First, the reason I chose Auto Salon was based on the upstanding character of the owner, Alex. He contacted my medical office searching for a patient left his wallet with an outdated address on the license and an insurance card that had me listed as the doctor. Going out of his way like that for someone seemed too good to be true in this age of half-hearted service in most places. I was coincidentally looking for someone to wrap my new Tesla at the time and had investigated a couple other locations. After choosing Auto Salon, Alex helped me determine that PPF was going to meet my needs better than vinyl wrap due to the desire for protection and longevity. It was clear he was very interested in the creative process of picking a color and helping me design the car in just the way I wanted. (forgive my quirky taste, Alex should not take the blame) I knew I wanted some variety of purple and I brought him many pics from the net on other cars. Seeing a lambo in purple didnt quite give me confidence that the Tesla would look as great. But he helped me to pick a good shade of PPF based on the pics I had given him. I specifically asked for the pin striping to highlight some of the lines. Admittedly, the Tesla lacks some of the sexy lines that a Ferrari or BMW i8 have, but we found places to put the blue pinstripes that makes me feel like I am jumping light speed to Endor (don't knock Gen X movies!) [[HIGHLIGHT]]Ultimately the PPF could not be stretched to make the pin striping so Alex came to my office in Encinitas to replace it with vinyl striping to make things convenient for me. I was extremely grateful that I didn't have to commute again.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Some heads ups: This is a small business with relatively few staff, so there may be some wait. But they are all dedicated to the project and that felt comforting. The wrapping took a bit longer than estimated and I had to come back within a week to revise some of the blebs that form at the beginning. It's my understanding that this is par for the course, but was a little frustrating. But they were upfront all throughout the process and were always reassuring that they would correct anything that was not perfect. Parking is cramped so you will likely have to park along a red curb within the lot. Don't worry, everyone is doing it. You wont get in trouble. Be cool like us! It is now about 4 months after the wrap and I still love it, the window tinting and the light shading and all. Have fun and be imaginative. Why look like all the rest? read more

Well. Unfortunately my last post from mid July went south after I began my travels after Alex wired my Ford Escape for my new travel-trailer. Long story short, his wiring technique wasn't the best, which then ended up costing me an ADDITIONAL $400 in AZ after I had fuse after fuse blow up during my evening trek! That was very disappointing as well as extremely frustrating! His wiring he did was touching my exhaust causing my system bro constantly short-out :( To further the matter he never offered to refund or correct his failure to deliver! I dutifully took our VW Eurovan to Yelp's top-rated auto tinting shops in San Diego, asking for a quote on doing all the windows and windshield on the van. I also asked for a quote on re-doing my wife's VW Golf. The tint film was bubbling on the Golf. Do it nice or do it twice. All the shops seemed to do good work, but the guys quoting were indifferent; not unprofessional, just acting like employees who get paid for their time, not terribly committed to their craft. I've had the same mechanic for my Mercedes Benz cars for over 25 years. He also sells used Mercedes, so I asked him for a recommendation. That's were I got California Auto Salon (CAS), and I am very glad I asked, because CAS was by far the best price. However, that's not why I chose them. They got the work because Alex, the owner, showed a clear passion for doing good work. He took the time to give me an informed and articulate response to my particular needs. I didn't expect the re-application on the Golf to be so clearly (literally) superior to the original tint. In fact, my wife and I are amazed at how much better the car looks. More importantly, the XPel film Alex uses is much easier to see through, in spite of appearing darker than the previous window tint. The van also came out perfect, way better than expected, and Alex put the interior panels back better than they were before he stated. Both cars came back clean and on time, with Alex easily accessible for the inevitable questions and changes in our schedule. His film is, according to my research, superior to whatever the other shops quoted on. It comes with a VIN-registered warranty for the life of the vehicle, meaning it transfers with ownership. Alex and CAS get my highest recommendation, and I am a very picky customer, especially about my cars and craftsmanship. If you don't want to shop around, don't bother.
