If I could give a review lower than one star, I would. Calef Auto is a complete rip off. Bought a truck from them less than a year ago. Within the first two days of buying the truck, it was having major issues starting up - shuddering, turning off and on, etc. Still under my one week warranty, I called Calef, only to be told rather rudely that it was my problem not theirs and that there was nothing they could or would do for me. I just took it in to get it inspected and was told there are gaping holes in the frame, among a host of other problems that render the truck completely useless. Less than a year after purchase. Obviously I should have had it checked out by an independent mechanic - my mistake which I will never repeat. But does anyone know that in New Hampshire they are not legally obligated to disclose information about the vehicles? These guys sold me a f*cking lemon and knew it and took my money and told me to f*ck off. This place deserves to be shut down. DO NOT BUY. read more

I will not do business with this dealership! BUYERS BEWARE! I put a deposit on a car at this place, and made an appointment to have it checked out by my mechanic. An hour before it was supposed to be sent up there, they decided that they would not send it to the garage, as they would just "tear it apart" over there, and it would be a waste of their time. When I asked if I could take it to a different mechanic, they REFUSED, and told me that if their 30-day warrantee and an inspection sticker wasn't good enough, then they would not sell it to me. So, take away point: THEY WOULD NOT ALLOW ME TO HAVE A MECHANIC LOOK AT THE CAR BEFORE I BOUGHT IT! If there is a bigger red-flag about a car or dealership, I can't think of one. At first it was that particular garage, but when I asked about going to another, the salesman said they were not going to let it go anywhere at all. And, nothing I said to the salesman could convince them otherwise, to the point where he told me "Look, I don't want to keep going around in circles and get aggravated with you - it isn't going to happen." Seeing other reviews here saying "Have your mechanic check out any car you want to buy here" or that they are a "rip-off", only makes it more clear to me that this is not a dealership to do business with. Poor business ethics. Purchased truck and two weeks later check engine light comes on and catalytic converter is bad. Mechanic showed us piece removed and clearly it was rusted and about to snap. Owner didn't contact us as requested, salesman was basically like not my problem but here's the owners card. Lot of good that does when he doesn't respond. It's shameful to sell a truck to a family that needs repairs after two weeks of having it, we barely drove it! Bought a car over a year ago from these guys and it's been GREAT for us. They repaired all of the "issues" I had with the SUV before we bought it (which included a new Transaxle and Battery). Now that I'm looking to add another, used, car to the driveway, I'm going to be hitting them up. Reality is, if you're looking to buy a used car, at least have an idea of what you're looking at. They're not brand-new cars, they're USED. Dealers will have no idea how a car was treated in the past. Do your research, google reviews on whatever car you're going to look at, and you'll know what to look for in regards to wear and tear. read more

I test drive a ford ranger with a friend to make sure it wasn't a pile of crap. Turns out it was. They had time to do a full detail on the truck including vacuum, wash, wax, and tire shine, but didn't have the time to repair any of the problems the vehicle had. It was only after taking the truck for a test ride and aLmost rolling it over I discovered both front sway bar end links were snapped off, the front differential was soaking wet, and there was a large rust hole in the bed. Upon returning to the dealership the salesman got very defensive as soon as I called him out on his b.s. Do yourself a favor and stay far away. read more

These guys are awful. Drove up 3.5 hrs from MA to complete purchase of a truck, which we were told was in great condition and running great, as well. True, the truck looked to be well maintained. However, it was idling roughly. It wasn't until the 'check engine' light came on that the sales guy paid attention to it. Before the light came on the guy said it seemed 'fine' to him. Anyway, they changed out the spark plugs and it seemed to run better. This entire process took 4 hours and they weren't very apologetic at all. I am assuming this had something to do with the owner being 'unreachable', which I find hard to believe. Why would you have a business open if the person running it can't make a decision? It was all a game to keep us from getting the 'administration fee' refunded to us since the administration process was awful. In the end we did get a tank of gas...wow, thanks for that! Considering it was basically on empty when we took it for a test drive. One week later and the air conditioning isn't working....I wonder how they're going to help fix this problem? Especially considering they told us they had just filled the AC....hmmmm? I'll update... read more

I bought a Subaru Outback from them nearly two years ago and was concerned about the well-known Subaru head gasket issue for that make-model-year range car as the car had about 80k miles and they had no repair history for it (how professional, that should have been my first clue). I wanted them to lower the price but instead, they insisted to add an aftermarket warranty from C.A.R.S Protection Plus at no cost. Head gasket was supposedly covered as well as a good amount of parts and issues. Well, what was supposed to happen happened, head gasket started leaking so I took the car to Somersworth Subaru dealership and they refused to deal with C.A.R.S. They clearly stated they were crooks and an absolute pain to deal with, so they couldn't be bothered. It took us a few weeks to find the one and only mechanic that was willing to deal with C.A.R.S and long story short, they gave him a hard time for more than a week and to this day they are still not willing to pay for the repair. I contacted C.A.R.S and they are a complete scam, they want the mechanic to completely dismantle the engine at my own cost so he can take pictures even though it is a known Subaru issue and the mechanic already sent them picture proofs of the external leak without the need to dismantle the engine entirely. The car also has a rack and pinion problem and C.A.R.S are refusing to pay for it even though it is covered under the plan. I have now made a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau. The mechanic lost so much time and was so insulted by C.A.R.S representatives he called Calef to tell them they were selling a scam. I contacted Calef via email and their Facebook page and asked for a phone call to discuss this, leaving all my details. It has now been a month, I am still waiting for Calef to call me, which clearly shows they cannot be bothered. They knowingly sell cars in a poor state, sell a complete scam of a bumper-to-bumper warranty, have no customer service and no guts to call you when you notify them with a problem. We currently need to buy another car and we will definitely go to a competitor! I'm starting to think they are as crooked as the aftermarket warranty they sell! read more

Bought a truck from the somersworth dealership always had problems. I bought 2005 for 10,000 and 31 days after I had a head gasket blow. New manager Jay Avery is a wicked a hole. The first thing I see is him taking a personal phone call for 10 minutes and his store smells like cigarettes. Terrible place to do business I garuntee you will have problems with any vehicle purchased here never buy a vehicle here! read more

Unlike the others that have reviewed here, I've never experienced a car purchase so easy. As a matter of fact, reading these I'm not sure we even went to the same place. I've had a lot of car purchase transactions over the years, none have been anything like this one - EXTREMELY POSITIVE. Our son's girlfriend purchased a Subaru Forrester from them a few months back, had the same experience we did. Very few people take the time to post a positive review, the few negatives I see here aren't really that specific. I'll be specific. Stopped by the Somersworth location because my 16 year old truck had reached the end. Met Tony, what a fantastic person to work with. Listened to us, showed us several options, never tried to up-sell us to something I didn't want. Actually discouraged me from up-selling myself into something that would have gotten worse mileage than I wanted (but it sure was pretty...). I initially was drawn into a Jeep Grand Cherokee, unfortunately it sold earlier that day. I looked at another, newer, more expensive Jeep. Tony quickly pointed out that it was a 5.7l (yeh, Hemi baby...) and if better gas mileage was one of my goals, this wasn't gonna work. Right, he passed over $3k more in price because it wasn't going to be the right vehicle, even though in the thrill of the hunt, I thought I'd make an exception just because I liked the way it looked, lol. We looked over several on the lot that were nice, but not exactly what I had in mind. I was pretty stuck on a Jeep due to happy experiences with them in the past, he offered to check the other lot inventory to see if there was something I might be interested when the better half saw the Dodge we ended up with. Both Tony and I noted the Nitro is based on the Jeep Liberty, an excellent little "ute" and one I'm very familiar with and like. Tossed a plate on it, handed the keys over, and let us go for a ride... unchaperoned so we could really get a good feel for it and be comfortable. After a test drive, I commented that it wasn't running quite right. I had already diagnosed this on the test drive, I do all my own work and know my away around a car pretty good. Tony jumped right on it, had it pulled into the shop and fixed while we were still talking to him about numbers (bad coil, very common on Mopar 3.7 & 4.7l motors since they don't have traditional cap, rotor, plug wires but are coil-on-plug ignition). They also replaced the O2 sensor that wasn't even tossing a code, and it had a new sticker on it by time of delivery. Speaking about talking about numbers, the final price was VERY reasonable, less than sticker, and reached in seconds without the typical "let me talk to my manager" or the usual back and forth crap you deal with. Didn't try to up-sell an extended warranty to cover the difference between sticker and the price HE offered. Yes, he offered the price that was below marked price, which happened to be exactly where we were comfortable. He also let our 3 year old grandson name one of his fish :). Never felt rushed. Never felt pressure. Never felt anything but that he really cared about us in the sale. Went above and beyond to not only help find the best financing deal but to turn around delivery in less than a day because I was on a very tight travel schedule, I won't get into the specifics of the additional steps he took to make sure I had something safe to drive before I had to leave the area, but be assured he took care of me above and beyond what anyone could reasonable expect. The level of service we got as strangers is better than you would expect if you were a family friend at any place else. Drove off in a Dodge Nitro that is everything I was looking for, drives perfect, looks great, and not once during the sale did I feel anything other than 100% comfortable. People talk about painless experiences, I've had harder shopping trips to Walmart. If you are in the market for a GOOD used car, you'd be foolish not to go to Calef's in Somersworth and ask for Tony. Tell them you saw this review from Scott on Yelp. Used car salesmen have a bad rap, Tony is doing his damnest to prove that isn't all of them. We will be back. We will tell friends and family to stop there first before even thinking about going someplace else. read more

Purchased a $6K vehicle from them, cash. Check engine light came on before getting home (oxygen sensor), called them, they had me bring the car back, 4 hours later the car is all set. Was told they put miracle in a can in the gas tank. I've been in the business 30+ years knowing all along this wouldn't work. After 3 hours of debate in the show room (heated I might add), I was told to essentially go screw (for the lack of a better term). They have you sign a check engine light waver prior to getting the keys etc. It was obvious they cleared the check engine light prior to putting it on the lot instead of fixing the problem (a $100 investment). I realized then I was going not going to get anywhere with them & left never to return. As of today's post the check engine light came back on & remains on. Bottom line, they sold me a $6K car with a real taillight warranty, I didn't even get home from your dealership, SHAME !!! On YOU !!! Buyers, do your homework on these guys, there's a lot of bad things going on out there about them, I wish I had done so. I will never purchase another car for them nor recommend them & will continue to speak negatively about the way they do business. Word of mouth is very powerful. read more

About a month and a half ago I purchased a red 2003 dodge ram 1500, I have really poor credit and the owner made it seem like he had to jump through hoops to get me financed and said he personally went to 3 banks... He lied they use 1 finance company that from what I have researched will finance anyone. He also told me I bought a great truck, he lied about that as well. 2 days after I bought it the check engine light came on and the engine was knocking. There was no oil in the engine. I added 3.5 quarts of oil to it, he made it seem like his mechanics went through it thoroughly, they did not. All he did was leave it running and let it sit. That made 2 times I left that dealership with my gas light on and barely made it to a gas station. The day I picked it up was the first time... Also the passenger door window controls did not work on all 3 passenger doors, the oh crap handle on the passenger side rips down with even the slightest pull, the radio stopped working a week after I bought it, now aster a month and a half of owning this lemon I was driving it to work and the check engine light (which has been on since the day after they inspected it) started flashing and the engine started knocking and shuttering and wouldn't go above 35 or 40 and most likely has a blown motor. And yes it has oil in it. Also driver side rear shock is snapped and dangling. And also has a major coolant leak... This truck is a complete lemon and I honestly think they knew it when they sold it to me... I called them today and left them a message explaining the situation and asking, actually begging for help from them not by them fixing a blown motor but by putting me in a new truck and they never even had the coutesy to at least return my phone call. Now I have to pay 350$ a month on a truck that even if it doesn't have a blown motor is gonna cost me a fortune to fix and if the motor is blown a truck I can't drive. I can't get to work without a vehicle and I can't support my family if I can't get to work and I'm not trying to get pitty by saying this but my youngest daughter who is 1 has down syndrome and a heart defect so i have a lot in bills to pay. I can't let it get repossesed either... They could have at least called me back. They really had me fooled in to thinking they respected me and that they cared about the cars they sell. read more
