I've driven past this little spot for years and honestly cannot believe I'm just now stopping in. Cali Boy's Deli is a total hidden gem located right inside a liquor store. It is a classic no-frills setup, and honestly, those are always the best spots. Plus, it has a nice parking lot which is a huge relief compared to other places. The people there are so kind and genuinely enthusiastic. When they heard it was my first time, the guy behind the counter gave me a big smile and told me, "you don't even know what you're about to get into," and he was spot on. I ordered the Italian hot sub and it was delicious. It was super filling and stacked with a ton of meat and toppings, but it actually stayed together. I usually hate it when sandwiches fall apart with every bite, but this one was built perfectly and stayed neat the whole time. The bread was the best part. Even though I called ahead for pickup, it was not soggy at all by the time I got it. It held everything together without being so hard that it tore up the roof of my mouth. It was just perfect. The price point is excellent. Honestly, it is a much better sandwich than a lot of the bougier shops that charge over 20 dollars for half the size and have zero parking. Ok, this place gets busy for lunch everyday! Expect to wait! Didn't know what to expect the first few times I tried to order from here. Geezy! If it's your first time here and you want that sandwich or wrap instantly at lunchtime, not going to happen! Just setting up expectations here. You can easily access their menu online which is great. I think you can also order online too, but I've never done that. I've only called in my orders. The line can also get busy and sometimes you can't get through. Ugh! If you wait after the lunchtime rush, you can still expect about a 20 min wait to get your order. At lunchtime you can expect to wait over an hour! Holy, I can't! Part of a liquor store. Parking is small. Not super staffed so be patient. They're making sandwiches! Not open on Sundays. The first time I tried calling in an order, I can literally hear insanity happening in the background! Amazing sandwich is here the owner Dany is super friendly very clean and has quality ingredients in his sandwiches. He uses boars head meat and cheeses. He's very generous with the portions and everything seems to be fresh and very clean and well prepared. The parking lot has room to get in and out really easy that location it's friendly and they ask that you order. There's something about deli sandwiches inside a Liquor store that makes it so good! In Grantville, we are lucky to have one at the corner of San Diego Mission Road & Rancho Mission Road, which I've tried. This one is another competitor about a mile away right next door to Fish Grub and across the street from Toyota. The deli window is located on the left as you walk in the liquor store. We got the chicken chipotle hot sandwich with grilled chicken, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, chipotle sauce on an onion roll. We got this identical sandwich to compare to the other liquor store. Verdict: My boyfriend loves it better because the chicken was chicken breast vice thin chicken slice. I don't like it because I don't like the chicken breast and it was on a roll. I prefer the sandwich bread. We also got the Aloha San Diego which consist of turkey, pineapple, spinach, tomato, honey mustard, cheese, bacon. Verdict: The pineapple was sliced so thin that I could barely taste it. It was thin as the turkey. There were only two slices of turkey and one strip of bacon. Quite frankly, I forgot bacon was even part of it until I wrote this review because it didn't stand out. Overall, my opinion, I like the other deli better because they don't up charge on all the extra sides and condiments. You literally pick your sandwich for meat of choice and build your own like subway. Here, you pay extra if it's not part of your sandwich. I also don't like rolls. Will have to give this place another try and get the sandwich version not sub. There's an option to build your own. My boyfriend likes it so it's 50/50. We upgraded one of our sandwich for a meal to include salad and soda. You can also pick soap or pasta instead of salad. We got the crab salad and paid extra $0.50 because it was $3.50 a la carte whereas the included ones were $3.00. The crab salad was delicious and fresh.
