but the food is far above average. It's really good. We ordered the veg puff, vegetable cutlet, jhal muri, mishti doi, panipuri/puchka and egg roll. Everything was great. Must try. The service was quick too, hardly 5 min wait. The place was not fancy but clean.

A hole in the wall place if you are craving the Kolkata taste. Ambience was average - quiet for a Sunday morning with not too many people Service - counter service, but a bit slow. Had to request for my kokum sharbat twice. Food (3/5) - while good, I wasn't blown away. Fuchka was a bit spice for me but was what it was meant to be Cutlet - this one disappointed. The cutlet itself had no flavor till you used the mustard dip Bhugni - was nice but perhaps a side of green and tamarind chutneys would have helped Kokum sarbat- this one blew me away! Flavourful with enough sweetness. Order this!

Quick friendly service, great food and flavors. Their Manchurian is quite good - small portions but hits the mark. Like the ginger flavor on it. Simple ambiance - nothing fancy.

Updated review and they've improved significantly! They added a lot more options to their menu, including classic indo-chinese items, and the food is still incredibly tasty! This time my mom and I tried the jhal muri, egg puff, chicken egg roll, normal egg roll, paneer big belly sandwich, and the gobi manchurian. The jhal muri was classic and good way to start the meal! The egg puff was also very yummy and the pastry was flaky and fresh. The chicken egg roll is bomb as always and the paneer sandwich was also tasty. The gobi manchurian was so fresh and crispy, and they don't use food coloring! I noticed they also have mishti doi but didn't try it this time, look forward to coming back soon and trying more items!

A hole in the wall that probably can go unnoticed unless you have intentions to eat one of the best ever Jhal Muri or Rassgulla (especially Nolen Gurer kind) . Parking can get pretty tight and you might have to resort to street parking at times. It was not very crowded at the time and we got ourselves settled on a table close to the counter. We were a group of 4 and ordered quite a few items to get a taste of the variety that they have to offer. We started with 2 orders of Jhal Muri and an order of Dahu Phuhcka , Calcutta egg roll and masala tea. Perfect starters that are well balanced in taste and are made with a blend of mustard oil (for Jhal Muri especially) that lends to its amazing and authentic taste. Probably the best Jhalmuri that we have had till date and that Mustard oil definitely made it taste great. For the dinner part we ordered kadhai paneer , goat curry and veg biryani with a few garlic naans. All items tasted good and well presented. Adding gold to glory was the Rassgulla that is an absolute recommendation if you happen to be around.

Been here twice, a year apart. Found it for the first time while coming back from Sierra Vista. A new chaat shop is always exciting lol. Haven't seen a Calcutta based restaurant in the South Bat before so it definitely adds a different profile. I did look through a few of the reviews before ordering my food. - Veg Cutlet: Crispy, authentic, and delicious. As others have pointed out, it has beetroot, and they separates it from what you might get in other places. I love my Curlet with beetroot. Wish it was a little bigger for the 8 dollar price and because it tastes really good. - Egg Puff: I ordered it purely because it had an interesting shape (in picture) when compared to the chicken/paneer/veg. It was because there was a whole egg inside. That is authentic too. Not all places make it this way. Flaky and nicely made but a tad bland in terms of masala, I'd have liked some more. - Kolkata style Chicken Biryani: I would like to say I knew what to expect because I've had the Bengali style Chicken Biryani before. Actually I've had the Bangladeshi style. It's sort of mild in terms of its spice but it does have the flavor profile of the dum biryani cooked in chicken which I like. The basmati rice and saffron flavor also shines through. I am generally not the biggest dum Biryani chicken because it is usually not cooked properly but I must say the chicken was fantastic in this, very well cooked. It had a potato with skin which added to the dish. Portion was huge, I could only finish half of it in person. Might not be to everyone's liking, but I'd order again. I wish they had added caramelized onions instead of raw onions though. - Paneer Big Belly Sandwich: This to me was very ok, could've done with more flavor/sauce/spice according to me and was bland. It is probably authentic as well though, I am not sure. - Ghughni Pav - Nice Ghughni. I've had Ghughni, in its name once before (actually from a chef who's from Orissa) and this Ghughni was good for sure. The peas was well cooked and blended. Towards the mild side. - Calcutta Street King Egg Roll: This was a dish I was slightly disappointed with probably because it had too many veggies for me. It's actually a Paratha coated with egg rather than with eggs/egg pieces inside. So I'd prefer more eggs here. Also a little too strong on the mustard flavor for me. Might be authentic, but I was not the biggest fan. There are dishes that I really liked so I would personally stick to them from next time. There is a mustard flavor in a lot of dishes (also mustard sauce on the side in some) so if you don't like mustard maybe you can ask them to keep it a little lower profile, without removing the authenticity of the dish. 4 stars overall given my liking for most of the dishes that I had. They are definitely pocket friendly overall! It's a bakery with a grocery store/halal meal shop next door so maybe ambiance is not something they care about, which is fair. But they have a decent amount of space and restaurant style dishes so maybe they could consider investing in more of a restaurant feel and proper plates. Food is currently served in paper plates and cutlery and napkins are self serve. Food comes out pretty quickly and definitely felt fresh! Owner was pretty friendly with us and proud of the food they serve.

I'm happy to share that we finally found authentic bengali food in the Bay Area. The spices, the aromas, and the flavors of almost everything we tried were authentic and true to my husband's bengali roots. The phuchka pani was salty and tart just like it should be, and the alu filling was great. It was a great chaat experience. The vegetable chop was delicious and full of beetroots, and the flavor was impeccable! It was served with kashundi and ketchup. The salad it came with was a nice touch. The jhal muri was amazing with a strong hint of mustard oil. It was just perfect! The shingara was nice as well. My husband wanted it to be a bit more salty, but I loved the texture and the filling. We took chicken biryani and misti doi to-go, and they were both amazing! Chicken biryani had a drum and a thigh with a medium-sized potato. It came with mildly salted raita. It wasn't spicy at all, and there were strong hints of kewra in every bite. We enjoyed our biryani and misti doi as it was very different and flavorful. The alu puff was tasty, too! It had nice stuffing and reminded me of my college days in India. The chicken puff, however, was very disappointing with practically no filling inside and flavorless entirely but still a nice snack if you're someone like me who likes to eat puffs with ketchup. We'll be back to try their other dishes and can't wait to tey their fish fry. This is a local restaurant, and the chef is very clearly inclined towards serving authentic bengali food. The flavors are amazing, and I wish them good luck. Can't wait to see this place grow :)

This review is based on the two pastries I got. My boyfriend and I were craving a snack and Calcutta Chaat & Bakery popped up on my Yelp. We came in and just ordered two puffs (Chicken & Veggie). The pastries were buttery and flaky! We actually loved the veggie one a lot more than the chicken. We're not vegetarian, but the veggie one had so much more flavor! I'd like to try more snacks from here.

So far my experiences here have been pleasant, with the service being friendly and there being an ample amount of seating inside. I've noticed that the food tends to run on the spicier side (we ordered mild and yet it was still spicy, though perhaps just a sign of my spice tolerance failing me), but outside of that it tasted good. Panni Puri - This was my first time trying a panni puri and it tasted really good, even though I found it spicy (we ordered mild). I especially loved the texture of the onions inside of it. I ate it earlier on which made it harder for me to tell which other dishes were spicy and which ones weren't at the time as a result of its lingering spiciness, but I would happily order it again given the opportunity. Punugulu/Veggie Puff/Vegetarian Fried Rice - All three of these were good and I do recall them being non-spicy. The veggie puff was especially refreshing after trying to get through the paneer pulav Mirchi Bajji - These were also good and surprisingly not as spicy as I thought they would be, considering that they have chili peppers in them Naan with House Vegetable Curry - The vegetable curry was really spicy and it took me a while to realize this because I was still dealing with the effects of the panni puri while I was eating this. Had I not brought some of it home as leftovers I probably would've thought that this was non-spicy Paneer Pulav - Much spicier than expected. I needed to use some of the curd to tone it down but it was still good. The texture of the rice was good too The cold drinks on their menu come in a reusable bottle and from their display I can assume that their desserts are the same way. So far the ones I've tried (mango lassi, rose milk, and chikoo shake) have been refreshing. There's also a falooda section that closes at around 8:00 pm, but I haven't been able to try them yet as both times we got there past eight. Overall a pleasant experience in spite of the spiciness. Perhaps one day I'll be strong enough to handle it without the curd, but it'll probably take a couple of additional visits before I can.

It's been sitting there for a while, so the wifey and I finally decided to drive down to Milpitas and give this Thali place a try. I'm glad we did because their Thali is probably one of the best we've had, if not the best. FYI Thali is LUNCH only. Here is my take. Food (4.5 stars) +The Combo Thali for around $18 is the way to go. Don't overthink it and don't order anything else. You get a little bit of everything, which is exactly why we like Thali. If there's something you don't like, just give it to your partner. My wife doesn't like lamb, so I ended up with double lamb. Bonus for me! + Lamb curry was probably my favorite. Tender meat with a flavorful curry and it went perfectly with the rice. Since my wife donated hers to me, I had plenty! + Fried fish is also very good. You don't get a huge piece, but with so many other things on the plate, it's enough. That's the beauty of Thali--you get a few bites of everything instead of committing to one giant dish. + Chicken curry was also good. Nothing on the plate really needs to be eaten by itself because everything complements each other. You get savory, spicy, sour and even a little sweet throughout the meal. + There are also the usual Thali sides like dal, sumbar, yogurt, dessert and another sour/soupy dish. Rice sits right in the middle and you basically mix and match your way through the entire plate. + I also really like the papadum. It's that thin crispy Indian cracker that gives you a nice crunchy break between all the curries and softer foods. ~ PRO TIP: The only thing to consider is whether you prefer a Thali or an Indian buffet. At a buffet, you can essentially get many of these same types of dishes and eat as much as you want. With a Thali, you're getting smaller portions of everything. Personally, I like the variety and having everything served together, especially when the combo is only around $18. Service/Ambiance (4.5 stars) + We came during lunch and there was only one other customer while we were there, so service was good and the food came out rather quickly. + The restaurant has some really nice paintings along the walls. Some of the scenery almost looked Mediterranean to me, although I'm assuming they're depicting places somewhere in India. Either way, they add some character to the restaurant. + It's a comfortable, casual place to sit down and enjoy a Thali without much fuss. GET THE COMBO! You get fish, lamb, chicken, rice, dal, sides, dessert and all the little extras that make eating Thali fun. Between the two of us, if one person doesn't like something, the other person probably will. In my case, that strategy resulted in double lamb, so I definitely wasn't complaining. Wifey gives Vande Bharat 4.5 stars and I'm right there with her. For the price, variety and flavors, this is easily one of our favorite Thali meals we've had. Yelp got this recommendation right!

They catered our wedding of 260 guests, and Tarun and his team completely blew everyone away. We had a VERY hard-to-please crowd, including a lot of guests coming from India who work in hospitality and restaurants themselves, and people could not stop talking about the food. I searched high and low for a Bay Area Indian wedding caterer and honestly found a lot of the options disappointing. Amber was completely different. The food was incredibly flavorful, beautifully cooked, and actually presented well too, which can be hard to pull off at this scale. They are also a full service caterer, which makes managing the event much easier. We used Amber for all of our wedding events, and Tarun made sure every menu felt different and interesting rather than just repeating the standard butter chicken-type dishes. We had paneer tacos, Indo-Chinese served in Chinese takeout boxes, which was SUCH a cute touch, pani puri shooters that made them super easy to eat, and an incredible rasmalai tres leches for dessert, among many other items. The value is also amazing. For some of our pre-wedding events, we did their roughly $40/person package with four items plus dessert. I was worried it might not be enough food, but it was more than plentiful. Tarun himself is an absolute gem. He is kind, accommodating, creative, and goes above and beyond to make the event feel special. You can tell he genuinely cares. We did not want a standard buffet as we wanted the event to feel more elevated, and he did a great job of accomodating our request for family style, as well as serving apps + mains at two different venues in the South Bay ~20-30 min from each other. Our guests are still talking about the food. Amber India truly helped make our wedding weekend, and I would recommend them without hesitation. Easily one of the best decisions we made.

The meat was melt-in-your-mouth tender, swimming in a rich, slow-cooked gravy that balanced heat with a gentle hint of clove and cardamom. Absolutely outstanding. Service & Pace There's a sign at the entrance: "This is not fast food. Great taste takes time." Believe it. Dishes are cooked to order, so expect a leisurely wait. The staff checks in just enough to keep you updated, and once the platters hit the table you'll agree the patience tax is totally justified. Pro Tips 1. Go with friends--the mandi platter is made for sharing. 2. Weekends mean live music; arrive a bit early if you want prime floor-seat real estate. 3. Plan for 20-30 minutes from order to first bite; use the time to soak in the music and décor. Bottom Line Indian Canteen's mix of Bollywood flair, floor seating, and from-scratch cooking turns dinner into an experience. If you're craving authentic mandi and a mutton curry , mark this spot on your Milpitas food map--and don't forget to bring your patience and your camera.

This place was a major letdown. I came in with high expectations after seeing a few Instagram…read morereels--especially excited to try the Mandi--but left thoroughly disappointed. We ordered crispy corn, baby corn pepper fry, chicken 65, malai kofta, dum ka murg, naans, and mutton Mandi. Every single dish was extremely oily--borderline inedible. The food didn't taste fresh, and both, the veg and non-veg curries tasted exactly the same. Overall, nothing stood out--in fact, everything felt overly greasy and underwhelming. Definitely not worth the hype. Disappointing!

This place is for eating there only. They have benches. Sunny and Love both were awesome. I ordered Chole Kulcha, Chili Chicken, Tandoori Chicken, Chap, Roomali Roti; Chole Kulcha- I don't have to eat Chole with it. Kulcha itself was very good, crispy and filled with masala. 5 star Chili Chicken- Quality of chicken matters the most. It was very good. 5 star Tandoori Chicken- Quality was great. Juicy, need to eat there only. 5 Star Chap- Need to eat right away. Don't let it wait otherwise it will loose its texture and taste. Taste when it is hot, good mixture of spices and chutneys with it. Onion enhances the flavor of it. 5 Star Roomali Roti- probably the best Roomali roti. Does not matter where they make it. They put butter on it. It does not get chewy or gets dry. 5 Star Sunny and Love they work hard to make it happen. Kudos to them. Noticed, while I was dining, two people came in and expected them to deliver right away and they left. Guys, give them a break, Truck opens at 4:00pm they have to set up the Tandoor it takes time atleast 45 min. To warm up. You can't expect to serve tandoori items right away.
