They weren't up front about the cost and the lady on the phone said it would be $80 to come out but didn't give a cost to fix it. When the service man arrived he said the price is clear in the books. They spent almost 2 hours trying to defrost the pipe. Not only was the problem not resolved, but I was still charged nearly $1,000 for the privilege of getting absolutely nothing get fixed. There was no meaningful diagnosis, no lasting solution, and no sense of urgency or accountability. For that price point, I expected expertise, efficiency, and results -- not a temporary attempt followed by a hefty invoice. Informed that I needed a new thermocouple. Admittedly, they installed a new thermocouple last year. The technician said they can go bad quickly when you get "bad gas". 370 days had passed (one winter of use). They informed that: Warranty expired 90 days after install, "VIP" status ended day they installed the thermocouple last year!!????? They offered to install new thermocouple for $300 or for no charge if I renewed VIP membership and paid service call fee= $279. read more

Calfo installed a gas furnace for me through the weatherization program. At first the air wouldn't work, the ducts were completely blown apart, I called them back, they came out 4 days later and taped it all together. My stove and hot water heater were not working properly so I called another company out to check it. There were gas leaks. The leaks were small, but I prefer no gas leaks. There had been 2 inspectors in prior and there were no leaks prior to the furnace installation. The lines were old though. They said all the line needed fixed (this is true) but needed to submit a estimate to make sure they would get paid to fix it. So I sat and waited 2 weeks with a few gas leaks until they came back. Ultimately I have a 100% efficient furnace and all new gas pipes that are working properly. I got this through action housing, so even though I had to make a dozen calls i consider myself pretty lucky. Even though I complained and they had to come out 4 times for what was a 1 trip job, everyone was courteous and respectful. Both myself and my property were treated with respect. Calfo This company came out and intentionally sabotaged my AC unit from further work or further repair. Ryan S was the tech that came out. He installed $700 worth of parts and tried to get me to pay over $800 in parts plus the visit and those parts didn't fix the unit, which I didn't agree to paying for those parts when the unit wasn't fixed. He told me the compressor was bad and I needed to replace the whole unit, plus the furnace. He tried to sell me a new AC and furnaces and quoted me at over 13k. When I refused to pay that much because I didn't feel it was right to pay for parts that didn't fix the unit, he went and uninstalled those parts. I should have watched him, because not only did he take his parts back, but he also stole my disconnect, my relay, and my capacitor. He also cut the wires. He intentionally sabotaged my AC unit because I wasn't willing to pay an overpriced fee for a new unit and furnaces when the furnaces wasn't bad and I wasn't willing to pay for the parts when the unit wasn't fixed. I called management and informed them what happened so they can be aware - that the tech not only tried to overcharge me, coerce me into buying a whole new HVAC system that isn't necessary, and that when I didn't agree, he intentionally sabotaged my unit from further work or repair. Management did not care, stated he would never do anything like that. And they weren't willing to help in any way. I had another company come out to reassess and he informed me he couldn't even perform a diagnosis because everything was gone. In 40 years he never seen anything like it. If only I could give a zero... What began as a simple furnace maintenance check on a fully functioning unit turned into this: 1) Tech stated the pressure switch was bad and that would cost $500 to fix. I authorized repair as I initially trusted them and was worried about having heat. 2) Tech then informed me that he made a mistake and this didn't need replaced so that would be free (obviously) 3) Tech then claimed that it was the induce draft motor and this would run ~$1200-$2K. Since my furnace is older, I asked questions about cost of replacement vs repair. Tech stumbled around answers, wouldn't give me one. Didn't really seem to know much or just didn't want to answer me. Stated he would call with quote. Also turned off the gas "for my safety" and disabled furnace. 4) Today I was quoted $20K for the "low end" Called other folks for quotes. A very kind man who owns his own business arrived and this is what I learned: 1) pressure switches rarely go bad and can be easily checked. If this part was bad, it costs $32 and is a simple two wire install. $500 quote was a complete rip off 2) The furnace turned on and functioned easily. The induce draft motor is wearing but not broken. Also informed that the cost of repairing this would be a few hundred, not $2K (scam attempt #2) 3) There was no reason to turn off my gas. 4) Entire inside of the furnace was examined. Minimal rust, no cracks. 5) A full replacement would be less than half of the outrageous quote from Calfo but not warranted since my furnace is working. Grateful that there are still good humans. I had them out to repair my furnace, which they said I needed a new heat exchanger and it was not worth repairing, I also added an air conditioner and a hot water heater for a total of $16,500. On doing some searching, the items were overpriced and my daughter found another company that came, got my furnace running and found that the heat exchanger was under warranty. I immediately contacted Calfo to cancel my order within two hours. I did sign a form on a cell phone with my finger that said supposedly had the restocking fee quoted but was too small for me to see. I gave Calfo $8000 and they want to keep $5200 as a restocking fee. Also the invoice was vague and did not mention specific products, only listed generic. The new repairman said the water heater at $2400 was twice the average price. Dishonest business practices...beware. read more

I had water leak following shower from light in basement ceiling. Called in Calfo and they said it was corroded copper pipes quoted 2000 to remove ceiling and ductwork replace pipes. They cut 6 x 12 hole and replaced copper pipes. Next morning after shower water pouring out ceiling. Called Calfo and they sent plumber 3 times who did not do work to find leak said I had to hire separate company to remove wall or ceiling to find leak. Had ceiling and walls cut into found leak and plumber said 3740 to repair. Every visit and during multiple phone calls asked to speak to supervisor or owner about the work they didn't do-remove ceiling and ductwork that could have shown correct issue in drain pipe and that the cost of labor which I already paid should be discounted. Had another plumber come in for quote-2100 for repair 1600 less than Calfo who didn't do the work quoted or fix the leak to begin with. I have had no supervisor or owner return my calls. Do not use this company. I filed BBB complaint and you should see what other customers are also saying about inflated prices. read more

As of 6/5/25, I s/w Beth in their front office to find out that their Service Manager Teri Ritz had put a notice on my file to stop doing business with me. Taking into account I had a VIP membership with them purchased April 2024 that was supposed to last 3 years offering check ups on AC and furnace each year. I asked to have my VIP membership prorated for a refund or another resolution and Beth told me she would speak with Mr. Calfo (owner) and get back to me. Not surprisingly, that call never came. After research, I have found this is a common practice of the business to inflate the cost of a part and waive it to make it seem like their VIP membership will be a good value. They invoiced a hot surface ignitor for my furnace at $375.13. Further research shows this part to have a value of around $35. This part took 10 mins to install and resolve. No written notice was ever sent to me stating that my VIP membership was being cancelled. This cancelation of my VIP membership occurred because I had the audacity to ask for a refund of a service call performed by another furnace company after Calfo's technician in Nov 2024 tried to scam me into replacing my furnace. I had a warranty claim on the Carrier furnace of the heat exchanger which Calfo refused to handle because they don't affiliate themselves with any furnace manufacturer. A Carrier service tech could not find fault with my heat exchanger to perform the replacement for a warranty claim. I then had to pay a trip charge for his time. I went back to Calfo to get this money back and Teri Ritz refused. I then escalated my request & asked for proof w/ their invoice that showed the heat exchanger was bad. On 12/21/22 Needed a furnace repair and had a concerning experience. Tech quote a temporary repair for $1561.19 but wouldn't last more than a couple of weeks so I should just get a new furnace. The air exchange was under a 25 yr warranty and honored despite me not being the original purchaser. I contacted Calfo. I decided to file this complaint because my elderly, handycapped mother was charged $1,850 for a water heater plus the install. I didn't know she was charged the $1,850 until the installation was completed. My brother, my sister and I, all purchased water heaters, and they were installed in the last year or so. We all paid under just under a thousand dollars, including installation. All three of the water heaters are from three different reputable businesses. I spoke with my friend, who owns a plumbing company, and he told me my mother was scammed and she was charged entirely too much a water heater. So, four different businesses are charging just under a thousand dollars. Calfo charged my mother eighteen hundred dollars. January 15,2022 Calfo Home Services came out to install an AO Smith water heater in my mother's home. My mother's aid had covid, and she was unable to be there, so I was there for the installation. My mother has an aid because she is blind and hard of hearing. I watched as the water heater and flue pipe were uninstalled and taken out of the home. The first new water heater was too big for the opening, so I was told a new one was ordered, and it would be dropped off shortly. The two plumbers went out and sat in one of their work trucks, waiting for the replacement water heater. While I was watching tv , I heard the furnace kick on, and I remembered seeing the flue y-pipe being carried out of the home by one of the plumbers thirty to forty minutes earlier. I walked into the furnace room, and there wasn't a flue pipe connected to the furnace. I was able to see heat waves or heat haze coming from the top furnace. Fumes from the furnace were venting into the structure. I quickly walked outside and told the plumbers they forgot to turn off the furnace, and fumes were venting into the home. One minute later, one of the plumbers walked into my mothers' home and turned the furnace off. After switching it off, he walked back outside and got back in the work truck. If I wasn't there, my mother would have probably died in her home. One hour later, the second water heater arrived, and the two men brought it in and installed it. After the installation, the men left. I cleaned and mopped the dining room , furnace room floors, and placed the furniture back in its original location. On January 16 , 2022, my mother woke in the middle of the night because she was cold. My mother walked down the steps, and she turned the thermostat up, and the furnace didn't kick on. Several minutes later, she turned the thermostat up again, and the furnace didn't kick on. My mother called my sister and she told her the furnace wasn't working. My sister and her husband came over and checked on my mother. My sister told me she walked in the house, and the metal dining room chairs were cold to the touch. My sister called Peoples Gas, and they sent out a service worker. The service worker came in and checked the furnace. The service worker told my sister and brother in-law that the flue pipe was not secured and the furnace. Because the flue wasn't secured, the fumes were leaking into the furnace room, and the furnace shut off and would not restart. The gas company service employee screwed in one screw on the water heater side of the flue pipe. He told my sister and my brother-in-law the connection was temporary, and my mother would have to get the plumbing company to come back out and screw in the remaining screws. On Saturday, January 22, I stopped at my mother home, and I checked the flue pipe, and I took photos and videos. I noticed the flue pipe was starting to separate on the furnace side of the pipe. I went to the Home Depot, and I purchased screws and foil tape. I already had my drill with me because I knew I would be making the repair. The screws didn't cut through the metal, so I wrapped the two seams with the foil tape. January 23, 2022, I went to Lowes in the Waterfront, and I purchased self-drilling screws and a magnetic driver bit. I drilled the screws into the flue pipe and went home an hour later. I have receipts for all the purchases. March 5, 2022, my mother still hasn't received a receipt or survey. Why? She was promised both. Calls to Calfo January 15, 2022, I called Calfo to file a complaint about my mother being charged $1,800 for a water heater. I didn't receive a response, so I called a minute later, and I left a message requesting a call back. January 18,2022, I called Calfo, and I left a message with a call taker or dispatcher. I left a message, and I asked to speak with a supervisor, and the call taker said both managers were busy. I didn't receive a call back until January 22. January 22,2022, I received a call from a supervisor at Calfo. I had an 18-minute conversation with the supervisor. I told her about the flue pipe and expressed to her that I was extremely upset about the unvented carbon monoxide fumes flowing into my mother's home. Turns out, the technician that replaced the piping didn't tighten it nearly enough. It was so loose, in fact, that the gas company technician was able to unscrew it with his bare hands, where normally you'd need a pipe wrench to do so. I was horrified. After knew everything was fixed by the gas company technician, we called CALFO and explained what had happened. The manager apologized and told us that he'd send us a gift card. We figured that this was going to be towards our next job, like he was trying to keep us as customers, since we've spent over $7,000 with this company in the past. Well, we received said gift card this morning and it was a $25 gift card to Outback Steakhouse! So, basically, the manager over at CALFO Home Services is telling me that the lives of myself, my husband, my two year old and my 7 month old are worth a $25 meal. It's infuriating and disgusting business practice. They're trying to sweep it under the rug. At this point, we don't even want money. We want it to be made public and the people of Pittsburgh should know that this is how this company handles mistakes that they made for people who have spent thousands of dollars with their company. received a call from them offering a home boiler check up for $39.99. accepted the offer. tech shows up does his job, then at the end of the examination he shows me everything is OK -- except : boiler pukes hot water and steam from the pressure relief valve he plays with the feed pressure valve. (he opened the bypass - did not realize what he was doing at the time) boiler pukes again as pressure exceeds 30lbs. Tech: you need a new pressure feed valve and pressure relief valve if you subscribe to our service agreement - $2050. If you do not subscribe - $2450 sent him on his way. did some investigating as to how these valve operate, and how much they cost (relief valve around $60, feed pressure valve around $150). Discovered that what he did was BYPASS the pressure feed valve to open the boiler to full city street pressure (75 - 125 lbs), and did this while the boiler was hot!!! go back to boiler, turn on water, set pressure feed valve to operate correctly, turn on heat. Pressure never exceeds 20lbs. i.e NO PROBLEM TLDR; he attempted to scam me into paying over $2000 for work that was not necessary, and risked cracking the boiler's water boiling container by feeding cold water into the hot tank!! I unfortunately had an emergency plumbing situation this week (gas leak). I was quite impressed at first with response time, especially since it was almost Christmas. Obviously, with a gas leak, you have a very limited time to get it fixed. Being extra busy with work around the holidays, I didn't have time to get estimates. I was completely shocked by the price, but never having this issue before I figured I should go with what they told me. They did the job so far correctly (the techs did a good job and were polite). I since have had two other plumbers tell me that it should have been half the price after telling the details of the issue. I tried to reach the owner to discuss this and get more of a breakdown in costs 3 times. With no return phone call. The first he wasn't there,then he was in a meeting and now they don't pick up when I call. He has my money, and there is nothing I can do about it, but please do not make the same mistake I did and use this company. read more

I called CALFO one day after I smelled a burning/metallic smell coming from some of my furnace vents. The temperature was going to be in the 20s for the next few days, so I needed to get whatever was wrong fixed ASAP. They were able to come out the next day (a few hours later than I was anticipating) and check out the furnace. It turned out that the blower motor had died, and they quoted me about $900 to replace it. That seemed high to me, but I needed a fix and it seemed a bit too much of a pain to do it myself, so I just sucked it up and paid it. The tech was nice, the blower motor was replaced in maybe an hour or so, and my furnace was back in action. However, I soon realized (as I suspected) that I had been price gouged pretty badly -- after some Google research, I found that a blower motor replacement tends to be around $450 up to maybe $600, so it seems I had been overcharged by quite a bit. Ultimately they did good work, but it's probably worth it to shop around for better prices if you can. read more

Never again. TL;DR; Calfo did an incomplete / incorrect diagnosis, costing me $2400 in repairs that fixed nothing. Wanted another $2000 on top of that to do additional repairs. Owner not empathetic to the position I was in; Wouldn't budge on cost. Weird MVP program you must join to get basic things you'd get included anywhere else. I ended up needing a whole new system and had it done by someone else for less. The Diagnosis and Estimate: I have electric heat at my house with a heat pump. I called Calfo because my heat pump was not warming my house up whatsoever, despite running constantly. The tech (Dylan) who was polite enough, did lots of testing and determined in his view that the root cause was a bad reversing valve. He told me it would be $2400 to fix the reversing valve (which I learned is a 100-200 part). I was stunned, but begrudgingly agreed to the repair as it seemed to be the only known issue and I would avoid needing a new system, which Calfo charges in the range of $10-11k to do. The "Fix": Two techs came to repair the reverse valve. It took them roughly 4 hours. They fired up the heat pump and, after about 20-30 minutes, gave me grim news. The heat pump was still not operating well. They had "now" determined that the TXV expansion valve was also bad and needed replaced. The cost? $2000 extra. I was very upset, both that the issue with the TXV was not spotted in the first diagnostic, and that I was not warned in the first place that there could be potential for further issues. I would have NEVER agreed to a $2400 repair if I was told there was even a slight chance that this would not fix my problem and I'd have to pay another $2000 to again 'maybe' fix things. Conversation with Owner: I figured I'd talk to the owner and get a discount on the second repair, considering they were at least somewhat responsible for this misdiagnosis and failure to provide me the right information to make a decision. It took several days to get a call back, and I got nowhere with him. He would not budge on the $2000 price tag to put in a $100-200 part. He insisted that the "computer" tells him what the job costs and their is no wiggle room. I find it odd that the owner of a business can't cut any margin to help out a customer that has already given them a substantial amount of money. All I wanted was 50% off the new repair and he wouldn't do it. All he would do is give me a small discount on a new install (which they charge around $11,000 for). I asked to send me an estimate for the lowest SEER rated system they install. I never received one. He also insisted that I could use the heat pump, it just wouldn't work as well as it could. This turned out to not be true, as I ran it for hours and hours after the repair and my house would not heat up. In the end: I ultimately decided to eat the $2400 and call someone else. Not only did they confirm the TXV was bad, they also suggested that the reverse valve installed by Calfo was already showing signs of malfunction. They highly insisted on a complete replacement at just $7000 for a 14 SEER system. No gimmicks. No silly MVP program. 10 year warranty. I cannot recommend Calfo. They screwed up and have to know it. Mistakes happen, but as long as you own up to your part in it and rectify the situation, you are okay in my book and I'll write you a great review. After giving them the chance to make things right, they simply wouldn't. The right thing to do would be to give me a full or partial refund since the repair didn't really resolve anything. read more

I had first used their website to schedule an appointment for a furnace tune-up, but when no one had contacted me for several days I ended up calling. I was scheduled for service the next day for between 10 and 12. That morning Dylan called and said he thought he might be closer to 12, but then called back to say he would be here by 10:30. During the tune-up Dylan discovered a faulty part and showed me the old one, a new one and the difference in working between the two. The part was $100 and the tune-up was $80, but for $200 total Dylan performed all the work and signed us up for a spring AC tune-up and another fall furnace tune-up. Overall I was very happy with the service. I only gave them 4 stars because of the website mishap. I would definitely recommend them to others! read more

I am super grateful for the fast services provided by Calfo, especially Christian R. We needed emergency heating services during one of the coldest days and the height of a recent snow burst blanketing the city. But that didn't stop Calfo. They answered my call on the first ring, took down my name, phone number and address. Within minutes, I received a text alert that Christian R. was on his way and estimated an exact 54 minute window! :D I'm so glad I called Calfo, even after attempting a call to a few other heating companies, with one providing an estimated 12 hour window. Christian R. traveled from the South Hills to the East End in treacherous winter conditions, crossing bridges/tunnels to provide excellent service and value. We were back in operation in short order and Christian R. checked off all the boxes before he left. In June of 2020, I wanted to have a new furnace with a humidifier and central air installed. To start my research on HVAC companies, I used google search. Calfo came up number one with 4.8 stars. Now, I wonder how did they achieve 4.8 stars. My experience cannot be the first. I remember going to the website and seeing a deal "Up to $1,500 off a new HVAC system". I clicked the coupon and made the appointment. After the sales guy and met and received quote, i mentioned no discount was appled. He told me that that is only for units $10,000 and up. I was spending around $7,500. The web coupon had no contingency. I forced the issue and comprised with a $300 off. But, really I could not have been the only one to see the coupon, but I did help them realize their website needed fixed!! I went thru with the installation. All the technicians were nice and courteous. I just wonder now how much experience they have with installation and pivoting when unexpected items happen. More training is needed. Next, there were items just not correct. Here are a few that made this a poor installation. * Whistling sound (which means air leakage). They did come out and sealed a leaking area around the humidifier. * The basement was colder than the first floor. I felt around the installation to find all the seams from furnace to ductwork were leaking large amounts of air. This should have been sealed during initial installation. Not only poor installation but made the units efficiency very poor during the 90 degree weather. Dylan did come out to fix the former installers poor installation by adding HVAC tape and sealant caulk. But, even after he so called fixed it, I ended up adding more aluminum foil tape to get ALL the seams. If you did not read any further I wanted you to know the above account. Here are other Items during installation I had to coach the installer on the aesthetic part of the job. Such as: * When asked if they were going to drill the hole from the air conditioner into the basement, the assistant pointed up to the brick part of my house, 8 feet high, instead of drilling down at the foundation where the air conditioner would be sitting. I told them I did not want the pipe going up the outside of my house and to drill 1 foot off the ground. But, if I was not there, they would they have run the pipe 8 feet up the outside of my house and then into the basement. * When drilling the hole on the outside of my house for the exhaust, he made a mess of it, breaking and pushing brick back, then adding a lot of cement to cover the damage of the crack brick underneath. Very sloppy work. I would think that if someone had experience, then the extent of the damage drilling the hole would not have occurred. Furthermore, you could see light from my basement to the outside. Found out that no sealant was used around the exhaust pipes to make sure it was air tight. * When installing the thermostat, Furthermore, the assistant put tools on my credenza. Did not even ask if there was anything to cover it so it would not get scratched. I got up and put a towel underneath the tools. They did not even attempt to clean up the floor of the debris from pulling a new electrical wire. Dealing with the brick on outside of my house, I did talk to Tim Calfo but did not know if i should trust his installer to do masonry work but agreed to give them another chance. The final brickwork is Ok, since Dylan was open to talking it out and taking feedback to the corrective work. I also kept checking in to see the progress. In conclusion, seems they are willing to come back and fix the mistakes but really all this should not have happened. Such a bad experience. I was told by Tim Calfo (owner) that nothing would make me happy. What would make me happen is that the work done correct with only very minor incidence. I'm sure they will ignore this or come back at me for just expecting way to much. Good quality is not too much to ask. Now, in January 2021 only for months of using a condensation pump, it started to sound loud and grinding. I thought that i had to go back to them because of a warranty. Glad to hear I did not have to have them service the issue and that any Heating and Cooling can service the furnace. So, take your chances or go elsewhere. read more

I had exterior line coverage, which contracted Calfo to come out. They relocated and replaced my exrerior water line. Since the city was replacing the main lines in the streets, i had to wait to get the new line tapped in. Calfo left the water line hanging out of the front yard. They never came back or returned numerous messages left. Once the new line was tapped, i had to have another plumber move my water meter or i wouldnt have had water. They were also paid to replant the grass, never did. I was told that I needed all these extra valves on my meter to be up to code and i had to pay $450...but the 2nd plumber said they were already on there. Their employee, Pete, had trouble getting a hold of their tree removal service. After several messages left, i gave him the number of someone i knew. Pete left Calfo....and Tim Calfo refused to pay my tree guy anything after the work had been done. They got paid almost $8,000 for this job and did a fraction of the work. read more

Calfo offered to do a free inspection of my home plumbing. The plumber, Ryan Kyle, was very professional and courteous. They found the wax seal needed replaced in guest bath. Job was done well. However, it cost $336. I was told I would also get a 10% discount. An online search revealed that this should not cost more than $200. I guess this is what I get for "trusting" something free and not getting a second price. Very disappointed! read more
