This had got to be one of the best Mexican restaurants around! The food was delicious! Even the chips and salsa was good! It's a quaint lil Mexican restaurant with patio seating, very nice. Our server was excellent and asked if we needed anything several times. If you're in the area you have to try this place. SO GOOD!

Enjoyed the quick lunch. Pet friendly patio we brought our dog along for our trip to the beach. We enjoyed the cod fish tacos. The bartender was friendly and made me a couple of vodka drinks I wanted.

I'm back for another great review! I've been a regular here for the last 4 years, and I want to give props to Sara. She's the manager that is often helping out serving. She's amazing. She remembers my order and is always a friendly face to see. The food, always top notch, and serving sizes are nothing to fret from. They are very friendly to dogs and allow them in their patio seating, offering water bowls for our fur babies. Can't forget the $19.99 bottomless mimosas!! Will always be back!

It is interesting that some of the restaurants along the coast, in some of the towns, are not dog friendly, even when you see people with dogs everywhere! Luckily Cali Costa is a dog friendly place with an awesome outdoor patio! All the workers are really friendly and welcoming! Not too busy on a Monday evening which was nice for us. We had just missed happy hour. Ordered a house margarita and a skinny margarita. Both very good! The server in training suggested chips and guac, and why not? Really nice presentation and a really good serving of avocado and spices! I ordered the short rib enchiladas and Daveed had the combo taco and cheese enchilada. The short rib was good, and the sauce had a fair amount of heat. I wasn't too keen on the rice, and the pintos were good. Daveed thought he was getting a hard shell taco, but he said it was good. He would've preferred the pintos instead of the black beans. I would've wanted the black beans instead of the pintos, so maybe offer a choice? The presentations of both were really good. Since we're from San Diego, we do tend to judge Mexican food a little hard. We thought the food was pretty safe, meaning anyone who does not like spicy, or is apprehensive about Mexican food, is safe to eat here. There's something for everyone. Again, the service was friendly and upbeat, and they were attentive without being intrusive which we like. Oh, and Cako liked being there because she only lays down when she does! Cako Approves!

Good Mexican place. Live music often, good place to watch a game. Nice staff. Been here 3 times. If you order right you'll be happy. For two recommend the big Cadillac Margarita, two birria tacos and enchilada sampler and share. You won't be disappointed.

Tried this spot today for the first time and I very was disappointed with the quality of the food. The short rib enchiladas were decent, not good but not bad either. However, the Spanish rice and the refried beans were really disappointing for a Mexican restaurant with these prices. What I was served is something I would expect from a really cheap Mexican restaurant in an area where people aren't familiar with Mexican food. The beans were so watery it was like a soup with a few beans mixed inside and the Spanish rice was completely bland. I had stomach pain after the meal and subsequently had to run to the bathroom. You can definitely find much better Mexican food in the area for the same price that's much better quality as well. Only had one customer in the store at 2pm on a Saturday so that seems indicative of how popular this spot is. If they improved the quality of their food and used better ingredients this would be a much better place. For what you get right now, it is not worth the price you're paying.

This is a good restaurant to watch sports without the typical "sport's bar" atmosphere. It has a wonderful outdoor patio and serves tasty coastal Mexican food! My go to when meeting up with friends.

Amazing restaurant! The vibes are immaculate and the food is exceptional! Would definitely recommend coming in and trying it for yourself. Also a great spot to watch the World Cup with over 20 TVs all around!

My favorite lunch or dinner stop when I'm heading home to San Diego County from Laguna Beach. I really enjoy the California fusion style tacos. This time I ordered 3 - Crispy Taco with Carnitas, Cali Shrimp (soft) Taco, and Maui Chicken (soft) Taco. All three were really tasty and hit the spot. The free chips and salsa (just enough heat) are also always good. A couple of on-tap Pacifico beers to wash everything down, and I was a happy camper!

Cute little Mexican place with nice seafood options. I got the enchiladas Mariscos which has one green enchilada with shrimp that was quite tasty. The other enchilada was chipotle crab. This one was super hot, also appeared to be imitation crab so want to throw that out there. I enjoyed my food though and waiters were very attentive. My mom had the fish tacos and she also enjoyed them. I would recommend it for a nice easy sit down place for someone looking to eat some seafood.

I came in to visit a few friends in town and they took me out to eat at Cali Costa. Although they were closed inside, it looked really nice and full of TVs. I would come here for football every weekend if I lived here. The service was good for what they can do. There is not real service right now cause of COVID but a smile goes a long way, and this place is full of them. I met the owners and they are fantastic! They are really working hard to get threw hard times right now. Now for the food. Well, I wouldn't say it is good. I would say it is great! Fish tacos and huge burritos! Taste and flavor were great! I would make this place home if I lived closer, but will for sure visit with my friends when I'm in town. read more

So I was excited to try this new place out. We use to love going to taco surf when it was there. Went on a Saturday night with my hubby. Ordered a Mule that was on special. First they brought it in a reg glass. Not a copper mug like it should be served. 2nd the taste was blah. We ordered chips and salsa. Chips were good but salsa was watery and not much flavor. Great location, lots of TV's inside for sports fans and this really could be a great place for where it's located. However, the food is not that good and service was very slow. Mexican food is more Americanized version and was lacking flavor, not authentic and tastes very pre-packaged. I ordered Tacos, kids ordered a burrito and husband the enchiladas. Corn tortilla was barely warmed and tasted like it was just pulled out of a bag as it was hard and cracked immediately and barely any fish in the taco, mostly cabbage and tomatoes and the sauce on the Burrito and Enchiladas was a canned sauce and wasn't good. I hope they get a better chef in there or maybe stick to Burgers, Wings and offer Pizza because the Mexican food offered is terrible. Inside the tables and chairs are very old, we sat on a high top table facing the Tv's and the seats were sloping so it felt like you were slipping forward, not very clean either. read more

Ate at this place several weeks ago. Seeing such a high rating makes me wonder about the validity of these comments. I had a chile relleno that was barely cooked. The cheese inside looked and tasted like a cheese stick and was not even melted. The place is dank and seemed sloppy. Won't be eating there again. read more

ORDER THE MAUI TACOS!!!! Best Tacos I have ever had!!!!! First of all let's talk about the service, Lester and Josh were so supportive and knowledgeable about the menu. My husband and I are new to the area and are THRILLED we found this place. Honestly the BEST tacos EVER. The crispy tacos were soooo good. Sat outside on the patio and really enjoyed the atmosphere. After moving from Minnesota in April - Cali Costa quickly became my "go-to" place. The staff is welcoming, polite and fun! Want to watch a game - plenty of TVs to do so. They have a great patio section to for enjoying some drinks on a beautiful day. All this and I haven't even mentioned the food - which is awesome! Try the street tacos on Tuesday - you won't be disappointed. read more

We love this place! The food is excellent! From burgers to fajitas, it's great quality and taste. There's also a lot of different fancy drinks too. The place got a much needed makeover from the Taco Surf days, but also kept the local charm. The owners are the nicest couple too. Come on down and support them! There's also a ton of tvs, definitely a great place to watch a game. We were sad to see Taco Surf go, but happy to see new life and fun environment in the place:) read more

Where to begin....Let's start at the top Josh, the manager or maybe owner, who could tell with this guy's lack of responsibility. He's rude to his staff and customers alike. It would be one thing if the food was outstanding, more like out sourced. it's anything but fresh. He must make his servers push is $13 guacamole because I heard every table around me being pushed into this. I gave it a try, no flavor the worst ever. Putting aside the terrible food I think seeing how this guy Josh interacted with his employees was what did it for me he is rude and disrespectful to them in front of patrons. Not a very good manager or person. There is amazing Mexican food everywhere, no use in wasting your time and money at this dump. read more

Food was good, service wasn't horrible, but we were charged a higher price for every item we ordered, only finding out when the bill came (and we noticed that the charged prices were higher than what was on the menu)--apparently the owner decided to raise prices for Cinco de Mayo without telling customers, and the server completed the transaction before coming back with that explanation. Will not go back. read more

This new place is awesome! The interior and exterior have been carefully cleaned up and it's so lovely. The drinks are so good, and so is the food! This combo with the attentive and kind service really made our evening. The variety on the menu makes for easy-pleasing. The wings....soooo good! Couldn't tell you how their food is, as we never got to order. We sat down outside for lunch and ordered drinks. They came quickly but the server never returned to our table. I forget our servers name but she was really great and accommodating. I have gluten sensitivity and she was happy to make sure and double check that everything I got was gluten free. The chips aren't because their fried in shared oil, but it seemed like most of the tacos can be made GF. I had the grilled fish and the taco surf shrimp tacos. The shrimp tacos were delicious. I'm not a big yelper but I feel Cali Costa deserves 5 stars. I celebrated my 42 birthday at Cali costa with a large group of people and it was perfect. The owners allowed us to use the patio and assigned a server to our group. The food, drinks and service were incredible. I want to say thank you for doing an incredible job and for you Yelp trolls who feel the need to leave negative reviews of a small business who are working hard to keep their business open and profitable, please go back to the basement you crawled out of.... The food isn't my favorite, however our waitress was phenomenal. She was the only waitress working the bar, patio and indoor dinning room. Although she was extremely busy she took time with our table with a smile. She has a fabulous personality, her name is Rylee. We will be back just to have her as our waitress. Talk about a jewel in Dana Point for amazing food, drinks and ambiance! Highly recommend the avocado shrimp rolls to start. I had the surf n turf burrito and the wife had the shrimp enchiladas. Cocktails were very creative and flavourful. The Pineapple Chili and Patron Prickly Pear Margaritas are addictive. Can't wait to come back and bring some friends and family. read more

Went today and if I could do a -0 I would. Dirty stinky the cook dirty apron. One sip of the wine and I passed. Quite obviously I didn't like the wine but I still paid for it and the bartender she looked busy but really was making busy work for herself didn't say a word. Like the old place that it was can't remember the name but never again ever ever ever ever ever. read more

I came here right after taco surf switched businesses I ate food and wasn't impressed but I gave it a second chance and Adam was our server... he was super honest with the whole menu. It was 5 of us eating and we were all impressed with the food. Cali Costa has definitely changed my perspective on the food now. They have stepped up there game in the back kitchen and it was great! Thank you Adam for being the best server! I definitely recommend this place for Mexican food in Dana Point! read more

Cali Costa is in the original Hobby Surf shop in the heart of Dana Point. Taco Surf was here for 20+ years, but COVID hit them hard. Cali Costa started up during the pandemic and had been running strong with family since day one.

I've been coming to The Point for more than 20 years, but I never realized what an amazing place it was to watch sports until the World Cup. The atmosphere is incredible. The sound system is fantastic, every TV is tuned to the same game with the live match audio, and no matter where you sit, you have a great view of multiple screens. It feels like you're inside the stadium, surrounded by fans who share the same passion for the beautiful game. I saw people from different backgrounds coming together, cheering, laughing, and enjoying the matches as one community. That's what sports are all about--unity and friendship. I came here I think pretty soon after they opened. I was pretty impressed with how quickly they got everything adjusted for COVID times. It's a really fun environment with a ton of TVS and my new goto spot for sports in DP. The bartender Niahm was super friendly and greeted us right away and showed us where we were able to sit (indoors wasn't allowed at the time). We got chips and salsa right away (yummy!) and I ordered tacos and my girlfriend got the burger. It was really good! We got flavored margaritas on the rocks too and treated ourselves to some high end tequila. Everything came out quick and the atmosphere was fun. I think the owner actually brought us our food, he was very friendly. First time eating here - taco Tuesday night. Place was crowded and we were excited to try it. Food was ok, not great. We sat down and waited 10 minutes before a server came to our table and gave us menus - 15-20 mins before we got our drink order and food order in. So we'll over 30 mins before food came. People who came in after us got chips and salsa and drinks before us. Hard to get anyone's attention. I was. not impressed, especially for food that was just ok, not great. Only reason for 2 stars and not one, is once we got our waitress she was nice and tired hard, but overworked - not her fault. What a great time at a new spot in Dana Point. After reading the reviews, they are all over the place so thought we would try it out and see for our self. Opinion? GREAT! The staff is super friendly and fun. The place looks great for what little they did to change it, and the food, oh the food! I had your typical taco and enchiladas and it was great. One red and one green enchilada with a ton of flavor. The taco was fantastic. Their beef has a lot of flavor for a taco. We also tried the chicken enchiladas. Another winner. We only had a few drinks while we were there, mostly margaritas. They were good and strong. Cali Costa will for sure make our rotation when eating out for Mexican food.
