Visited Califas on 2 ocassions, most recent 2 weeks ago. The food quality is consistently fresh and delicious. I am a foodie of empanadas and fresh salsa. Califas is the only place in the upstate that gets it right with all their freshly served authentic dishes. In addition to delicious food, Juan, the afternoon server goes above and beyond with customer satisfaction. I moved from Santa Monica in 2020 to Greenville and in the last three years I've missed my favorite LA taco spots from Guisados to Tacos Por Favor. My meal at Califas today was better than any taco experience I've ever had while living in LA. I had the Birria tacos at the taco and tequila festival and was delighted but today was my first time eating at the restaurant and was blown away. The birria crunch wrap was fantastic. Every bite was perfectly balanced. Just like with the San Diego burrito and the loaded fries. Every menu item was intriguing and appealing and had a uniqueness to it that makes me want to go back every day till I try everything. I've never written a review for a restaurant before but I can see Califas succeeding in every city and Greenville is extremely lucky to have such an amazing restaurant. I've eaten tacos all over the country. The meat is tender and flavorful and is even more amplified when paired with their beautifully crafted consommé. I can guarantee these tacos will melt in your mouth. Their guacamole has a sneaky punch of spice, but not overwhelming. The avocados are fresh, smooth, not mushy, but not hard. The queso is ho-hum, but that is not a big deal for me. The owners are from the LA area and am very thankful they brought their culinary expertise to the upstate! My husband and I wanted to try the birria tacos. We like the crunch, the meat, the birria sauce, but we didn't really enjoy the cheddar cheese. The cheese made it very salty and greasy. We ordered to go but the styrofoam container had a hole in it and the grease from the tacos spilled everywhere in the bag. The hole was from placing the container too close to the stove cause it was a burn hole. I mean it was an accident so I can't blame them for that but it was a mess. I didn't know the tacos didn't come with cilantro and onions so I didn't grab any. I was kinda sad about that but we did get some salsa and lime from the cart. The Mexican street corn was drenched in the cream sauce. It was way too much. I was sad the pepper on the top didn't make it into the cup. We would love to go back still and try their other items on the menu. I would give them another try and eat inside. There was just way too many people so we just ordered our food to go. read more

The food had very good flavor and you could tell the cheese was good quality. The consommé was full of flavor and it is from the meat they cook 8-10 hours according to the friendly owner. So yummy! This place is a hidden gem- the Burria tacos are amazing. The crunchy taco shell soaked in the au jus enhances the experience. The meat is amazing and the seasoning is done perfectly.
